Jeep heating , took vehicle to the mechanic, and he said that the cooling fan was broken/frozen. The mechanic said there was a recall on Jeep cooling fans for my year of Jeep. I called the local dealer plus daimler-Chrysler, but they said the recall was for 4. 1l engines and my engine was a 4. 7l. Obviously, chryssler/daimler has a problem with the cooling fans on these Jeeps, but I didn't understand why my Jeep wasn't included in the recall. The mechanic had the NHTSA recall bullentin. Because of the heating problem, along with a safety issue, we had to pay to have the repair work done, $1206. 86. The part alone was over $900. 00 - the old part was currently available.

- the contact has a 2000 Jeep grand cherokee Laredo. The contact received a recall for this vehicle on 10/11/2006 and on September 1, 2006, several hours after having a full service check up for a broken b seat belt the contact was driving on the interstate at 75 mph and the electric radiator fan blade separated and went through the radiator. The contact stated that this caused the engine to overheat, cracking the engine's head, and seizing the engine. The contact stated that everything happened instantly, causing the vehicle to suddenly begin smoking and lose power, even thought the contact was accelerating. The contact stated that the steering column locked, and the vehicle was able to coast to a stop, and later had it towed. The contact stated that the weather was in the 100 degrees on that day. She paid $2100 to repair the vehicle , and that the dealership wanted to settle with her for $700.
On 8/25/06 we heard a loud pop under the hood and the Jeep started to overheat and stopped the car until it cooled down, checked the water levels. Called a mechanic to check it out and found that the blades from the fan were all gone and the radiator was dented and the fan shield was broken. I called the daimlerchrysler toll free number and was on hold 45 minutes each time I called, finally spoke to someone and was told we had to take it to a dealership to get a diagnosis in order to do an investigation.
Upon ignition, radiator fan exploded into pieces randomly. Found many many other instances of this incident, and all dealers and representatives of Chrysler deny any knowledge of the incident. 1. Purchased car used in February 2005. Fan broke off in July 2005. Ran air daily in summer, no problems, then one day it just made a popping noise. There were pieces of the plastic fan on the ground, and a piece still under the hood. 2. I have a warranty, but it does not cover this vehicle. It overheats if I idle too long because there is no fan. To purchase a fan shroud from a Jeep dealer costs $370-400, not including labor. 3. Have not replaced fan/fan shroud yet.
Engine over-heats when vehicle is sitting still and idling. The fan doesn't start when the temperature rises. This leads to excessive heat buildup and possible engine damage. The fan motor is being replaced for the second time and the control module for the third time. I have been told that the fan motor is drawing too much amperage. This is the third time this has happened in the past year.
Contact states: "fan burnout" also experiencing brake and water pump leakage. These problems occur only while driving long distances. Already repaired the fan out of pocket. Has yet to fix water pump leak or brake issue, a recurring problem .
