1 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 35 mph, smoke was present underneath the hood. When the contact stopped the vehicle in order to inspect it fire was under his feet, under the hood and the entire under carriage of the vehicle. The contact was able to remove a child passenger from the vehicle without any injuries. The fire department arrived to assist with extinguishing the fire. An investigator with the manufacturer took pictures of the vehicle three weeks ago and the contact had not received a follow up call. The insurance company provided the contact with a copy of the recall notice and stated that they were unable to assist him since the failure was mechanical. The contact stated that the vehicle was not completely destroyed but it was severely damaged. There were no warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. Case # 20554289 was filed with the manufacturer. The manufacturer did not confirm if his VIN was a part of NHTSA recall 05v396000, power train automatic transmission although the failure was identical. The failure mileage was 115,000.

2 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2010

Rubber/plastic piece that rides along when shifting became bunched up and couldn't shift into park or drive. Had to cut out the bunched up piece as car was in middle of road. This rubber/plastic piece is part of the shifter bezel trim that keeps dust and dirt from getting into the shifter area. Nothing has been done as dealer wants $720. 00 for the part plus labor!!??!!?? this is ludicrous!!!!!!.

3 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2008

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo, 3. 7l engine, automatic transmission. When driving, the vehicle will just shut off as if the key was turned off, losing all power. The vehicle will start afterwards and the check engine light will stay on for a few hours this has been going on for a couple years. This problem is similar to the recall on the 2008 Grand Cherokee stalling and I think this problem is more wide spread than Chrysler wants to admit. I have an appointment with a Jeep dealer who recently relocated in my area next week.

4 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number 05v396000 (power train:automatic transmission). The vehicle was taken to the dealer to have the recall repair performed. A few months later, the failure recurred. When the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, they discovered that only part of the recall work was done. The dealer and the manufacturer are refusing to perform the recall repair because the contact is the third owner of the vehicle. The failure mileage was 67,000.

5 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2007

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee purchased used with full warranty. 30,000 miles the transmission goes. Took to local dealership for repairs and was treated like dirt. They say they rebuilt the transmission but problem still exists. Clanking, banging, and not shifting at all apparently this is normal for Chrysler vehicles because the dealer says there is nothing wrong with it. Surprise now that the warranty is up I wonder if they'll figure out what is wrong. Disgusted with Jeep, Chrysler will never own another!!!.

6 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2007

The 2005 Jeep cherokee has severe problems related to the transmission. I bought this vehicle used with 10,000 miles on. I had 5 transmission related problems within 12 months. Two of these problems left the vehicle inoperable; one of which the vehicle almost caught on fire. They replaced the transmission and I was still not happy. I traded in for a 2007 Buick lucerne - which has been a great car. No more Chrysler products for me!.

7 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2007

Placed car in park with drivers door open and key in ignition (turned off). Car slipt into reverse and rolled backward. Tried to stop car from rolling and got pinned between car door and frame of garage door. Car door bent backward and was severely damaged. Garage door frame bent from weight of car. Owners lower back was injured from being pressed between car door and frame.

8 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2007

I had a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited with approximately 24,000 miles on it. In December 2006 it down shifted itself into low gear while doing a forward speed of approximately 10 mph. I took the car to the local Jeep dealer who after keeping it for the day told me that they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle. On February 9, 2007 with approximately 27,500 miles on the same vehicle it did the same thing again only this time at a speed of approximately 20 to 25 mph. The vehicle was basically uncontrollable. I took the car back to the dealer who told me once again that there was nothing wrong with the transmission and, in writing, told me to change my driving habits. They assumed I was down shifting the car by mistake. I had so little confidence in the vehicle that I traded it in on a new car. If this should happen at highway speed and the vehicle slips sideways it will roll over.

9 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2006

The vehicle is a 6 cylinder with a nag 1 transmission, 30000 miles, transmission surges and does not want to change gears while accelerating. Dangerous on highway. . . Cannot pick up speed had been shuddering at various times. Vehicle does not seem to know how to shift properly and hesitates when accelerating or pulling in to traffic check engine ligth come on every Friday and come off on saturdays. I took the car to dealer 5 times and every time they have a new upgrade for the computers but no fix, is a safety isue!!!!.

10 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2006

: the contact stated that while driving 55 mph on the highway the vehicle started to decelerate. This issue was intermittent. The independent repair shop was unable to determine the cause of the problem a week prior to the failure all of the symbols on the panel started to blink.

