1 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/27/2019

I have my brother's 2005 Jeep Liberty with less than 100,000 miles. It is a very important vehicle to me as he passed from cancer. To date I have filled the car 3x and every time I get a gas gusher coming out of the tank. The last time I was extra careful and still ended up getting gas all over the car and myself. Now I try to estimate gallons so it doesn't spray out and I stand off to the side. 600. 00 is a lot of money to spend for a new fuel neck replacement. Obviously not everyone is reporting this as they are trying to fix it themselves. Try googling this on the internet. This is not a safe situation, although gas on the outside dissipates quite quickly. One spark and the gas station could be toast. I am very leery of Chrysler & Dodge gas tanks, thankfully my magnum which started acting up had a lifetime warranty on the fuel tank, which Dodge is not very quick to point out. My magnum just started dying after it was filled up, fixed now I hope. Hoping you can come up with a re-call for these Jeeps. Very disappointed in the fueling up issues.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2018

My car is always overflowing gas when I complete the fuel tank.

3 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2017

Fuel spills from tank during fill up. I bought this car used and the paint is damaged from the previous spills that have occurred. It is evident this has been a long standing issue with this vehicle.

4 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2017

When fueling, the gas tank sensor fails and causes the gas pump to not automatically stop and gas overflows. Luckily I was not standing too close when this happened. Also, upon stopping and ignition is off the seatbelt on the drivers side does not retract after unlatching and when getting out of the car the seatbelt gets stuck in the door.

5 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Liberty. After placing fuel in the vehicle, fuel spilled out. The dealer diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 31,000.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2016

My gas overflow every time I fill up my tank. This has been happening for a few years and I contacted Jeep and was told they would not do anything. This is a safety hazard and could cause a fire and something should be done I have spoken to several Jeep owners with this model and they are having the same problem.

7 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2016

Fuel overflows gas tank every time vehicle is filled with fuel.

8 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2016

Every time the gas tank is filled, gasoline overflows before the automatic fueling nozzle shutoff activates. Fuel runs down the side of the vehicle and onto the ground.

9 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2015

I own a 2005 Jeep Liberty that has been recalled due to the fuel tank has a chance of experiencing a fuel leak during certain types of rear end collisions. I have returned the vehicle to the dealer and was told that Chrysler does not have to make the repairs due to the car having a reconstructed title. I am checking with your agency to find out if that is the truth. I have had recall work done in the past without this issue arising.

10 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2015

Every time my wife or I fill up the gas tank, gas sprays everywhere as the auto-shut-off does not work. The gas tank over-fills every single time and gas spews everywhere, getting on me, down the side of my Jeep, and all over the ground. This is a major hazard and could ultimately end up in an explosion. To act as additional support, the fact that gas sprays everywhere is against the law that can be found on the stickers at every gas station gas pump for how to "operate" the gas pump and how to "fill-up" correctly. There needs to be a recall immediately as I know there are many other people who experience this same issue. Also, the only reason why I stated the problem began at 147,000 miles is because that was the mileage on the vehicle when I purchased it used.

11 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2014

For about the last 2 years, every time I fill the gas tank to full I get fuel spray. I thought it might be stations pump handle but it happens at any station all the time. I also received a safety recall for the hitch receiver. I took it into the dealer and they said no problem. I was under the impression from the notice that the aftermarket unit would be replaced with a factory unit. I purchased this vehicle used when it was 3 years old.

12 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2014

Every single time we fill up the car (no topping off), the gas shoots out of the tank back at us. We bought this used car for hoping it would be reliable, but this is a recurring dangerous problem. We lower the flow of fuel from the pump, but it still happens. Very dangerous! we have head that the plastic o ring swells with gasoline that contains ethanol and fails to cut the back flow off. The problem with this is, all pumps in our area contain at least 10% ethanol. What good is a car if you can't drive it?!.

13 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2014

I was sent a recall notice for my 2005 Jeep Liberty (n46 recall). After a long wait being told there were no parts available I finally got it into a dealer who told me they were unable to install the trailer hitch because of rust and that Chrysler states that it is a level 5 corrosion so they were unable to fix the problem. I find this very disturbing since there have been so many accidents with the gas tank exploding and burning the whole car on impacts, rollovers, etc. I feel very unsafe to drive this vehicle at this point and still feel that the dealer should be able to do something to fix this problem. . .

