37 Brake Light problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/01/2007

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has 2 potentially dangerous issues with it. Due to a manufacturers design flaw, the brake lights malfunction on a regular basis. The light shorts itself out when the headlights are turned on leaving me with no brakes at night. In addition, the door lock actuator in my rear passenger door has broken. Since Jeep saw fit to only provide a key on the drivers door, this rear door neither locks nor unlocks which would result in a potentially lifethreatening situation if I were involved in a wreck and was unable to exit the vehicle from this door. My cooling fan broke, I replaced with a non-oem model which chewed a hole in my radiator after 100 miles. Replaced radiator and fan. Radiator broke after a year, re-replaced. After searching online I found that these are fairly common problems and not the result of some action on my part.

38 Brake Light problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/17/2007

Replace left side brake light bulbs 3 times in two months. Then took it to the dealership and had them repair it three more times before the electrical problem behind it was found and repaired correctly. I could have been pulled over with as many times the brake lights were not operating or been rear ended and injured as a result of the bad system Chrysler had.

39 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/13/2007

To whom it may concern, I am writing to you about a two serious safety issues with my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. First, the door locks are all starting to fail. Without warning they fail to operate and you can not unlock them. This is a serious safety issue if a rescue worker can not get into my vehicle to rescue my children. Second the rear brake lights continue to fail intermediately. This could cause a grave accident killing me or my children in my vehicle. I have talk to twenty to thirty Jeep owners of this same model and approximate year and they all have the same problems. . Read more...

40 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/19/2006

About every year the taillight/brake light sockets corrode and the lights quit functioning. Cleaning them solves the problem. We live in phoenix area and so moisture is not a factor.

41 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/26/2006

Failure of brakes lights, tail lights when checked were due to over heated power strips in my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Could cause fire and now have to replace both strips at 200$ each plus 150$ labor-this is all from poor design the light bulbs plug into a black power strip that actually heats up from the bulbs melting the power strip-causing lights to not work-bulbs still work when tested, but due to melting of the black strip the connection doesn't work. Dealer does nothing but charge us to fix. Consumer paying for bad design, not over usage or any other problem.

42 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/01/2006

The contact owns a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the brake light bulb would overheat the housing and melted the area where the circuit board was located. The failure recurred intermittently on both the passenger and driver sides. The dealer advised the contact that the housing was causing the failure and did not provide a remedy besides replacing the housing, which the contact stated was done twice prior to the recent failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, did not offer any assistance. The current mileage was 198,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

43 Brake Light problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/17/2006

Left rear brake light dims and goes out at night when lights are on when I brake or while I am driving with lights on during the day when I brake. I have had the bulb looked at and changed 4 times now. Each time I am assured the problem is fixed. I had it changed again 2 weeks ago and I am now experiencing the same problem.

44 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/10/2005

I would like to report a defect in 1999- 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee rear brake lights. 90% of all of the stated models will have failure of the brake lights due to a design flaw in the contact and locking mechanism that keeps the bulb locked in place. I have replaced the bulb and the rear light assembly only to have the same thing happen again. When the headlights are on and the brakes are applied the rear brake light or lights will fail to light up because the defective locking mechanism won't allow the electrical current to make to that particular bulb. This causes an increase risk of these SUV's being hit from behind because the lights are not working properly. I have seen numerous other models with the same problem and it is almost laughable. But on a serious note when driving on dark and hilly roads making sure the brake lights are working effectively could save someone from being hurt.

45 Brake Light problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/06/2005

Tail light/brake light assembly on both driver and passenger side failed leaving only center brake light working when head lights are on. Passenger taillight/brake light failed completely. Both tail light assemblies needed to be replaced as part of circuit board was melted.

