1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2026

While driving home from work on March 13, 2026, the alternator in my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee (3. 0l ecodiesel) failed, resulting in a progressive loss of electrical power. As battery voltage dropped, the vehicle entered “limp mode. ” when I was aproximatly 1 mile from my home when I was forced to stop at a railroad crossing while a freight train was passing. At that time, due to low voltage, the electronic shifter and ignition system became completely unresponsive. I was unable to shift the vehicle into park or neutral and was also unable to shut off the engine. The vehicle remained in drive, requiring constant brake pressure to prevent forward movement. This created an immediate and dangerous situation, as I was stopped very close to a moving train with no functional means of securing or disabling the vehicle. Any loss of braking force or control could have caused the vehicle to enter the path of the train, creating a high likelihood of serious injury or death. After reaching my residence, the condition persisted. I remained unable to shift or shut down the vehicle and was forced to manually disconnect the negative battery cable, which is located under the passenger seat, in order to stop the engine. I am very lucky that I had a small metric socket set in the vehice, that I am somewhat mechanically enclined, and that I have long arms & legs, as this process was extremely difficult. I had to disconect te battery cable while maintaining my foot on the brake to avoid crashing into my garage. The vehicle appears to be designed such that engine shutdown is not permitted unless the vehicle is in park, while the electronic shifter becomes inoperative during low-voltage conditions. This combination creates a hazardous failure mode in which the driver cannot place the vehicle in park or turn off the engine during an electrical failure. This incident appears consistent with hazards identified in NHTSA campaign number 16v240000 (recall s27). Despite records indicating that rec.

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2025

The anti-lock braking system and the electronic traction control system are both failing. There were previous recalls on both systems that say they have been repaired, but the lights for both are constantly on. The brakes do not work fully, and it has caused me to slide down the street from my workplace. The electronic traction control system not working has caused it so that my four-wheel drive does not work, and I have gotten stuck in the snow multiple times. The car has been inspected by a repair technician. The warning lights came on right as the problem was happening.

Subject: safety defect report – failure of telematics module (tcu) causing loss of 9-1-1 emergency function, electrical system malfunctions, and potential brake booster recall defect (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee) dear NHTSA, I am submitting this complaint because my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited is experiencing multiple safety-related failures that I believe are part of a wider defect pattern affecting this model year. Several of these issues involve systems that are critical for emergency safety, braking, and vehicle control. Dear NHTSA, I am submitting this complaint because my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited is experiencing multiple safety-related failures that I believe are part of a wider defect pattern affecting this model year. Several of these issues involve systems that are critical for emergency safety, braking, and vehicle control. ? 1. Telematics control unit (tcu) failure causing loss of 9-1-1/sos emergency function my Jeep is displaying repeated “service emergency vehicle phone” errors and the sos/911 emergency button no longer functions. This is a major safety concern, especially in the event of an accident or breakdown. The tcu failure also causes: •uconnect 8. 4 system not booting •hvac controls becoming non-functional or unsafe (blowing incorrect temperatures, failing to defrost, turning off unexpectedly) •random system resets •loss of ability to control climate during driving (creating visibility issues in cold/wet weather) these issues align with widespread failures of the uconnect 8. 4 / tcu hardware on 2013–2015 Grand Cherokees, which were not included in a recall despite many vehicles exhibiting the same dangerous symptoms. ? 2. Tcu-related canbus interference causing transmission and drivability safety issues when the tcu fails, the vehicle experiences: •transmission communication errors •vehicle entering limp mode unexpectedly •“service transmission” and “press brake to shift” warnings •delayed or unpredictable shi.

7 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2025

My tcm (transmission control module). Yes. While driving my Jeep kept shifting into nuetral all by itself and I would have to shift back into drive. This is going into my Jeep dealer on 8-5 and put on the diagnostic test. It was only checked out by plugging in the meter and this is the code that came back. Has not been inspected by police, insurance, Jeep dealer as of yet until 8-5-25. Yes it went from shifting g into nuetral by itself to slow g down on its own and it happened most recently on a major interstate with an 18 wheeler behind me and almost rear ended me. As I gave it gas it wouldn’t go I rolled to side of road. This was the 5th time this happened to me. It all started back in beginning of July. The check engine light came on.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2025

The engine and powertrain are affected by a defect described in safety recall 66a / NHTSA 23v-411 (loss of crankshaft position). Despite the recall software update being performed, my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee continues to display diagnostic trouble code p0336 (crankshaft position sensor performance). This issue causes intermittent stalling, hard starts, and loss of engine power, which creates a serious risk of crash if the vehicle stalls while driving. The safety defect described in the recall — tone wheel magnetic material delamination leading to crankshaft signal loss — is still present. Two diagnostic reports (one from an fca-authorized dealership and one from an independent mechanic) confirm the presence of dtc p0336. The service manager at the dealership agreed this is likely recall-related but said fca corporate must authorize hardware repair. Fca (case #93427994) has refused to approve full repair, leaving the safety defect unresolved. The defect has been confirmed by the dealership and independent service center and persists despite the software reprogramming remedy. Warning lights (check engine) are active and the issue is repeatable.

