36 Fuel Pump problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/20/2011

Just finished repairing daughter in laws vehicle. A 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. She complained of extreme gas fumes inside her vehicle. With a 1 year old and a 3 year old being transported in vehicle immediate attention was required. This is what I found. The ordinary steel fuel pressure connecter (disconnect) at top of fuel pump was completely rusted through and squirting a stream of gas, via rusted out pinhole, under pressure, all over top of fuel tank and surrounding area. Thank god no ignition resulted, would have been catastrophic. Connecter should have been either stainless steel or at least plastic at such an important location. Plain steel should never be used at such an important location. As there are many many thousands of this year vehicles out there this is a ticking time bomb. Even my vintage 1991 Ford pickup used stainless steel at gas tank fittings. Vehicle is second car and was purchased a few years ago. Body is remarkable rust free for a salty n. Y. S, vehicle. And is in good condition other than dangerous gas tank issue. It is only a question of time before a dangerous fire will occur in someone's vehicle and hopefully no one will die. This issue needs ,and must,be addressed . Have attached photo of rusted disconnect and have retained the rusted connector. Hope I did not waste my time with this important information and will expect a timely reply, yours, ben urgan. ---urganb@aol. Com--- phone,315 8655932. Address, 9545 luke rd. ,marcy,n. Y. ,13403 p. S. Connecter was so severely rusted and frozen to fuel pump outlet it had to slotted with a cutoff wheel to remove- a very hazardous procedure. (can not attach photo on this site).

37 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/29/2011

I have been getting the run around form customer service at Chrysler. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and was planning on buying another. But>>> comments: --------- my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4l engine stalls when turning left if the fuel level in the tank is below 1/4. The VIN number is; 1j4g248s8yc343973 this is very dangerous, and could cause a serious accident if I am not able to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. Last week I had the local dealer check the vehicle. They said if it were the sensing unit in the gas tank, it would be covered under a recall. They said it was the fuel pump itself, not the sensor, and therefore, I would have to pay around $1000. 00 to have the fuel pump replaced. There is nothing wrong with the pump, there is something wrong with the pickup device whenthe tank level drops below 1/4, and this happens over a period of time. I have checked several web sites and found quite a number of people complaining about the same situation. I called Chrysler today at 1-800-992-1997 and was told I would have to speak with customer service at 1-800-853-1403. When I called this number I spoke to a representitive and I explained what the problem was and I was told the vehicle was too old for them to do anything about it. I asked to speak to his superior, and was denied a name. When I asked for a name, she asked "is anything else I can help you with and told me thanks for calling. This is not an anomaly with my 2000 Jeep grand cherokee, according to the sites I visited, this occurs from 95 and on intothe 2000 (s) Jeep. The Jeep died on my on a busy highway at 1/4 tank and I could not get out of the was of traffic in speeds of 70+mph. I thought I was going to die getting my vehicle to the shoulder of the road. This defect can cause death.

38 Fuel Pump problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 10/27/2010

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee that stalls. Hot or cold, night or day, idling at a light or going 75mph down the interstate. I have had the fuel pump replaced, the fuel system cleaned, the O2 sensor replaces, the water pump replaced, the crank sensor replaced, the map sensor replaced, and the ignition coil replaced (I do still have the old ignition coil). It's in the shop now, and after doing some online research, I have found hundreds of people having the same problem, most of them being charged an outrageous amount of money by Jeep dealers who, ultimately, do not fix the problem. I would not be so concerned, but like many Jeep owners, I have small children. The problem started almost a year ago, happens daily, and if it should happen on a busy road or highway when I am going 60+mph, I am concerned about my safety and that of my kids.

39 Fuel Pump problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/21/2010

Driving on highway, Jeep stops! stopping at light, Jeep stops-will not start unless jump start, this goes on and on consistanly for 10 months, within those months I replaced:fuel pump(2's)(4 mufflers-gas keep leaking into muffler and blow up)(fortunate to be alive!)catalic converter ,water pump, crank censor, map censor, oxygen censor, ignition rotor, distributor cap/magnet,engine tune-up,transmission tune-up,oil change,:any and everything, after about $2000 I was ready to call it quits, it all centered around the (((fuel pump))) I was stopped and told I had gas leaking out as I was driving, being light headed from fumes???.

40 Fuel Pump problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

My vehicle stalls when it is hot outside. I have had the coil replaced then I had the catalytic converter replaced and O2 sensor and it still stalled on start up. I took it to the dealership and it stalled and they told me it was my fuel pump. I spent 965 on a fuel pump I didn't need because it is still stalling and they have no clue why. I seen this problem on mean forums. I think the dealer should be aware of this problem and should know how to fix them not make someone spend a thousand dollars on a might.

