37 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

38 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 02/02/2007

We purchased a 2006 Jeep Commander in July of 2006. Since we have owned it, we have had 2 rock chips, that we have had patched. Since then, we have 4 different cracks that have all started below the windshield wipers, and all 4 cracks started within 24 hours of each other. First, it seems that Jeep Commanders are much more susceptible to rock chips than any other car that we have ever owned. Second, the latest 4 cracks do not seem to even have started from rock chips, but since they have all started from the bottom of the windshield, below the windshield wipers (when the wipers were not being used at all), this seems to us to be some kind of design flaw with the Commander's windshield. Perhaps the windshields are just too big, too straight, with little to no slope at all, or just not made sturdy enough. It just seems that there is a design or quality problem with the windshield, and we are concerned about the Jeep dealership that we went to not being willing to repair this problem under warranty. We don't drive our cars on gravel roads at all, we have not driven them through any construction zone areas. We drive them on normal, generally good condition roads, and it doesn't seem reasonable that in 9 months time, we have had 2 rock chips, and now 4 different cracks. We don't feel that we should be responsible to pay $500 to have a windshield repaired, that we are concerned with once it is repaired that the same problem will continue to happen, again and again. We have talked to a few other Commander owners, and they have all experienced the same problem we are having. One couple that we know that owns a Commander is on their 3rd windshield. There seems to be an issue with not just us, but other Commander owners also. We are wondering what Jeep plans to do to rectify this problem? is a recall being considered? is a better, stronger, windshield even a possibility, or is the windshield is just too large, and too straight up and down to not constantly have this problem.

39 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 01/03/2007

Have 3 chips in windshield. Seems the design is flawed and stones etc don't skip over like other models they hit straight on the glass and chip or break.

40 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 11/03/2006

When at or below freezing the windshield wipers will not make contact w/the windshield in certain areas. Medved Chrysler /Jeep replaced the windshield wiper blades, which already was replaced with 3 different types prior to them, it did not change. They then replaced the r/f wiper arm, with no change. I asked if the windshield could be the problem, Chrysler would not replace the windshield. Elite replaced the windshield @ no charge to medved or me. It became even worse!!!! I have seen other Commanders driving towards me w/the same problems in the same area of the windshield. The zone rep for Chrysler even stated "mine does the same thing. " the obstruction of view directly in front of the driver and passenger is dangerous!! Chrysler "can't see any physical defect" so it is not a problem. The service manager for the castle rock branch of medved was able to see it all happen firsthand. He called chyrsler, and they blew him off as w/the the first time he called them w/ my complaint. I have called Chrysler's 1-800 number and they were less than helpfull, said "it is up to the dealer you took it to to make a decision. They have done all they can; this is a engeniring or windshield manufacturer defect that is dangerous! this vehicle cannot be driven @ or below freezing w/out the windshield wipers loosing total contact in a circle pattern directly in the drivers and passengers direct line of vision in front of the vehicle, only changed by pulling over and blasting the windshield w/full heat and full defrost with the wipers on medium/high until the circles are gone. Once driven again the circles start small and become larger the more you drive it even w/full heat and defrost!! the defroster air flow seems good in the center of the windshiedl but lower as it goes out to either side.

41 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 09/30/2006

'06 Jeep Commander 4x2 - (1) stalls intermittently during turns which are both from moving and stopped positions. Many have occurred during a u-turn from a stopped position - unable to duplicate, in shop again (2) has a rough idle, which at times is more severe than others, but has never died - has just shaken severely a few times. There is no set pattern. It occurs during cold and hot weather, with electrical devices on or off, in park/neutral/drive, if the engine has warmed up or is still cold (3) the original windshield - continuous rock chips, cracks, etc - replaced @ 11,000k with a non-Jeep brand glass and to date the new windshield has only 1 star chip. Have heard the design of the windshield is reason for the windshield breaking easily, but the glass is not sufficient/durable (4) transmission fluid leaking from o-rings - replaced (5) rear spring seats squeaking - insulators replaced (6) excessive wind noise from front passenger side - at 22,500k dealership said only normal wind buff, at 24,000k dealership said unsure where it's coming from but will reseal front windshield (7) front driver window made grinding noise - motor replaced (8) short in audio/speaker system - radio assembly replaced (9) front driver power lock motor whining during autolock in cold weather (10) back up sensor doesn't sound until 1' before object (11) alert to check reverse sensor and wouldn't start- towed, battery replaced (12) middle seats hard to fold up (13) front windows go down instead of up(14)vehicle hesitates when put in drive/ reverse (15) steering whines.

42 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 08/16/2006

I took my 2006 Jeep Commander to my local dealer where I originally purchased it to get the stalling problem fixed. Five days later the service manager said that the problem was now solved (August 24,2007) finally. The service department said they put in a new program that would fix the Jeep from just losing power. August 25 Saturday morning at 8:13 while at an intersection the Jeep just died again. Another problem is the windshield breaking easily. I believe the problem with the breaking windshield could be related to the inproper fitting of the windshield which results in a loud noise being heard inside the vehicle. The dealership said they won't fix the seal problem because my Jeep has two cracks on it. I said "if you had fixed the windshield seal problem the first 3 times I brought it in we wouldn't have this problem'. No problems have yet to be solved. Ancira dealership in san antonio,TX. Many Jeep owners are purchasing multiple windshields at $385 a pop. The dealer tried to say it's just me until I pointed out all the other complaints in writing with all different VIN numbers and even showed her the rental car (Jeep Commander) which also had a cracked windshield. She's convinced too.

43 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 08/09/2006

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Commander. The windshield was repaired by a glass shop five times because of a chip in the glass. The windshield was also replaced once due to a crack. The vehicle was parked in a garage at the time of the failures. While driving 60 mph, the windshield makes a whistling sound. The current mileage is 21,000 and failure mileage was 1,000.

44 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 08/01/2006

Front windshield seems to be easily damaged. I initially thought it was just another pebble but when it happen again while I was driving down my neighborhood street I realized something was wrong. I think the problems I'm having with a whistling noise that's heard while driving which points to a seal problem are associated. When a windshield is not properly fitted it can lead to the glass being more sensitive to damage. My dealer would not fix the seal until I replaced the windshield until I pointed out they are associated.

45 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 05/25/2006

Within 500 miles of owning a new 2006 Jeep Commander, a small stone glanced off the windshield leaving a chip. Almost immediately, the chip began to run. A few days later, some mud was flicked up by a lawnmower shattering the window in a number of places. Funny thing is, the paint stood up to the thrown mud but the windshield shattered.

46 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 04/15/2006

Windshield easily cracks. Door handles is wobbly and then cracks and falls out of panel.

47 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 04/06/2006

The windshield of my 2006 Jeep Commander limited seems to be very vulnerable to cracks. I have had 2 rocks hit me and have gotten them repaired within the first 3 months of owning the vehicle. It is a very expensive windshield to maintain; is this a design flaw?.

48 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 03/12/2006

Windshield cracked by small pebbles driving under 45 mph. It has happened twice. The later was on 3/12/2006.

49 Windshield problem of the 2006 Jeep Commander

Failure Date: 02/23/2006

Windshield isn't sealed properly which causes a loud whistling noise while driving. Dealer could not fix problem. Further more, the seal problem seems to make the windshield more sensitive to being damaged.
