1 Power Train Driveline problem of the 2009 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 04/25/2011

The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Liberty. While attempting to accelerate, the contact noticed that both the driver and passenger side curtain air bags deployed without warning. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the drive shaft had fractured. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that water had gotten into the heat shield which caused it to fracture and affected the air bags. The manufacturer advised him to speak with the dealer to resolve the matter but offered no additional assistance. No repairs were performed. The current and failure mileages were approximately 50,000.

2 Power Train Driveline problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 11/18/2010

I've replaced three front drive shafts on my Liberty sport within a years time. This Jeep isn't abused and is driven in the correct mode for the road conditions. The belief is that the four wheel drive will not disengage properly but no one seems able to find the root cause of these malfunctions. I basically have no "shift on the fly", and must be stopped with the vehicle in neutral when engaging or disengaging any four wheel drive mode. Sometimes it requires many attempts to fully disengage! if unable to disengage the four wheel drive, even full time mode, the front drive shaft comes "unglued" where it connects to the transfer case and basically makes the vehicle unsafe and unable to drive until the front drive shaft is removed, which in turn nullifies the four wheel drive feature.

3 Power Train Driveline problem of the 2003 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

Vehicle: 2003 Liberty ltd with 110,000 miles. Upon acceleration from a dead stop, or when coasting then accelerating, or shifting under light-to-neutral throttle, there is a noticeable clunk from the rear differential, similar to a worn universal joints. Took it to the dealer and found that the spider gears were extremely worn creating abnormal clearances. The dealer stated that this is a common problem with the 2003 model (others?). This is likely due to a poor design or materials. Broken or dislodged spider gears have the potential to seize the rotating assembly and send the vehicle into an uncontrolled skid. Parts ordered aftermarket to be installed on a date tbd.

4 Power Train Driveline problem of the 2002 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/08/2010

Propeller shaft bearing was exposed causing grinding/rattling noise and possible failure. While driving I heard a loud click and rattling noise. I took the car to the mechanic and he said that he could see the bearing exposed for the propeller shaft and that it needed replacement.

5 Power Train Driveline problem of the 2006 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 10/12/2009

The ignition key was stuck in the ignition and the brake park interlock mechanism was not working. I was able to move the shifter through it's entire range without pressing the lock button on the shifter knob. This is a safety hazard since without these safety mechanisms operating correctly the shifter can be accidentally knocked onto drive. The weak link is a plastic push rod in the shifter mechanism that is not strong enough for the job. Many Chrysler shifters will fail in this manner.

6 Power Train Driveline problem of the 2008 Jeep Liberty

Failure Date: 03/19/2009

When driving the Jeep up hill the Jeep will drop its speed tremendously from 65 or 70 to 40 or even 30 mph. This occurs every time I drive it up a hill. In heavy highway it is dangerous. The dealership said that's how they all operate and after checking the vehicle nothing is wrong with it. I was also told by the dealership to just push the accelerator down to the floor and this may help. This process is also very dangerous because when you get past the hill the car is then moving at a high speed which is also dangerous. Since this is something that the dealership states cannot be corrected. Consumers should be made aware of this malfunction of this vehicle. Road trips are not safe if you drive uphill. Nothing will be done until something happens. Unfortunately Chrysler will continue to sweep this under the rug until then. I also contacted customer service for Chrysler which was a waste of time due to the fact that I was hung up on and refused a manager as well as any one of authority. I would like a resolution to this type of defect which is not a normal operation of any vehicle. I was also told that many customers complain about this and obviously nothing is going to be done. I was also told that the car is safe and a representative from Chrysler verified that knowing that the vehicle has a problem with hills. I was also told by a mechanic that the body is too heavy for a 4 cylinder engine. Unfortunately Chrysler does not make the consumers aware of this before purchasing the vehicle, which is a concern of mine as well. I am sure that eventually every customer that has purchased this vehicle is aware of it after the fact.

Failure Date: 01/13/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Liberty. While driving 5 mph in snowy conditions, the vehicle was supposed to be in 4 wheel drive and began to skid. The vehicle failed to shift into 4 wheel drive, although the indicator was illuminated, which meant it was activated. The contact also heard a clunking sound. She took the vehicle to a repair shop and was informed that the link in the driveshaft failed, which caused the failure. The manufacturer informed her to send a receipt for the repair and they would consider reimbursement. The current mileage was 42,156 and failure mileage was approximately 42,150. Updated 3/5/09 * cn the water pump was replaced updated 03/13/09.

The 2007 Jeep Liberty sport my parents and 3 year old child were in was t-boned on the passenger side by another car that was traveling at approx. 45 mph upon impact, resulting in the Jeep rolling over several times. The other car struck the Jeep directly in the middle, causing the middle section to cave in, forcing the passenger seat into the dash/glove compartment. The rear axle on the passenger side separated from the frame, the drive-train separated, the gas tank ruptured, and the rear shock springs came off. The person seated in the front pass. Seat sustained a spinal fracture and brain hemorrhaging. The driver sustained internal bruising/damage from hitting the steering wheel, ultimately breaking the steering column. All occupants were wearing their seat belts.

Was this letter received? how long is the processing before we receive any response? should I mail it again to 1200 new jersey avenue se? problem: with the driver's foot on the brake and the vehicle is stopping, the engine races and the car lurches forward.