11 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2006

I have a 2005 Jeep cherokee with 3,000 miles. I took it in for a transmission seal recall, e13. Two days after it was serviced, I was on the highway and the transmission burned up, leaving me stranded. Car had to be towed 150 miles to dealer who handled recall. My car has been in the shop a month. I am having to pay daily car rental which has now cost me over $1,200 in addition to having to make a car payment for a car I don't have. I keep getting different answers from dealer, said transmission ordered days ago from new jersey, now says it was ordered yesterday, July 14, he says he can't tell me anything, when, if it is new or rebuilt, or how much longer I have to wait. I have never been treated so rudely by a dealership, manager, and service manager. I will never purchase a vehicle from that dealer again and I am inclined to never buy another Jeep product. I am at the point of turning the car back and seeking legal action if something isn't done about this outrageous situation.

12 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2006

Jeep 2005 Grand Cherokee. On several occasions, attempted to accelerate onto highway from 40 mph and engine just revs, tachs to 5 or 6 and still only going 40 mph in the meantime numerous close calls to getting hit by oncoming cars and trucks on highway because the Jeep simply isn't moving fast and just revving. Taken to dealer for complaint and repair at least 3-4 times and dealer states they can't "duplicate" the problem so "they are unable to fix it". I am told "nothing is wrong". I fear somebody will eventually get severely injured or killed due to this problem. Stuck in a lease of an unsafe vehicle.

13 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2006

I bought a brand new 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo, within weeks I started to notice the upholstery was not treated, it would stain with the slightest bit of condensation or rain. After about 8-12 months I started to feel it getting sluggish when accelerated but the problem was intermittent. Brought it in to dealership and they said no problem was detected. The real problems started after I had the vehicle 2yrs. . Check engine light would come on, gears would stick, engine would roar up to 4. 5 rpms and would not accelerate. This would happen in rush hour traffic, on ramps to the higway, green lights etc. . I almost got creamed by an 18 wheeler. The vehicle would buck and sputter. If I kept my foot on the gas it would eventually clunk into gear. It had been to the dealership 6 times. At one point they replaced they transmission module. . That did not fix the problem. It started to get tiresome, dealership was condenscending claiming "they could not duplicate the problem. " no luck with gm's ,serv mgrs, and the Chrysler corp. Chysler does not honor their warranties or care about their customers. I feared for my life in the vehicle and just traded it in, upside down, yesterday. I had no fight left in me. This was the worst experience you could imagine buying a brand new SUV. Something needs to be done before someone is fatally injured.

14 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2006

I was driving down the road to go play golf when I noticed an odd sound from the rear end of my 2005 grand limited w/hemi. On the way home I noticed the sound was in all gears and all speeds but much more notable at low speeds. I drove it to the dealership as soon as possible and took a mechanic for a ride and he thought the noise was a bad pinion bearing. After closer inspection they determined the whole rear end of the car needed to be rebuild. 15,000 miles and I need a new rear end? for a $42,000 SUV this sure is not what I expected. So now I am out of my car for a week to two weeks while they get the parts and rebuild. So now I have a new "rebuilt" SUV for the same payments. . . Doesn't seem right at 15,000 miles. Rkm.

15 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2006

: the contact stated in April 2006, the vehicle accelerated on its own nearly causing an accident. The service dealer determined the computer system that runs the transmission was the problem. The computer issue allowed the transmission to leak improperly. Also, in October 2006 the vehicle stalled at 30 mph due to all the electric in the vehicle failing.

16 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2006

: the contact stated while driving 40 mph the engine stalled. While using the air conditioner or defroster water leaked into the transmission causing it to fail. There is a NHTSA recall, #05v396000 concerning the power train automatic transmission however the recall did not correct the problem. The dealer was alerted and the transmission was replaced which remedied the problem.

17 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2006

: the contact stated while driving at various speeds the vehicle surged forward without warning. The rpms increased very rapidly. Upon inspection the dealership determined there was a problem with the electrical system and the transmission. The dealer replaced multiple parts in an attempt to remedy the problem however, the surging problem continued.

