35 problems related to brake disc pads have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving 45 mph, the vehicle stalled but continued to roll forward. The contact had to shift the gear shifter into the park position to get the vehicle to come to a complete halt. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake pads needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 186,000.
: the contact stated at 40 mph, the vehicle wobbled and the brakes pulsated while pressure was applied to the pedal. Also, the abs light illuminated intermittently. The dealer replaced the front rotors, calipers and pads, which corrected the problem for a short time. The vehicle has been to the dealer for this problem several times to have the rotors turned or replaced. The average time between failures is about 6000 miles. In 2004 the contact took the vehicle to another dealer who replaced the rotors. Again, the problem has reoccurred and the dealer determined that both the front and rear rotors needed to be replaced.
: the contact stated while applying the brake pedal there is a squeaking noise and the steering wheel shakes vigorously. The brake pads have been replaced twice in 10,000 miles and need to be replaced again. The dealer can not determine the problem. The vehicle is currently at an independent repair shop for replacement of the pads for a third time.
Vehicle feels like it's riding while the parking brake (?) is engaged, at times only, not always. There just seems to be a sort of resistance noticed. It's been going on for about a year now and, although I've been telling my husband of it during this entire time, he just noticed the other day that, while en-route to a nearby location, upon arrival, the rear passenger-side tire area was smoking a bit. He said it was coming from the brake pads (?), and he got a cup of water and poured it on the area, to which it produced a bit more smoke, of course. Now I'm certain of the resistance and I'm concerned that the brakes will wear down prematurely and won't be working when I desperately need them and have my children in the vehicle with me, which is always.
Third time in as many years the brakes (pads and rotors) have had to be replaced. Violent pulsing on brake pedal, at highway speeds steering wheel shakes violently because of front brakes pulsing. Major safety hazard to occupants and those in other vehicles.
Brakes warp and car shakes and shimmies when braking. Dealer has repaired 5 times and repair lasts approximately 2 months. This is an extreme hazard. Chrysler will do nothing. The NHTSA has done nothing in spite of hundreds of complaints on their web site. I am sure there are thousands more that have not been reported on this site. The car is a safety risk. These cars should be recalled and the brakes totally replaced at Chrysler's expense. Why has nothing been done?.
Had front brakes serviced may 2003 new rotors, pads. August 2004 had to have new calipers, pads and rotors resurfised. Because calipers failed and almost started tire on fire. Told there is a service bulliten ref putting on different calipers.
Brakes pulsate and steering wheel shakes - dealer has repaired 4 times - vehicle only has 25,500 miles. Say manufacturing defect but will no longer repair as there has not been a recall on vehicle. Since there are so many reports of this - why has there not been a recall? there has not been a crash, but with faulty brakes, it can only be a matter of time. How can Jeep get away with this - they know and acknowledge the problem.
Dealer replaced at 11,000 miles the front rotors and pads. At 16,000 miles, the front rotors and pads were replaced. At 35,000 miles the rotors were resurfaced and the pads were replaced. At 45, 000 miles the dealership indicated they needed to replace the calipers, and install a bigger caliper. The warping front rotors caused pulsating brake pedal and an uncontrollable steering wheel.
Brakes do not react properly when trying to stop. Rotors and pads were serviced at least three times. Manufacturer examined vehicle, and stated no defects were found.
While driving there was severe vibration in the front end of the vehicle. Dealership replaced the rotors and pads six times, but problem recurred.
1999 Jeep cherokee. Warped and continous problems with rotors and calipers. Problem continues shortly after having them fixed repeatedly. The pulsations at high speeds(55mph) are violent. Saw the same/similar complaints by many others. Dealer says Chrysler not responsible. How many times can you afford to fix the same problem? something that has no remedy must be a design fault.
Consumer had the 5th set of new rotors and pads put on. While searching NHTSA website saw there were many complaints on brake problems.
While driving, there would be severe vibration in the front end of vehicle. Dealer replaced front and rear brake pads. However, problem still occurring.
Ongoing replacement of rotors and pads. After 108000 miles I have had at least 5 sets, turned rotors at least 2x and now they need it again. Chrysler says I have to pay $500 to fix. Absolutley absurd!!!!!!!!.
In April of 2002 I purchased a used 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a local dealer because it had only 14000 miles on it. I have had to replace the brake rotors and pads due to vibration 2 times. At 46000 miles I put new tires on this to quiet a noise problem. Now at 65000 miles the noise is extreme coming from drive train. I was told today there is a defect in the ring/pinion gear assemblies used on the 99/00 model year Jeeps. But there has yet to be a recall regarding this condition. I am very disappointed in the durability of the product, as it should have lasted far longer than 65000 miles, especially for the amount paid for it! hopefully Chrysler will take responsibility for poor engineering and design quality. But I doubt it. The roaring and howling noise is so loud that you can not hear others talking at road speed, and I am greatly concerned about the safety of the vehicle, but due to the great cost of it, I cannot trade it or afford to repair it because I am on disability!!!!!!!!!!.
Brakes pads and rotor failure bought new at 8000 rotors vibrating and pulsating and agian at 12-13000 and again at 22000 and again at 36000 and once again at 45000 dealer did take care of the repairs but at one time they charged me for pads at 102. 00 very high and right know I have 56000 and again rotor vibrating.
