118 problems related to brake disc have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While applying brakes vehicle hestitates and pulsates in front. Consumer stated that the brakes were fixed once, but still the vehicle and the steering wheel shakes.
Consumer has replaced brakes twice; first time 2 years ago. Brakes needed to be replaced again. 2 months ago, brakes were replaced. Vehicle vibrate when the brakes applied. Mechanic was saying that front brakes were warped.
What a lemon! we are averaging $2000/year in repairs. Power windows that stop working, water pump breaks, brake rotors need replacing before brakes wear out, leaking differential, transmission, and now we're told by dealer service department we need a new transfer case. Whoever designed/built/sold this vehicle doesn't have much pride in their workmanship.
I have done some limited research and have found that daimar-Chrysler has isued a technical service bulletin for this problem. I feel this is a major safety problem since it involves the brakes and the rotors are warping for no apparent reason. If the metal in the rotors cannot handle the heat and warp, what effect does this have on the molecular structure of the rotor? will it break apart next time? their fix for the problem is to "turn" or grind the rotors. Sure fixes problem for a period of time. This is second time in about 10,000 miles. Thanks!.
I had a pulsation/roughness when braking. The front rotors were found to have two to four 1/2 to 1 inch cracks coming from the center hub holes. If these cracks went undetected, it would of caused a serious accident. The dealership and daimlerchrysler are stating the reason why I'm having the problems is because of my first brake job, done only about 10,000 miles ago. They said that non-mopar pads (wagner) were used. My mechanic checked the pads, which are still like new, and found nothing wrong. I have had 5 cherokees to date and my mechanic has always used wagner and has had no problems. In doing research on 1999 jgc rotors, there have been many complaints on these rotors. Even in pass years they have had recalls for rotors on jgc. There was a recall for rotors on 96-98 jgc, vehicles made 7/95-10/98. My 1999 jgc was manufactured in 11/98, which is only one month different from the recall. Couid these be the same rotors? it has been even noted on TSB with 1999 Jeeps that there have been brake/rotor problems. I think there should be a recall on these rotors because of the safety issue and the many noted complaints that have been received. I think they are using inferior metal for these rotors.
Severe vibration during high speed braking due to warped rotors. Front rotors and pads replaced.
Front end shutters out of control during normal braking at 40+ mph.
Rotars and brake pads have been a consistent problem, every few months. Rotars and brake pads have been replaced, refaced, and resurface on several occasions and the problem continues. The problem causes an extreme vibration at higher speeds in the steering column and is a concern because this is our family vehicle. I have three children that I transport everyday to school, sports and other activities. I have spent a lot of time arguing with representatives from Chrysler as well as the dealership in order to resolve this ongoing problem and have spent a lot of time with no vehicle due to the vehicle being in the shop. I am concerned about the safety of myself, my family and those drivers around me that the brake system may fail in the future. Chrysler encourages my family by stating that this will not occur, however I am unconvinced that a problem with the brakes is not a reason to be alarmed.
Vehicle vibrates when applying brakes between 40-50 mph. Dealer notified. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
Rotors need replaced again. They say its my driving habits. Rotors should not have to be replaced at 12,000 mile incriments at owners expense. There has to be a problem with the way the vehicle was built. I have owned other cars and never replaced my rotors. The rotors were replaced in January 2000 at 12,500 mile. The dealership in michigan replaced at no cost to me. Now that I am in oklahoma, it is doing the same thing and eddie cordes dealership said I am the cause for the need of replacement. I do not think rotors should need replacement in only nine months from previouse replacement. Chrysler corporation told me to have them look at it again but most likley I will have to pay for them because brake and rotor warranties are only good for 12,000 mile or 1 year from purchase. Please investigate!.
Jeep/Chrysler is not responsive to the problems with these vehicles. The brakes are dangerous and cause so much vibration in the brake pedal and steering wheel that driver control is adversely affected.
Extreme vibration when braking at 45+ mph. Rotors resurfaced 2 times. Recall for similar problem for '97-98 Jeeps. Dealership & damilerchrysler refuse to admit there is a problem despite TSB. . Read more...
When driving and upon depressing brake pedal to make a gradual stop, consumer notice vibration in steering wheel, causing poor vehicle control. Consumer has contacted dealer, dealer noticed brake pads and rotors needed replacing.