46 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/01/2005

- the contact stated that the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee had a number of problems. The vehicle had problems with the brake rotors since 2005. He had to replace the rotors on 2 occasions since he purchased the vehicle in 2003. The contact had been informed that he needed to have the rotors replaced again. Also, the contact has been having problems with the driver's side door locks. When hitting the unlock remote control to unlock the doors the vehicle did not unlock. On some occasions while in the vehicle and trying to unlock the doors from inside the doors did not unlock. A number of times he's had to get out the vehicle from the passenger side door. In addition, tail lights are malfunctioed. The socket that held the bulbs did not work properly. He stated that his brake lights and his reverse lights have failed. He had to glue the plastic sockets together, and on the last time he needed repairs for the socket, he had to rig them up to work. Finally the contact had to replace the brake and back up lights. The failure mileage was 80,000, and the current mileage was 100,000.

47 Brake Light problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/20/2005

Defective design of tail and brake lights. Failure of weld to make contact so that the tail and brake lights worked. This problem occurred approximately 3 years ago. Numerous repairs were made by auto mechanics, however, they wouldn't last. Had both tail/brake light assemblies replaced at my cost of $243. 96 just for the parts. The dealer where the parts were purchased said that they were not even making those parts for my year vehicle because they were defective, and "junk" so I had to purchase later model year parts. I currently have the old parts available for inspection.

48 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

Driver's side turn signal and brake light go out when brakes are applied. Turn signal works when brake is not applied. Brake light typically works when turn signal is not on. Have replaced light bulbs on several occasions. Obviously not the problem. . . And after reading some of the complaints I see that this is common and is not related to the bulbs at all so I will stop wasting my money on bulbs!.

49 Brake Light problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/19/2005

Rear left brake light failing, rear tail light is fading when hitting brakes and turns off at night when the lights are turned on as if it is shorting out. I have seen several other Jeeps with the exact same problem.

50 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

The vehicle brake lights keep going out. One goes out, then eventually the other one goes out. We have changed both light assembly and bulbs; they last for a while then, eventually goes out again. This problem is compounded by the inconvenience of being pulled over for the problem multiple times and not to mention a huge safety factor. The expense to replace the light components/and or repair has been in the thousands of dollars over time. The last time we had it in for a repair they changed the harness assembly and the repair shop said that this is a very common problem with Jeeps of this era.

51 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/08/2004

The contact stated every time it rained the tail lights and brake lights shorted out. The bulbs have been replaced four times. The dealer replaced the wiring harness. The problem recurred. The spare tire storage area kept filling up with water.

52 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/01/2004

Left brake light on Jeep Grand Cherokee defective. . . Nature of defect: taillights remain operable until foot brake is depressed. When brake is depressed, the left brake light turns off only allowing the right brake light to illuminate. Upon release of the foot brake, the tail lights return to operation. Attempts to repair this defect have been unsuccessful by me and firestone. I have noticed over twenty other models similar to mine with this same defect.

53 Brake Light problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/24/2004

Tl- the contact owns a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The contact stated that the tail and brake lights failed to function. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the sockets and bulbs were replaced but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in the manufacturer's recall. The failure mileage was 53,000 and the current mileage was 156,000. Kmj.

54 Brake Light problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 01/07/2002

I have owned a Jeep for 3 years. Since I have purchased the Jeep I have had nothing but problems. The rotors went bad, the steering manifold went bad, the engine went bad, and the motor in the window went bad and broke. Now I have replaced my left rear brake light six or seven times. It slowly started to fade out, and now the entire light goes out at night when our lights are turned on and we have to depress the brake. It is also barely noticeable during the day. We thought we had a faulty wire, but when we took it to a shop to have them look at it, they said that in every Jeep that has been brought in with the same problem has been the entire light and casing. The bulb gets too hot and warps the casing that holds the light. So the light no longer touches the casing and will no longer work. They told us also that our right rear light is warping also, so both of them need to be replaced. Shouldn't this be a recall, since it is happening to so many Jeeps. And shouldn't it be a recall since they have a rebuilt one knowing the old ones are no good? I don't like it , I don't like knowing my tail lights are getting so hot that it is melting the casing. Could you please let me know about this!.

55 Brake Light problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The rear brake lights have failed 6 times. Nlm.
