1 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2011

Esm- electronic shift module issue: p, r, n, d, l all light up simultaneously and the car gets confused as to which gear it should be using. Occasionally, the check engine light comes and goes. After reversing, I put it in drive and it shifts roughly. Randomly the car loses power driving down the street. I had the esm replaced and a month later is showing a u404 code.

2 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2011

Vehicle is 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee and currently has 18300 miles and was purchased new in Jan. 2008. Two failure to accelerate problems have occurred. One on 5/31/10 and another on 04/21/11. In both instances the vehicle would not shift into the next gear and the speed could not exceed 30 to 35 mph even with the accelerator pressed all the way to the floor. The problem occurred without any warning. After the first occurrence the dealer replaced the bezel shift selector. After the second occurrence the dealer could not determine what the problem was. Merging onto a busy freeway where traffic speeds routinely exceed 80mph and not being able to accelerate beyond 30-35 mph is a serious safety problem which could result in injury or death. The same safety concerns apply if the vehicle suddenly decelerates from 70 to 30 mph.

3 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2011

The dash indicators for the gear shift will all illuminate at the same time and the vehicle will go into neurtal. This has happened three or four times. The last time it occured while traveling on the expressway, fortunately I was able to get it back in gear after taping the shift lever several times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they said they replaced a electonic shift module. They kept the old part that was removed.

4 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2011

When putting transmission into drive, the vehicle will not accelerate, this problem first occured at approx 31,000 miles. The dealership replaced the shift control module. The proble went away. Then again at 62,000 miles, when pulling into traffic, the vehicle started to accelerate, then lost power. Another vehicle had to swerve to miss me, I would have been hit in the drivers door had he not swerved. My vehicle would not move, after cycling the ignition key , the problem went away, took to dealer they told me that the same shift control module needs to be replaced (again) for 750. 00. The vehicle is unsafe to drive and I am shocked that someone has not been killed by this issue as there are hundreds of reports of this on the internet. This is absolutely a manufacturing defect as it has happened on a wide number of identical vehicles with the same repair being performed only to have the problem repeat itself.

5 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2011

Vehicle has lost power while driving. You will be crusing along or pulling out into an intersection and you will loose all power. The engine will not rev, no response at all. After waiting for a perion of time, the vehicle starts going again. This happened to me four times, once in the middle of an intersection, four lanes in all directions, and the vehicle just lost all power. Very scary. I took the vehicle to my local garage, and he told me that this was the second Jeep to do the same thing. The owner had to have the vehicle towed into the garage, and upon arrival, could find nothing wrong. I had to go to an authorized Jeep dealer, and I asked them if they ever heard of this happening, and the reply was, just 3 or 4 times. . . . Imaging if this failure happened this often in this small area, how many other vehicles may be having the same problem. The vehicle only had 31000 miles on it, but it was out of warranty for time by 9 months. This is a very dangerous event when you are driving and suddenly loose all power and don't know if or when it is coming back. Chrysler said they do not have a problem. I don't believe them.

6 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2011

When my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee is in drive, there is a loss of power. The check-engine light comes on, and it's as if the car doesn't know whether it's in drive, neutral, reverse, etc. The dealer says I need a electronic shift module to the tune of $600+. After looking into this, I see it is a problem with many Jeep Grand Cherokees. I am looking into getting Jeep to take responsibility for the faulty part.

7 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact was driving approximately 30 mph when the vehicle would no longer accelerate and came to a stop. The check engine light was illuminated and the steering wheel became abnormally stiff. The contact was able to move the vehicle to the side of the road and turned the ignition off. When the contact restarted the vehicle, the vehicle jerked but the contact was able to drive the vehicle to his residence. The failure persisted at least sx times and the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician advised that the transmission module control would need replacing. The manufacturer was contacted and advised they would work with the dealer in assisting with repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 27,600.

8 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate and all of the warning lights on the dash board were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician advised that the shift module would need replacing. The mechanic advised that there was no guarantee that the failure would not recur. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure persisted. The contact stated that the failure would occur most frequently in colder temperatures. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 53,000.

9 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/25/2010

I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with about 38,000 miles on it. It has stalled out several times when trying to accelerate almost resulting in a few accidents. I was told the electronic shift module needs to be replaced, which has been a recurring problem for a large number of Jeeps this year-make-model. The part alone costs over $700 and is on national back order for over a month. There absolutely needs to be a recall. . . . This is a serious safety hazard and absolutely ridiculous!!.

10 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle began to decelerate with the illumination of the transmission warning indicator. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The engine was turned off and restarted. The vehicle resumed normally without the warning light illuminated. The failures occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on three occasions and they were unable to determine the cause of failure. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the gear shifter module was replaced. The failure recurred two times after the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.

11 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

Driving at highway speed in drive, transmission downshifted into 4th gear without manual assistance. Pulled over to side of road and attempted to shift back into drive unsuccessfully. I then shifted into park and back into drive. Dashboard indicator said the transmission remained in 4th even though the shifter was in drive. Shut vehicle off and then restarted the engine. I then put the vehicle into drive and resumed my trip. Also, on a second occasion, driving with transmission in drive, starting from a stop, transmission downshifted into 1st gear. Pulled over and shut off engine and restarted. Put transmission into drive and resumed trip with no further problem.

