Severe shimmy when applying brakes at speeds > 8 mph. Dealer replaced rotors 1/11/01 @ 15k miles - I paid for rotors, dealer paid labor. Service manager told me today that 30% of Jeep customers worldwide have this problem; 50% of owners in midwest. Told me that since I have already paid once, Jeep will pay full cost this time. Also indicated that since it was not "safety related" (I. E. The car still stops) no recall has ever been issued.

Thank you.

19 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2001

I purchased my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo, in January of 1999. Since I have had the vehicle I have had both front brake rotors serviced four(4) times. The first time was August 30, 2000, at 30,070 miles. The second time was December 12, 2000, at 36,242 miles. The third time was March 16, 2001, at 41,560 miles. The forth time was August 1, 2001, at 44, 288 miles. The first time they were serviced, the service department, at mccafferty had to cut the front rotors. The 2nd thru the 4th times the front rotors had to be resurfaced. I have had to pay for service, all 4 times, the dealer saying it was from normal "wear and tear". On one occasion I talked to mr. Bob gundy, whom I believe is the service manager at mccafferty Jeep. I told him that I had been told that I had been asked, by another service advisor, if I had a heavy foot on the brakes, being told the damage might be from this. I told the advisor, at the time, I did not. Mr. Gundy stated that it was nothing wrong that I did, but a defect caused by the wheels getting bigger, the brake pads getting bigger, but the front brake rotors staying the same size. This, he told me, caused the front brake rotors to warp, and becoming damaged. He stated, to me, it was because of this. I know, from talking to several other Grand Cherokee owners, that the same problem has occured with their vehicles. The steering wheel shimmying, when the brakes are applied at high speeds. Although not yet a general recall, I believe that the nhytsa should look into this matter, with a possible recall justified, down the road. I thankyou for your attention to this matter.

20 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2001

When stepping on brakes there's a vibration in vehicles pedal and the wheels. Please provide any further information.

21 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2001

Total of 4 total brake(rotor/pad) repairs needed alomg with: rear diff, oil seals, calipers, steering stabilizers, brake lines. All mileage is highway with little brakage.

22 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2001

Brakes pulsate and jerk when applying brakes. Rotors and the pads have been replaced repeatedly for over last three years. Contacted dealer, and dealer is not wlling to do anything.

23 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2001

The brakes in my 99 Jeep warp every 10,000 miles causing the vehicle to violently vibrate when breaking at highway speeds. I was told "yeah it was a design flaw" by the dealership when I first brought it in and that they have this problem with most of the Jeeps they sell. Every 10,000 miles!!!! I do not commute or drive grades. 10,000 miles per rotor resurfacing.

24 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2001

Around 50 when brakes applied, car vibrates. Dealer fixed problem around 22000 miles but problem returned.

25 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2001

I purchased the vehicle in oct 2000 with 28000 miles. We have approximatly 29500 miles on it now. When driving a freeway speeds the steering wheel will vibrate quite severly. Traveling down hill will make this problem more pronounced, eg. More vibration. I called the dealer and was informed that this is not covered by warrenty. I replaced the front discs myself and found that the front discs had allready been cut to the wear limit stated on the discs. Less material left on discs warpage a lot sooner. It appears that many other owners of this vehicle have had to repalace disc for the same problem. In conclusion vibrating steering wheels take your attention off the road and pose a dangerous situation when it happens. I am sure you will find a mountain of brake dsics attesting to this problem. Hopefully no accident damaged people.

26 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2001

The second failure of the rotors and pads occurred at 16,065 mi. And the dealer agained replaced the rotors and pads. This vehicle in less that 2 years had three sets of rotors and pad, I. E the original, the first replacement and the third set in less than 1 year 10 months. The dealer indicated to me that next regardless of when it happens will cost me an est. $450. 00 . The first failure was 09/20/00 and the last failure was 06/14/01. Something is wrong with the brake system in this Jeep - I been advised that some 1999 Jeeps were recalled for the same problem but not mine--help please thanking you in advanceoriginal rotor and pads failed at 9,564 mi and the dealer replaced the parts at no cost.

27 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2001

Excessive ,front, brake rotor wear,,brake pads still have over 10%pad left .

30 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2001

Rotor/brake pad failure.

31 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2001

Front rotors warped and car vibrates badly when braking on freeway. Front rotors resurfaced @ 11,117 miles, front rotors and pads replaced @ 20,126 miles, and front rotors replaced @ 32,314 miles. Car shakes dangerously when coming to a stop off freeway or speeds of around 40+ mph.

32 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 12/15/2000

Severe pulsation at highway speed when applying brakes. Vehicle been into dealer.

33 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2000

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee chronic brake system problem the front wheels pulsate and the steering shimmies when the brakes are applied at highway speeds. Safety is a major concern since the problem becomes more pronounced under urgent braking conditions. Jeep service has made six (6) attempts to fix the problem without success. History:the Jeep service department has made six (6) unsuccessful attempts to fix the problem only to have it reappear approximated 5,000 miles after each service attempt. The warranty period for the brake system has now expired and in spite of the six failed attempts the Jeep service area manager has suggested that he can no longer continue to pay the cost of these service calls and it will become my responsibility. I have rejected his last service recommendation that would require me to pay for new brake pads and installation labor, while Jeep service would replace the defective rotors at no charge. There has been no reassurance that this would resolve the problem. Problem diagnosis: the cause of the pulsating problem has been attributed to a condition that is causing the brake rotors to over-heat and then warp. The six (6) attempts to correct the problem have entailed four (4) front wheels rotor resurfacing experiments, one (1) front wheels rotor replacement and one (1) recommendation this week to replace the rotors again. The service representative has suggested that the vehicle driver is misapplying the brakes and causing the problem. (this is pure speculation and an unsubstantiated accusation) my position is that a Jeep brake system design or product failure exists that has not yet been identified and at this time there is no known solution to the problem. Resolution:my first preference is that Jeep fix the problem and allow me to enjoy the vehicle I selected to purchase almost two years ago. An alternative would be for Jeep to continue making the necessary repairs to the brake system until they solve the problem.

34 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2000

Brakes pads are causing rotors to warp, dealership is aware of problem.

35 Brake Disc problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2000

Hard pulsation when applying brakes most noticeable at higher speeds. Two identical defects in about five months. Two different service centers repaired same by re-facing rotors. One in FL and the other in NJ.