14 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

Received notice on n46 recall that hitch was available to install to take care of gas tank issue. Called local dealer lochmandy motors of elkhart indiana to set up date and time. I was told it was a class 2 hitch with a 2" receiver. I said I was removing my old hitch that was getting rusty . He said he had to order part and I will have to make the appointment when it came in. It came in and I made the appointment for install and again questioned the rating and received the same answer. I stopped in 3 days before my appointment to take a look at the hitch and I was shown the hitch and was told it is not meant to be used to tow. I questioned this and was told he knows I tow and and long as I do not try to tow as big as a house like some people do, then I should be fine. I was again told it was a class 2 and we both mentioned we see the 2" receiver. On day of install I called Chrysler main office directly to find out the ratings and they said "no" it not meant to be used to tow and it is just structural. She said the dealer knows this and they have a tag they place on the hitch after install stating this and I must sign off on this. At the time I looked at the hitch at the dealer before install he said there is no tag and 1 will placed on it after install. I called lochmandy motors right back and told them to remove it from my Jeep. The public and NHTSA are being mislead by Chrysler and the dealer and some one is going to get hurt trying to tow with this unit. How many people with disregard the label or have it removed and then the next owner pays the price. Chrysler knows this will happen. I will again have to spend money for an aftermarket part to fix a Chrysler fatal death issue.

15 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2014

I am a fleet manager with the colorado department of transportation. We possess several of these recalled vehicles. The recall states that the fuel tank is vulnerable to fuel leakage in the event of a rear end collision. Chrysler's fix is to install a trailer hitch to serve as additional structural reinforcement. I received three recall notices some months ago. Those notices stated that at that time, Chrysler did not have sufficient parts to effect the repairs, but that they would contact us when the parts were in stock. We heard nothing from Chrysler, when I received notices for 15 more vehicles. I contacted cherry creek Dodge and was told that they had 5 hitches in stock. When my staff dropped off a vehicle for repair, they were told we would have to take them to colorado Chrysler going forward. I called colorado Chrysler to see if they had parts. I was told they did not, and they did not expect to see any until the end of October. They said they were not permitted to order any, and that they were limited to an automatic replenishment of 5 hitches per month. Needless to say, this is ridiculous. These vehicles have a safety issue, and the Chrysler dealers are dragging their feet on repairing them. Meanwhile, I have employees driving unsafe vehicles. I suspect that since the newest vehicles affected by this recall are 7 years old, they are being cynical and betting that most of these vehicles will be off the road soon, so if they can drag out the process it will save them money. This is completely unacceptable!.

16 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

My Jeep has been on a waiting list for a year now for the fuel tank recall every time I call the dealership they say call us back in a couple months to see where we are on the list I don't feel it should take this long to be fixed.

17 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2014

I am complaining because like 2 years ago a recall was issued for my Jeep Liberty 2005, due to design defect of placing the fuel tank at the end of the vehicle. Supposed to be addressed by addition of a trailer hitch. I have heard nothing further in these 2 years. No notice of recall, no notice of how to get it worked on. How long can this be ignored by Chrysler? do they have any intention of abiding by the decision.

18 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2014

2year ago was told my daughters Jeep was not safe if hit from behind due to gas tank. They said they would install a receiver to block impact area . I keep getting the run around on when I can get it fixed.

19 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2014

21 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2014

I just registered a 2005 Jeep Liberty I went to the gas station to purchase gasoline. The fuel tank will not allow me to pump fuel into the tank. The fuel back lashes and shoot out of the tank. It took 20 minutes to pump 20. 00 worth of fuel at pumping . 50 cent worth at a time then allowing it to settle.

22 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2014

I would like to know if Chrysler/Jeep will be complying with the settlement of installing trailer hitches to protect the gas tanks on Jeep Liberty vehicles? how long do we have to wait and how many more injuries or deaths have to occur before this issue is resolved?.

23 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that she attempted to have her vehicle repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 13v252000 (fuel system, gasoline , structure) but was informed that the parts were not available. The contact felt that since the failure was reported in June of 2013, there should have been a remedy available before March of 2014. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable time for repair. The contact had not experienced the failure however stated that she was involved in a crash where her vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle. A police report was filed and the contact was taken to the hospital for treatment of back, head, and neck injuries. The contact was concerned that the fuel tank could possibly catch on a fire if involved in another rear-end crash. The failure mileage was not available. Updated 5/13/cn.

