general problems of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee - part 1

While driving less than one mile from my residence, my 2014 Jeep Cherokee suddenly displayed a warning related to shifting, followed immediately by a complete loss of engine power. The vehicle shut off without warning while in motion. At the time of the incident, the dashboard displayed the messages: “shift to desired gear” and intermittently “service shifter. ” I was able to safely maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road; however, this incident has now occurred multiple times, consistently in the same general location and under normal driving conditions. The sudden loss of power creates a serious safety hazard, particularly given the lack of warning and potential for this to occur in higher-speed traffic conditions. This issue appears consistent with known problems involving the transmission wiring harness and shifting system in this vehicle model. Immediate investigation and corrective action are warranted to prevent potential accidents or injuries.

I have a 2014 Jeep Cherokee trailhawk. The service 4wheel drive light keeps popping u. A recall needs to be put on this year, make and model. Its a known issue that Jeep has not addressed at all.

The ptu has failed in my vehicle. When I bought the vehicle there was a 4x4 light on the dash but I was told that it needed to be just turned off by a Jeep dealership. But I believe it actually was a symtom of the failing ptu. My vehicle sometimes goes into neutral when I try to pull off from a stop sign and then the vehicle kicks itself back into drive. My coolant and transmission temp rises the more I drive it and transmission seems to shift late or hard and sometimes prematurely sometimes it smells like burning electrical.

November 20 I took my car to seattle Jeep to comply with a NHTSA recall (u90). Few days latter when they finish the repair they created a new problem with the transmission. Now I have a rough or abrupt transmission shifting like being rear ended. The dealer told the manufacturer need to fix it because of some flaws in the software calibration or it’s internal components. Seattle Jeep it won’t take responsibility for.

Less then 120000 miles and rear differential unit had to be replaced, and now roughly 158000 miles and now front differential unit has to be replaced.

Vehicle experienced a sudden no-start condition in July 2025 after being parked for ~2 weeks. Engine cranked briefly, then shut off and displayed a red immobilizer warning. Obd-ii scans showed bcm memory faults (b22a9), immobilizer lockout (p0513), can-c bus communication errors, and repeated low-voltage codes. Dealer replaced pcm (~$1,550) but vehicle still inoperative. Dealer then determined bcm (body control module, part #68141881aj) failed, but part has been discontinued by mopar and is unavailable nationwide. Used bcms are VIN-locked, leaving no authorized repair path. Vehicle is also subject to NHTSA recall 23v338000 (power liftgate module electrical short / parasitic drain). My vehicle showed repeated low-voltage events consistent with this defect, which likely corrupted the bcm and immobilizer system. Dealer confirmed recall parts are still backordered. As a result, a 2014 Jeep Cherokee with only ~32,000 miles has been rendered permanently inoperable due to discontinued safety-critical electronics. The defect creates a substantial safety risk because electrical shorts can occur while parked or driving, and owners are left without remedy.

I believe this is an issue with the parking brake module. The vehicle tries to shutdown or stalls while driving (in my case at 60 mph on highway). It literally loses power and I get the disabled parking brake warning on dashboard. Losing driving power and stalling while moving at that speed has been very dangerous and life threatening. When I start the vehicle it acts as if the parking brake is engaged even though it is not.

Just got gas, stopped at the gym, started Jeep, drove out of parking lot then the Jeep randomly went into neutral and dash said vehicle needed to be put in park to shift gears, I put it in park, then into drive and didn't shift into gear, put it in park, turned off the Jeep, then didn't want to start, after 3rd try it started and shifted into gear. Drove it for about 2 miles, parked at a store, let it set for 20 mins, first try didn't want to start, second try it did. Been driving fine for the past couple days. Having a vehicle randomly shift into neutral while driving is a major safety issue.

My oil filter housing is bad on my Jeep. They were built with plastic which everyone knows doesn't last long and now changed to aluminum because they realized it was a problem for many owners. The issue you spend lots of money until can get to a shop and then a lot more money for repair. Leaking oil and coolant everywhere until you find out the issue plus the risk of fire if overheats extremely. My complaint proves they finally realized that plastic was no good but owner stuck with bill of replacement and shop fees. I have shopped around several part stores for the part and I am shocked at the number of people who have replaced this part. Just wondering why no recall issued especially with them changing the material of the part.

Was at car wash car was in neutral after wash finished car wouldn’t go in drive then service transmission light came on I turned car off and it started back up but running funny and that service transmission light came back on.

This is a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, this model does have a recall for water leaking in through the truck. That causes the electronic parking break module to short out and lock the parking brake in as engaged. My Jeeps VIN however is not a part of the recall for some reason, this part was replaced on 4/16/22. Today 3/9/2023 the parking brake engaged and was locked on when we put the car in park. The spare tire compartment is full of water, everything in the trunk was wet. And the piece from the service advisor that was replace in 2022 has water in it, and it is corroded.

