I purchased my Grand Cherokee with 30k miles. Before I even made my first payment, the transmission was replaced through manufacturers warranty. Days after driving it off the lot, it would slam down through gears during deceleration and jump/jerk when shifting up. A loud metal thud accompanied these jolts between gears every time. Fast forward to today, and 25k miles later (Jeep has 55k total) and this problem appears to be returning. Random jolts and jerky shifts during acceleration and deceleration, specifically when going up or down a slope or when getting back on the gas to accelerate when driving. The deceleration and downshift between gears is so jarring sometimes when slowing down that myself and passengers will have our heads bang forward and seatbelt catch the weight of our bodies. The thud noise is coming back randomly as well when this happens. With only 5k miles left on manufacturer power train warranty, I'm nervous that having it's 3rd transmission in less than 60k miles is going to be a future problem again not covered by warranty. I feel very unsafe when driving what was supposed to be my dream vehicle and the largest loan in my life other than purchase of house. Since the day I left the lot it has felt uncomfortable driving and causes me anxiety because of the way it shifts and makes noises. The hard jerks and slamming downshifts have almost caused multiple accidents and I honestly hate having to drive this vehicle. (I have only owned it for 16 months. ) the date I selected was when I purchased vehicle, problem has been ongoing since then.
After owning my Jeep Grand Cherokee for about 6 months I was driving on the highway and my car would not accelerate faster than 40 mph, the rpms were going up but no matter how hard I pressed on the gas the car would not go any faster. I took it to the dealership and was told it was a computer issue and they reprogrammed the computer. Again a few months later the car did the same thing while driving on the street, not accelerating faster than about 20mph and the rpms going up. The car also started downshifting hard when coming to a stop. Once I started driving after coming to a stop the car also felt like it was shifting hard into gear. I brought the car back to the dealership and again the complaint could not be duplicated. So a computer update was done again and the problem seemed ok for a few months again. The problem is not a constant one so duplicating it will be hard. It is random and does not seem to happen at any specific time. It happened twice while I was on the highway and is a safety issue if I can not accelerate, especially when I am changing lanes. In total I have brought my car in 4 times within 2 years for the same problem. Once or twice I was told that they did feel the hard shifting when coming to a stop or accelerating after stopping but all that was done was a computer update. My fear is having an accident on the highway if I can not accelerate. Sometimes when coming to a stop it shifts so hard it almost sounds like a hard popping noise. At this point I do not know what to do, my car has 25,000 and is now 26 months old, the warranty will expire in about 10 mos or 36,000 and then I am sure the problem will be found & it will probably be the transmission and cost me several thousand dollars!! I contacted Jeep corp office 800-992-1997 and was told try to open a starcase so the "special mechanics" can look at it, why aren't all the mech special??.
