I was driving on highway 26 west bound in oregon just outside of portland. My car has ecodiesel engine in it. I usually buy gas when it is about a quarter tank of fuel. I had about quarter tank of fuel and about 150 miles range left. I was on the left lane and traveling at about 60 mph. All the sudden my engine stopped instantly on the left lane of highway 26. All the cars behind me hit the brakes not to rear end me. My car's engine stopped and slowed down so quickly. It was scary. I tried to pull over to the right side of the highway. Once the car was parked, it said that battery saving mode. It would crank up but not start the engine. I called a mobile mechanic over. He checked the battery and alternator and said the battery is strong and no blown fuses whatsoever. He then went under the car and listen the fuel pump and said that it sounds very bad. He had beliefs that I had problems with my fuel system, maybe a broken fuel pump. He read the codes out of car computer and they all were related to the fuel systems. I started doing some online research and found out that Jeep Grand Cherokees has a faulty design of fuel tanks and if the fuel goes below the quarter tank level. Then pump does not work properly. Upon reading this, I called a friend who brought me 5 gallons of diesel and we put the diesel inside the tank and the car started immediately. I drove it to a near by gas station and filed up the tank full. I think this car has some sort of faulty design of fuel pump. It will cause a fatal accident if it does not get corrected by the manufacturer as soon as possible. When the engine stopped suddenly, the car actually swerved around little bit. This incident could have ended fatally if I was not quick enough. I am writing this to let you gusy know about this flaw about Grand Cherokee ecodiesels 3. 0 engines.
Alternator stopped working, changed the battery and light turned on saying battery voltage low. Driver window and mirror buttons stopped working at the same time, causing us to think it was the battery that was not working but still does not work after the battery was changed.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that he heard alternator whine sound while driving at 50 mph. The contact pulled the vehicle into a gas station parking lot. The contact could not get the vehicle to shift out of neutral gear and would shut off. The contact put on the emergency brake on and opened the hood and he saw fire coming out of the alternator along with smoke as the vehicle ran for another five minutes. The flames turned into smoke with the alternator burning up. The computer, the battery and other systems may have been damaged by the flames. The vehicle had a recall repair for this issue done back in 2017. The contact suspects that the recall repair did not replace the alternator from that previous repair. The vehicle was taken to the dealer astorg Jeep (1601 13th st, parkersburg, wv 26101 304-485-5555). The dealer ordered a new computer, an alternator and a battery. They plan to install those new parts and see what other parts were damaged and also needed to be replaced. The manufacturer had not yet been contacted. The failure mileage was 52,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, several unknown warning lights illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The contact used the parking brakes to slow the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to all american Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram of odessa located at 2510 e 8 th st, odessa, TX 79761, (432) 614-0801. The tow truck driver identified the failure of the alternator as the cause of the failure. The contact was informed by the dealer that the battery needed to be replaced prior to a diagnostic test being performed on the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,800.
Tl-the contact was calling on behalf of his daughter that owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo. The contact stated that the message center displayed " battery low voltage " , while driving approximately 35 mph, smoke started to emerge from the engine compartment and then the vehicle stalled. The contact is a certified mechanic and managed to electrically disconnect the alternator and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle was driven to the residence. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or the dealer for a diagnostic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 77,000. Bp.
No low battery warning light, only show a warning if alternator is bad and not charging battery. Thus, car can stop without warning due to low battery because of wear and needing replacement- without warning. When this happens, everything in car works on electricity can cause a very bad accident if stops in traffic. Also, with no key override when the car electrical module will not read to the key fob if you are in or out of the car you can not open doors or windows or turn on or off anything, if doors/windows locked when this happens this is very dangerous-no way to get out or in. If stuck in the desert without help and car module stops picking up key fob one is sol. Lots of complaints online. Very unhappy with the fact that Chrysler creates recalls only for a select few when they know that they continue to use the same faulty technology on most of their cars they build. My rear door module stopped working and I had to replace it and it cost me over $500. When going online I see that Chrysler had a recall for this problem for older models but would not cover the newer years although they used the same faulty technology on them as well. Fortunately, I had just parked my car in the garage and did not lock the doors so we could still get in it and have it towed.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving 35 mph, the low battery voltage warning indicator illuminated, the windshield wipers activated, and the display screen went blank. The contact heard an abnormal noise before the engine turned off. The contact made multiple attempts to start the vehicle, but was unsuccessful. An independent mechanic stated that he could smell smoke from the alternator. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact called marburger Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram (located at 1310 e dixon blvd, shelby, nc 28152, (704) 484-0049) to notify them that the vehicle was experiencing failures similar to what was listed in NHTSA campaign number: 17v435000 (electrical system). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 53,000.
