Six problems related to alternator/generator/regulator have been reported for the 2006 Jeep Commander. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
All the electrical on my dash most the time is lines and flickers, but decides to show up once in a while for a minute or two. My big problem is starting the car. It does this click click sound most the time but then starts once in a while out of the blue. I have bought a new battery and alternator within the last year. It also slams from gear to gear! I have had four different diagnostic tests done by different places & I have been fighting with this for a couple years!.
Just as I was slowing down to 30 mph to enter a parking lot the entire dashboard lit up and then all lights faded and turned off. The ac turned off and the radio turned off. The car still continued driving but the power steering was gone, causing the car to shake and jolt mid turn. The brakes weren't working as they normally would resulting in a very dangerous situation had any other car been close to me at the time. I took it to my mechanic right away and he tested everything, including the alternator and the battery. Everything was functioning at 100% capacity and he couldn't find a reason for the check engine light to be on. This has happened 3 more times. I am unable to drive the vehicle in fear that it will break down or my family or another driver.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, several warning lights became illuminated. Additionally, the headlights became dim, the radio volume independently lowered, speedometer and tachometer fluctuated. The vehicle was taken to bald hill Dodge Chrysler Jeep ram located at 1035 bald hill rd, warwick, ri 02886, (844) 847-4671) however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact stated that several years ago, the alternator was replaced however, the replacement of the alternator failed to eliminate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 126,000.
1st problem was my interior lights flashing on and off. I could not get it to do it while at the dealers. 2008 I thought my transmission was going bad. The dealer said that my transmission had a leak and charged me to replace some part. Then it happened again. Then they said I needed to service the transmission. I am surprised that dealer never mention any problems with the Jeep Commander ( I thought it was just my car) as I have called several times about the car shifting into neutral, and wondering if it was a transmission problem. The problem comes and goes. I just paid my car off, and now when I ride on the express way and go past 60 the enitre car shakes bad. If I hit a bump I can hear something like a crack noise. Sometimes when I make a sharp turn I hear a click click noise. At this I didn't trust the dealer and was thinking that maybe it was my axil. Took it to pet boys and they could find anything wrong with it. They said I needed new tires, so I bought 4. The problem still continued. I am so upset as I am a single mom and just finished paying my car off. I also have had to replace the alternator, radiator, water pump, thermometer, which I though was normal as the car is 2006. Now past 2 days I can smell a funny smelly, white fog comes out of my vents, and the passenger side floor is wet. I googled the problem and it says that it is the "heater core". The tire light is alway on with no flat. The engine light comes on frequently and says check gas cap. So far I have bought 3 gas caps. I can't believe that I struggled to pay this car off and now having all of these problems. I am not sure which problems are normal wear and tear and which ones are a manufacturer problems, but this is a night mare. I am so mad that I ever bought my Jeep Commander. Jeep should be ashamed of themselves.
The issues I have had is stalling in my 2006 Jeep Commander. There is not any warning sign associated with this. My car has stalled before while driving on the expressway as well as while parked. There is no warning, it just stalls. While driving the car on the expressway it just cut off. Luckily I was in the far left lane and was able to steer the car to the shoulder. I turned the ignition off then started to car and it drove as if nothing ever happened. It also stalls while parked with no warning. There is no apparent reason. You then have to unplug the battery for at least 24 hours then hope it starts the next day. I have had the alternator changed and this problem still happens. What I was told by a mechanic is when I unplug the battery it is resetting the electrical control panel. But this has not helped. I still have the same problem.
My 2006 Jeep Commander seems to have electrical or computer problems, I'm not certain which. Since January 2009 I've had several instances when all the instrument panel lights, the heat, and radio flash on and off while I am driving and all the gauges fluctuate; during this time there is also a clicking sound. I've taken it back to the dealer several times and paid $100 to have their computer evaluate the problem but they found no problems. Recently, on 12/11/09 when the flashing was constant for over 5 miles of driving, I brought it straight to the dealer for an immediate evaluation. I asked if others reported similar problems I was told "no", so I was very surprised to see the number of individuals in your database with similar problems over the past 2 years. The service managers always want me to pay for additional evaluations but I believe this is a defect that needs to be addressed by the manufacturers. When the problem began I only had 55,250 miles on the truck. Currently the problem has gotten worst because it is more frequent and last longer. The dealer has a huge turnover of service managers and mechanics so each time I have to explain in detail what the problem is because the service managers pretend I'm the only one who ever complained about such a problem. I fear that the truck will stall in traffic and kill me or an innocent driver. The problem is I have no other means of transportation and I'm still paying for this truck. What can I do about this problem without resorting to discontinue paying for the defected vehicle? the dealer/service managers report no problems including battery, alternator, and computer working properly so currently I feel stuck and afraid of the ramifications of this defected vehicle.