9 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2025

Trunk lift gate opens on its own and continually opens and closes; removing the battery does not stop the automatic open/close and it will continue to do so for some time. It does it randomly, but more so after the car has gotten wet from a wash or rain. While sitting stationary the trunk opened on its own while locked and alarmed.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2025

Vehicle will shut off while driving losing brakes and power steering. No lights on dash just says shift to park to start. Very dangerous.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2025

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the tailgate was closing independently. The tailgate had crashed down and struck the contact on the head. The contact was not injured. The contact had to hold the tailgate ajar. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was like NHTSA campaign number: 23v338000 (electrical system, structure). The local dealer was called, and an appointment was scheduled. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that there were no open recalls on the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/21/2025

While on highway, wipers, lights and horn began on their own. Then car shifted to neutral and brakes failed. I was going 70 miles per hour. I was able to get off the highway and have the car inspected by a licensed mechanic. It is the electrical computer or tipm. The car is unable to start. This issue is a very dangerous safety issue.

13 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2025

The contact's wife owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while in stop-and-go traffic, several warning lights began to flash on the instrument panel and the vehicle started to lose power. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the starter was replaced. The contact stated that several months later, the contact stated that the "service shifter" warning light flashed on the instrument panel with the gear shifter lights flashing. The contact stated that the vehicle independently shifted into neutral(n) while driving at 40 mph. The contact drove the vehicle back to the independent mechanic where the mechanic test drove the vehicle. The mechanic informed the contact that he had experienced the failure while driving over a bump in the roadway and several warning lights flashed on the instrument panel. The contact was informed that the failure might be related to the electrical system and that the vehicle was unsafe to be driven. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 165,000.

The contact stated that the vehicle was severely burned from the front end to the rear seats. There were no injuries sustained. The contact was unsure whether a fire department report and a police report were filed. The vehicle was towed and totaled. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2024

My instrument cluster (where the speed, gas level, engine temperature, etc. Is displayed) had completely blacked out. It was periodically coming on. But it's not coming on at all anymore. I've taken it to the dealership, had it replaced (with a used part), had the wiring checked, also tried reprogramming the instrument cluster. Nothing has worked. There was a recall for this same exact problem, with the same exact vehicle except my vehicle was manufactured 3 months after the recall notice called for vehicle manufactured through Aug 2013 my was November 2013. I feel that my vehicle also should've been part of that recall notice.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2024

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed and approaching a stop light, the gear shifter unexpectedly shifted from drive(d) to neutral(n); the vehicle stalled and failed to return to normal operation. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was drivable and was driven to the residence. The vehicle was later towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was made aware of an electronic computer module unit failure and stated that the module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 19v447000 (power train) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2024

I was driving home from dinner and while driving I got a notification on the dashboard and then few moments later it locked up and everything started turning off. Incuding the radio, ac but not the car. The car would not drive once I got it on the side of the road. The car would not turn off due to not being able to place car in park. It was stuck in drive. My husband had to come over and put his foot on brake and take over the wheel. He then hit the power button for 5 seconds and it went into park and turned off. We called a tow company to take it to dealership to get fixed. We seen we had some recalls so we asked if that was the issue they said yes and ordered parts to fix. Days and weeks went on got car back and when I drove home my car I will say does not feel safe for me to be in nor be on the road. I had smoke inside my car where battery is when on side of road which one day will be where my kids are. Also they said nothing was wrong with alternator but when on side of road I could smell burnt alternator. They said was fine and recall wasn't needed. I do not feel safe at all nor does my husband feel safe driving the car. Dealership we bought from never told us about the recalls when we bought in 2020, and now this dealership saying it doesn't need to be done we do not feel the car is safe to be on road and will be fire hazard down road.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2024

The vehicle has been making this electrical noise inside the vehicle. The vehicle upon accelerating, would hesitate to go then jerk. The vehicle was inspected by a mechanic technician. It was suggested that the vehicle tcm be replaced. It was replaced and the jerking still exist. The vehicle out of nowhere started having these unexpected electrical issues. This caused the cooling system fan to not work. I ordered a new cooling system fan and had it replaced/installed. However, these issues along with other safety concerning issues have continued to occur. This vehicle can cause significant serious injury or injuries to the owner or others. The vehicle would lock up occasionally. This model Jeep (2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland 5. 7l) has some safety concerns. This need to be fixed immediately before it cause catastrophic damages/injuries to others.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2024

