Transmission broke! every owner of a 2005 or 2006 Jeep Liberty diesel that I have spoken with,has had to rebuild or replace their transmission. The manufacture had a recall to tune down engine to help prevent problem,I had this done,but this is only a temp fix,(a band-aid). The real problem is a weak link in the tranny,(the torque converter). When the torque converter fails it destroys the transmission. . Which is what just happened to me. My Jeep is 8 years old, but I only had 68,000 miles on it. The reason I purchased this vehicle was for the long service life of the 2. 8l diesel (300,000 plus miles before rebuild). I live in a somewhat rural area and I have spoke with over 12 people who has experienced this same problem with there 2. 8l diesel transmission #545rfe. I know this is a nationwide problem,I have gone online and spoken with alot of Liberty owners and all have had transmission problems,I have also spoke with many former Liberty owners who said they would never drive another Jeep, because lack of dealer concerns over transmission problems. . They had! I am correcting the problem by replacing the damaged stock transmission,with a highly recommended aftermarket one made for the torque of a diesel engine. . I feel consumers should not half to endure that large out of pocket expense,to repair a manufacturer problem! thank-you.

This Liberty crd has had multiple transmission problems under original warranty, engine was detuned to prevent torque converter problems, after warranty I still had problems. On 11/27/ 2012 going to work merging on toll way car lost power. Turned out to be torque converter blew up and destroyed transmission. Even though car has 130,000 miles, transmission in car never had more than 40,000 due to the many times it was removed.

I am experiencing torque converter shudder at between 45 and 50 mph at 1500rpm or lower. I first reported this defect when the vehicle had about 800 miles on it. The vehicle feels like it's driving over rain grooves or rumble strips when I'm experiencing the problem. The issue is 100% reproducible. The dealership has insisted that this is a condition that affects all Jeep liberties called "exhaust drone. " during one of my many service visits for one of my many other service issues, I had a rental 2012 Jeep Liberty that did not have this problem. Jeep customer care has been unsuccessful in even contacting the service manager at the dealership where I bought the vehicle because he does not return their calls. I am concerned that the torque converter will fail during regular use and leave me either stranded or cause an accident. Also, the vehicle intermittently shifts very rough, and on several occasions when I am starting the vehicle it surges forward or backward suddenly even when applying very little pressure to the gas pedal, and this is accompanied by a very loud knocking sound. Sometimes the vehicle makes noises between 15 and 25 mph, which I can only describe as a loud high pitched whining or warbling sort of noise (like a loose flywheel).

After lots of tries and no help from Jeep, I am trying to find help with a problem with an speed sensor that is not working properly. Apparently there is a problem with the routing of these wires causing them to rub, short out and it causes the sensor to quit, and anything options running off this sensor (example tranny shift points causing the torque converter to not unlock and causing stalling of vehicle).

Vehicles stalls after extended off period. Vehicle shudders under normal driving conditions. Chrysler has 2 tsbs to fix this- 21-016-05 and 21-009-06 which calls for replacing a trouble prone torque converter. Chrysler has an updated torque converter to fix this problem yet will not take action to fix the vehicle even after numerous attempts since 2006 to get transmission fixed properly. I would like this looked into as myself and numerous other owners of the 2005-2006 Jeep Liberty with the diesel engine experience the same issue. The truck has stalled after starting on several occasions causing concern for action since I have had my pregnant wife witness this. Please look into this.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Liberty sport. While driving 35 mph, the vehicle lost power, the transmission light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the torque converter was defective. A transmission specialist stated that the transmission fluid did not circulate through the seals. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The current and failure mileages were approximately 86,000.
2005 Jeep Liberty diesel with transmission problems due to torque converter. Jeep replaced the first one at 28,000 mi and I am replacing the 2nd at 83,000 mi. I am replacing it because between 25 and 45 mph the rpm's constantly vary by 200 to 500 rpm as well as occasionally a shifting shudder occurs which can cause rupture of the tc and subsequently destruction of the transmission at time of acceleration. I had to do something to avoid being stranded on a hill somewhere.