41 Fuel Pump problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/10/2009

The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. While driving various speeds, the vehicle stalls without warning. Upon further inspection, the contact concluded that the fuel pump and regulator were the causes of the failure. The vehicle has not been repaired. The dealer stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 06e011000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump); therefore, they would not assume responsibility for any repairs. The failure and current mileages were 102,000.

42 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/02/2009

The contact owns a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo. The contact noticed a fuel leak when fueling the gas tank. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire. He contacted the dealer and a technician stated that because his VIN number was excluded from recall# 06e011000 (fuelsystem, gasoline: delivery: fuel pump), he was ineligible for a free remedy. The vehicle has not been repaired. The current and the failure mileages were 148,049.

43 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/10/2008

Longer than normal cranking time due to a worn o-ring in the fuel module assembly or by plastic contaminant entering the fuel pump. Technical service bulletin #14-06-00 (provided by service garage).

44 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/13/2007

Fuel pump failures, first one failed at 35,000 miles, the second at 42,000 miles, and now the third at 71,000 miles. Towing charges, rental cars etc. Chrysler customer service would only quote the warranty was expired-12,000miles/or 12 months. This time my cost is $724. 00 for a new pump, $200. 00 for rental, and $68. 00 for towing. Three fuel pumps in 71,000 miles is ridiculous and frustrating. No more Chrysler products for me.

45 Fuel Pump problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/15/2007

We have a used 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which we have only owned it for about 5-6 months and we are having problems with the fuel system/pump. We notice a recall on 1997-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee in Jan/Feb 2006 on the problem that we are having with the vehicle, but when we contact the Chrysler corp. We were told that our particular vehicle wasn't part of the recall. On the page that I receive the info on the recall thru NHTSA. Gov, it didn't specify which one, it just states 1997-2004, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep wrangler, so we need to make sure that Chrysler is not trying to take advantage of the situation and not repair the vehicle. How is it that our vehicle is having the same problem as the ones that is under the recall. I spoke with two representatives at Chrysler and I was told that the vehicle that we owned had a fuel pump replaced in 2000 and I'm not sure if that's true, because the recall wasn't until last year.

47 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/14/2006

Tie rods, wheel bearings, ball joints, fan clutch, shorted engine compartment wiring harness, fuel pump assembly all gone wrong from time of purchase; January 2000/brand new to sept. 2006. . . Some pd. Under warranty others after 2004 not; even though the defects usually do not happen to a Jeep Grand Cherokee/fully loaded. The last straw was the ball joints; we asked if some form of recall should of been done and then asked for a reimbursement because my wife's' 2004 Jeep liberty limited had a recall on it's ball joints/lower ones so after having mine replaced last Friday 9/15/2006 we asked about the Grand Cherokee and it's ball joints; we also updated on all the defects we've had to correct and wondered if it wasn't a expensive lemon. . . $35,000. 00 is what I paid. We called Chrysler main customer service and was only told were sorry, the age of the Jeep and past warranty. . . What does that have to do with all the past defects since 2000 and the fact we tried their customer service in 2002 and got no where again. No matter the age of the vehicle. . . Safety is safety. And if ball joints go bad for no reason and have to be replaced then, it should go as a safety concern for all their vehicles.

48 Fuel Pump problem of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/15/2006

: the contact stated while driving 55 mph the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was maneuvered off the road and towed to an independent repair shop who determined the gas sending unit was inoperable. There was a NHTSA recall, # 97v194002, regarding the fuel level sending unit. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN. Updated 11/03/06.

49 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/24/2006

Vehicle had approximately 50,000 miles when engine service light came on. Took vehicle to dealer who noticed gasoline leaking on the ground under the gas tank. Gas tank was removed and dealer found that the o-ring sealing the fuel pump to the gas tank had slipped allowing gas to leak out when the tank was full. The service rep said I was very lucky that nothing had ignited the leaking fuel.

50 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/14/2006

The contact stated that the vehicle consistently stalled and leaked gas. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where they determined the gas leak was caused by the fuel pump. The fuel pump was replaced however gas continued to leak. On 07/13/06 the vehicle was taken to the independent repair shop for the stalling problems and the gas leak. The mechanic determined there was a blown fuse which causing the vehicle to stall. The the fuse was replaced and tighten. While stopped in the dealer parking lot with the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle lunged forward accelerating and almost hitting a pedestrian. The mechanic test drove the vehicle and was unable to make the involuntariy acceleration reappear. The vehicle continues to stall and leak gas.