1) the valve body-electrical 2) my car stopped in the middle of the road the while driving with my kids. When I placed car in park it would not go back in drive, but the dash kept blinking that the car was in drive. The issue prevented me from turning the car off so I had to unplug the battery to ensure the battery wouldnt die. 3)the problem has been confirmed by a dealer 4) vehicle hasnt been inspected by police or insurance rep 5)no warnings or symptoms prior to the problem.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2024

I am driving on the highway and my vehicle goes into neutral on its own it’s very dangerous and almost caused an accident from what I was reading there was a recall for the software for the transmission this happened quite a few times and needs fixing.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2024

My youngest son was away at college, using the vehicle to go to and from class. He was driving the Jeep home for summer break when suddenly, the wipers turned on and the dashboard warning lights lit up the dash like a christmas tree. He did not know what to do, who would? then the dashboard went completely black. He tried turning off the wipers and then suddenly the car shifted into park in the middle of traffic all on its own, with cars on both sides. He was fortunate that he was not rear-ended and severely injured. My son is a cautious driver, as he fears any accident that could end his athletic career. He pulled over and turned the Jeep off and then on and things looked normal. No more flashing dash warning lights, so he continued down the road, hazard lights on, paying close attention to vehicles around him. The dashboard warning lights were flashing repeatedly, vehicle auto shifting itself, dash going completely black and vehicle stalling in moving traffic. . . This happened several times on his way home. What my son experienced on the road, has happened to me several times since. It is a very frightening and dangerous experience. I believe I have been grossly misled by Chrysler Jeep sales and continue to be misled about the soundness of my vehicle and the after reporting to the autonation (Chrysler Jeep) service department, the dangerous situation my family was in by driving my Jeep, I feel I was not dealt with fairly. Is this how they treat all customers or is it because I am latina and a woman? with a vehicle with so many recalls, so many complaints and so many investigations by the NHTSA, it is a wonder why it is still on the road. Those who know would say, because no one has died, yet. Should that be the accepted answer or response? should someone have to lose their life before this vehicle is taken off the road? please see my attached document. I urge you to do a thorough investigation of these serious safety issues. (cpu, modules have been ongoing issues.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2024

Vechicle returns to limp mode. Almost causing several accidents on interstate. Engine 3. 6. Variable valve timing enough Jeep at one time offered a longer warranty. Replaced cams, heads, phasers, oil pump, computer, timing chain, timing gears, over 9000. 00 parts and labor. Mopar parts very problematic with the varible timing valve train. After problems in timing was fixed, there now is a oil pressure problem. Master mechanic credentials worked on vechicle several time and hour to try to fix problems. Mechanic now say only way to make vechicle safe at this point is to put a new engine in. This will cost over 13000 dollars over the 9000. 00. I have already spent. Scariest part of this vechicle is when on a 70mph interstate and vechicle goes to a top speed of 40mph.

23 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2023

Our car was stopped and then engine started intermittently lunging forward for no reason. Rear ended the car in front of us and had to use the emergency brake to stop the car. Jeep corp sent an independent inspector to check the car but only shared the car was drivable and didn't say there was a problem. They wouldn't share the computer findings with us or the dealer, only that is was drivable. They also wouldn't allow the dealer to see the computer while it was being tested. The car is currently parked and we bought another car. Waiting for Jeep to cover replacing parts or do something to the Jeep before it has another accident.

24 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2023

The vehicle was running but in park. I was putting air in my tires and heard something. I looked towards the passenger front and seen smoke coming from up front. The air ride pump caught on fire and melted wires, hoses, and the inner fender cover. I was able to put it out quickly.

25 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2023

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would hesitate upon depression of the accelerator pedal. The contact also stated that the vehicle stalled with an unknown warning light illuminated. The vehicle had been taken to a dealer and an independent mechanic where several repairs were performed; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system) which she linked to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 138,000.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2023

My jgc 2014. I was on a 5 lane interstate in the far left lane when my car started decelerating at a speed of 64mph. As I was merging into the left emergency lane it switched into neutral gear. I then proceeded to stop and put the Jeep into park and turn it off. Prior to this incident my check engine light had just illuminated a month prior and I ran a diagnostic computer test and it returned stating it was an evap problem. I haven’t had any systems. So I was waiting on my first check to get it taking care of (meaning no gas smell in the cabin, no fuel leaks under vehicle, no bad gas mileage). So the police came to my rescue and helped me pull the emergency neutral pull in the middle console in order to get it off closer to the median so I wouldn’t get hit until I could get a tow. Well it wouldn’t turn over again. It sounded like I had a fuel pump problem but when I went to turn it on but not over I heard my fuel pump cut on. So no problems there! so my battery started running low in voltage so I charged it with a battery pack and it got around 13 v and I unplugged it . It’s a 14 v battery. Well I got my vehicle turned in the off position the emergency neutral gear unlocked and then my windshield wipers started and the car was not on . I heard clicking in the fuse part under the hood so I found that fuse and pulled it. I think took a fuse checker and checked every fuse in my box they all had fire. On my dash it started saying system brake suspension and the check engine light was off. So I checked it with the computer diagnostic tester and it said a code of all u’s which were the ecu and the tcm and the gear shifter which was the only p. O. Code. So we took my gear shift off and cleaned it and hooked it back up. It was nasty. And it would slap again but not show on my dashboard. So I reset my battery and nothing. I am so upset about this. I’ve worked on every vehicle I’ve owned and this is mind boggling. Everything is up to date and seems fine.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2023