Front brake rotors warped and required replacement after 20k miles. This defect causes a dangerous steering shimmy when braking and impares vehicle control.
Front end shimmy, steering wheel pulsates when braking at45+ mph. Told rotors heat up and warp causing front end shake. At 23080miles front pads and rotors replaced by dealer. At 33000 miles front pads replaced rotors turned. At 34000 shimmy continues, dealer deems no repair necessary. Bought new tires, had alignment before research showed many others with same problem. I drive emergency vehicles at a high rate of speed for a living, and my personal vehicle makes me nervous to operate. This is definitly a safety and manufacturer problem.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Steering hard to control when braking dueto front wheel shimmy.
Rotors and pads supposedly replaced by dealer at 11k miles rotors warped again at 30k they said Chrysler wont pay took Jeep to my own mechanic who replaced front rotors and said it didnt look like they had replaced the rotors but recut them I rechecked my invoice from dealer says replaced per service bulletin, called Chrysler they say they reported they were just resurfaced. A recall needs to be done on this this is crazy that so many Jeeps are having the exact same problem I didnt want any more inferior mopar junk put on my car.
While driving at speed at above 40 mph consumer applies brakes, and there is pulsation and vibration. Dealership has looked at vehicle 5 times, and has not been able to tell consumer reason for defect. Please provide any additional information/attachments.
Brake rotors became warped to the point the vehicle bounced when braking. Dealer declined to replace rotors, how ever agreed to machine them per TSB. Dealer service confirmed this was a proplem on some 1999jeeps. My concern is, although they did the work under warranty,I will have to replace the rotors sometime in the future, because they did not.
Three sets of front rotors and three sets of brake pads were replaced within 35,000 miles of wear by dealer but, problem was reoccurring. Consumer states when the rotors warp the vehicle vibrates when the brakes are being applied.
Car would shimmy when braking - brakes had to be grounded & was told this was common with the 1999 Jeep. Salesman didn't know anything about this problem. Brakes were ground down to prevent additional warping.
Jeep lemon!!! terrible vehicle, terrible company!! this vehicle should be recalled immediately for these two issues, among others! I have almost rearended someone, by lookingback to see if I was rear ended due to the hard shift. The brakes shake so much under braking that I did rear end someone, however there was no noticable damage to either vehicle.
A severe shimmy(more at high speed and less at low speed) would occur when brakes are applied. Vehicle been in dealer shop on two occasions, and problem still reoccurring. Feel free to provide any further information.
Brakes pulsating with tremendous vibration going up throught steering wheel when brakes applied 50mph or above at 8800 miles. Very dangerous when unexpectedly encountered on highway first time. Rotors reportedly warper. Replaced by dealer. Problem arouse again at 22114 miles.
During application of brake system while traveling at highway speed there is a severe vibration in vehicle. 1) 05-Apr-2000 at 14,459 miles, brake rotors were resurfaced by dealership. 2) xx-Aug-2000 at 21,408 miles, front brake rotors resurfaced, and rear rotors replaced. 3) 07-Mar-2001 at 30,871 miles, front brake rotors were replaced, and rear brake rotors were resurfaced with new brake pads installed. 4) xx-Dec-2001 at 41,000 miles, front brake rotors were resurfaced, and rear brake rotors are replaced. Service by the dealership has failed to effectively remedy the problem. Please provide any additional information / documentation.
There is shaking in front end of vehicle when applying brakes. Contacted dealer. The first time this occurred the rotors were turned. The second and third time they were replaced. The last time consumer replaced with after market non Jeep rotors.
When appyling brakes extreme vibrations occurs within front wheels due to pads / rotors and calipers prematurely wearing out, cause unknown. Dealer has replaced warped rotors and brakes several times, consumer has even had recall work done on rotors which is not resolving problem. Door panel warped and splitting at bottom, dealer replaced. Vehicle hard to start in the morning time, dealer replaced faulty fuel pump.
