Six problems related to wiring have been reported for the 2006 Jeep Commander. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Takata recall as I was driving my car on the four lane my car started to have white rubber smelling smoke fill the car and all my dash lights went crazy, my radio kicked off and my speakers and my turn signals quit working. I started to panic and stopped on the side of the rode. I had my kids in the car so I first removed my children then tried to find the problem. At this point my car was completely full of smoke n it like as if it was burning down. My wiring in the cars passenger side rear floor board had caught on fire ! the fire burnt through my floor and my floor mats. I almost choked to death on the smoke and had to take the battery out of the car to kill the power and dump water on the floor.
1st my car has been having starting issues. The fuel pump was changed twice and that's not the issue. It seems to be coming from the wiring heading into the fuse panel in the engine. When I move it around it starts sometimes. And also when I put black tape around the wires it seems to correct the issues for weeks at a time. The problem is u never know when its gonna start or not. Now my engine, traction control and esp/bas warning lights are coming on. When that happens the transmission starts going haywire and feels like its only running on 1 gear plus when I reverse it feels like something grinds in the gears. However when those warning lights go off everything seems to go back to normal. Recently all the warning lights came on and the transmission over temp warning came on and my ac stopped blowing cold air and shortly after the car stalled in traffic on the highway. Thank god I was able to restart it but then it felt like the car drove all the way home using 2nd gear only in the automatic transmission. From reading other issues people are having online its obvious this model is having major electrical issues that no one seems to be able to correct. I am a Jeep lover but this model has completely made it difficult on me since its my only car and its so unreliable. I don't have the means to replace it right now so this situation has been unfortunate for me.
The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing numerous electrical failures. The lights on the instrument panel and the dome light would stop illuminating intermittently, and the vehicle would stall while driving at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they were unable to duplicate the failure. The contact was also informed that a previous owner replaced the wiring harness, but the failures continued. In addition to the electrical failures, the contact also stated that a grinding noise could be heard coming from the brakes whenever they were applied. The failure mileage was 32,000 and the current mileage was 68,000.
A/c blower only works on high, not any other setting. I've replaced the blower motor resistor on average of 3x per year (@ $32 from dealer). This is what I've been told by auto mechanics and the Chrysler dealer service dept. Is wrong with the a/c system. . . . And that "it's a common problem. " when the resistor is replaced, the a/c will work properly for a short period of time and then repeat the problem. Obviously, there is something causing this part to short/malfunction. After researching this topic (online/internet), I've found many Jeep owners have encountered the exact same problem. The problem is not the blower motor resistor, it is the guage of wiring Chrysler has used to install the system. The wiring can not handle the amps running through it, and the connection/wiring actually melts. This is the case with my vehicle, the connection at the blower resistor is melted. The system has a 40amp fuse, which does not blow before the wiring melts???. . . . . This is a fire hazard. Chrysler should have done a recall on this. I've opened a case with Chrysler, and so far have gotten nowhere with them. . . . . They just want me to take vehicle into dealer so they can charge me there outrageous rates for looking at the problem, then (according to the discussion threads online) they'll suggest I replace the whole blower unit/system for about $800. The only problem is the guage of the wiring is to small for the amps running the system, and the wiring needs to be replaced. I've heard there is a replacement wiring harness available, but when I asked Chrysler about this part they claimed to know nothing about it.
My 2006 Jeep Commander (4. 7 liter) constantly stalls and hesitates and the dealer keeps telling me they can't find anything wrong but there are hundreds of complaints online about the same thing and I want to know why this has not been recalled. Also the third row seat belts seem to have a problem.
Vehicle stalls at all speeds, whether slowing or accelerating. Vehicle has stalled at least 8 times in last several months. One time, I was driving more than 60 mph on an highway. When taken in for repair, Jeep claims they cannot find a problem although they admit other Commander owners are experiencing the same problem.
