70 problems related to brake electric antilock have been reported for the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Loss of brakes. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor.
While driving over 50mph and applying brakes steering wheel will rock side to side vibrating heavily, and it will be hard for the consumer to control vehicle. Dealer notified.
While traveling down a mountain road, gaining speed, put car into 2nd gear in order to slow down and not over-use the brakes. . . Car suddenly bolted back and brakes locked up and became unresponsive. I steered out of hitting the median , (it was a windy mountain road), but hit the back of a tractor trailor. . I was then hit from behind by another tractor-trailor and projected fowared. I was able to manuever over to shoulder of road. Placed car's transmission in park. . But it continued to move foward !!! I had minor aches and pains, car sustained at least $9500 worth of collission damage. Told repair to check brakes and transmission. . . They said everything ok. . I did not do anything unusual in this driving experience. I am extremely fearful of the vehicle. It is still in shop waiting for final estimate. I want to make sure the frame and brakes and transmission are ok before I consider using vehicle again. My confidence is lost. Can Jeep respond and let me know why this happened. . . Will they buy-back ? it is on extended warranty til January 2003 or 43,000 miles. I just purchased in January of 2002. I now realize many Jeeps have many problems.
My Jeep Grand Cherokee had the brakes & rotors changed at 22,000 miles through a recall. Now, at 55,000 miles they both need to be done again. This does not seem like typical wear and tear as I have never had to replace brakes and rotors after such a short distance. Dealership blames it on driving techniques, but like I said, I have never had to do this with any other vehicles I have owned.
When brakes are applied while driving 55mph or more vehicle vibrates severely. Dealer has been notified. Feel free to provide any further information on this matter.
While driving about 55 mph could step on brake pedal and steering wheel will start vibrating in an uncontrolable way. Consumer had taken vehicle to dealer more than four times for same brake problem. Dealer had repaired and rotated rotors, but this had not solved the situation. Please provide more information.
Front and rear brake rotors had to be replaced twice with 43000 miles on vehicle. Vehicle was not stopping within the distance it should stop. Contacted dealer.
The brakes pulsate dramatically whe applying brakes steadily above 50mph. This started at 23,000 miles, reported at 30,000 miles-no work done, reported again at 32,000 miles, refaced both front rotors-warped. Reported same pulsating at over 50 mph 37,748 miles-refaced both front rotors. In checking your web site there are dozens of complaints along these same lines, abnormal vibrations/ pulsating from brakes when braking over 50mph. This condition is either faulty materials and/or bad engineering. If not corrected by mfg. Serious accidents will result which could have been avoided. Chrysler is aware of these complaints and knows that this repeated problem is not within the normal, acceptable range of performance, but they try to deny they have a serious problem which needs correcting.
Brake rotors prematurely warped. Braking at high speeds cuases significant steering wheel shimmying. Brakes squeal and vehicle shudders when brakes applied at lower speeds.
Brakes have been a problem for the past 8 months but was told that I may not be driving Jeep "properly". The brakes would squeak, steering would shudder, occasionally brake would lose pressure at a stop & the sound of metal on metal heard. Brakes were checked with no reported problem. I had to replace brakes & rotors as it was difficult to control the vehicle &another incident of brakes going to floor at a stop sign. Dealer said its normal for brakes/rotors to be replaced at this time(it's poor quality materials in rotors in my opinion) & since they can't reproduce the brake problem, there is no problem.
The front end of the car vibrate during slow down and pressing of the brakes.
Repeated attempts to remedy this system have failed. It's a lemon! no safety defect listed.
Vehicle vibrates when applying brakes between 40-50 mph. Dealer notified. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
I contacted NHTSA last week. Update: I received a technical service bullitin #05-01-00 rev a dated 14 April 00. Under discussion the bullitin states, " a new brake pad repair kit has been released which contains an adhesive backing. This will provide for a more positive release of the brake pad when the brake pedal is released. This, in turn will move the pad away from the rotor, resulting in less friction and wear, which resulted from the pad resting on the rotor when brakes were not applied. " the bullitin goes into the repair and then goes into the policy. The policy is "reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty" remember, I had the brakes and rotors changed in Jan 2000. Nine months later I need to repair them again but I have to pay for the repairs. Reading this bulletin makes it obvious that chryselor knows that they are at fault but are placing the cost to the customer. Totally unfair! this could be a safety issue. If you read the bulletin it states that the Jeep will vibrate at the steering wheel and seat. This could cause a person to panic at a high rate of speed. Please put me on the list of comlainers about this problem and let me know what chryslers position is with this problem. Chrysler does not want to give me any explanation except "sorry if you feel this way". Thank you! sfc dudzik.
While driving would step on the brakes and steering wheel vibrated over 20 mph. Dealer told consumer that rotors had to be replaced.
With braking from 65 to 50 mph, there is a severe steering wheel vibration. It stops and doesn't occur at speeds less than 50 mph. It also does not occur when braking at higher speeds. The onset was insideous, with no known initiating vehicle damage. It has progressively worsened. When contacted, the dealership service department was not concerned, and believed it to be not an urgent or emergent problem. I know of 2 other 1999 Grand Cherokee owners now with the same complaint. Is this a potential safety hazard?.
While driving stepped on brakes and they made noise, like metal to metal grinding. Front brake rotors were corroded. Manufacturer sent a recall notice, but dealer did not take care of it.