Consumer complained about a transfer case problem. When driving at approximately 40 mph there was a loud clanking sound coming from the front undercarriage. Consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was told the vehicle had dusty brake pads, but that was not the issue. Then, consumer was told that the constant velocity joints were leaking. Also, consumer was told that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. Consumer felt that the dealership did not know what the problem was, and perhaps was covering up the real problem. Recall campaign; component: fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:injectors. The consumer stated that the vehicle would not start. The consumer stated that the engine had an extended crank before starting. Fuel pump assembly and pump crank repair kit installed. The consumer stated that there is a shimmy when the brakes are applied. When sitting at a stop light having the vehicle in gear it vibrates. The left outer cv boot was leaking. The engine light came on. The consumer stated that the transmission slams into gear.
Warped brake rotors, rotors replaced at 18,984 miles at no charge, dealer strongly reccommended replacing brake pads @ cost to me of $572. 27 . Problem reoccurred at 27,278 miles. Dealer replaced front rotors at no charge. At 35583 mailes, dealer again replaced front rotors. I was assured that Chrysler was aware of the problem. Now at 65,000 miles the rotors are warped again. Dealer says Chrysler will not pay for repair. How many more of these complaints are required before NHTSA takes some action to resolve this issue??.
Vehicle experienced major pulsation when braking, the brake and disc rotors were warped, dealer replaced those and a a pad kit, shoe kit parking brake, shoe kit rear disc brake, seal axle drive shaft, and brake shoe and lining assembly, about 6000 mile later, problem returned, brake pads and rotors were replaced along with the shoe kit front disc brake. Gear kit center differential, gear kit ring and pinion, bearing -drive pinion, shimdrive pinion, seal drive pinion, and shim differential pinion were replaced. About 12000 miles later, vehicle is experiencing brake pulsation again, dealership is stating the vehicle has rotor runnout front and rear, this will be the fourth set of brakes on this vehicle, consumer states this is a safety hazard that continues to occur.
Warped rotors at 15,000 on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Front rotors replaced with new style brakes, but warped again at another 15,xxx miles.
Premature warpage of front brake rotors, excessive wear on front and rear brake pads.
When driving over 55 mph vehicle vibrated when the brake pedal was pressed. Dealer tried on five different occasions to fix the problem. The calipers/rotors, and pads were replaced, some more than once.
The brake rotors and pads keep wearing out, and the vehicle makes a chatter noise and vibrates when the brakes are applied. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealership and the brakes were replaced six times. The problem started on August 21, 2000. The replace brakes wore out at six to seven thousand miles. The dealership replaced the front rotors, the pads, the front calipers, installed a technical service bulletin ( TSB) kit, resurfaced the front rotors, rear brakes pads, and rear rotors; each of these have been done multiply times. There have been no accidents as of yet.
When driving and upon depressing brake pedal to make a gradual stop, consumer notice vibration in steering wheel, causing poor vehicle control. Consumer has contacted dealer, dealer noticed brake pads and rotors needed replacing.
Purchased 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited in Dec of 99. Since that time have had brakes worked on 3 different times, twice by Jeep and now midas because of steering wheel shimmy when brakes are applied. Since midas replaced w/upgraded ceramic pads, the problem came back again.
While driving severe vibration occurs in the steering wheel due to premature wearing or warping of front brake rotors. Brake pedal vibrates when brakes are applied and the steering wheel vibrates started at 9000 miles. Rotors and front brake pads were replaced at 12,132 miles. At 16000 miles, the brake pedal started pulsating agian.
While driving 50 mph and attempting to apply the brakes, the vehicle vibrates and brakes pulsate, dealer informed consumer the pads were not efficient of government requirement, feet are left on brakes after stopping causing the discs to warp, the disks were checked and they were not warped, there could be another part within the abs causing the problem.
While driving could step on brake pedal and brakes will start vibrating without prior warning. Also, resulting in extended stopping distance. Where a technician at dealer said that problem was caused by pads that had been replaced on this model.
While driving about 35-40 mph +, there is vibration every time when braking which may cause extended stopping distance. Took to dealer 3 times. Dealer resurfaced rotor and replaced rotor. Currently, there is a TSB on this problem which dealer needs to replace rotors and brake pads. Recently , the dealer replaced brake pads and resurfaced front and rear rotors.
I have had at least 6 full sets of rotors and pads. If I remember correctly, 2 sets have been turned and rotors replaced. On time Jeep actually told me my dealer didn't have the right tool so they had me bring it to another dealer!! I have complained and they deny any responsibility. They paid for most of the jobs up to 70k but I have paid for the last several. I moved and can't find my records, and Jeep won't release my repair history to me, they say it is proprietary. I maintain that since they never engineered and manufactured the parts correctly, they are still responsible. They are incredible about this considering that 2 different Jeep dealer service managers told me they have many, many owners w/same problems. I can't believe this hasn't been covered by recall, considering jep has issued 4 TSB's pertaining to the brakes. My old dealer in NY told me they would send me my service history, I am waiting for that. Please help!!! there are 1000's of us check the NHTSA web site. . . . . .
Brakes squeak while coming to a stop due to bad pad and brakes vibrated and pulsated because rotors needed resurfacing, replaced both parts however vehicle is starting to experience problems again. Yh.
Vehicle is having many problems with abs and brakes, on one occasion, front brakes locked up, causing skidding and shaking throughout steering wheel, TSB 879 has been complete, rotors have been found warped several times and have been replaced, brake pads have been replaced, pulsation and vibration are felt due to faulty brakes, however dealer can not remedy problem. Torque converter was replaced, consumer states that a noise is in the transmission after driving a while. Engine surges while driving at 55 mph and above.
Vehicle vibrates, and when consumer applies brakes, pads go all the way to the floor. Dealership is aware of problem.
The brake pads are extremely noisy and only half worn, unable to rectify noise.
