Seven problems related to other fuel system tank mounting have been reported for the 2005 Jeep Liberty. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2005 Jeep Liberty based on all problems reported for the 2005 Liberty.
The car does not shut off fueling when the gas tank is full, causing a large amount of gas to spew out of the car when filling gas every time. Causes gasoline to go everywhere, is a fire hazard. (it is not just a little bit of gas, the car is turned off, at the gas pump and at the gas station. ).
My son took his 2005 Jeep Liberty in for the recall where they are supposed to install a trailer hitch to prevent the gas tank from rupturing during a rear end collision. They told him his frame had too much rust on it and that they could not put on the hitch. It is a NY car and he now lives in arkansas. It is in normal condition for a 10 year old car driven year around in upstate NY. I am sure that they have not see as much rust on vehicles in arkansas so I think they are antsy about any rust at all. Or, they are looking for any excuse not to do the repair. The amount of rust just speaks to the original design/manufacturing quality if anything. It been over 2. 5 years since the recall was first announced and over a year to the point that they had enough hitches. He's been trying to get in for repair the last 6 months. I'm sure 3 years ago there was less rust on the frame but it has taken this long to get it in. Is Jeep off the hook because of rust? shouldn't Jeep be required to fix the problem on all vehicles that are still on the road? shouldn't they have another fix in place for Jeeps that can't accept the "hitch" fix? it appears from what I have read that Jeep purposely delayed the recall so there were fewer vehicles left on the road and now they get to make the call when there is too much rust. How am I supposed to feel that my son is safe if Jeep is allowed to say "pass" on repairing his vehicle. Who allowed Jeep to decide if a vehicle gets the fix or not. Why was Jeep allowed to have a fix that can't work on all vehicles still on the road? I have read there have been additional Jeep fires and deaths just in the last 6 months and Jeep still has the ability to refuse to fix some vehicles. How is Jeep being held responsible for these deaths? what options does he have? please let me know what steps I need to take to have his Jeep fixed correctly.
The vehicle was being filled with fuel from a standard fuel pump equipped with an automatic shutoff sensor. When the fuel tank became full, the sensor was not triggered, resulting in fuel spraying from the fuel tank, covering the side panel of the vehicle, the ground, as well as the person fueling the vehicle. This issue has been recurring 100% of the time when the vehicle is filled using an automatic shutoff pump. Different gas stations have been used with the same results. This is obviously a safety hazard considering that the person filling the tank and the car are becoming soaked in fuel, and an environmental issue due to the amount of fuel being spilled onto the ground.

Every time I fill my Jeep Liberty (2005) gas tank, the gasoline splashes out the fuel spout onto the vehicle, the ground and me (the person filling the tank). The amount of fuel that splashes out onto the car and ground when the tank reaches "full" is very significant enough to cause serious injury. This happens each time I fill the tank to the point where I can't fill the gas tank to capacity due to gas fume inhalation and spill on me and vehicle. I feel this is a serious problem that affects my health and safety and would like it fixed. Now I only fill the gas tank just below capacity so it doesn't leak fuel.
Every time I go to fill my Jeep up, the gas tank over flows. It shuts off after a second or two, but there is a significant amount of gas that goes on the floor, and all over my car!.
Over time, the automatic shutoff on fuel pumps at gas stations began to not shut off until after a significant amount of fuel had spilled out (up to a half gallon). At first, I thought it may be the design of different pumps, so I experimented with different stations. I found that no matter what style pump or station I am at, this continues to occur. I have had to resort to estimating how much gasoline I need based on my gage prior to turning the vehicle off. Another option is to underestimate and never really have a full tank. I have found that severely slowing the pump down toward the end of what I think is the amount of gasoline I need for a full tank will usually (but not always) get the pump to shut off in time prior to overflowing. Although I have gotten better at estimating, there are still times that gasoline overflows. Aside from a fire hazard on the vehicle and on the ground at the pump, the gasoline can cause body damage over time. This has nothing to do with attempting to "top off" the tank after the pump shuts off. There is no top off room with this vehicle. I have had other vehicles that could take an extra gallon or more after the automatic shutoff, but this one does not. After looking at several forums and other online posts, I discovered that there are many other owners who have experienced this problem. I contacted Chrysler, left my information with them to be processed, and was told I'd be called back. They called back and left a voicemail saying that they would not be taking any action to fix it and that I could call back if I had any questions. I called back and could not get the agent that worked on my claim to call me back.
