Steering Problems of Jeep Cherokee - part 2

Today while driving, my vehicle’s power steering went out causing me to pull over to the side of the road. My car was running, but I was unable to move it. When I put it in drive, the lights on the shifter would flash, but the car would not change gears. The problem appears to be electrical as the battery is brand new, and the engine was running.

The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee longitude. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, the vehicle lost all power steering. The steering had became firm. The service power steering warning light was illuminated. The vehicle had been diagnosed. The contact was informed that the failure was due to a faulty steering gear. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and determined that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 72000.

After the weekend rain, I went to start the 2017 Jeep Cherokee it did not start. I had the battery car jumped and it started up when driving it the steering wheel locked up. The dashboard started to display antilock brake assist off system, power steering assist off system, service transmission restart in park with vehicle 0 speed, and so many red lights started flashing afterwards. I was in the car with my children a car that was coming behind me had to swerve around me as my car instantly stopped. This could’ve been a horrific or fatal car accident. I just hit my car check to renew my plates the emissions pass and everything safety was good. With this current situation, I would now have to get my car back to the dealership for further inspection, and will be without a car.

I believe the ptu is malfunctioning and causing the transmission to slip or jerk. I am experiencing uncontrolled movement while driving. The vehicle is available at any time for inspection upon request. This puts myself and 2 small children at risk while driving, therefore my ability to use this vehicle is extremely limited and high risk. I have taken it to a Jeep dealership in porterville CA who stated my transmission needed replacement. They verbally stated my ptu was ok but never confirmed it with documentation. I have taken it to private mechanics who could not find any issues saying that the problem is internal. The mechanics I have taken it to in the past year have not come to a solution other than to suggest I wait for a resolution to the recall. The service all wheel drive light came on/off about a year ago and was consistant for several months but has turned off for awhile now.

I bought the car in 7/23 at auto savvy sta fe new mexico, after 3-4 weeks the power steering wheel light on I called the dealer so they checked n then they said nothing is wrong so after that the lights . The car were 3 times at the dealer and the last time was there for 9 weeks. So they said they changed the steering column, the clock spring and the lights came back. So one time I lost the control, on the high way so after that I haven’t used the car.

The first is the shifter and harness recall that causes the vehicle to display "service shifter" messages randomly, and all of the shifter lights turn on. I was involved in a single vehicle accident at 5 am on October 5, 2023 on a rural road in deland, florida. I was on an unfamiliar road with a sharp curve and as I was trying to slow down the I was unable to slow down or steer the vehicle. It slammed into a cluster of trees and immediately the engine caught fire. I crawled out of the vehicle in pain from the force of the crash and was disoriented. A good samaritan came to my aide and called the volusia county sherriff. I can remember my 2019 Jeep Cherokee latitude was fully engulfed in very intense flames in less than 8 minutes. It was so intense it set fire to the wooded area. This wasn't the first problem I had with this vehicle. I purchased this vehicle new from a dealer in bowie, MD in 2019. Since that time I replaced all 4 tires due to numerous flat tires starting around 20k miles. I replaced the battery at less than 25k miles. I had braking issues when going downhill in the washington DC area which caused me to brake hard. I complained and the dealer said they did an inspection. I also had other auto service companies perform checks. I have most of the service records which have cost me so much. I am a disable gulf war veteran on a fixed income. I am now waiting for VIN verification by geico because the vehicle burned so hot that the engine block and everything metal (melted). Had I not gotten out so soon I would have burned to death.

The vehicle turns off while running, all lights on dashboard turn off and the vehicle dies completely. I lose power steering, brakes everything just turns off. After the vehicle comes to a complete stop I can put in parking again and the vehicle turns back on. This has happened 3 times already, luckily I have been driving it where there is no a lot of traffic, but no longer drive it on the highway it would not be safe. It happened after the light svc 4wd turned on.

Driving my vehicle back home for a local store 1. 5 mi from my house and the off road warning light came on and then the steering wheel turned left while I was driving on a straight away. Managed to get to my driveway but looks like the right front wheel has detached from the truck altogether and won't move. Could not get my truck no further than the edge of my driveway. It should not be coming apart like a puzzle.

My steering and braking go completely out of control when my uconnect radio goes crazy and switches to different stations,modes etc. I lost control of my steering and braking which lead me to run a red light and nearly crash.