18 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2006

I have a 2005 Jeep cherokee with a v8 engine that was not included in the recall. My car sat for 5 days while I was on vacation. Upon returning the battery was completely dead, I had the battery jumped and drove home from airport. The battery was dead again the next morning, vehicle was towed to dealership. After replacing the battery and an oil change, the vehicle began stalling when stopped at red lights or stop signs. The vehicle was also lunging forward when stopped. I have had the vehicle at the dealership four times for this problem and have gotten the same response "road tested- normal condition at this time". The service rep even called me to tell me he drove the vehicle and thought it was the transmission, that there is a hesitating shift and a jerks hard forward on acceleration. However they were unable to find anything wrong. Vehicle has 9,000 miles.

19 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2006

We leased a 2005 Jeep cherokee in January 2005 and in January 2006 everything on the dashboard started to cut off including turn signals, odometer. . . And everything on the dash including the cd player, the buttons for the heater/ac would overheat and the car began to smoke for no apparent reason. We took it in to galeana, the local dealership and they could not find a problem, which apparently seems to happen quite often with chyrsler automobiles. Shortly after the car began to break down everywhere. If I parked the car at a store, work, home. . . And went back to start it, it would not crank. This happens 8 out of 10 times and the vehicle has been taken to the dealership 5 times and they could not "duplicate" a problem and now they tell me they can't do anything for me. Shortly after that at the end of 2006, as I was driving down the highway a "pebble" as the dealership calls it, went through my grill and hit the transmission coolant, spraying transmission fluid everywhere almost catching on fire with me and my two small children in it. We took it to the dealership and apparently the transmission was blown out, $4,000 dollars to replace. All of our other problems still exists and Chrysler does not want to fix the problems or let us out of the lease. I have tried talking to Chrysler and getting this issue resolved only to hear them telling me that this was not their problem. This is becoming a trend in their business and if they cannot fix the vehicles they manufactured they should not be making the vehicles in the first place.

20 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2005

The automatic transmission of my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee ,began acting unusual in mid November 2005. The transmission would clunk when put into drive , the vehicle seemed to hesitate before moving, also on 2 occasions the vehicle would down shift to first gear and then back to drive on its own while in motion. On December 18, 2005 I told the Jeep dealer service manger of the problem when I took the vehicle in , I had received from daimler-Chrysler a recall notice concerning the transmission , as far as I know the dealership performed the recall repair. The vehicle seemed fine until December 30, 2005 when while traveling on the expressway at 55 miles per hour with the cruise control engaged the vehicle again downshifted to first gear momentarily , all the warning lights came on then shifted back to drive the engine revved up and speed up unexpectedly . I then lost control of the vehicle spinning out and hitting the concrete divider wall of the expressway. The vehicle sustained over $10,000 in damage, luckily there were no injuries to me or my passenger. I have notified Chrysler and my insurance company of problem, at this point I have not authorized any collision repairs to this vehicle. Chrysler said they would inspect the vehicle, I await to see what they will do. I don't intend to repair or drive this vehicle again or any Jeep cherokee ,for that matter as to its unsafe transmission .

21 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2005

This is a safety issue regarding the recent recall of the 2005 Jeep with transmission problems. Because of the transmission problems our Jeep stopped dead while we were going 65 miles an hour on the new jersey turnpike. Luckily we were not killed. We had it towed over 100 miles to our dealer on long island (east hills Chrysler Jeep) to have it fixed. They swore they fixed it a few days later, only for this to happen to us again a month later. We towed it again to our Jeep dealer and shortly after we were told, this time it was really fixed. For the third time, a month later, it happened again. After avoiding being killed 3 times, we do not trust they know how to fix this recall. It is a leased Jeep and all we want is to be let out of the lease and they refuse. They swear now it is really fixed. Did they lie the other 2 times? I am afraid to drive this car or let anyone I love in the car, as well as possibly endanger anyone driving near us. I think this is a huge safety issue that needs to be addressed for the rest of the recalled Jeeps, but for us, we just want a different car. This dealer's service department obviously doesn't know how to fix it and this should be investigated. Also, we contacted daimler chryslerã‚s customer service department numerous times. We were listened to sympathetically but nothing was ever done about it. Update: I decided to wait to see if our Jeep dealership would do the right thing before I sent this in, but they refused and made us pick it up after they claimed it was yet again really fixed for the third time. A few days later, on December 11th, it broke down again. The car was towed back to them - the 4th time it has broken down from this same problem. Now they are saying there is nothing wrong with the car. This service department does not know what it is talking about. They refuse to do the right thing for us but more importantly, they do not know how to fix a nationally recalled problem.