51 Fuel Pump problem of the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/13/2006

: the contact stated while driving 35 mph through an intersection on normal road conditions, the engine stalled and could not be restarted. There were no warning lights prior to the incident. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, who diagnosed a fuel pump and fuel injection pump failure, both were replaced. After this incident, the vehicle presented transmission problems. The contact noticed a loss of power while driving 65 mph on a highway. Intermittently, the transmission made noise when shifted to second gear. The vehicle had been taken to the dealership 20 times, however no error codes identified the defect. In one of the incidents, the yellow malfunction light illuminated and the dealership identified the defect as the computer control module and the driver shaft, both were replaced, however the transmission problem persisted. The dealership determined the vehicle could not be repaired. The manufacturer was contacted who recommended to take the vehicle to a different dealership. The vehicle was not downshifting when going up hills and it would get stuck in second or third gear. The a/c and blower motor were inoperative, the dealer could not duplicate the consumers concern. The key became stuck in the ignition. All the dashboard lights were flashing, the cd player was broke. The brakes and rotors vibrated. The starter was replaced. The driveshaft and heater were replaced. The seats would not move back. The seat belts did not retract as they should. Updated 01/17/07. Updated.

Failure Date: 02/27/2006

: the contact stated while driving at no particular speed, the vehicle lost power and stalled. The vehicle would immediately restart and operate normal. The vehicle was inspected by the dealer, they determined the cause of the problem was the fuel pump. There is a NHTSA recall, # 06e011000, regarding the fuel pump. 54 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/24/2005

The o-rings in the fuel pump have apparently failed according to huffines Jeep in plano, TX. They have told me that a technical service bulletin has been issued for the o-rings since 1999. I do not feel I should have to pay for the repairs of an obviously faulty part. My vehicle only has 65,000 miles on it.

55 Fuel Pump problem of the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 03/21/2005

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo, manufactured 8-2001. In November 2004, the car began to have a hard start to it. The longer the car sat, the longer it took to start it. Sometimes the cranking went on for about 10 seconds. It would do this for 2-3 weeks and then stop for 2-3 weeks and then repeat the cycle. The check engine light came on and the mesage was 341: meaning camshaft sensor malfunction. It is involved in relaying power to the engine and, if it failed, could result in loss of power while in motion. I spent $220 to have it fixed. However, the hard start still continued. I went to a Jeep dealership where they told me, without a doubt, that it was the fuel pump. I asked them how in 3 minutes they could know that. They told me that there has been a really high failure rate of the fuel pump model which was installed in my car. They told me that it has been a persistent problem in Grand Cherokees in years 1999-2003. I asked why they had not issued a recall or investigatioin and the service assistant told me that the cost to replace these fuel pumps would be exhorbitant if done across a mass scale. However, he was more than happy to give me a $550 bill to have the fuel pump replaced. I had no choice but to pay it because, at some point, it would fail altogether resulting in an inoperable vehicle. My complaint is this: if they are aware of a serious fuel system failure that is widespread and they refuse to publicly acknowledge this fuel system failure, is there something that NHTSA can do? I also want to report this fuel system failure in this complaint.

56 Fuel Pump problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/21/2004

Just over a year ago, my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo encountered a defective fuel pump. As I was in the process of procuring a replacement pump, a friend told me to check for recalls/TSB's on it as he had experienced many fuel pump problems with these. There were, I believe two TSB's involving my vehicle so I called Chrysler. They told me to take the vehicle to the dealership to determine if the problem was the pump. I told her I had already done that. She told me that they had to determine it and if it was the pump, Chrysler would cover the repair. I had it towed to Chrysler ($65) and they indeed found it was a defective fuel pump and replaced it and I was charged over $600 for the repair. After the fact, Chrysler declined to pay for what they promised. I had found a replacement pump that I was prepared to install myself for $163 and had Chrysler been honest and declined to cover the repair, I would have accomplished it myself for $163 and been able to go on vacation to the outer banks instead of paying almost $700 and having to cancel my vacation. I have contacted , emailed, etc many people at Chrysler to no avail. I have since learned that when you deal with Chrysler, you better get it in writing! please help if you can!.

57 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/05/2004

Jeep Grand Cherokee fuel pump failure. It is difficult to start. Often you have to turn the key on and off 3-5 times before you attempt to crank over the engine. This will build enough pressure in the tank to get it started. The other method you must use is to turn the engine over for 5-10 seconds, and it will never start doing this the first time, but then when you let off the key for 5 seconds, and start again, it will finally crank the engine over. This gets old, and is very difficult to explain when selling the vehicle. To top it off, the fuel pump is in the tank making it very labor intensive to fix. My ase certified mechanic says he has fixed several with this problem, and it is a wonder why this has never been recalled.

