20 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 05/07/2012

Our 2008 Jeep Commander was hit from behind while making a right turn. The impact caused the Commander to flip landing on the driver side roof and then rolling onto the driver's side where it slid into another vehicle. The impact from hitting the roof and side of the car resulted in the car being totaled by the insurance company of the person at fault. The side air bags did not deploy when the car rolled onto it's side. Per page 52 of the owner's manual "the window bag on the crash side of the vehicle is triggered in moderate to severe side collisions" also page 56 states "the side impact srs side curtain airbags are designed to activate only in certain side or rollover collisions. " the entire driver side of the vehicle was crushed in, the driver side mirror was pushed through the window due to the impact. After the vehicle rolled it came to rest on the driver side. How much impact is needed to deploy these airbags? the driver side door alone was bent off of the frame. I can understand the front airbag possibly not being deployed as the vehicle was hit from behind, but I am surprised that the initial impact to the driver side roof corner side not trigger anything nor did the rollover and side impact that occurred.

22 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 03/30/2012

In March of 2012, I was driving my 2006 Jeep Commander v8 on a two lane highway. At the time of the accident, I had been decreasing speed, when the truck in front of me suddenly slammed on his brakes. However, when I pressed down hard on my brakes, my brakes/anti-lock brakes completely failed, causing me to crash into the truck in front of me. While trying to brake, my car stalled and continued to propel forward, causing a lack of steering capability, inevitably causing a crash, in which my air bags did not deploy. After the police arrived, I was able to start the car and barely made it home, having to push it several blocks. My SUV went into the shop for almost one month. After my SUV was fixed, including exterior and radiator, the SUV continued to overheat without cause and it was now considered a total loss. I was not prepared for my vehicle to be considered a total loss as the issues appeared to be minor. I endured major hardship as a result on this accident, including lack of work and occurred at an inopportune time for me to buy a new vehicle, resulting in a high interest rate and skyrocketing insurance, since I was considered at fault, despite lack of being cited due to vehicle issues. After 2 yrs, I finally was able to refinance my car; however, my insurance will remain high til Feb 2015 @$314 (35 mos). I did not realize why the vehicle's braking and stalling occurred as I was not made aware of the recall until July 2014! if recalls occurred in 07-09, why was I not informed prior to this accident? this accident could have been prevented! when I called to speak to Chrysler, they said that there was nothing that they could do because the car was scrapped. I do not understand why some people can be compensated for issues, but I am disregarded despite the ongoing hardship caused by a defect caused by Chrysler! is there anyone out there that can help!?.

Severe collision with the front end of my vehicle. I was driving at approx 50 mph when the car ahead suddenly stopped. I applied my brakes and skidded into the other vehicle's rear end. From the skid marks starting at the point of contact my vehicle took approx another 35 feet to stop. I believe my vehicle's speed was 30 mph. It was a solid hit as my vehicle nose dived and hit bumper to bumper. The rear of the other vehicle's bumper was forced down to the ground and gouged the pavement. My vehicle then continued to crush in the entire rear of the car and my hood struck the rear window. The other car then traveled about 50 feet further resting upon a telephone pole. I believe that the impact was severe and of sufficient speed that the air bags and or the seat belt retractors should have engaged. I was seat belted in at the time of the impact but still received a minor concussion and whiplash. My vehicle's damage was quite severe and is estimated in excess of $14,000. 00.