22 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2005

3. 7 l Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo with 9,000 miles. First major trip we have (about 500 miles away from home), our vehicle stalled. There was fire under the hood, it's good that the SUV stalled in front of the service center or there could be an explosion. We just purchased this vehicle in less than 6 mos. The service center told us that it will take about 2 weeks till we could get our Jeep back and it's already 17 days; I made a follow-up and was told that they haven't received the transmission that they've ordered. The service center have us rent a car. Called Chrysler and we were told that there is only safety concern and our VIN number is not included in the recall. How is that possible when in one web page, we saw 18 similar transmission complaints on the same vehicle? Chrysler won't cover our car rentals and motel.

23 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2005

I continue to have an on-going problem with the transmission of my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3. 7l vehicle. It has been in the shop for (4) four service inspections due to a recurring transmission problem. The transmission will "shudder", "miss", "jump" usually between 3rd, 4th, and/or 5th gears between speeds of 30mph - 40mph. The vehicle received (2) two "computer downloads" to try to correct the problem, but it was unsuccessful. The third service trip resulted in no repair being made, due to the service department being unable to find the type of problem that existed. The fourth trip consisted of the "transmission recall" service being performed, again with no change in the performance of the vehicle. While I continue to have the same problem, I am "at a loss" as to how to have the vehicle repaired.

24 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2005

Consumer complaint regarding recall on transmission fill tube oil seal. The consumer received recall 05v-460000 and contacted the dealer on Nov. 15 to make an appointment to have it repaired. The consumer was disappointed to learn that the next available appointment wasn't until Dec 23. The consumer is concerned about the potential of a fire before the vehicle is repaired.

25 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2005

The contact states there is NHTSA recall campaign 05v396000 concerning automatic transmission. The parts needed to repair the vehicle are not available at the local dealership. He spoke to the manufacturer, who has confirmed the parts were not available.

26 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2005

Contact stated vehicle was towed to the dealership on November 12, 2005 for NHTSA recall campaign 05v396000 concerning the automatic transmission. He contacted the service department numerous times, and t stated it could take another three weeks to repair. He contacted the manufacturer, and they promised to look into the matter and call him back.

27 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2005

Vehicle has transmission issues and began at 641 miles after purchasing brand new. Transmission hesitation, vehicle does not seem to know how to shift properly and hesitates when accelerating or pulling in to traffic. Has caused several near misses when trying to pull in to traffic, pass on the interstate or safely get out of someone's way. Vehicle has had numerous parts replaced not relation directly to this issue. Vehicle has accelerated on its own when approaching a stop light and has tried to lurch forward without my foot on from the accelerator and firmly applied to the brake. Vehicle has been in for this issue on numerous occasions and manufacturer cannot locate issue. Airbag indicator light is supposed to come on to indicate airbag system is disabled when there is not enough weight in the passenger chair. It not only does this, it comes on and stays on with or without passengers in the chair. It triggers the drivers instrument panel light to come and chime repeatedly. This has been in for repair 4 times now and cannot seem to be rectified. I expect more than this from a brand new vehicle and feel I have not been treated fairly by Chrysler when trying to address this issue.

28 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2005

The contact states there is NHTSA recall 05v396000 concerning the automatic transmission. The parts needed to repair the vehicle are not available at the local dealership. He spoke to the manufacturer, who confirmed the parts are not available at this time. Updated 12/07/05.

29 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2005

Received a recall notice to replace the transmission fill tube oil seal over two weeks ago and cannot get the dealership to replace it. The letter states that it is urgent that this be replaced or there could be a fire under the hood of my car. The dealership keeps telling me that they do not have the part to replace it. Why do they not have the part to replace this defective part? I need some help.

30 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2005

2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact rented this vehicle from hertz rental. Therefore he does not have a VIN. The electronic downshift did not work . The contact was on a 10 % down hill decline and the vehicle never shifted into a lower gear, the contact had to ride the brakes down the mountain. The contact did tell hertz about the problem.