2008 Jeep Liberty chatters when backing up slight incline. Problem since new. Still under warranty. Dealer installed torque converter and new rear drive shaft on two different visits. Neither solved issue. Dealer and Chrysler told me that this is ". . . The nature of the beast. " local service rep. Told me that he's driven several with same problem. Chrysler refuses to go any further with solving the issue, basically, telling me to ". . . Live with it. " if, indeed, it is ". . . The nature of the beast. . . ," shouldn't there be a recall to address this? at this point, I'm looking into litigation for breach of contract, as their warranty assures me a flawless product. The consumer stated the vehicle would shudder or jerk while backing up on an incline. The consumer was advised by a chrsyler rep to take the vehicle to a local transmission shop to get a diagnosis only. The repair shop believed the problem was the front u-joint on the rear driveline which was very stiff in one direction, the slip yoke was a little stiff and the hill brake did not release quick enough. The driveline was installed. However, the problem continued. Updated 01/12/11.

A bad grinding sound at 40mph 2008 Jeep Liberty has 800 miles on it had to fix torque converter on it did not fix the problem, service rep. Is test driving it to see what's doing it.
H. This car has required engine oil to be added every 50 to 100 miles without any evident smell or sight of leaking oil, also torque converter needed replacement experienced deceleration of speed while driving at 50 mph.
On the 27th. Of Dec. 2007 I was traveling on i70e and as I was getting back on the hwy. From a rest stop just east of indianaplois, in. My 2006 Jeep Liberty crd had a failure in the transmission torque converter. I going about 60-65 mph when all of a sudden there was a lot of shuddering coming from the transmission and then a loud klunk and it cause a sudden drop in my speed from 65 to 30 mph. Luckily no one was injured or hurt, however as in the past when this happen, its without warning causing a temporary loss of control. The transmission shudder happened several more times while ii was traveling. My dealer has know about this problem for over a year, and I have reported it to his service department more than 4 times and the problem has yet to be fixed. Chrysler I believe knows that there is a problem with the Jeep Liberty crd's drive train but has yet to fix the problem. This will be my third complaint to NHTSA on this. The same problem happened again when I was returning home on the 3rd of Jan. 2008. I will be seeing a rep on this coming Monday and I do not expect to get any satisfaction from him on this safety matter. Also my rear brakes are groaning every time that I stop and the dealer has already did a TSB on them once and the problem has returned. They told me that after the car has more than 12,000 miles they will do nothing. The car has just 16,500.
I am the owner of a 2005 Jeep Liberty with a 2. 8 diesel crd engine. Chrysler has a mandatory recall requiring some new components on the transmission and a "slight" engine detune. I purchased this vehicle for several reasons; 1. Better gas mileage. 2. More engine torque for towing and a longer lasting engine. At 31k dollars you would expect it to be good vehicle. It appears to me that Chrysler has too small of a transmission on this vehicle and is detuning the engine to spare the transmission. I'm sorry, but I bought a diesel for that very reason: more torque than a gas engine. Do I have to expect this recall? it was completed last week, the Jeep dealer indicated that my warranty would be void it I did not comply with the terms of the recall> sincerely, tim lett.
I am having shudder /shudder at anywhere between 30-45 mph. It feels like my car is searching for a gear , it surges. Torque converter could be the issue.

2006 Jeep Liberty crd began stalling while on the interstate. Driving started out normal, then suddenly while at a steady 65 mph the Jeep began making a loud noise and not responding to acceleration. This went on and off intermittently for 5 miles to the next exit off the freeway, then it occurred intermittently on a highway then side streets until I made it home. From a dead stop it was extremely sluggish to get going at all. The symptoms point to torque converter issues, I had previously had the torque converter recall work done at the dealer in December 2006, apparently that didn't even last a year. It is unacceptable to stall on a freeway, let alone side roads. The dealer was unable to schedule a visit for well over a week, it goes in tomorrow.
Automatic transmission torque converter is going into partial lock-up. Manufacturer is aware of situation per kn 87887255, but there is no repair at this time. Hesitation, shudder, almost stalls. Been occurring since purchased new.