On three occasions, I have had very noticable vibration of the steering wheel, when braking at highway speeds(50-60mph). The 1st time was 30aug2000. The correction made was to cut the front brake rotors. The 2nd time was 12dec2000, at 36,242mi. The correction made was to resurface the front brake rotors. The 3rd time I had to have service was 16mar2001 at 41,560mi. The correction made was to have the front brake rotors resurfaced. The service reps. Have told me, several times, that this is a common occurance. The cause, as best I can remember, is the size of the brake rotors versus (I believe) the brake shoes. I have talked to one other person, who stated stated his wife Grand Cherokee, has the same problem. So far there has been no recall, on this problem. So far, other than the steering wheel vibrating(at high speeds) when braking, I have not had it cause further problems. I hope that it does not, but wanted to contact your agency, to see what, if anything can be done, to remedy the problem. Thankyou for your assistance.
When applying brakes vehicle shakes so badly that it causes steering wheel to vibrate. Front in vibration. Consumer has taken it to a dealer twice, and was told all it needed was an adjustment. But, within 2 weeks it was shaking again.
Vehicle would vibrate severely when applying brakes at 35-40 mph, and more severely at higher speeds. Vehicle has been to the dealer on eleven occasions, and the problem has reoccurring. The engine makes noise. There was a clunk noise from drive line to reverse. The vehicle would not hold in park. Consumer stated that both inner and outer tie rod failed and were replaced. While driving at 85 mph the vehicle makes a growling noise. Transmission makes clunking noise when putting in gear. The steering wheel vibrates while going over pumps due to front brake rotors failure, also the steering shock was replaced.
When braking steering wheel shakes, and wheel pulls to the drivers side, also consumer hears a squealing noise.
First, brake related problems: mileage 2341 complaint pulsatting when stopping 20-55 mph , front brake rotors were resurfaced , complaint 2 mileage 16040 brakes pulsatting when stopping also shimmy in steering 45-55 mph, front brake rotors were replaced reason warpage due to overheating design flaw? / complaint 3 mileage 17000, brakes pulsatting , vibaration in vehicle and steering wheel shimmy when brake are applied. Have not rportedto dealer at this time will schedule for week of 07/16/01. Secondly, transmission shift problems: started when vehicle was brand new when stopping it felt like someone was hitting you in the rear end. First repair ,mileage 4428 consisted of tsb0300799 and replacement of rear driveshaft, also rear axle carrier and pinion bearings were replaced. Second transmission repair mileage 10453 due to harsh shiffting @ 20 mph and again when stopping it felt like someone ran into the rear of the vehicle, this time the transmission yoke was replaced and another transmission update per tsb21-09-00,also during this service the front driveshaft was replaced due to a howling noise which started around 55-60 mph, complaint three mileage 10818 vehicle still has whining noise coming from drive train. In addittion, transmission problems continue with harsh shifting at times at 20 mph and 50-55mph,these shift points worsen as other problems were being corrected, dealer claims that thhis is adaptive memory and their nothing that will be done to correct it. According to casey Jeep service manager daimlerchrysler does not see this as a problem only an issue. Fourth complaint mileage 16040 transmission continues to shift hard at times @ 20 mph and 50-55 mph. At this time dealer show no concern in correcting this problem . In summary, brake and drive train problems with this vehicle starting at 2341 miles, and they continue be on-going. I now question the safety of this vehicle.
Took delivery new 3/11/1999. On 2/10/200, @ 5400 miles, dealer performed sb 05-002-99, which I think was turning the front rotors. On 9/30/2000, @10,382 miles, dealer performed sb 05-01-00, front rotor and pad replacement. On 7/2/2001, @ 14,768 miles, dealer turned front rotors. On 2/7/2002, @ 20,804 miles, dealer replaced front rotors. Every 5000 miles, the front rotors have developed unacceptable lateral runout. This vehicle is still on its original tires (and they look pretty good), but its third set of front brake rotors. Dealer reports Chrysler rep says this is the last "good will" brake repair on my vehicle. This is a design problem. It is a safety issue.
Front brake rotors replaced 2 times and now in need of replacement again as steering wheel and front end vibrate with braking at speeds in excess of 45 mph. Called Chrysler customer service and spoke to representative ( michael farrow) on 09/13/2000 about problem after second failure. He stated " I do not have anything in front of me to indicate a problem with the brake system on that vehicle". There have been several technical service bulletins for the brakes and I suspect at least one of these had been issued when he made that comment. He stated that it might be related to my driving habits and was not a defect with the automobile. The service manager at the dealership told me after fixing the problem the first time at 5311 miles that he hoped I wouldn't be back for this same problem but he knew I would since they have had many problems with the front brake rotors on the 1999 Jeeps.