Have sent a detailed letter to dealer and to NHTSA. No safety defect listed.
This truck is a lemon, I will never buy american again. The Jeep is unsafe rotors warp and cause severe control problems while braking. I will be starting a new web page to get the word out about this unsafe vehicle and return to the faithful Nissan family and purchase a pathfinder.
A severe shimmy(more at high speed and less at low speed) would occur when brakes are applied. Vehicle been in dealer shop on two occasions, and problem still reoccurring. Feel free to provide any further information.
When braking at high speedsjeep wobbles on front right side. Jeep was taken to dealership on August 4, 1999. There, the rotors were either turned/ grinded. Please provide any furhter information.
Extreme pulsation in front brakes. Rotors have been cut once, replaced at 30,000 miles, and now doing it again.
When braking steering wheel shakes, and wheel pulls to the drivers side, also consumer hears a squealing noise.
Brakes vibrating and pulsating with a slight pull to side.

Every 10 thousand miles rotors warp, causing abs brakes not to function. Had them replaced 3 times; but, problem still occurs.
I experienced severe brake vibration when braking casually at hwy speeds. This made it difficult to hold the steering wheel steady and hold control on the road. Dealer said rotors need turning- at 8000 miles? problem reoccured 6 mnths later at 15000 miles-had a broad blade lathe cut at a different dealer. First dealer wanted to charge me and then said they did not have right equipment to fix it. Problem reoccured again at 19000 miles. Had rotors and hubs replaced. Had to fight to get warranty to fix it. Hope this works this time. When brakes vibrate it feels unsafe.
While driving at 25 mph consumer put on brakes, and car would not stop. It just slid/slid and slid. Consumer hit another vehicle and car came to a stop. Road was wet.
While traveling down the highway at appox. 65 mph I began to apply the brakes, the entire vehicle and steering wheel shook violently. This came without warning, after a few gentle pushes on the brake in the next few miles the shudder was less violent. It now feels as if the rotors are warped, I had the rotors turned at 6500 miles and now it seems as they are warped again. In recent days I have been careful to note the vehicles behavior, it seems that after 5-6 stoplights or braking periods in quick succession that the next few stops are especially violent, and then a few stops later it goes away. The violent shaking is strong enough to cause problems at highway speeds, I am now confined to <45 mph until the vehicle is inspected next week.
Been to the dealer 6 times for the brakes. When braking from 60 mph+, the truck shakes violently. Repairs last 3,000 miles, then it returns. I have filed a complaint with daimlerchrysler. I will file a law suit if this truck is not replaced, it seems very dangerous.
Rotors turned, brakes replaced once, chronic problem, not corrected, dealer blames my driving - no way- problem never fixed, brakes grab and wobble, steering wheel shakes, reoccurs.

When driver pressed on the brakes vehicle bounced. Likewise, rotors needed to be changed, also, transmission has been humming within the first 5000 miles. Dealer said transmission needed to be replaced, but they didn't replace it. They just replaced some of the parts.