31 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2005

On September 29, 2005 at approximately 8:20am I was coming off of a highway exit ramp, when I came to a complete stop. Shortly after coming to that stop, I noticed that my engine began to accelerate (rev) and that the rpm's on the speedometer was on its way down from about 5-6k. Before I had a chance to look back up at the road, my vehicle lunged forward and struck the vehicle in front of me, causing extensive damage to the vehicle in front of me as well as mind. The impact of the collision was so powerful that the vehicle that I struck was pushed into a second vehicle, directly in front of the vehicle I struck. Immediately after the collision my vehicle's engine continued to accelerate (rev), making me shift the vehicle from drive to neutral. Once the vehicle was in neutral, my vehicle stalled out and was completely disabled. Once I restarted my vehicle, I noticed that my vehicle's check engine, throttle ignition and esp (electronic stability program) light/indicator were on. I moved my vehicle from the scene of the accident to a parking lot, about a ã‚â¼ mile down the street and awaited a tow truck, all the while with my vehicle hesitating to accelerate. This is was the third time this has happened. The first time was on 08/17/05, when I came to a complete stop at a highway off ramp, my vehicle lunged forward and then stalled out. Once able to turn on the vehicle, all the above indicator lights came on. I brought it to the dealership and they could not find anything wrong, "we were unable to replicate what you experienced. " they also told me that this could have been a result of "bad gas. " three hours after leaving the dealership (08/18/05) the same thing happened again. I brought the vehicle back to the dealership, again, and this time they told me, "something is wrong, we don't know what, but something is wrong. " eventually, they replaced the vehicle's cpm (computer programming module) and everything seemed great , until 09/22/05 and the accident.

32 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2005

The contact complained about transmission problems on three occasions. The first time the vehicle stalled in traffic, and was towed to the local dealer for repairs. The second time the vehicle stalled, and was returned to the dealer for repairs. The third time the vehicle stalled ,and was again returned to the dealer for repairs. The vehicle has been repaired, but the contact has not picked up the vehicle because he was concerned bout this repair. Like all the other repairs it was only temporary. Prior to the third incident the contact received NHTSA recall campaign 05v396000 concerning the automatic transmission.

33 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2005

Our 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited gets stuck in 3rd gea and will not shift. It has 12,000 miles and has been in the shop 4 times for the same problem. It is very dangerous because the car will not accelerate in an intersetion and cannot move out of the way of traffic on the highway. The local Chrysler service manger in san rafael has told us that he cannot solve the problem and that the Chrysler regional manager has not responed to him or to us. The folks at Chrysler's 800 numer has told us that they cannot help us and referred us to the dealer.

34 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 08/03/2005

This particular 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5. 7l limited consistently stalls and became a safety hazard when it stalled on the drive-way of the house and rolled back into the street. In the process the car's passenger side door hit my wife causing bruises and pain on her right arm.

35 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2005

Purchased vehicle on 7-31-06. Upon test drive the door locks would nt lock or unlock when using door key (any dr in the car). The remote did work. Salesman told us 2 bring it in if it cont'd. Taken in 5 times since the 1st time in October 05', dealerships cannot dupt the issue. Last dealership said that if he toggled switch about 10 times it happened, but that was just "overheating the button & that is normal". Problem is I work in a building w/a prkg garage & work all hrs. When I get into my car, 4 safety I lock the drs immed. There have been several occasions where I can't do that & have 2 wait 2 get the car moving over the 15mi an hour 2 lock the drs. Next issue is the delayed engagement in the transmission going 2 rev or drv. The car has been in on 3 occasions for this item of which the dealership clears codes or cannot dupt the issue. This issue became a an issue in a construction zone at a rr track near our home. Gates were down when I drove up & I was 3rd car back, the gates went up, 2 cars went through & I was almost at the tracks when the railroad arms started coming down again. I put on the brakes & shifted to reverse 2 back up & the delay nearly caused the rr arm 2 hit the car. I backed up just enough to clear the rr arm by less than 6 inches. The last item is the a/c. Since late March of 06' we have been experiencing the a/c blowing cold, then the air turns 2 warm or hot air blowing from 3 sec 2 minutes of blowing humid air before the system will kick in again with cold air. This has been intermittently like the other 2 items above. 3 times into the dealerships & again it was stated they fixed it when it wasn't or "it's 114 degrees out, it is going 2 blow warm air". "using outside air will make the a/c blow warm air'. The incident date is hard since there are 3 issues so I put the day of purchase. The failures are also hard to calculate, but since these items happen intermittently & or everyday (a/c) I counted 3 mo worth.