The 2005 Jeep Liberty limited crd has had a residual problem of fluctuating of rpms (shuttering) during idling, creating stalling at stop lights when the brakes are engaged on a cold engine start. At busy intersections when the brakes are engaged, the vehicle will unexpectedly lurch forward and usually cause the engine to die in the middle of traffic. This is a major safety hazard, causing an immediate life-threatening situation. This vehicle has been in the shop five times for the same issue and the problem is still present. Fuel filters, air filters, egr valves and return lines of injectors have been replaced, all to no avail. This urgent issue needs to be addressed immediately.
We recently purchased a 2007 Jeep Liberty sport. After owning it for less than a month we started to notice that the vehicle would shake (or shudder) when maintaining speeds between 35-70 mph. The problem seemed to get worse when driving up hills. We took the vehicle in to a local Jeep dealership and the torque converter was replaced. We have had the vehicle back for approximately a month now and are experiencing the shudder again. We have an appointment with the service shop next week.
- the contact stated that while the 2007 Jeep Liberty with 32000 current mileage was in the shop for a lower ball joint and a torque converter recall the mechanic cut the shroud that covered the fan . Therefore, the fan was exposed. The dealer admitted to cutting the shroud, and they will replace it.
The vehicle, when going down my driveway, steep gravel, unlocks the torque converter at around 1400-1500 rpm, allowing the vehicle to 'freewheel', similar to my old 1933 Plymouth. Despite numerous complaints over the past two years, the Chrysler representatives insist that this is normal. Every transmission shop I have consulted, and everyone I know, believes this is not a normal function of the transmission, and in my one million plus miles of driving, I have never encountered it on any other automatic transmission.
I am the owner of a 2006 Jeep Liberty. Approximately 3 weeks after I purchased the new vehicle the transmission failed while I was driving on the highway. At that time the vehicle was towed to the service department where the transmission problem was said to be repaired. Since that failure the vehicle was not running properly: the automatic transmission did not seem to be shifting smoothly. For the next 8 months I tried to have the service department repair the problem but they did not, the told me the "problem" was normal. In January 2007, I noticed the problem with the transmission was getting worse. I had to press the accelerator more than normal to get the car to shift after making a stop. The car would then jerk into gear while my foot was on the accelerator and I would speed up more than was safe. The final incident was when I was accelerating to get on the highway after a stop and the car jerked into gear along with making a clunking sound. Because I was trying to accelerate, when the car jerked into gear I was sent off the side of the road. Thank goodness there was no traffic or I would have been in a serious accident. I drove to the nearest service department where the problem was quickly diagnosed as a torque converter problem. The vehicle was in for repairs for 22 days before I got it back. Parts were replaced in the transmission but only after approval from the manufacturer. The vehicle is running a little better but it is still not running like it was when I first bought the vehicle. This problem can be deadly and I no longer feel safe driving the vehicle.
Received re-call notice, contacted dealership as instructed in notice and was told they didn't have parts. Contacted daimler Chrysler at the number provided and they said they could not/would not do anything. Now my car is not fixed and the dealership and daimler Chrysler are both telling me it is not their job, fault, problem.
I have had several safety related issues with the transmission on my 2005 Jeep limited Liberty crd. Chrysler recently issued a f37 customer satisfaction recall which was supposed to resolve the issue, but only one day after the recall was performed the truck exhibits the same unsafe condition.
My 2005 Jeep Liberty diesel suddenly and without warning loses power, and will either die or only move at under 10 mph. I have had this happen while driving down the interstate and luckily an accident was avoided. The same problem frequently occurs while in stop and go traffic and is especially concerning when turning left at stop signs and stop lights. I took the vehicle to the dealership and they told me the torque converter and transmission pump needed replacement, but it would be ok to continue to drive the vehicle. I expressed my concerns that continued operation of the vehicle with the problems its exhibited could potentially be unsafe. They told me the parts would be available the next week and it would be fine until then.