12 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 4x4 problem: dangerous shifter module defect to whom it may concern: last week, my wife was bringing our children to school, and upon leaving the driveway, the transmission jumped, the car jerked back dangerously into the open street, and all of the lights illuminated on the dash (p, n, r, d). Fortunately for us, she was able to return the car to the drivway, unharmed. Living on a busy street, we are very lucky that it happened without any accident/injury. As this is the second time something like this has happened, I am now afraid to let her drive this car any longer, upon contacting Jeep/Chrysler, I was told that they would not be able to cover this safety repair (approx. Cost is $1025. Oo w/tax,parts,labor). I am downright frustrated, angry, and fearful. After reading scores of ofher similar complaints about the shifter module on reputable sites like edmunds. Com, my frustration with Chrysler has increased. They simply won't concede that there is a dangerous safety flaw with the shifter in the vehicle. Please, any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. [xxx].

13 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/30/2009

Today while driving on a highway at approximately 35-40mph my vehicle stalled. I had come to a complete stop and was awaiting a traffic light change. When the light changed and I stepped on the accelerator the vehicle began to hesitate and jerk and the esp/bas light, malfunction indicator light (check engine) and a message stating transmission over temp came on. I was in the left lane and immediately put on my flashers. The driver behind realized that I was in trouble and put on his as well. After I was able to roll to the shoulder, I immediately turned the vehicle off. After waiting approximately 5mins, I restarted the vehicle and continued to drive slowly and carefully to my office since I was just 2 blocks from work. This experience scared me because had this happened while I was driving at the 60-65 mph rate on this very busy highway, I could have been hurt. After reading several of the other complaints, I can also relate to the complaint about the tires having had to replace a broken stem after owning the vehicle only 2 days and I currently still have water leaking into my vehicle on raining days on the passenger side and now through the lights. I drive on the highway daily and after today's stall out, I am afraid to drive this vehicle. I called the dealership today and explained my issues and told the service manager about all of the lights and he told me the car was probably cold and if the lights don't go out I can bring it in on Saturday. Well today is Wednesday and I will not drive that car again. Since the dealership is quite a distance from my home, I will have the car towed so that it can be checked out. I am very uncomfortable with the idea of ever driving this vehicle again. I transport children as part of my job from time to time and I could never forgive myself if something was to happen to them while we are riding in this vehicle.

14 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2009

15 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that she suddenly lost the ability to accelerate after the shift indicator light illuminated. The contact stopped the vehicle and restarted. She was able to accelerate for a few seconds before she lost the ability to accelerate again and the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the electronic shift module was replaced at that time. The contact stated that in October 2010, the failure occurred again. The electronic shift module was being replaced again. The contact called the manufacturer who offered to pay for the cost of the part. The current mileage was approximately 53,200. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.

16 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2008

The transmission in my 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo started clunking loudly when I shifted from reverse into drive. The service engine light will come on after this occurs. The problem was intermittent, then, one day I was sitting at a red light. When it turned green, I stepped on the gas pedal and the vehicle would not move. It acted as if was in park. I shifted it to park and back into drive several times and suddenly the vehicle slammed into gear lunged forward into traffic. I reported this problem to my dealership (the vehicle is under warranty) who told me no codes registered in relation to the service engine light having been on and that they could not duplicate the problem. They returned the vehicle to me and two days later the same transmission clunking began and the service engine light came on. I left a red light today and the vehicle would not shift from first gear into second. Finally, it shifted, slamming into gear, with a loud, hard clunk that shot my vehicle several feet ahead. I almost lost control of the vehicle and would have had an accident if a car had been ahead of me. It's back at the dealership who claims there's nothing wrong. The car has only 21,000 miles on it. Clearly, there is something wrong and I fear for my safety and cannot simply go buy another vehicle.

17 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2008

My vehicle stalls without notice losing power but not actually shutting off. At other times it acts like it is hanging in 1st gear. On numerous occasions it has nearly gotten me hit by oncoming traffic or nearly rearended. I have had it checked out 3 times by the dealer and they say they are aware of the problem but no recall has been issued by chryler to fix problem. I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

18 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2008

There have been several people with the 2007 wk crd that have reported that their vehicle has died on them while driving. Reading about this on Jeep forum, I discovered that there is a TSB related to a faulty crankshaft position sensor on wk Jeeps that were built before June 12th, 2007. My Jeep was built in April, 2007. While my Jeep has not stalled, it is my wife's vehicle and she is frequently transporting our two children. The TSB calls for checking and replacing the sensor if it fails, but I do not find this to be acceptable. If the vehicle were to just die while they were going down the highway it could result in serious injuries to my wife and kids. I believe that Chrysler should do a recall to replace this sensor before anyone gets hurt.

19 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2007

Jeep accelerates then at about 15-20mph it wont accelerate any more and boxes will appear around the p n r d and then it will all of a sudden jerk forward and the check engine light will go on.