Service shifter message requiring replacement of the bevel. Once repaired for $540 still appearing and needs to be replaced.

When starting again and driving in slidell louisiana only 70458 car is making loud noises from console radio network seems as if it's a tracking device linking into my car causing it to break gas is just draining starting is loud just went to Jeep in nola Jeep xtreme on 29th all was fine seems as if there plugging in broke cars or trucks on my car. When off it makes noises every 20 min it's very odd when driving stalling like not going I'm not sure oil change not due as of yet even with message system on progressive seems as if they have done this also as when I went to hattiesburg Ford where I purchased stopped please call me with answers I do not own any other cars trucks four wheelers or motorcycles. This is very disturbing. I pay notes on this and am being robbed I lost my corolla like this the fcc and faa are having same problem satellite please call me ASAP.

My transmission was replaced in 2019 under recall and replaced with the the same faulty transmission. It has failed again. Why would they not warranty the same faulty transmission when it fails again? you wouldn’t replace a bad kidney with a bad kidney. This makes no sense.

I bought this new and when I had 99k miles, the transmission went out. I received a notice that this transmission had a class action lawsuit against Chrysler. I took it to southpoint Dodge in austin texas. Where I purchased it. They argued with me for weeks but finally agreed to replace the transmission. The new transmission only has 27k miles and is having the same transmission problem again.

When I bought has brake problem have extended warranty and all protections on place bucking after starting at 1 to 5 then when stooping. Lights panel seems not correct not illimious one lighting panels to see going on and off 2 times mileage is broken I recorded mileage to fro. Work only 20 miles incorrect values sense I bought .

I started the vehicle and started to drive. The gear slid to park and stop in the middle of the road. An indicator said to check transmission. After pushing it off the road, the next day is driving again. All the check engine sign went off.

Driving on the highway early morning and I was switching lanes and all the emergency lights on the dashboard came on. There was still power but I could not move forward with using the gas pedal nor use the break to come to a full stop once I was near the emergency lane. I was in the fast lane and had no way to keep using the gas pedal to get out of traffic. The drivers behind me as well as myself were luckily not hit due to know possible way to quickly move out of the way since I had no way of accelerating to move out of traffic, I could only coast in 70 mph freeway. It was towed to a richfield service company and it was determined it was the transmission valve body. There were not other symptoms of the problem prior, no warning lamps, messages, nothings.

Approximately 2'years. Ago I was on my way home from work around 10:30 pm. I was in moderate to heavy traffic and the Jeep threw a code saying service transmission. I wasn't able to accelerate. I had to navigate carefully through traffic with my hazards on to get to a safe place to stop. I was finally able to and turned off my car. I let it sit for a few minutes then I try to restart it again. The check engine light was still on it still said service transmission. I tried to put the vehicle in reverse, and it jumped so hard I thought that I had hit something. I turn it back off again and left it off for approximately 20 minutes. I finally tried to restart it and it started fine put it in reverse and it was able to go in reverse and I was able to limp it home. Thank goodness a traffic wasn't too bad I was able to pull over. I took my car to I trusted mechanic and they look through everything and they could not figure out why it was doing that. Not long after I got a postcard in the mail stating that the tcm need to be replaced. I called the number that was on the card and they stated that that particular part was on back order and they would call me. I gave them my information. They never called me back. I tried to go to work again a few days later and the same exact thing. But this time I have video of it. So I took it to my local suncoast Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram not the place I bought it from but within the same hub. I showed them the video the gentleman there said that he was going to bring it back and the mechanics will work on it. A couple hundred dollars later they stated that they had fixed it and it shouldn't happen again. But it did it happened quite a few times, and it tends to happen when the temperature here in florida is a little bit chilly. They actually put a sticker on the hood that said that they had fixed it but they have not. I tried to call and get refunded for the tcm but they said I was not able to. I still have the same issue.

My 4wd light came on at the end of August 2024. Was told I needed to order a part - rl307402ai pto unit. Was told I cannot drive my car much until I get the part. It is now December 6, 2024 and part is still not in. Was told there is over 3,000 people waiting for this part.

Service 4wd light is constantly on while driving. The Jeep is at over 112,000 miles. My mechanic did a diagnostic check and the code that was provided was c14a7-97 ptu motor-component or system operation obstructed or blocked. I checked with the Jeep dealership for a possible recall and gave my VIN number. There are no current recalls. For 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokees where the ptu has not been previously replaced, the auto maker’s recall number is w47 and the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA)’s recall campaign number is 20v343. At the current moment I’m scared to drive this car. I drive my elderly mother and kids in this car. If these problems are due to a recall I need my car fixed by Jeep. They are the only ones that know how to handle this situation.