24 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2014

Hello my name is angel roque renta and I recently learned that my Jeep Liberty is up for a recall the letter from the dealer says the fuel tank on your vehicle has a small chance of experiencing a fuel leak during certain types of rear ends collisions. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in an underbody fire. I already went to the dealer and they say that they don't have the parts, that was on February and they haven't contact me. I don't speak english so please contact me in spanish. Thanks and have a good day.

25 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2014

When you go to fill the gas tank , it overflows constantly , you cannot just stick the nozzle in and let it fill normally, you have to let it go very slowly and even then it will try to overflow. I believe this is a safety hazard. I always have gas spilled out on the pavement and on me most of the time. After researching and reading online forums, I have noticed this is a common problem and that there is a lot of frustration in trying to get someone to listen to our complaints and actually having a solution to this problem. I have also written to Chrysler and haven't had any response. Took it Jeep to the dealership from which we purchased it , they said it wasn't under warranty and said to research online to fix the problem. Had I known of this problem when we purchased the car, I would not have purchased it.

26 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2014

I am writing in regards to the recall that was done about the gas tank/ trailer hitch recall. As of this date I have heard nothing since Chrysler sent me a letter stating that "the dealership would be in touch"! I sent them a copy of my receipt for the hitch I had installed and it stated it met federal guidelines. It seems that they received to many receipts and that at $300. A vehicle it was going to hurt! I see no need to take my vehicle into a dealership when I provided prove that my hitch was properly installed and met federal guidelines. I'd like to hear from you on this matter as Chrysler wants to drag this out as long as they can! thank you richard whittaker VIN: 1j4gl48k75w591753.

27 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2014

Pump does not shut off when gas tank is full. Results in gas spillage. Have tried twice to get it fixed. Dealer can't see anything wrong with it.

28 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

Received a recall noticed about the first of the year concerning the fuel tank. I have since had my Jeep in for a tune up twice and both times I have been told that they do not have the part in yet . And that the factory has not done anything about replacement parts. I keep calling and have been told the same thing from the parts department. . . Part not in, factory is not sending any parts. I purchased this vehicle brand new from a Jeep dealer and have only had my Jeep serviced from them in the past 9 years. . Does this warrant a complaint.

29 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2013

Each time I try to fill up the gas tank, the tank overflows and gas spews onto the ground, onto the pump, and all over the car.

30 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty sport I noticed couple years ago that every time I fill the gas tank up it does not shut the gas nozzle off and always back flows out and runs down the side of my Jeep. I thought the gas station issues until try multiples gas stations.

31 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2013

Starting back in August and continuing to this date, every time I put fuel into the Jeep it splashes out of the gas tank when full. Not just a little splash either! it pours out of the gas tank and down the side of the Jeep every time. I can somewhat control the splash by clicking off the gas pump handle at intermediate intervals and then going very slowly to put the last 2 to 3 gallons of gas in the tank, but this doesn't always work. When the tank is almost full it will start to spew out.

32 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

While refueling the vehicle for the first time after just purchasing it, fuel gushed out of the tank after the pumped had clicked off. The pump did not overfill the tank. Fuel splashed out onto the side of the vehicle and on the ground. Luckily, I was not directly beside the vehicle or fuel would have splashed on me. I thought this was a fault of the pump until I happened to see a video on utube of other people experiencing the exact problem. This is a design issue with this vehicle and needs to be corrected by the manufacturer.

33 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2013

Contacted dealer about n46/NHTSA. 13v-252 gas tank recall on 3/10/14 and dealer said they have no information on when parts are coming or how to handle recall. When will this take place. No action by Chrysler. I received the recall notice around the end of last year. It should not be taking this long. Are we waiting for more injuries for court cases or for Chrysler to hope most of the vehicles to be out of service? I can't believe I am the only one in this town of 55000 people with a Jeep.

34 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2013

I went to allen samuels about the gas tank and I did not get the hitch I needed. The advisor ryon said I needed a request from Chrysler. Help.

35 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2013

When I fuel up my 2005 Jeep Liberty there is no auto stop for gas fill up. If I try to fill tank all the way up the gas will squirt back at me, covering my vehicle, my clothing and my skin, seems very dangerous to drive after covered in gas. Iv only owned the Jeep a few months and this has happened many times, im very afraid to "top off" my tank and therefore my mpg is terrible, seems many people also have this issue, why has this not been a recall, seems to be a manufactuer problem, with gas prices these days and all the wasted gas due to this problem its also an expensive issue as well as dangerous.