There is 3 things going on with this Jeep. First thing the service shifter is on. Second the power steering will go out and come back on at different times. Lastly if you shut the car off it may not start again for awhile and you will get a message on the dash that says engine to warm to start. I contacted Jeep they said to take it in. We aren’t in a position to just let them keep running diagnostics on our car we have a code reader and it is not throwing any codes. Our Jeep started acting up after they did the one recall on it.

While driving the Jeep dashboard flashed multiple error messages power steering failure, forward collision warning off, etc.

I brought car in for oil change and was told the r front axle was leaking. Brought it to dealer for repair and told both that both front and rear axles needed to be replaced along with ptu. Was informed that the that was ordered was cancelled b/c 800 people across the country were looking for the same part. There were no safety warnings. I was told very unsafe to drive b/c front axle came out of ptu.

Turn into our street, windshield whippers came on. Fuse blown, take out still stay on. Kept changing them, fuse kept blowning. Replace mod with turn single, wheel part. Pic sent. Worked two weeks, did it again. Now they are saying it's the radio is pulling to much, relay needs to be replace the radio. Which mileage, radio, back up camera, whatever else is connected together causing the problem. This safety problem because back up could hit someone or something, whippers just coming on scared, hurting window, windshield whippers it self if dry out. This should be recall and concern. I don't understand why this not. Jow it's taken so long figure out problems at car place. They took the SUV apart still cant figure problem out. Thank you carolyn odom.

While driving at highway speeds the vehicle engine stalled. I was unable to restart the vehicle after multiple attempts during rush hour traffic. The check engine light is now on and ac has failed as well, vehicle was limped to a dealership. There was a known recall that was repaired back in 2018 on this vehicle but it appears to have come back.

Service shifter message has been appearing and at times, all lights on prnd lighting up. The vehicle transmission may still engage or may not. Recent occurrence on 07/13/2013, vehicle took 20 minutes before transmission engaged. Fortunately, I was parked at work, going home. If this occurred on the road, has potential of wreck happening. Jeep dealership leaning towards voltage error, cleaned battery terminals, test drove, could not replicate error. Did not drive until 07/17/2023, service shifter message came back without all prnd lights coming on.

The power steering control module adn the rack & pinion assembly had to be replaced.

My 2016 Jeep cheroke with 75,000 miles started to show a yellow 4wd service light. It would come on and off. I brought it to a Jeep service repair center, where it currently sits, and they confirmed the ptu is no good. Needs to be replaced at a cost of over $3,000. And to make matters worse, I was advised not to drive the Jeep because it is a safety issue! also, there is a recall out for "certain" Jeep Cherokees, not mine, with the same exact issue! my Jeep Cherokee was manufactured during the time of the recalled Cherokees but it isn't part of this recall at this point?! I do not have $3,000 to repair a failed ptu which is part of a recall but not my Jeep "yet," but if I am driving the Jeep and the ptu totally fails, the Jeep will lose power to the wheels and it can cause an accident. Jeep knows this ptu is an issue but won't help. This is a safety issue.

Service shifter keeps going on but no dealer ship know what the problem is and I have been stuck because of it.

I took my Jeep to get serviced on March 16, 2023 for a 'service shifter' light. This had already been replaced before and had a 2 year warranty so this was fixed however my issue now lies that last week around April 20, 2023, I got another light indicating "service 4wd". I took my car to the dealership today to be told the diagnosis was "internal pto failure". I was quoted an insane amount to repair and was told that the part is not available as it is on back order. After looking this information up online I see that Jeep had multiple recalls for this same issue for vehicles 2014-2017 however mine is not appearing on the recall. I called Jeep and was told there was nothing they can do and I'm extremely upset because the simple fact that the part is on back order let's me know that this is a common issue that others must be having as well yet Jeep has yet to take any action for their faulty equipment. This poses an immense danger for me because the repricautions are that if I drive my vehicle I am risking my life in that the car might come to a complete stop mid drive. Should I be in an accident I can only hope Jeep will take accountability for their ignorance and delayed responses. If Jeep is aware of ptu/pto issues with their vehicles all Jeeps within the 2014-2017 timeline should be eligible for this replacement under the recall and the part should be mass produced to ensure every customer gets from point a to point b safely. When driving my car home from the dealership I felt my car tug when making a sharp left turn and my car swiveled immediately thereafter. I also noticed that it is taking immense amount of effort for my car to accelerate when pressing the gas which terrifies me that it will simply come to a complete stop and jeopardize my life at any given moment. This needs to be addressed ASAP and a new recall needs to be issued to remediate this error.