I start my car up and try to drive off and it would say shift gear into something then won’t let me leave the car is jerking hard or hesitation I get up to a certain speed it would just shut off or if I stop at a stop light it will shut off the engine but still have the acc on.

When gas pedal is pressed starting from a stop, the Jeep doesn’t move right away, then jerks forward. Also, when driving, it sounds like the automatic gear is not shifting up, sounds like the Jeep is “reving up”. Another thing happening, is as I start moving, I hear a clunk sound, towards the rear of the Jeep, like something might fall off.

As of this date: started about a year ago, when Jeep was over 150,000 miles. When accelerating to turn or from a stop sign or light, vehicle would stall, mimicking the feeling the vehicle ran out of gas. This occurred about once a month. Working at home and not driving my vehicle as much its hard to say if it would have occurred more often. Checked for any codes, none appeared. As I have recently started driving back in the office 3 days a week, the issue of stalling at any given time with no warning began occurring more often. Took it to trusted local service shop, they changed the purge valve pump and gas cap, as they were puzzled on the problem. Did not seem to matter if gas was full, half or under half. The issue occurred twice within 2 weeks. Service shop recommended taking to dealership. Jeep dealership are not aware of any similar issues. Which I found interesting as I researched and found massive posts from various Jeep forums as well as this one. They capped off hose to charcoal canister, hoping that would help. And told me its a process of elimination at this point. The next evening it stalled again. I have now parked my vehicle as this has become a safety hazard. Stalling anywhere at any given moment could cause a tragic accident. Will be contacting dealership to voice my concern. Hoping for a positive resolution.

My climate control module (part number 68103284aj which is now discontinued by mopar) went out, this was caused by simply changing the battery, since I had a dead battery. Here is the fun part, now I do not have ac/heat. It does not turn on. Which is very hazardous if it’s snowing or any type of cold weather since there is no way to defrost the windshield. I live in colorado, so I haven’t been able to drive my car in any sort of cold weather. Also, I cannot pass an emissions test because of this module being out- I have documentation. Passing an emissions test is required by the state of colorado in order to register my vehicle. So I cannot register my vehicle and I cannot legally drive my car on the roads of colorado until I register, so I this point my Jeep is potentially worthless. I have brought my Jeep in several times to get this fixed (dealer only fix - thanks Jeep) and they stated that a used part will not work in this situation because every module is tied to a VIN number, so it has to be a new part. This is absolutely ridiculous from mopar’s (Jeep) end. Considering they discontinued the part on a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. I have contacted mopar (Jeep) several times, calls and email. I have documentation. They were absolutely horrible to deal with in this situation. I stated the situation, put it in writing in emails and they returned to call and email me back weeks later to confirm that the part was discontinued - which I told them on the first call. And when I would call to check in on the situation they said they were escalating it and never got back to me. Then I emailed again, and they closed the case number. Please help! I cannot drive my car and I cannot even sell it/or trade in, no one is going to buy a car without heat in colorado. I will provide all documentation that I have of the situation.

Check engine light keeps coming on, then I loose power.

There is 3 things going on with this Jeep. First thing the service shifter is on. Second the power steering will go out and come back on at different times. Lastly if you shut the car off it may not start again for awhile and you will get a message on the dash that says engine to warm to start. I contacted Jeep they said to take it in. We aren’t in a position to just let them keep running diagnostics on our car we have a code reader and it is not throwing any codes. Our Jeep started acting up after they did the one recall on it.

Due to the safety recall 49a - I am told that I am to leave my vehicle parked nowhere near buildings or other vehicles as there is a fire safety concern with vehicles catching fire whether or not the ignition is on. I called the mopar line, and was not that it was not urgent and to take it to my Jeep dealership to have it examined to determine if I needed a rental - even though the recall states that it's to be parked due to a fire safety concern. The dealership says they were never given information on what was needing fixed so they wouldn't know what to look for - I call mopar back. They said they didn't know why I was told to go to the dealership and that if the recall doesn't state they'll offer a rental, then they won't offer a rental. But I can pay out of pocket for a rental and maybe get reimbursed by them for it, if they deemed it necessary. I have one vehicle, and I'm a single mother that drives her child to school. Explain to me how I'm to do that if they want me to park it? not to mention, the mopar cs refused to tell me it was safe to drive because she "couldn't say that. " so, I'm suppose to drive a vehicle that can catch on fire without even being on when it's my only means to drive my child to school or get groceries - and they can't tell me it's safe to drive but refuse to offer a rental because it's fine? how is this fine? this is a safety concern (as the recall states) and a serious liability with a possible lawsuit waiting. It's been recalled since may, it is now August, and they have no idea when it may be fixed - three months have already passed without a fix, and they think it's fine to drive while stating not to drive it. What am I supposed to drive? I can barely buy groceries, I have no credit cards to rent a vehicle. I'm literally terrified every time I drive my daughter anywhere because we could die. But mopar tells me it isn't urgent and I don't need a rental - when the recall, and them, say otherwise while stating it's fine. Deathtrap.