While in motion, on my way work, my 2014 Grand Cherokee summit with 3. 0 l turbo diesel engine, 220 amp alternator and 49000 miles experienced a loss of power steering, battery light came on, voltmeter showed no charging of battery. My electronic indicator system stated the vehicle went into battery saver mode with a loss of abs, heating and ventilation, air suspension system, all safety enhancements such as park sense, no electronic transmission system changes and check engine light came on. There was a recall on gasoline engine 2014 Grand Cherokees along with others (Chrysler recall t36) and I have seen another complaint similar to mine sharing the same engine on this sight. I do believe this is was caused by catastrophic alternator failure. A new battery was installed and the battery light is still on and still in battery saver mode( an indicator also of no charging) and volmeter indicates no charging. I will be replacing the alternator tomorrow.
I am having to replace an alternator on this vehicle for sudden failure. Currently there is a recall for exact condition but my VIN is outside of recall limits. I feel my vehicle should be included as exact conditions exist. .
Tl- the contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving about 30 mph, the vehicle started to loose power. The low battery light illuminated. The vehicle was pulled to the side and the contact noticed smoke from underneath the hood. A burning odor was perceived. The vehicle was towed to the walser Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram (866-323-0559, located at 314 mainstreet, hopkins, mn 55343) where it was diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000. Fe.
My 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee ,shut down while I was driving in the issaquah fall city road . Steering wheels locked and brakes failed and everything shut down. I barely made it to the walgreens parking lot where the vehicle completely died to the point where even the keys wouldn't work . I barely made it alive . I am glad I didn't crash into anyone . I had to tow the vehicle later in the day to the dealership . They asked me to drop it off at their garage . Today they got back to me saying , there was an open recall on the vehicle and that caused the alternator to fail and shut down everything . They said because it's an open recall they would fix it themselves as it's covered under some warranty . But they also told me that there is an issue with some oil pressure sensor and the awd system is stuck in awd and they will have to fix it and have me a parts and labor charge of 2000 usd which I have to bear . Is this normal practice . I don't know how the awd system suddenly got into this state . If it's a result of the alternator issue caused by the open recall , wouldn't they manufacturer/dealer have to bear it . . Thanks !!.
This incident regards the t-36 recall issued by fiat/Chrysler, which involves 2012-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees (among others), and "affects vehicles equipped with electro-hydraulic power steering systems, 5. 7l or 3. 6l engines, and 160, 180, or 220 amp alternators. In those vehicles, NHTSA says that the alternator may fail without warning. " during June 2018, my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee (summit trim), experienced sudden alternator failure while in motion on a highway. The alternator started to smoke, and by the time I had reached my destination, there was grey smoke barreling out of the hood of my car and the battery was completely dead. The Jeep had to be towed to a nearby dealership for repairs. In addition to the alternator and battery replacment, the tensioner, idler and serpentine belt had to be replaced due to undue strain placed on them by the alternator failure. The incident that occurred matches the description of the t-36 recall. Additionally, the year, make, engine size, and amperage of the alternator all match the description given in the t-36 recall. However, the VIN number for my particular Jeep did not appear under the recall, and therefore, Jeep/Chrysler would not repair my Jeep under that particular recall. They did fix the Jeep, but at my cost (the owner). I 100% believe this an oversight by Jeep/Chrysler (or maybe NHTSA) and should be remedied immediately. I do believe there are other Jeep owners that are unaware of this issue, due to the lack of notification by Jeep/Chrysler, and will experience the same issue, which could cause an accident and lead to injury. Please review the details of my Jeep VIN and why it was not included in the t-36 recall. If this happened to my Jeep, then I imagine it will happen to others. Fortunately, I was not injured, but others could be injured who are unaware of this issue. Please contact me with any questions.