This vehicle is designed to be a flat tow vehicle for a class a motorhome. No one made me aware of the death wobble and this caused an accident which could have been deadly. We did 13,000 dollars in damages to my motorhome and Jeep. After hours of research I found this to be a common problem from Jeep. I contacted the local Jeep service department and they were not aware of this. Come to find out there is a Jeep part to correct the problem, at a cost of $286. 39 and a labor charge of $460. 00 to install. If Jeep is aware of this problem, why are they not advising the public to not flat tow this Jeep until the necessary parts are installed. There is nothing in the manuals regarding this problem!.

A few months after I got the car, a bump feels at first gear before 2nd gear starts, its been doint it till today, a vibration started a year ago, it hasn't gone away, power steering went out year and a half ago or so, its electrical so I had to change the whole part, went car is turned off you can hear the vibration sound for a second, some mechanics say the motor mounts are worn out, who kmows. For 2015 to have theese problems? I have older cars and dont have these problems, wonder what these can be. Guess just bad car and still paying it, good thing its still runs, just hoping not to break the road.

My car just stated acting up I got several warnings, start stop not working, all the systems falling, I have checked battery and alternator but not luck it still have the same issues. Transmission not shifting. It died while I have’s driving on a really busy highway, luckily I was able to pull over.

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that their VIN was not included in a recall. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

At exactly 37000 miles my service “shifter light” comes on every 4-5 days. I’ve noticed in the warmer months it comes on more frequently. During the cold winter it came on twice. It’s becoming warmer again and it’s popping up often. My husband has a 2017 Jeep Cherokee with the same exact issue. Our dealership gave us no answer to this problem. Not sure why, I just hope this doesn’t cause a major issue or hopefully a recall soon to fix this!.

Electronic steering warning light came on. While driving the steering wheel tightens then loosens. It has not been right since the recall was on it and it was taken and repaired.

Transmission has malfunctioned, will not properly shift into higher gears, when stopped is not able to be put into park. Issue started with not warnings, was driving perfectly fine before. Cruise control has failed, parking brake has malfunctioned, and power steering has malfunctioned.

Ptu blew out on the highway at 68mph. Loss of steering. Ptu was replaced at a Jeep dealership and has also failed. I’m now having svc 4wd and acc unavailable. This is unacceptable.

The vehicle shakes and pulls riverside auto marinette wisconsin said 2600. 00 to fix the rack and pinion.

1) engine turns off while driving the vehicle and the dash tells me to shift it into park. After the car is stopped and shifted into park it makes a starting noise as if you are trying to start the vehicle as if it is flooded, but it will eventually start after approximately 30 seconds. After approximately 30 seconds the vehicle starts sometimes without even pushing the start button. 2) the vehicle dies often when turning, driving over small amounts of snow, backing up, or exerting the engine at all. It usually does not shut off while driving straight down the road without exerting any energy unless there is snow causing the engine to exert any energy. This has caused safety risks to me and others in the following manner: a) it has caused me to stall while turning onto the highway from side streets which I have narrowly avoided being t-boned and side impacted. This can cause injury or death to myself, my passengers, pedestrians, and traffic. B) it has caused my vehicle to stall while on the roadway when it exerts energy due to snow and causes me to spin the vehicle out of control in traffic which can cause injury or death to myself, my passengers, pedestrians, and traffic. C) it has cause me to stall while backing out, or pulling out of parallel parking with traffic which can cause injury or death to myself, my passengers, pedestrians, and traffic.

Jeep has 36,000 miles, it has a very knotty feeling in the steering wheel when trying drive straight. It feels like the steering wheel gets hung up when trying to slightly turn left/right. Constantly having to chase the road. No wrecks, or accidents on our Jeep. It happens at highway speeds and normal city driving as well. I read of a recall for steering gear in 2019-2020 Jeep but our Jeep is not showing a recall for this problem.
