40 Brake Disc problem of the 1997 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/17/1999

In less than 36,000 miles the vehicle was returned (4) times for warpage of front brake rotors. Rotors replaced completely (1) time. Dealer claimed that this was normal. I contacted (2) independent brake specialists and each indicated excessive heat was causing premature warpage. They suggested it be returned to the dealer for corrective action. I stopped a car wash to hand wash the vehicle and upon spraying the front wheels notice steam coming off the wheel. This indicates substantial over excessive heat. The dealer claimed this was normal and turning of rotors and replacing pads (non warranty) was the only answer. In my opinion this only corrects the symptoms and does not correct the problem. Cheap, inferior componentry is my opinion. I shall not by another Jeep or Chrysler product.

41 Brake Disc problem of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/15/1999

A day after a good rain when vehicle is first in motion (even in dry driving conditions) even at 5mph any pressure on the brake pedal results in the brakes locking up. I have consulted with the dealer and various mechanics and they think a film of rust is building on the discs, and said I must warm the brakes up? this doesn't seem like a logical answer, why should one have to warm the brakes. Is this a design flaw?.

43 Brake Disc problem of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/15/1999

At 12,000 miles I noticed a slight vibration in the front of the vehicle, I called the dealer, but decided not to follow up and bring it in at that time. In mid may, I was traveling on the MA tpke, and upon braking noticed a pronounced vibration in the fron end of the vehicle. My dealer, who is very reliable, took the vehicle and found the front rotors and rear drums warped. At first they informed me that Chrysler had chnged rotors without notifying them. Upon their further examination they found that my Jeep had the old parts and they replaced the rotors and drums. At 17,300 miles I noticed the same vibration in the front end when braking on i84 in CT. The dealer again inspected the rotors and found that they were defective. This time they will turn the rotors "on the vehicle" with Chrysler's okay. While the work is under warranty I question whether this will be a permanent solution to the problem. My complaint is no way to be construed as against the dealer, in fact the dealer encouraged me to contact Chrysler customer service, which I did. I have been informed by Chrysler that a technical bulletin is out concerning the disc brake problem. I have seen complaints on the NHTSA site, of "minor" pulsation in the disc brakes, the pulsation on my vehicle was very pronounced and in fact the vehicle was shaking. I question if a recall is in order. Thank you.

45 Brake Disc problem of the 1999 Jeep Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/04/1999

As in the technical bulletin the brakes are very poor and pulsating. At 12000 to 14000 the first time, if you are going xway speed and tried to stop the car vibrated very bad. I took the car in and they said there was a bulletin to replace the rotors. That was done, the car was ok until another 12000 miles. Same problem. The dealer replaced the rotors again. As a " good customer benifit" I know I will have to go thru this again. After 2000 miles the brakes are pulsing again. I have a '97 passport with 75000 miles and still have the origonal brakes. This is my wifes , there is no hi speed starting and stopping. I think this will be a safty problem in the future or at least an expensive one every 12000 to 14000 miles.
