general problems of the 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee - part 1

Vehicle will all of a sudden shut off with out warning while driving. It has shut off while in motion going about 25miles per hour . I hurry and put it in park and restart it. It has restarted every time. Sometime the lights on the dash will flash for a moment but has only done that 2 times out of the 10 that it has shut off while driving.

I am experiencing so many problems with my Jeep. It shift out of gear then start shutting down. Lights appear all across the dash board. At times, I have difficulty in shifting gear. The clutch slip and I get this burning smell. Then engine light comes on. It slow to move after shifting it into the forward gear. Sometimes it doesn't move when I shift it into the forward gear. Then when it does, it start bucking and kicking while driving. It slows down even when you press the gas pedal. Lastly, I have major problem with my a/c. It runs cool for a second and then completely shut off.

Transmission not changing gears. Transmission control module issue.

The ignition I believe lost connection with the key fob. Multiple times while driving the vehicle will randomly just die. An when trying to start sometimes it does nothing unless you push key in a certain way.

While driving on the highway the entire car suddenly shut off, on three separate occasions. All the lights lit up on the dashboard then the car would not accelerate. I turned it off when I reached the shoulder, waited about a minute then turned the car on again. I am grateful my daughter and I are still alive. I've had it in the repair shop for a month. They replaced the brake system and dealt with grounding issues but, they cannot figure out why it keeps happening. This is a very serious issue and I see that others have complained about it. Yes, the car is old and has over 175,000 miles on it but I see that this is a common problem so it should be addressed.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 mph and attempting merge into traffic the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights illuminated; however, the vehicle coasted to a stop and all the electrical power had failed. The contact turned the ignition to the off position and waited before restarting the vehicle and the vehicle returned to normal functionality. The contact stated that the electrical failure and the vehicle stalling was intermittent at first, but since become a recurring failure. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the braking system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the stalling and electrical failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 14v438000 (electrical system). The failure mileage was approximately 175,000.

Driving down the road my head lights with flicker on and off and its making the lights inside the Jeep go on and off as well reported this awhile ago as well due to the face that tis is not safe while going down the road sometimes it will shut off on its own while driving and then it will come right back in like nothing happened.

If vehicle sits for more then 8 hours you can drive it - but once the vehicle has been turned off vehicle will not turn on for more then 5-10 seconds and will just turn off. Sometimes it says invalid key when it’s the primary key and not spares. Acts as if it has kill switch. Problem keeps happening constantly.

The vehicle's gauges will turn off while driving randomly. The speedometer, odometer, tachometer, fuel gauge will all zero out for unspecified amounts of time. Sometimes 10 seconds, other times until the vehicle is started back up. This occurs when the vehicle is in motion. So, is very dangerous. Sometimes it causes the car to completely shut off and come back on. While shut off, the car sounds like it is struggling to continue its forward progress. This happens occasionally. Once the car corrects itself, the check engine light appears. After starting the car 2-3 times, the misfire corrects itself. I did a previous report related to the air bag light is on, but not sure if it is related with the same electrical problem.

There wasn’t an accident while driving my vehicle (thank god). My key stopped working for my ignition. I had an ignition recall on my vehicle (as to what the dealership told me). My vehicle has now been with the dealership since around christmas maybe even a little bit before that. They did my ignition recall as to what was wrong with the vehicle. So they say. . It was towed in because it would not turn over. . They gave me a new key and put in a “new ignition” and still would not turn over. The dealership said my key would not flash over with the computer? also, stating I needed a new skim module. Which they stated that Chrysler discontinued that part. I was not offered a rental. . Which is fine I guess. . I’m a single mother of two kids. It has now been about four months about. I have never had in my life had the problems that I do now. My job is about to fire me, completely. The problems that I have had getting my children to and from school and doctor appointments, etc. I’m really at a loss for words. My vehicle had no problem starting before the ignition - key - issue. I really don’t know what else to do.