58 Fuel Pump problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/01/2004

99 Jeep Grand Cherokee with engine problems customer states that the rpm's would immediately go up to the 200 or sometimes higher as soon as he starts up the car and also accelerate when the brakes are applied* the consumer stated various parts were replaced, however the problem returned. The consumers wife was driving, when all of a sudden the vehicle started to accelerate on its own, she applied the brakes as hard as she could, however the vehicle continued to proceed in a forward motion. The only solution was to place the vehicle into park. After placing the vehicle in park, the consumers wife placed it in drive again and immediately it started to accelerate uncontrollably. Applying the brakes with full force did not solve the problem. When aaa arrived and started the vehicle, nothing happened. The sudden acceleration happened again while the consumers daughter was driving. During one of the sudden acceleration incidents, the consumers wife was injured. The right front wheel speed sensor was replaced. The coolant radiator fan relay and water pump were replaced. The air bag light was on, the transmission seal was leaking. The fuel pump was replaced. The right and left hub bearing were replaced.

60 Fuel Pump problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 12/12/2003

On December 12, 2003, for the second time in three years, the fuel pump on our Jeep failed. In discussing the failure with two different mechanics and then with our local Jeep dealer, I was advised that Jeep had determined that the gas tank for this vehicle is subject to corrosion whereby minute particles float in the tank and can travel into the fuel pump (the filter that Jeep puts in these cars is not designed to trap these small particles) causing the fuel pump to freeze. I was advised by the Jeep dealership that a TSB was issued in 1997 regarding this failure (I believe it is TSB 140697). I note that there are at least 42 reports of similar problems on your website. This is a safety problem that Jeep has refused to acknowledge or take any responsibility for.

61 Fuel Pump problem of the 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/22/2003

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee laredo 4x4 which has had 5 fuel pump modules and one gas tank replaced since 08. 10. 2000. The vehicle is in need of another fuel pump module. The dealers have difficulty in replicating the condition. The fuel gauge is providing false readings; typically giving an empty tank reading when full, 3/4 full or 3/4 empty. I have heard the same complaint from numerous other Grand Cherokee owners. I would think the maker/dealer would have spotted a trend by now or is overlooking it because of the cost involved with finding a new vendor. All receipt copies of work performed concerning this matter are intact.

62 Fuel Pump problem of the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/05/2003

Fuel pump failure. Causes loss of power or stall out during acceleration for passing, or while climbing steep grades. Occurs after vehicle warm-up, with low fuel tank (less than half tank), and often while making a turn.

63 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 07/01/2003

Vehicle has 24,292 miles and it will not start on first try. Long cranking time. Dealer says it needs new fuel pump module and will cost approx $500. 00! appears to be common problem from NHTSA other complaints. Dc refuses to fix and refuses to give me written notification why not. Only verbal refusals in spite of my writng them requesting written refusal and reason for no goodwill gesture on their part. Appears to be at least 3 tech svc bulletins about this same (long crank time) issue.

64 Fuel Pump problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/19/2003

Very hard to start. Have to give it a little gas to start. Rarely starts on first try. Dealer is replacing fuel pump/fuel tank o-ring. Fuel tank has to be drained to replace o-ring. O-ring is a $15 dollar part. Total bill to replace is $188. 90 including tax and labor. . . Ouch!! obviously fuel system is sucking air as a result of faulty o-ring. Vehicle only has 38,000 miles.

Consumer complained about a transfer case problem. When driving at approximately 40 mph there was a loud clanking sound coming from the front undercarriage. Consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was told the vehicle had dusty brake pads, but that was not the issue. Then, consumer was told that the constant velocity joints were leaking. Also, consumer was told that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. Consumer felt that the dealership did not know what the problem was, and perhaps was covering up the real problem. Recall campaign; component: fuel system, gasoline:fuel injection system:injectors. The consumer stated that the vehicle would not start. The consumer stated that the engine had an extended crank before starting. Fuel pump assembly and pump crank repair kit installed. The consumer stated that there is a shimmy when the brakes are applied. When sitting at a stop light having the vehicle in gear it vibrates. The left outer cv boot was leaking. I have been standed, and now am concerned what if I'm in a accident(rear end) if my tank is erroding isn't they a bigger chance of it exploding? I feel that daimler should replace the defected gas tanks,I know just in my area there are at least 4 other with the same problem. How many of us are riding around with defected gas tanks?.
