1 Tire Valve problem of the 2011 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/22/2012

Three months ago my first tire pressure sensor broke. I was parked in an indoor parking garage and found my car with a flat driver side front tire. I put on the spare and drove to a tire center where they informed me the tire pressure sensor had broken. I had a rubber valve installed and then later that week brought the car to a dealer and had the tps replaced. Last week I was driving and my tire pressure alarm lit on my dashboard. I pulled into a service station and attempted to put air in the rear passenger side tire. As I started to place the air pump onto the valve he tip of the tps broke off in my hand, causing the entire tire to flatten instantly. Again, I had to put the spare on and drive to a repair shop and have a rubber valve put in. Today (one week later), a third tire pressure sensor failed, this time the drivers side rear tire. I was fortunate to have this one happen in my driveway instead of on the highway. This is extremely dangerous as the tires instantly flatten, and can cause a serious accident if it occurs on the highway.

2 Tire Valve problem of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/16/2011

While putting air in my tires the valve stem snapped off. While looking closer at the tire I noticed that their were cracks in the side walls of both front tires. Cracks that were up to 4 inches long and ran as deep as the re-enforcing layer. The tires are kumho solus size 215/55r17. My car is a Hyundai Sonata, 2009, with 21,995 miles on it. I bought it new. Now the tire dealer can't get kumho to call them back. I take care of my car and tires and this should not be happening at 21 thousand miles.

3 Tire Valve problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

Faulty valve stem on 2002 Hyundai Sonata. The tires were kumho tires. While driving along the expressway, within about a mile of driving the air in the rear driver's side tire depressurized. Since I've seen this before on the other tires, I knew before I got out of the car that it was a cracked valve stem. The tire was no good anymore because the rim came in contact with the tire and had to be replaced. About a month later, the rear passenger tire did the same thing but I was able to get the spare on before complete depressurization. The valve stems were replaced by discount tire. Upon inspection today, the first one may be showing signs of cracking again.

4 Tire Valve problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/02/2008

I have had two valve stems on my 2002 Hyundai Sonata go bad. I purchased new tires at gurnee Hyundai 10/23/07. The first failure was 4 or 5 months ago and the most recent was on 11/2/08. We were traveling in virginia and stopped for lunch when the failure occurred. It could have been serious because it was the right front tire and we were traveling at highway speeds in the mountains.

5 Tire Valve problem of the 2004 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 06/26/2007

Tire valve stem failed on 2004 Hyundai Sonata. There were defective wheel covers. All tires were replaced on this vehicle on 11-10-2006. Mileage wa s37,063. Vehicle was taken to dealer for tire rotation on 6-21-2007. On 6-26-2007 while travelling at 70+ mph on the interstate, I experienced sudden loss of air in the left front tire. Luckily, I was able to control the vehicle to a safe stop. Took the tire to the vendor. Determined that the cause of the failure was a broken valve stem. Vendor stated that they have had problems with the Hyundai wheel covers. Affected tire was unusable due to the time it took to get stopped from 70+mph and was replaced. After that event, I began watching the wheel covers and observed that the wheel covers rotate on the wheel while driving, and bend the valve stem with significant force. I frequently removed and re-installed the wheel covers to relieve the force on the valve stem, only to find out that the problem would re-occur with less than 100 miles of driving. I became concerned and worried to drive my car at interstate speeds due to the possability of a potential crash due to the rapid loss of air should another valve stem break. Consulted the internet (google) and seached for "hyunadi Sonata valve stem problems. " others have experienced the same problem. Also, found this problem being investigated on 2002 - 2003 Hyundai Sonatas. See NHTSA "pe05-059 2002 - 2003 Hyundai Sonata tire valve stem failures 07-Nov-2005 " note: today, I replaced the original Hyundai wheel covers with ftermarket wheel covers purchased from auto zone. These wheel covers have a close apparence to the originals and appear that they cannot bind the valve stems. A $29. 95 fix. My opinion is that the factory Hyundai wheel covers are improperly designed and represent a safety hazard. Had I not been an experienced driver and paying attention to my vehicle, I could have easily wrecked at 70 mph.

6 Tire Valve problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 04/21/2006

Valve stems have been pulled from tire by shifting hub caps. This has happened after tires were recently replaced. Once while the car was stopped and once while backing out of a driveway.

7 Tire Valve problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 11/21/2005

I am experiencing the valve stem/tire issues in my 2003 Hyundai Sonata that are currently being investigated. I have had 2 flat tires since July and both times I was told that it was the valve stem. I was told that this is a Hyundai issue and that when you hit a bump the hubcap spins and eventually "snaps" off the valve stem. I have called 2 different Hyundai dealerships and they both denied that it was a Hyundai issue. They both claimed that I probably have the wrong size tire on the car. I felt like my issue was dismissed both times. The tires on the car are the exact size as referenced in my owners manual. I was told that replacing the tires to a "specific brand" would solve the problem. So yesterday, I bought 2 new tires after I could no longer keep air in the front tires for more than 6 hours. When they removed the hubcaps, they said that the tires deflated on their own, through the valve stems. I came online to research this issue and see if anyone else has had the issue and saw an article about the investigation that has just begun and thought it best to lodge a complaint. I have receipts for all of the repairs and new tires if this is needed.

