While driving on the interstate and preparing to exit, vehicle would not slow down or decelerate. I tried to apply the brakes in attempt to stop. Shifted into neutral in order to gain control. Rpm's immediatly shot up to 3000 and fluctuated between 3000 - 4000. Pulling to the side and looking under the hood to see if there was any obstruction in the accelerator linkage, there was not. I attempted to start the vehicle again 3 times with the same results. I let the vehicle cool for 1/2 hour ( temperature was in proper range ), normal operation was obtained. This the first ( and only episode ) I hope to experience. I am an experienced driver and was able to think quickly. Some others may not be so lucky. There is obviously a trend and problem here that Chrysler should deal with. After all I'm sure they dont want us to start buying other makes of vehicles.

Similar to recent gm problem, when driving, my knee touches the ignition switch, which then shuts down the engine. This has happened on multiple occasions and I have been able to safely steer the car to the roadside. I am concerned that, if this happens when my wife is driving, she would not have the strength to safely control the car.

My 2001 Jeep grand cherokee Laredo has been shutting off while I am driving and also sometimes it doesn't start properly. My mechanic doesn't know what is wrong with it. This is the second time he is looking at it. This has been going on for approximately three months. What really concerns me though is that it is just shutting off while I am driving. This defect may cause a serious accident while I am in traffic. I am scared to drive it cause it is happening everytime I drive it now. I did find out on the internet that there are other complaints out there and that the problem might be the front control module. I have called Chrysler to find out if that is really the problem. No one knows anything about this complaint at Chrysler. I just want answers so that I can get it fixed. I am really worried that I will be in an accident.

I too brought a Jeep cherokee from a used dealership in 2008, it is a 2000 4l 6i also, same issues, the week after I brought the car the engine blew, the dealer would not cover it because they sent it to their mechanic shop and of course the mechanic shop said it wasn't the dealers fault, they told me that a rock hit the fan and put a small hole in the engine. . . I spent close to 1200 getting the engine rebuilt. Car ran for a little while then the check coolant light kept coming on, I had to keep a bottle of coolant in my car and the coolant would run out every 2-3 weeks. Then in oct the engine blew again, my car is currently parked until I can find a low mileage engine to replace the old one. I do believe that this is a flaw in the design. Meanwhile I am still paying a car payment and having to work to get money to fix my car. . . Ughhhh.

On my way to work on Monday morning at around 5:15 am, smoke started to come out from my Jeep's hood on the drivers side. I turned around and proceed to head back home. Within four to five minutes the smoke turned into flames and the front of the car was on fire (on a local street). I jumped out from car and then called the police. Once firemen came they put out the fire. The Jeep is a total loss.

My 2003 Jeep grand cherokee Laredo started experiencing starting problems. I would get in the car and try to start it and it would be dead. This doesn't happen first thing in the morning. I can drive the car 5 miles, get out for 5 minutes, and when I start it again, it's dead. Usually I have to wait about 10 minutes. If I try to start it while I'm waiting, the gauges all go crazy, the radio goes to 12:00, and it won't start. Sometimes it cranks but doesn't turn over. When it does turn over, I have to keep my foot on the gas or else it dies on me. Sometimes happens while I'm driving also, the gauges go crazy and the car wants to die on me. So far I have had the battery terminals changed, the powertrain control module, the crankshaft position sensor, and the fuel pump. But it still does the same thing. It happens on a hit or miss basis. It could happen 2 days in a row, or it may not happen for 2 weeks. All I know is I have to cross my fingers while I try to start it, and while I drive it.

I own a 96 Jeep grand cherokee and about 6 weeks ago it began to cut off while driving, total loss of power. The Jeep has been in the shop off and on for these 6 weeks since the first incident, I have spent approx. $600 trying to rectify the problem, then I received a recall from Chrysler for a problem with the catalytic converter, so I took Jeep to local dealer to get repair done and they tell me that they are "95 % sure" that the converter is the problem with my Jeep cutting off. Now the complaint, they do not have the part to fix my Jeep. Dealer tells me he can only order one part a week and he's not sure that one is going to come in. Dealer tells me to call Chrysler. When I call Chrysler they tell me to call other local dealers to see if they have a part, well what do you think their answer is? yeah, I don't have one. My Jeep is not drivable and Chrysler doesn't want to do anything about it. Luckily, so far, there has not been any accidents. Two close calls, one nearly a head on collision, but no accidents yet. Can you help or direct me to someone who can. Thanks
joe fitzgerald.

I called the dealer about this notice and they told me that they would not be able to help me for another 6 weeks. I thought that this was too long to get my vehicle checked out, especially with this being a manufacturers defect.
I have a 2000 Jeep grand cherokee. I have an anti-freeze leak. I have had it fixed twice. I wish I could tell you what was done but I know very little about cars. I am currently having the problem again. I went on the internet to find out what it could be but all I found was a large number of people who have sunk tons of money into fixing the problem on their 2000 Jeep grand cherokees. I am currently adding anti-freeze daily.