The alternator light came on in the vehicle while driving, then within about 10-15 minutes the radio had no sound although the screen was still lit. Other lights then came on such as the engine light, anti-lock brakes. About 5 minutes later, I had to stop at a stop sign, when taking off again, the car would barely move. It wouldn't go above about 10-15 miles per hour, then it picked up speed but I no longer had power steering. As I pull into a parking lot to get the car off of the road, the wipers turned on (even though the switch was off). When I got into the parking spot, the car could not be put into park due to the power issues. I had to hold my foot on the brake until the engine died. Within 2-3 minutes the engine died. Everything was dead, including the power locks. Then a few minutes later the dash would light saying the ignition or accessory unit was turned on but you couldn't do anything to turn it off. Everything would then turn off again. After sitting for about 30-45 min, the car would start back up but it was not driven anywhere, we had it towed. Both the alternator and battery needed to be replaced which is what caused the issues. The alternator is under a recall for my model/year/engine type but not for my VIN. The recall was due to very similar issues, loss of steering control, loss of power.
Mfg 4/1/2013, replaced bcm / 4/27/2016 after engine would not turn off. Several months later engine would not turn off. Replaced trans valve. On 5/3/2018 the bcm short circuited and alternator burned while vehicle was parked leaving strong smoke and burnt smell in cabin. Vehicle has 56,000 miles and has had bcm replaced twice in 23 months. No diagnoses availed as to why vehicle will not shut off on occasion. All routine maintenance and recalls are current.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the vehicle made a squealing and whining noise and there was a burning odor underneath the hood. While driving approximately 35 mph, the abs, power steering, and brake warning indicators illuminated. Also, the windshield wipers and other components began to malfunction. The contact parked and turned off the vehicle, but it failed to restart. The contact replaced the battery, which caused the vehicle to operate appropriately for a short period of time before the warning indicators illuminated again. The contact checked under the hood and noticed smoke coming from the alternator. The contact stated the alternator and battery failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact called cary autopark Chrysler Jeep (400 auto park blvd, cary, north carolina 27511, 888-923-9538) and was informed that the alternator and brakes failed. The dealer would not assist because the VIN was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 47,800.
Thursday afternoon, there was a faint sound of a belt whirring or similar, but no change to driving. Gabriel noted a weird smell when we parked at home, but I didn't smell it. I drove to a meeting and noticed the sound again, but no lights on or change to driving. Friday morning, I drove to school and the battery light came on, but no other changes. Friday afternoon I drove from school at 1:20 to hwy 12 and mission on my way home. Within a few blocks the battery light came on and a notice to go to battery save mode came on. By middle rincon, I started to smell something, but no change otherwise. At that light, another driver waved me down and we pulled into valero. He helped me lift the hood, which had billowing smoke by then coming out, and he said it looked like the alternator, but did not see fire. I then called lithia and then aaa to get a tow to lithia, because I was concerned about driving it any further. I was charged $5 for the extra . 2 miles of the 5. 2 miles it took me to get towed. I remembered that when I got my oil change in late Dec-early Jan, bob told me there was a recall on the alternator, but there was no part or solution available yet. I did not receive a recall letter, but researched today that people received it in July 2017. My dealership insists on going through my extended warranty and a $200 deductible and did not give me a car for the days it's been there so far. I have filed a complaint with the company's recall department.
My Jeep as the t36 alternator recall. My vehicle recently was affected by this recall and it's extremely dangerous. My enter vehicle powered off and that left me with no power steering or much control of the vehicle while traveling down the road. . When I was able to get to a safe location I found my alternator smoking heavy and my car was completely dead. I took the Jeep to the dealership and the only current fix is to replace the alternator with the same faulty design that failed in the first place. This is extremely dangerous if this would have failed at a higher rate of speed or in any daily driving situation. I cannot believe Chrysler is getting away with this.
Chrysler (fca us llc) recall t36 / NHTSA 17v-435 incident summary on 2018-01-21, my 2104 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalled while traveling at approximately 65mph. A crash was avoided, but the situation was highly dangerous to passengers and other drivers on the road. This incident exhibited all the symptoms and warnings from Chrysler (fca us llc) recall t36 / NHTSA 17v-435. (summarized below) the vehicle lost power and stalled while driving on the highway. Just prior to the stall, warnings briefly flashed in the instrument control panel. Warnings included; battery saver mode, abs system failure, suspension failure. All electronics in the vehicle exhibited bizarre behavior and could not be controlled. Additionally the speedometer continually recycled and the wipers turned on with no intervention. Complete loss of power steering and braking occurred. After the stall completed and the vehicle was stopped, a loud high-pitched ticking noise came from the engine compartment. Additionally, a pungent burning smell and smoke came from the engine compartment. The vehicle was completely disabled and unresponsive and was towed to a Jeep dealership on 2018-01-21. A claim was filled with fca us llc recall department on 2018-01-23. As of 2018-01-26, the dealer is still waiting for fca us llc recall department to respond. As of 2018-01-26, the parts are still not yet available for this recall. T36 / NHTSA 17v-435 recall summary the alternator on your vehicle may experience diode thermal fatigue failure due to cyclical loads induced by ehps. When the diodes fail, the alternator will no longer supply electrical energy to the vehicle and may lead to a vehicle stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. Failed diodes may also develop a resistive short circuit that can result in heat, smoke and/or fire originating within the alternator. .