I almost lost my life on a cliffside corner on hwy 1 when my 2005 Jeep Liberty crd (common rail diesel) torque converter failed causing both rear wheels to lock up at 55 mph. Happened again a couple miles later and then continued to repeat itself as I was attempting to get it to the dealership. It has been at the dealer 5 times to date for the initial problems (stalling at highway speeds and going into limp modes). I knew it was the torque converter preparing to go out because I had researched consumer reportings of similar problems online. The dealership, however, explained that they would only follow Chrysler corporate's rules and corporate wasn't allowing them to replace the converter. Instead the dealership replaced transmission solenoid, then transmission control module, then called to tell me it was my aftermarket installation problem (twice). Each time this meant that they sent me out in a "fixed" vehicle that stalled on me and caused me to put emergency hazards on and drive in limp mode in right hand lane or on shoulder. Then when the dealership service manager drove it and personally felt what a "safety issue it was", has now looked at the postings and is befuddled why corporate wasn't advising them of this problem. I believe that this is a design defect with these 2005 and 2006 Jeep Liberty crds and that Chrysler is aware of it but doesn't know how to fix it. Chrysler is putting its consumers at grave risk for loss of life. Please keep in mind that (1) Chrysler has stopped production of them in the u. S. And maybe we now understand why and (2) only 11,000 were sold in the u. S. I am a lawyer and will exercise lemon law right as this vehicle cannot be repaired because it is a design defect. However, all 11,000 of these vehicles will most likely fail and the potential for loss of life and property exists 11,000 times.
The best way I can describe the problem our car has behaved like we've slowly released the clutch on a manual transmission vehicle while the vehicle was stopped. It has an automatic transmission. The car will lurch forward, hard against the brakes, the engine will start straining and finally stall out. Fortunately, each time it's done this, we were in our own driveway or a place where there was no danger of causing an accident, or were able to hold the brakes hard enough to keep the vehicle from entering the roadway. It seems to do this when the vehicle has cooled off but not necessarily when it's completely cold. We have not been able to recreate the right set of circumstances for the dealer to see the problem (we are not sure what the right set of circumstances are). Since no codes have been set, and it hasn't happened when the dealer drove it, no repair has been made or offered to be made.
12,000 odometer. Transmission began shuttering while we were almost home from a trip with small 7. 5 ft pop up camper. Took to dealer and the Jeep was "worked" on for a full week. I picked it up next week and noticed worse condition before getting out of the parking lot. Co-owner of dealership was asked to ride in the Jeep and while he was driving it the torque converter locked up and stranded us. Thankfully, this didn't happen the previous week when we were 3 states away from home. This is the 3rd time the Jeep has been in for repairs since I bought it in February 06.
I was doing a rapid deceleration for traffic slowing down suddenly on us 30 in york county, PA. I heard a loud clunk as I slowed down and the check engine light came on. As I tried to get back up to speed the Jeep would not get out of 3rd gear. I kept to the right and got off at the first exit. After 5 minutes, I got back in the Jeep, started it up, the check engine light still on. It shifted somewhat normally although it did shudder a bit. The following day, 9/10/06, the engine light was off and appears to be shifting ok now. I called the dealer who said that if it happens again I should bring it in. I am aware that there have been problems with this torque converter/transmission. I am concerned that it will happen when I have less flexibility to respond with a sudden power loss, especially in rainy/snowy weather, or a crowded road with only one lane. Jeep Liberty limited, 2006, 2800 miles.
2006 Jeep Liberty crd with 2200 miles completely died on the on ramp to an interstate. After 7 days the dealer said that it was the flywheel in the torque converter. They say that they cant get parts to fix the problem. I had my two children in the car and had to wait for a tow truck to rescue us. I felt very lucky that I was not getting on the interstate the other way because there is no place to even try to pull over.