While driving all dashboard and exterior lighting goes off and engine and brakes seem to be impacted. Possibly an ignition switch failure.

The ignition key switch does not work properly sometime I cannot even start the vehicle and sometimes going down the road the vehicle just cuts off with no warning whatsoever , I just got the vehicle and was not told by the dealership that the vehicle had this problem, had I known I wouldn't have bought it,, are there any recalls on this vehicle about this problem ? it needs to be fixed its very unsafe , thank you.

When putting the vehicle in drive it will light up and say it is in every single gear and runs in a very high gear and will not shift out of that gear.

When driving the dash lights will come on heater stops working making it unsafe.

When the lighting bolt came on my car went limp it almost caused a major wreck on the highway.

Driving at a speed of 60mph - all my instrument panel lights started flashing, the car loss all power and turned itself off. I was able to muscle car to shoulder. Put back in park and 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee drove the rest of the trip (10 miles) with no other issues. Very dangerous situation! thankful there was not much traffic when this occurred.

Have has to replace water pump 4 times for leaking. Replaced 2 power steering pumps. Transmission and slipped and chirped since I bought it. Noticed metal shaving in my oil.

On several occasions the Grand Cherokee has suddenly shut off while driving. The vehicle loses all power, loses power steering and brakes causing an extremely dangerous situation. Dash lights all go out. Upon restart, check engine light stays on but vehicle functions again.

When coming off of the off ramp from the highway, I came to a stop light. Once sitting at the stop light the heater, dash and headlights all went off but the car was still running. All 3 of the mentioned above flickered on and off multiple times before coming back on again and then the check engine light popped up. This is not related to the ignition as my knees are not even close to the key and the key has nothing dangling from it. This is rather dangerous. If I was still driving and it happened, I would not be able to see my speed or the road.

My vehicle cuts off while I'm driving some day's on the highway and handle on the passenger side is broken so I can't get out of truck without putting window down and opening from the outside lift gate glass comes open on it own and it speed and rpm goes up on it own with the car cranked and not being driven.

I was driving my 2006 Grand Cherokee the other night in the rain and I started going down a hill and I hit a little bump and my brakes like locked up in the front and I went to turn into a drive way after it did that and I had no power steering and my battery light came on and this has happened to me now twice in the last few weeks!.

The Jeep dealer replaced my ignition switch that was part of the 2014 ignition switch recall. My Jeep continues to lose power after successfully turning on. It will turn on for a less than one minute, all the lights on the dash board will turn on, and the engine will have sudden loss of power. It can take up to an hour to get it to turn back on without it losing power again. If driven after it turn on without waiting at least 2 minutes, the car will suddenly lose power while in drive. This has been happening on an almost daily basis since 2019, which resulted in it being parked in the driveway for 6 months for fear it would turn off while driving on the freeway.

2006 Jeep models long with other Dodge vehicles re experiencing tipm failure at the fuel pump relay causing the vehicle to stall while driving or not being able to start form being parked.

Fuses keep coming lose and causing abs to go off when you start off to drive and other error msgs to light up. Push back down and its good for a while.

Recently bought our Jeep and have dimming lights due to low idle and also have a problem with starting it. There are times it wont start unless the battery is disconnected and reconnected 5 mins later and that's after shutting the vehicle off after driving it. From what I have read there is an issue with the wire harness from the battery. The low idle is making the lights dim throughout the vehicle and from what I have read on that it needs a system update that can cost roughly 1000 which I dont have. My wife also said while she was driving home that the transmission slipped on her for no apparent reason. She said she pulled over and put it in park and back in gear and then it acted fine.

Dash lights flickering and keeps blowing fuses affecting right side front and rear marker lights (tail light and front marker light right side only) replace the fuse and it may last a day or it may last a few months, I see lots of complaints about flickering and I think it's a short, the fan relay for the heater motor kept blowing and after replacing it twice and the blower motor once I found that the problem was in the connector harness (bad solder job at the connector) burnt so bad I'm surprised it didn't catch fire!! in motion and parked.

