3 Differential Unit problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/17/2016

Takata recall I am on my second rear gear in my freedom edition with the limited slip differential. They seem to start whinnying around120,000 miles the differential bearings start to abnormality wear causing the ring and pinion to wear prematurely which cause the gearing to slip wearing the teeth it's a very costly fix at 1,000 just for that type of special rear end the danger of it is the teeth could permanently slip on take off causing the flowing vehicle to rear you which could allow another serious problem of the Libertys not having proper rear protection on low speed impact which could cause fire.

5 Differential Unit problem of the 2004 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 11/09/2011

Car suddenly turned left on 6-lane busy street, accelerated, crossed 2 lanes on left, immediately accelerated & hit 6-lane highway divider at 45 degree angle. . Bounced up. Perched there for a awful second then tipped down on opposite road. Engine still maxed & uncontrollable. . Car turned gently over on roof because engine still at max. Turned it off fearing fire. Wife and I sat there upside down in our belts till the emts came. Researched on internet & found articles by at least 3 Jeep dealers sternly telling drivers to get their rear differential pinion gears adjusted if they mounted oversize tires. Our car had oversized tires when we bought it used. No Jeep company warnings. Were issued Jeep or by dealer. Found 1 terrifying article of a driver who slid to the left without steering control and was struck by an oncoming truck. I've driven about 2 million miles without ever being chg'd w/contributing to an accident. .

7 Differential Unit problem of the 2005 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/29/2008

This is for a 2005 Jeep Liberty. Faulty speedometer. Was replaced 2 times within 2 years. Chrysler TSB indicates replacement of the rear differential fluid every year to resolve the problem. There is a problem with engineering if you have to do this. They will replace the speedometer for ~ $210. 00 or change the fluid for $199. 00 every year. Consumers are being held hostage for this annual charge for the fluid change as I have had my speedometer changed 2 times already. The maintenance schedule says nothing about this in schedule a. However the dealer refers to schedule b as what they recommend due to this issue. However, the book sites an exclusion in schedule b if your vehicle is used commercially, heavy hauling, snow plowing, of road use, etc. I have as of 08/06/2008 42,722 miles on this, and do to prescribe to the above exclusion.

8 Differential Unit problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 09/26/2007

August 2006 car was serviced for dealerships failure to check rear differential fluid during service. Rear differential damaged and parts were replaced. Total repair bill $1,800. September 2007 - traveling on interstate 95 when speedometer stopped working, car started to shake and check engine light came on. Immediately changed direction and drove to dealership. I was told that the car needed a "whole new rear end" (axel, bearings, housing, gear kit, cup drive, cup differential, spacers, seals) and that it could have collapsed at any time and caused serious injury. Total repair bill was $2,600. Car is used for transportation to and from work - no "off-roading" or "towing". Mileage at time of failure was 88,000.

Rear differential failed.

14 Differential Unit problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/31/2005

My 2002 Jeep Liberty was taken in for service because of oil leaking from the right side of the front differential and a torn boot on the left side. These items were repaired and the vehicle returned to me. One month later while backing out of a parking space I heard a loud snap and then felt the left front end of the vehicle drop to the ground. The front wheel was forced up under the wheel well damaging the fender and blowing the tire. The lower ball joint had separated letting the vehicle drop and wheel to move up into the wheel well. The ball joint recall had been completed on this vehicle 30,000 miles ago. This was very scary because I had my 4 year old grandson with me and had just been on the freeway traveling at 65 mph. The vehicle is still at the dealer and I am waiting to see what Chrysler/Jeep has to say. Ld.

18 Differential Unit problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/13/2003

Speed sensor wire at rear differential was chafed due to close proximity to brake line to left rear wheel. The braek line contacts at the base of the conenctor where not plastic armor protects the wire. Conductors are exposed and ground on the the brake line, causing speedometer to give erratic or no readings. Most evident with passengers or a load in the rear, caousing the wire to contact the brake line. Erractice speed data also effects automatic transmission shifting, causing sharp and abbrupt shifts to lower gears at speed.

21 Differential Unit problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/16/2002

Upon making a slight lane correction at approx. 60 mph, my daughter's 2002 Jeep libety began swerving uncontrollably. She felt no resistance to the steering wheel as she tried to stop the swerving. At no time did she apply the brakes. Witnesses said it appeared she had a flat tire. Eventually, the vehicle entered the grass median and rolled 2. 5 or 3. 5 times coming to rest on the roof facing on-coming traffic. The complete rear end(tires and differential) separated and ended up approx. 75 feet from the vehicle. The right front axle or cv joint was broken. Neither her passenger or her air bags deployed. The driver's seat belt was broken at the end of the motion of the rolling. Both occupants were bruised and cut. We believe the axle failed and caused this potentially fatal accident. This vehicle had approx. 3000 miles on it. At 1800 miles the engine had thrown a rod and the engine was replaced completely. The Jeep Liberty is structurally unsound and of poor design particularly in the area of the rear suspension. Daimler-chysler has lowered the suspension in obvious response to roll over incidents. . .

22 Differential Unit problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 08/01/2002

When driving along at 48 to 55 mph, I can hear and feel a bearing type vibration noise coming from the middle or front drive train. The noise is a low pitch and can be heard best when going up hilly roads. My best guess, the noise is coming from the gears over meshing in the front axle. Waitng for d. C. To come up with a fix. Dt.

23 Differential Unit problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 11/03/2001

No impact to front differential noted.

24 Differential Unit problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/10/2001

Rear end differential/suspension and or brakes/wheels makes grinding noise when front wheels are turned, puting rear wheels in a situation of different tire rotation at low speeds, sounding like rear brakes are dragging. Dealer has already replaced rear brakes and turned down drums. Noise still exist. Dealer stated in writing that they were awaiting a service bulletin to correct defect.
