2 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/23/2015

Jeep accelerated without stepping on gas. Accelerator cable did not seem to operate smoothly, when applying, felt somewhat "rough/nothy" owner agreed to change as suggested. Cable changed total $477. 39 in 5/2010. This time car was towed to Jeep dealer. C. Stated Jeep accelerated on its own, towed in. Jan. 13,11 Jeep towed in to Jeep dealer for bucking and accelerating on its own, no issue was found. May 13,11 towed into Jeep dealer, changed several components and $1,074. 68, never had a definite answer, and after each incident took its toll on my nerves, scared to death to drive my Jeep, which I purchased to make our family safe. Fast forward, 11/23/2015 this Jeep once again started accelerating and racing in park and with the hand brake up. My Jeep has 64,k and is taken care of, looks great. But, once again I cannot risk putting my family or myself in it to drive. I have found numerous stories like this and some a lot worse. My instincts were to just shut the engine off and I did all4 times over the years. I am now on a fixed income and would love to be happy and keep this Jeep grand cheroee but, I can no longer take this chance. I would love to know how many people must die or how many accidents have to happen before Chrysler wakes up and recalls, I'm guessing they don't really know what to fix. I also had problems with my tail lights and had repairs several time, when I got a ticket after it was already fixed a few times I had to pay. Failed NJ inspection 1 time due to what they called a wig wag, which Jeeps are know for, who out there is on the consumers side, no one it appears. No recalls on this this but, they will get back to me on a passenger restraint module, maybe next year 2016, if we are lucky. All 4 times the vehicle was being driven and the only thing that worked was shutting off the engine using the key. My vehicle must be safe for grandchild.

3 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 08/06/2015

While driving the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee on cruise control, I needed to accelerate to avoid a traffic situation. I stepped on the accelerator and nothing. It did not engage to speed up even though I pushed the accelerator all the way to the floor. I removed my foot from the accelerator and stepped on it again, hoping it was a fluke, but still no acceleration. It did maintain the set cruise speed of 65 mph. It took approximately 15 to 20 seconds or more before the accelerator finally engaged. I had driven the vehicle earlier in the week for one 8 hour straight and two 3 hour straight trips with no issue. On this trip I had driven the vehicle for 5 hours prior to this event. Stopped and rested for about an hour and then proceeded to complete my trip. About 3 hours into this last leg is when this happened. It hasn't happened before or since (yet). I have previously reported to the dealership that there are many times a brief, second or second and one half delay from when I step on the accelerator before the accelerator engages. This is sporadic and doesn't seem to be a consistent problem. The salesman and the general manager indicated they haven't heard of this problem from other owners. I understood this is an inherent problem with the Toyota tundra and assumed it to be related to the electronic acceleration process as compared to the old cable acceleration linkage in years past. I had in fact updated the software related to the recent recall through the uconnect web site, at least a week before this event.

4 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 02/06/2010

Driving 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee ltd on service road of i75 in dallas. Normal road conditions and visibility. Sudden engine acceleration which could not be slowed by braking and shifting into neutral. To avoid a rear end collision, the Jeep crashed head-on through iron fencing and into trees. The airbags did not deploy. Car was deemed a total loss by the insurance company. I had the car inspected by master mechanics before it was taken off by the insurance company. Their report said that the "throttle cable linkage sleeve slid under the throttle body pivot causing the throttle to remain open. ".

5 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 09/14/2004

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The consumer stated the gas pedal broke while driving. The throttle cable that was attached to it broke. This caused an accident. The consumer ran into a brick wall, parked car, and a pole before the vehicle stopped. The brake would not stop the vehicle. The vehicle was then towed to the dealership. Chrysler will not tell the contact anything about why this happened. No one was injured the police were called, but they did not respond because it happened in a parking lot. The vehicle had been running normally prior to this accident. This occurred on September 14, 2004. The insurance company was the agency that found that the throttle cable broke. The insurance company still has the vehicle, but it was not totaled. Updated 11/29/05.

6 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 06/06/2004

(1) while traveling 70 mph while in cruise control accelerator pedal would not disengage when I a)tapped the brake, b)manually turned off the cruise control, and c)when I physically attempted to pull up on the accelerator pedal. The speed of the car increased steadily, nearing 90 mph, before I put the car in neutral, pressing both feet (full body weight) on the brakes and had the good fortune of many steep hills, was able to slow the car to 25 mph, allowing me to move to an off ramp and turning off the engine. The car was towed approximately 20 miles to the Jeep dealer who informed me that all that was wrong with my car was that there was a lot of carbon build-up around the accelerator cable, and that is why it stuck. They said that "we see this alot in Jeeps that are driven alot in the city". Unfortunately, this was not the case with my Jeep, which was regularly driven on the highway (~100 miles each weekend), as well as the fact that I had just driven from pittsburgh to indianapolis and was returning home when this occurred. Any carbon in my engine should have been removed through this much driving.

7 Speed Control Cable problem of the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 05/15/2004

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. In March of this year, while on the expressway, my cruise control caused my vehicle to accelerate and would not turn off even by hitting the break and pushing the off button numerous times. I was only able to stop the vehicle by putting the gear in nuetral and turning it off. I contacted the dealership who talked my through how to loosen a cable in the engine which apparently caused the cruise/accelerator to stick. I immediately took the vehicle into the dealership and even on my way there, the car would accelerate on it's own, without the cruise control being turned on. The dealership kept my car for the day and when they returned, they stated that they had repaired the problem. Two months later, I was leaving my parking space at work and my vehicle began to accelerate on it's own. I struck the break but the rear of the vehicle began to spin in circles and forced my vehicle to strike three other vehicle. Jeep conducted an investigation and they sent me a letter stating that they could not find a problem with the vehicle. I just wanted to send you this complaint to let you know that their findings were false and poorly researched. I have pictures of the tire marks and there is no way that this accident could have occurred other than by I high acceleration and my foot being on the break.

9 Speed Control Cable problem of the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Failure Date: 11/01/1999

Intermittent engine idle problem. Occurs when engine is fully warmed up and in gear and at a full stop. Engine idle speed will fluctuate between 300 & 600 rpm . When this happens, engine roughness is very noticable and on occassion it will stall. On the first visit to the dealer, the computer was reprogrammed as per a TSB. This did not solve the problem. Second visit, Chrysler advised the dealer to replace throttle position sensor. Again the problem still exists. The dealer has notified Chrysler and is still waiting for an answer.
