Starter problems of the 2006 Jeep Commander

12 problems related to starter have been reported for the 2006 Jeep Commander. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Starter problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2016

2006 Jeep Commander randomly will not start. Battery tests fine. . . Took it to the dealer and paid over $400 and the replaced the starter and yellow solinoid cable which brings power to the starter. Still will not start occasionally. The dash lights up, but the engine doesn't turn over. . . Wait 5 minutes and it may start at other times it won't. Very frustrating, because it is random. . . May go a week starting fine, and then suddenly it won't start. Sometimes this happens first thing in the morning, sometimes only after short 5 minute trips to the store, and sometimes after long trips. Also, I already had the ignition switch replaced due to recall.

2 Starter problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2016

Intermittently will not start. Turn key on, get a half crank, then nothing. After 5-10 minutes of trying, it will finally start. Had an ignition recall, which the service was performed by Jeep dealer. They also replaced the starter. Still having the issue after having it looked at 4 times. They cannot replicate the issue when it is in the shop, so they cannot find any problem with it. Purchased the vehicle used in 09/15 and have been having the issue ever since.

3 Starter problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2016

This vehicle was recalled for the ignition switch experiencing an unintended change in ignition switch position and because the ignition switch was loose made it difficult at times to start and remain running. The vehicle was taken in for recall work and was supposedly fixed, however upon picking it up the vehicle was difficult to start and the dealership stated it was because of the new ignition system and that you had to press and turn the key just right for it to start. This condition only worsened the next week and eventually the car would not start at all. When the vehicle was towed to the dealership they started the starter and the wiring to the starter was fried and that it had nothing to do with the ignition replacement and said it would cost over $800. 00 to repair!!!.

6 Starter problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2011

Electrical issue that is causing all dashboard lights to flicker on and off, heat/air goes on and off, audio center goes on and off all electrical functions go no and off. Dealership blamed my remote starter(which they installed) but turned out it wasn't and they have no idea what it is. Say they can't determine what it is unless it is happening when I bring it in. The interior door opening casing crumbles. Already had drivers door fixed because I couldn't open door from inside and was told all doors would eventually have to be done. Doors freeze due to poor drainage. Water collects inside door frame and running board, freezing all doors. If not for the remote starter, wouldn't be able to get in the car at all.

9 Starter problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2010

My Commander is stalling while driving. And at times just will not start. Several incidents dating back to years. . I bought this Commander new, no miles. One incident I was driving going over 50 mph and all dash board lights came on and it just stalled. Another time stalled sitting at red light and all dash board lights came on and it stalled. And over 10 times it just won't start. Right now it is broke down, just won't start. Over the years I was told it was the starter it was replace 8/3/2010 (I had to pay for starter, labor and towing) then next time I replaced the battery. And still the same problems. I did a check on recalls and found the 2008 Commanders was recalled for the same reasons. Why haven't the 2006 Commanders been recalled? this is a very serious problem. I could be in a wreck when this happens. I have children in my Commander age 17 months and 8 months. This problem needs to be recalled and fixed. Chrysler knows this is a existing problem for other year Commanders, they fixed them why not mine??? and I feel since Chrysler accepted this recall in other years and if I wreck Chrysler will be responsible for my wreck and any injuries. All I want is for Chrysler to fix my Commander. . . .

10 Starter problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) 2006 Jeep Commander limited v8 hemi, Jeep stalls on highway any speeds, it locks up and shuts down. After I pull over its starts up again. The Jeep has stalled many times more than 20 since I owned it. I have had the cam and crankshaft sensors replaced also a new starter. The check engine light comes on and still say the cam or crank sensors the problem I spending way to much money getting the Jeep put on a diagnostic machine and coming up with the same problem. The Jeep is very unsafe. [xxx].

11 Starter problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2009

Problems began 1 day after Commander went in to dealer for the regular 3,000mile oil change, that car was returned to me after that oil change, as 'good to go'; w/in 24 hours of that oil change, the Commander would not start and required a new starter (30k miles). After the starter was replaced, the Commander was stalling if - in the middle of a slight incline it had to brake and then resume - at the resume it would stall. Also, after starter replaced dashboard lights blinking; transmission cooler lines leaking, power steering line from pump to cooler leaking, and front and back brake rotors had to be replaced (42k miles) 60k miles, the cruise control turns on by itself and the rear park assist turns off by itself; the water leak into front passenger well. Speaking with custom relations at Chrysler corporate regarding cruise control, rear assist and water leak problems they told me that they were not aware of these being a problem for most Commander customers; however, Chrysler Jeep is aware of these problems as evidenced by the technical service bulletins published on them yet Chrysler Jeep does not issue a recall/take fiscal responsibility for their manufacturer defects. More: Chrysler Jeep expects me to pay them to diagnose the problems so that then so long as I have paid a dealer to repair them they will consider (not necessarily approve; in the past they have in fact denied me reimbusement to fix these problems for which they have technical service bulletins on) refunding me total or partial cost of repairs. More: I was only informed of a safety recall regarding ebc module (brake) when I called in last week (12/2011) regarding the water leak & cruise control problem. Making this more poignant, the reason for this recall - that I was not notified about when it was first issued- is a brake issue that I had detailed to Chrysler Jeep in 2009!.

Additionally, the rear seat belt has let go and caused my son to hit his face on the back seat. Problems with seat belt latch sliding so that belt will not hook. Cannot see when backing up when my 5 kids are in the car. Tire pressure light comes on often, as does the air bag light. Exterior headlights are tilted so that they look like highbeams. This car is a danger.