Recall on Jeep alternator and brake booster water shield. My complaint is the length of time in getting the parts. The alternator went out and it has been sitting at the dealership for 11 days now and parts are still not released from Chrysler. They will not give me a rental. What is a person to do? except pay 800$ and then fight Chrysler to get my money back.
On December 24, 2017 my alternator short circuited and my alternator caught on fire. My car was doing nothing out of the ordinary by delivering christmas gifts to family and friends within a two mile radius. Initially when I started the car, it sounded a little out of the ordinary, but no signs of having an issue. I drove less than a mile, and it started to have an electrical burning smell. I parked my car and turned it off, and when I started the car again, the car had a humming sound, and the battery light came on. I drove ten feet and there was smoke everywhere in my vehicle. When I opened my hood, my alternator was on fire. I parked the car, and never drove it after that. I had to have my car towed to kona auto center at my own expense. Kona auto center was not helpful, and did not have a replacement part for the alternator. They told me to go and buy one, but if something happens then it would be my fault. They gave me the run around, and I ended up being more frustrated because they would not give me loaner, and kept trying to upsell me to another vehicle. The repair to my car was not a concern of theirs, and they could not give me a window of repair time. Being a single mother, and a manager for my company, I do not have time to waste. I ended up trading my Jeep in, and nothing was resolved.
Safety defect/non compliance description and safety risk the alternator may experience diode thermal fatigue failure due to cyclical loads induced by electro-hydraulic power steering. Failed diodes may also develop a resistive short circuit that can result in heat, smoke and/or fire originating within the alternator. Repair description the alternator part number must be inspected on all involved vehicles. Vehicles found with the suspect alternator will have it replaced with a new alternator containing improved diodes on all affected vehicles. Recall status incomplete but repair parts are not available get notified when parts are available on December 19, 2017 we experienced once again another problem. After my son's youth basketball game, we went to the parking lot to head a couple of blocks home at approximately 8:15 pm. Turning out onto the roadway, the dashboard lit up with warning light stating that the battery was low and the electronic power steering started howling. I shut down as much of the infotainment center as possible to conserve power to make sure that I made it home. The front windshield started to fog up so I turned the defroster on low. As soon as the air started coming out, I could smell an electrical fire. Upon my arrival home, I popped open the hood and could smell electrical burn. I decided to shut the vehicle off and research recalls and technical service bulletins. I believe this new issue falls under recall t75.
I was driving down the street at about 35 mph when the battery icon flashed on. The air conditioner and the radio cutoff following the display of the battery icon. A few seconds later the power steering went out along with a loss of power. A message displayed on the dashboard telling me to pull over immediately along with a service trans brake message and a few others that I can't recall. I tried to get to a safe location but the vehicle shifted into park and completely turned off when I was going less than 5 mph. Causing the vehicle to be stranded in the middle of the road with traffic trying to get by. I slowed down because there were vehicles in front of me making turns. This is the third time this has happened. Towed vehicle to dealership and they said the alternator burned up. The battery is damaged as well. This sounds similar to the two recalls named "alternator may fail resulting in engine stall". Notified the dealership and Jeep customer care about this and they informed me that they can fix this recall because my VIN is not part of the recall. Vehicle is out of warranty so they say the repairs will come out of my pocket. After the first time this happened about a year ago I refuse to drive the vehicle on the highway because of the sudden shutoff and loss of steering. I feel this could cause an accident and I refuse to take that risk.
Jeep failed to start for weeks without a jump start. Replaced battery twice and alternator once; third battery replacement during 11. 15. 2017 repairs. Total integrated power module (tipm) found to be faulty. Safety issues are a major concern, as the tipm is critical for the safe operation of the vehicle.
