Interior door handle plastic housing broke on two of four doors, the driver front and passenger rear. The drive side cracked when I opened it. The passenger rear broke in half when my 5 year old daughter opened the door. This is now a safety issue as the door is very hard to open.

Passenger rear door handle insert broke during a rear end collision, it is now cracked.
The door handle on my Jeep Commander is cracking. My son went to open his door and his fingers got caught on the crack part of the door handle and we could not get his fingers out without him suffering.
The plastic panel of the interior door (driver's side) cracked by the door handle. One day I pulled the interior door handle, the crack in the panel grew and pieces crumbled and fell into the door. Then the handle fell into the door. Now the only way to open the door is to lower the window and open it from outside. This is a major safety issue, and I apparently am not the only one. . The interior door handles crack and break: this is safety hazard trap for many consumer because you can't open the door from the inside if in an accident or in an emergency. I have been following this complaint since this vehicle came out on the market several hundred and so far nothing has been to correct this problem. Only having the consumer fix it their self which is very costly to fix. My dealer shop quoted me 500. 00 per door and I have 2 that are badly cracked and broken : please consider a recall on the door handles and think of the safely of adults and children . This happens by just opening a door due to poor product select on the manufacturer.
All four door handles have fallen apart, first by the door panel cracking and giving way, then the handle assemblies fell to pieces over time. My daughter recently cut her hand trying to open the door from the inside, and the only way to exit the vehicle is to roll the windows down and open the door from the outside handles. In my particular case, the 2 rear window motors have failed, so the rear passengers are trapped until someone up front lets them out. This is a serious safety issue for all passengers in the event of an emergency requiring a quick exit from the vehicle. The entire door panel is required to be replaced in order to fix this issue, quotes are about $600 per panel. This should be an expense borne by the manufacturer.
My vehicle paint is "spidering" and cracking on the hood. You wouldn't think this could happen since it sat in a garage for almost a year while I was deployed, I wax it religiously and it is used very little. When talking to the Jeep dealer, they make it sound like it is acceptable wear and tear. I think there is a flaw in the paint used for that specific year and possibly manufacturing location.
Like many other consumers that own this vehicle, the driver's side interior door handle housing cracked and broke. This creates a significant safety issue.
Interior door handle housing on all 4 doors becomes extremely brittle and cracks. When this happens the door handles become unusable from inside while parked. To exit the vehicle one must use external handle to easily open the door when stopped. After breakage, doors tend to open with pressure, from leg, on the handle while car is moving. Replacement of the entire interior door panel is require to fix.
One interior door handle (right rear) was broken when I purchased the vehicle, rendering the interior door handle inoperable. Within two months, my left rear handle broke in a similar fashion (crunching sound under light use). The interior handle 'cup' shattered in approximately 12 pieces, rendering that door handle inoperable. The driver's front shows several large cracks, and the passenger front shows 2 cracks. All have been rebuilt/reinforced using an epoxy stick. Jeep unwilling to assist as a defect. I am highly concerned that this could cause an inability to egress in an emergency situation.
All four of my door handles cracked and broke out within the same year. It scratches you or catches your fingers in them. I have to open the doors in the back for whomever is in the vehicle. This is extremely unsafe! if I have an accident my back passenger could possible be trapped inside the vehicle.
My daughter was driving down the hwy and a car came out in front of her from the left side and they hit. The other car's air bags all went off. My Jeep not one air bag went off after totaling the front end going through a ditch hitting a guard rail etc. Police but on report they went off just took it as they should of because of how bad she was hit. My daughter has back problems the other person cracked hip had to have back surgery. My daughter has to have surgery to but they wouldn't ok it at time so now applying for disability unable to work. We have every recall that you have list on here wrong with our Jeep and more. It starts to reve up as if putting gas on while holding brake or while just driving down the street, I was in car waiting for car in front of me to go with foot on brake it jerked so hard I thought I got kit in the back. We have taken it in to have tests run on the Jeep and they come back saying nothing wrong with it. So looking to trade in but the police report wrong trying to get that fixed. Since accident the air bag light goes on might stay on or go off and on. I feel that there is a problem with the air bags but told they can't check unless take apart etc to look at them. They should have gone off in accident. The tire light is on all the time. So I feel unsafe driving my Jeep with two small children in it. We have taken it in for the recalls they say not for our Jeep VIN # and refuse to fix them have asked other people with same Jeep and they all got same problems. We have talked to the Jeep people over computer and they say they have no answer for air bag problem at this time. What is that suppose to mean.

Apparently there is/was a defect in either the design or production of the door handle assembly in the 2006 Jeep Commanders. The plastic housing which contains the door opening mechanism becomes too brittle and cracks rendering the opening mechanism inoperable. On my Commander all but one door is affected. At the moment, only two out of the four doors work, the front-side passenger and the driver-side rear. If this vehicle was in an accident in which there was a need to exit quickly (fire or water), the lives of my family would be in extreme jeopardy. I posted a video on youtube, and have heard from many other with the same issue. Chrysler Jeep produced approximately 80,000 of these vehicles in 2006. I truly believe there are thousands of there Jeep Commanders on the road with this same issue. In fact the condition is so prevalent; one company is producing an after-market repair kit. .