Recall 49a/NHTSA 23v-338. It has been over six months since I received this recall and there is no repair/fix available yet. When will this be corrected???? parking my car outside in this cold weather is not good for the car or me. When will this be remedied????.

The emergency parking brake engages on its own, and the car can not move forward. The car engine fails and stalls, the vehicle can not be shifted, and I have a loss of steering control. Dash reads error of parking brake needs service, power steering is out, and check engine light comes on. The car won't restart for approximately 1 hour and then turns over and starts. This problem happens intermittently with no warning. It has happened both when parked and moving. I have had the vehicle in at a Jeep dealership but they were unable to diagnosis. It appears to be part of the same case number.

My 2014 Jeep Cherokee is impacted by the 49a safety recall for power liftgate module, for which there is no remedy. I've been advised by Jeep's recall not to park inside, or park near a structure, or park near other vehicles as the vehicle can catch on fire, whether driving it or not. These requirements make my vehicle useless. I have called Jeep and was told I also cannot trade it in during a recall. I asked about compensation, or their providing transportation until a remedy is available, and was told that's not possible. This Jeep is obviously not safe and Jeep is not providing any solutions.

Recall 49a/NHTSA 23v-338 I cannot park my vehicle in my garage until there is a fix. I received the recall notice Jun 30, 2023 (three months ago) and there is still no fix!!! when will this be remedied???.

While driving, at any speed, for any length of time (sometimes minutes, sometimes hours) the car will act like it is shifting to neutral, no matter how fast I am traveling, it’s happened at 10 mph and up. It’s random, no rhyme or reason. It has been in 4 shops since November and does not code for errors. No one has found the issue. It is unsafe as it will redline the rpm, make the accelerator useless, and the only cure is to drop the car into neutral and abruptly stop. This can lead to a serious accident as there is not time to come to a safe stop or pull over safely on certain roads. It appears like this may be the same issue as a recall from 2016, maybe the fix didn’t fix the hazard? some lights flash on the dash. Immediately when it happens, the traction control light comes on, and occasionally the “service transmission” warning will briefly appear. My transmission has been checked multiple times now and it appears to be in good condition. One Jeep dealer thought it could “maybe” be a transfer case issue as it wasn’t going into gear. They did the w20 recall and it hasn’t had that issue since. The red lining and apparent neutral shift is still happening. We had another shop give us a 2nd opinion on the transfer case, it was functional and nothing was wrong with it. Two shops concluded the transmission and transfer case were fine. We have had three diagnostics on the car, one came back with a faulty oil sensor, which turned out to be unplugged, however we replaced it anyway to be safe. And one came back with voltage errors since it sat in their parking lot for a month, they replaced a battery cable and nothing else came up. But they were willing to replace the transfer case in a maybe, which prompted our second opinion. This is frustrating and I am terrified to drive it. The last time I did I nearly got hit by a semi truck when it redlined the rpm and I had to abruptly stop where there was no safe place to pull over. This happened 4x in 20 miles.

Pulling out of a parking spot and the vehicle just went into neutral and died.

On or about may 11th I received a notice of a recall on my vehicle. This recall notified me that my car could catch fire due to a faulty liftgate. The notice stated that there is no remedy available at this time so they recommended that I do not park near other vehicles or near any buildings. With safety being a concern, I reached out to the dealership that I purchased the vehicle from (carmax) to see if they could help me in getting a rental vehicle or a loaner vehicle, so that I could drive safely without any concerns until the recall is fixed. They refused to help me, stating that they did not manufacturer the vehicle so I had to reach out to the manufacturer for any assistance. I then reached out to Jeep, who is the manufacturer, and also tried to request any assistance in this matter. I first went to the dealership directly and asked if there was anything they could do to assist me and they denied me stating that Jeep does not provide any rental vehicle assistance in regards to recalls. When I advise them that this is a safety concern, they said I should reach out to customer service. I then called customer service with the number that they provided, and they also refused to help me. They stated that they could not provide any rental vehicle assistance or loaner vehicle, while I am waiting for the recall to be resolved. They stated they have no policy that requires them to do so. I advised them that this is a safety concern as my vehicle could catch fire based on the parameters of the recall and they said it did not matter. I asked to speak to any supervisor or management and they refused to connect me stating that the policy is the policy and the manager will tell me the same thing. I am requesting assistance in this matter, since it has been months without any remedy for the recall, and it is unsafe for my vehicle to be driven.