While driving the Jeep, the alternator shorted and stalled the car. All power was lost to the engine steering and lights just as I was crossing a very busy intersection. I was able to roll through the intersection where the car died in the middle of the road. Alternator began to smoke heavily. Complicating matters, the car has a fully electronic shifting mechanism preventing me from putting the car in neutral and pushing it off the road. It sat in the middle of a road until a tow truck arrived.
Fuel delivery system (notably tank filler and related emissions equipment) poorly designed to fail just after California 50k mileage warranty. Dealer wants $800 to fix a problem the mfg. Designed. Alternator recall-with no related parts to repair-driving and waiting for the vehicle to erupt into a ball of fire is unacceptable. What components are being installed on 2018 models? why can't those parts be installed on my 2014? I am being prejudiced against, as I cannot legally (thanks to ab 217) trade the vehicle in, as no dealer can resell it with an open safety recall!! I need to get another car-but I can't!!!!.
Fca and NHTSA have issued a recall notice that explains that the alternator may fail, resulting in stalling or possibly fire. It has been said that replacement of the alternator is necessary in affected vehicles. This won't take place until 2018 because of parts availability. This is totally unacceptable. The tens, or possibly hundreds of thousands of these vehicles will pose an enormous safety risk for occupants of these vehicles, and other vehicles sharing the road with them. This recall repair needs to be expedited in a much more timely manner. Fca needs to be made aware of the risks their customers are being exposed to because of the delay in making this repair. I received notice from fca on 7-14-2017, and NHTSA on 10-3-2017.
While I was driving down the road the car completely shut down. All power shut off on car. Car could not be put in nuetral to move off road. Car would not restart. Tow company and Chrysler dealership said it was an alternator problem.
On 9-08-2017, my wife and I were returning to pfafftown, nc from garden city, SC. A few miles into the drive I thought I heard a high pitched sound, but could not locate it. Then we thought we smelled something hot, but thought is was an old truck ahead of us, but a few miles later I got a low voltage sign and told my wife to car the nearest Jeep dealership as we had entered conway, SC. Having some basic engine knowledge I knew the alternator wasn't charging the battery and that I would lose all power. Luckily for us the dealership was less than 1. 5 miles and I was able to drive to it. When I opened the hood I found the alternator smoking and almost hot enough to catch fire due to overcharging. Luckily the dealership was able to replace the alternator and we were on our was home in about an hour, but with a $806. 00 cost for the repair. The vehicle had 74109 miles on the odometer. When I got home my mechanic told me that there was a recall on 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees for exactly what happen to mine. I checked this website and fiat/ Chrysler and found my VIN was not included. I also talked to a nice Chrysler representative over the phone. She also said that it was not included. It just seems to me that my vehicle, which is the same make, model and year as those under recall, and had the exact problem addressed by the recall should be covered by the recall. And note that the vehicle was close to losing all electrical power, which affects the steering and transmission on these vehicles and I could have lost control.
Sudden alternator fail. Burned up and caught fire. . . . Burned belts around it as well. Saw a bettery fail then hood started smoking while driving. Vehicle is only three years old!!! saw recalls on this for the 2014 Grand Cherokee but not sure why my VIN does apply?? having same exact problem as the rest of them that were recalled. Huge safety concern for the driver as it's burning up under the hood. Still low miles on three-year-old vehicle, this should not be happening. Need a recall on this model as well -- please help!!.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving, he heard an abnormal noise coming from the vehicle. The contact then noticed smoke coming from the hood of the vehicle. Upon inspection, the contact stated that he noticed that smoke came from the engine but noticed a wiring odor. No warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the VIN was not covered under the recall. The failure mileage was 84,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Without warning, the contact noticed smoke rising from under the hood. The vehicle was taken to a dealer (phillips Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram, 3440 s pine Ave, ocala, FL 34471, (352) 732-7577) where it was diagnosed that the alternator assembly needed to be replaced. The alternator was replaced and the dealer indicated that the vehicle was excluded from NHTSA campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system) due to the amp being 180 and not 160. It was unknown if the vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign number: 17v435000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no solution other than having the dealer replace the part. The failure mileage was not available.
Had rapid failure of alternator very similar to what is mentioned in NHTSA 14v-634. Based on the fact that mileage seems to be low for an alternator failure (44k) and same engine had similar issues, I question why my Jeep isn't covered in the recall or if the recall should/needs to be expanded. We were parked with the engine running. When I shifted the car in reverse, the low voltage light came on, the alternator quit working and ended up destroying the drive belt. There was smoke coming from the alternator and I was concerned of possible fire.