Car shut down and engine stalled while driving. I coasted to a stop in the middle of traffic. Car would not restart. Had to get towed home. There are two open recalls on this vehicle- one for fuel pump and one for tone wheel. The dealers say they can’t fix it because no parts are available. This is unacceptable. One recall has been issued over a year ago. This is my primary vehicle. I have already had to borrow a family members vehicle for weeks now. I cannot wait months hoping for parts to become available. I need recall work to be performed now or at least a temporary fix to get me back on the road.

28 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2023

The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle suddenly shifted into neutral and lost motive power. The contact received police assistance when the vehicle failed to immediately restart. The contact was then able to pull the vehicle to the shoulder of the roadway. The transmission and check engine warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to determine the cause of the failure due to a lack of power. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 18v332000 (electrical system, vehicle speed control) for which the VIN was included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 176,000.

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2023

Started the car and heard a high pitched whining coming from engine compartment. Reversed the vehicle about 20-25 feet and smelled burning rubber and then smoke started coming from the engine compartment. Turned off the vehicle and opened the hood, and saw that smoke was coming from the alternator. The alternator continued to smoke for approximately 15-20 minutes. We had the vehicle towed to a mechanic as it was completely inoperable at this point, and we had to have the alternator and battery replaced, as well as a wiring harness. The replaced alternator was shown to us by the mechanic and it was black and melted in spots. This seems related to NHTSA safety recall t36/NHTSA 17v-435, but NHTSA site is showing no open recalls for the vehicle and Chrysler insists the vehicle is not under any recalls.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2023

The left bank intake camshaft and roller rockers have failed. It has cause the check engine light to come on and go off reading a misfire in cylinder 2. After costly repairs to coil packs and plugs, Chrysler is now going to replace with a cost of $1,900. 00. This is the same issue in the 2013 Jeep that Chrysler extended the warranty on and won’t do it now on this year model.

31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2023

My 2014 Jeep cheroke limited stopped working without any prior warning. I was driving on the highway with my company children. I was going at a speed of 65 miles per hour, when it began to fail in a life, first I noticed the air conditioning stopped working, then I slowed down and stopped accelerating, I noticed that the speed changes suddenly began to change from drive ( d) to neutral (n), and I got a picture on the dash saying I needed to check my transmission. So what I wanted was to get off the road because I was afraid that my three children were with me and I was afraid that something bad would happen, but the bad thing is that I couldn't stop, because there wasn't enough and safe space where I could stop the truck. And many cars came behind me. So I went about a half mile and was able to get off the road. It was when my truck stopped hard and put itself in neutral (n) and didn't want to go any further. The air conditioning did not want to work either. When I got off and checked it, I noticed that my truck had oil in the back. So all I thought of was calling my husband and he went to the place where we were to pick us up. The weirdest thing that happened to me was that I never had any warning on the dash before until it started to go bad that day. My husband had checked the truck out because I was going out of state. He always did the corresponding checkups and oil changes because that is the truck that we used for my children and I. The next day we returned for the truck and took it in a trailer to the mechanic to find out what had happened and he said that the transmission did not work, that that happens in these 2014 trucks. My question is what can I do? I want to fix my truck because it's the one I take my kids to school in but I'm afraid it's going to break down again. I began to investigate further and saw that I am not the only one to whom this has happened. Even a CO-worker of my husband's went through the same situation as me.

The contact owned a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist. Additionally, while the transmission was shifted into neutral (n), the vehicle stalled, causing the contact to crash into a tree. The contact sustained injuries, and medical attention was received. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The vehicle was deemed totaled by the insurance company. Additionally, the contact stated that when he turned off the ac, the vehicle would shut off. The contact stated that while the transmission was shifted into drive (d) it inadvertently shifted into neutral (n). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 99,000.

34 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2023

I have to keep replacing my engine oil housing filter. I do believe I was sold a faulty engine from carvana after I was told it was inspected thoroughly. The car isn't even at 70,000 and I've had more repairs on it than I could imagine. The engine light keeps coming on and if I have to replace the entire engine that will be up to 10,000.