8 Tire Valve problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

Hubcaps on 2003 Sonata slide around pinching valve stems. This was first noticed when I replaced tires from michelin to bf goodrich . Tires are proper size . This problem of the hubcaps shifting happens daily as I have to remove hubcaps and straighten. Have now removed hubcaps permanently for safety reasons. Have had one blow-out due to stem being twisted. Number of failures below are estimated but the hubcaps until recently were out of position daily. Date of blow-out below is estimated someone around the middle of August.

9 Tire Valve problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 03/28/2005

On 03/26/05, I purchased bf goodrich touring t/a pro series (size p205/65r15) for my 2003 Sonata at sam's club. In a month and a half, I had 4 flat tires and 10 valves replaced because the hub caps spin and slice the valves. I lost 7. 5 hours of work and received a back injury while trying to change one of the tires. I've spoken to Hyundai and bf goodrich - both of which suggested getting the h rated tires instead of the s rated. I did that, but it didn't work. I also paid $75 for a diagnostician to tell me that I had the wrong bead on the tires but whom couldn't suggest a solution. My owner’s manual simply states, “always replace your tires with those of the recommended size lists the tire size specifications as p 205/65r15. There is no recommended replacement brand named and no mention about having the correct size beading. I took my car to another dealer and learned that the bf goodrich tires have a bead protectant which cause the hub caps to rest directly against my tires thus causing them to spin. There should be a gap between the hubcap and tire. I switched to a goodyear tire and have not had problems since. The problem with slicing valve stems only occurs on the 15 inches tires with hubcaps (as opposed to the 16 inches tires on aluminum wheels. ).

10 Tire Valve problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 02/12/2005

I purchased a 2003 Hyundai Sonata in June 2003. At 18,000 I had to replace my front tires due to wear. I had the correct size mounted and it went flat approximately 5-6 times. My dealer kept saying it was the tire dealers fault however, if the correct size tire is used it could not be their fault. Car dealer refused to look at until about the fifth time. I became irate and they took it in. I was told my car will only use the exact same tire that came on it from factory. This is not in any of the car information or owners manual. Any other tire used causes friction on the wheel cover causing it to move and cut the tire valve. I feel this is a huge safety issue. If the tire had gone flat in heavy traffic or at higher speeds it could have caused a fatal accident. Luckily, it kept going flat after it was parked. I just had two more tires put on, the exact same ones that came on the car standard. We'll see what happens.

11 Tire Valve problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

I replaced my tires with the correct type called for my car, 205/65r15 h94 bf goodrich traction t/a and now I keep getting flat tires from the factory installed hud caps shifting on my weehls and pressing on the valve stem. So far the car was not moving when this happened, but I am affraid of what will happen when I am at highway speed and it happenes. The dealer says that it is a problem with the tires, but how so if they are the correct tires for my car. The dealer will jnot do anything about this problem at all!.

12 Tire Valve problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 09/19/2004

Bf goodrich tires (20565h15) on a 2002 Hyundai Sonata. After less than 50 miles front left tire went flag due to a severed valve stem. Stem was severed by hub cap movement. Remounted tire, and tire leaked while driving on highway. Removed all hub caps for now. Hyundai blaming tire manufacturer, but size is recommended size as stated on auto specifications. This is a potentially dangerous situation for anyone who changes tire brands on this model. Tire dealers shoul dbe made aware of this problem before someone is needlessly injured.

13 Tire Valve problem of the 2002 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/05/2004

Goodrich control plus tires caused problems with 2002 Hyundai Sonata. This problem has been present since the first day of ownership. With 25 miles on the tires, a flat tire was present. The tire dealer informed the consumer that the valve stem had been cut and needed to be replaced. Two days later another flat tire was present. The left front tire each time. It was recommended to change from a "t" series rated to tire to an "h" rated tire. Soon after placing the "h" rated tire, and using a shorter valve stem, the hub caps continued to rotate on the rim, caused by the tire flexing against the hub cap.

14 Tire Valve problem of the 2003 Hyundai Sonata

Failure Date: 05/01/2004

When I replaced the tires with the specified size tire after having the car for about 23,000 miles, I had the problem with the hubcaps shifting and shearing off the valve stem. I took the car back to the tire dealership (bf goodrich tires) and they tried to solve the problem. They called the dealership who told them it was the tires, but that was illogical. They wound up putting metal stems on all four tires as it was happening on the front tires but rotation would require metal stems in all tires. This kept the hub caps from shearing the stem, but the caps would slide up over the stems so as to make it impossible for me to check the air in my tires. Finally after about a year and half of headache, I finally bought new wheels for the car. This completely solved the problem. Hyundai would never admit to the problem and tried to tell us that the tires were wrong. Like others have stated, there is nothing in the owners manual that states that one has to buy michelin tires. When I finally bought the new wheels, the tire dealership attempted to mount the new tires on the old rims that came with the car and the tire could not be mounted on the rim and hold air. There very definitely is a problem with those wheels but Hyundai never would admit it and only offered to buy a new set of hub caps which did the exact same thing. I like the wheels I bought but I should not have had to buy them. Hyundai should have replaced the wheels on the car. I experienced five flats on the front end of my car before the metal stems were put in. Very poor design on the wheels.