The vehicle starts up great no issues, then within 5 seconds cuts it's self off. No sputtering or choking, it's not stalling, the computer is turning the vehicle off. This happens at least 1 out of 3 times starting it and sometimes if you keep starting it it will eventually stay in, but other times it leaves you stranded. There are 100s of other people reporting the same issue but Jeep refuses to acknowledge there is an issue. They have replaced the pcm (over $2,000) repair and now want to replace 2 components feeding into the pcm bc the issue persists but won't guarantee the fix. I believe me and others deserve to have Jeep acknowledge this is an electrical issue with their Jeeps, that leaves their drivers stranded and vulnerable.

I have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee srt8 about two weeks ago I was leaving a store at night when I started the Jeep the indicator light for my bright lights was on I tried to turn them off nothing happened they were stuck on then I realized I had no turn signals either. When I went inside the store the brights were not on and everything was working fine. I went ahead and drove home without turn signals and my bright lights stuck on about 10 min into my drive everything started working again. Then about a week ago and I turned left to enter a highway everything inside the Jeep went black I lost all interior power gauges, instrument panel, radio, ac, lights and fans the Jeep stuttered but kept running when this happened everything came back about a minute later. Just now when I was taking a left turn it happened again everything inside the Jeep died again and came back on about a minute later. I have already had my ignition recall done also since the recall was done half the time when I try to start the Jeep it will just make a clicking sound and I have to turn it over a few times and hold the key in the start position until it will finally start.

Takata recall, the vehicle lights on dashboard, headlights and the air conditioner stop working and gauges also cannot see anything or read speed limit, gas gauge goes all the way down while driving on highway! the light also flicker on and off and all light symbols appear on, and then only lights on esp bas light! I am afraid because of all potential dangers of have. No lights on can have, I drive the car with my 3 children and would hate for anything to happen while driving because of this issue. The flickering also happens while driving on the street, am afraid of getting pulled over because my lights are flashing on and off behind them.

After purchasing this car pre-owned in 2008 we began having issues with the transmission shifting. After bringing back into dealership for diagnostic testing, they found nothing. This went on for a period of two years, with them even keeping the car over a period of time. Still nothing on the diagnostics. Throughout the years we would notice a strong downshift when coming to stops and a "chug" when shifting out of low gears. Fast forward to 2018. The Jeep finally quit shifting out of first gear. . . The rpms would race up and the car just wouldn't sift even when using shifter stick manually to the + or -. Brought to local mechanic. Did diagnostics. Found shifter was broken and replaced and reset. A few days went by and it started happening again. Mechanic said that rear wheel sensor had gone bad and was throwing of computer brain of car, so we had him replace that. All was great. Husband takes car on short trip and while passing a car in the left lane on interstate 10 it once aging chugs down hard and he loses gears. . . Has to pull over on side of interstate, shut off car and restart to get it to shift again. Bottom line is there has to be a long standing issue with drive/power train & electrical/computer brain!!! we have kept this car in great working order, regularly changing fluids and maintenancing. There is no reason this care should be behaving in this manner @ 12 years old, regularly maintained unless there is an outstanding issue with 2006 Jeeps. It has to be an overall problem and after reading many of the complaints we believe this warrants an investigation and defintely a recall!!! all of the above issues happened in both city street and highway situations and while the vehicle was in motion.

Takata recall sensor goes off while driving and no air bag deployment.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that there was a progressing failure with the vehicle randomly stalling with no warning. The dealer (len stoler Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep, 1001 baltimore blvd, westminster, MD 21157, (410) 876-8800) replaced a part associated with the ignition which had took longer than 6 to 8 weeks to receive. The vehicle continued to stall after the part was replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000.

Warning lights on dash service 4 wheel drive. Skid control. Check engine light. Esp. Bas. Shift indicator intermittent radio plop. Speed control control inop.