Since new with my 2005 Jeep Liberty crd (diesel) in sept. 2005 my crd has needed to have numerous technical service bulletins (TSB's) done to attempt to resolve transmission issues. These TSB's are numbered 18-008-06, 21-009-06, 21-007-06 and now a recall number f31 as an emission issue as the previous TSB's caused a situation where by scan tools could not "read" the vehicles computer for emissions testing. There is also TSB 18-023-06 and TSB 18-009-06. Symptoms have been stalling and rough shift points for the vehicle. While driving in the blue ridge mountains on windy secondary roads my vehicle twice stalled at 40 mph, one occasion I has a semi behind me that narrowly avoided impacting my vehicle as it suddenly lost speed on a turn due to stalling. The dealer can not replicate the issue. It is fairly obvious after research online that there are known issues with the transmission system of the crd that they have been attempting to prolong the service life of transmission components by use of various "unofficial" recalls known as TSB's. , thus total failure of the transmission, torque converter will occur out of warranty. In my situation I could have easily been killed when the vehicle stalled for no apparent reason. I urge you to investigate the situation and Jeeps knowledge of transmission problems. It has become unfortunately obvious that Jeep is hoping to "band aid" the situation until warranty periods expire in order to save costs. The danger is when these "band aided" components act up or fail the vehicle suddenly and with no warning stops. You I'm sure can see the safety implications. The Liberty crd (diesel) was an extremely limited production run for Jeep of only some 13,000 vehicles over a 1. 5 year period. They no longer produce the vehicle for the us market. I'm sure due to the small production they feel this issue can be "handled" quietly, I fear that somebody will die.

A) ck engine lt came on, heavy black smoke, Jeep would stall, fuel mil decreased,b) a/c quit working,c) Jeep violently jerked while accelerating/braking, Jeep would lurch after coming to a complete stop, Jeep stalled during turns and in middle of intersections leaving the Jeep stuck in the path of oncoming traffic,d) safety recall of lower ball joints,e) while out of state, driving home at pm on highway, the elect throttle and battery warning lights started flashing, electronics and lights on Jeep failed, Jeep stalled on highway and would not restart, f) after p/u the Jeep up from the shop for a new starter and battery, within 30 miles, same warning lights appeared, electr quit, and Jeep again stalled in traffic and would not restart, rear hatch opened and windows stuck down 2. A) wouldn't run properly, unsafe to drive b)a/c quit c)not safe operate Jeep for 5 days until auth dealer could take in thejeep d) recall replacement e) had to have Chrysler tow to shop (first site didn't even work on diesels, second didn't have a certified diesel tech in) f) had to have Chrysler tow to shop 3. A)egr etc replaced but in shop for 5 days due to backorder on parts b) transducer switch replaced, refrigerant refilled; safety backup switch on a/c not replaced because part was on backorder,part installed a month later c) authorized dealer stated diagnostics showed transmission failure to include front pump, seals, and other misc. Parts with the torque converter out of range, service bullentin issued by Chrysler indicated parts were on backorder, parts installed after 10 days in the shop d) lower ball joint kit installed, in shop and unable to drive for 1 day e) installed new starter, let Jeep sit for 1 day and was not able to start, put in new battery and stated Jeep was fixed, unable to drive Jeep 7 days f) Jeep still there, no power, may be the alternator but because battery is dead, the failure history is unretrievable, not able to diag problems other thean prob electrical.
Driving the Jeep around 20 mph. Transmission went into neutral and would not go into any gear, but would go into park. I turned the Jeep off, restarted it and it went into gear for about 30 feet, then went back into neutral again. It would move after a restart every time, then stop again very shortly after putting it into gear. Had the Jeep towed to the repair shop, they found no codes in the computer and are now saying the torque converter failed which caused the filter to clog.
Transmission on my 2005 Jeep Liberty crd diesel experiences on-going shudder and hard shifting when driving it. Chrysler has issued several TSB's to correct the software issue, but the problem continues. Many other Liberty crd diesel owners experienced the same symptom before their transmission completely failed and required full replacement. I am afraid to take the car on long-distance trips from home for fear or being broken down on rural highways or roads and stuck hundreds of miles from home while a Jeep dealer takes 2 or 3 weeks to replace my transmission. Chrylser needs to fix this, please help! regarding the incident date, please note I just chose today's date because it has been happening ever since I got the Jeep.
2005 Jeep Liberty crd last spring I had shuddering and stalling due to the transmission. The dealer could not find a problem in July at just short of 25,000 miles the torque converter failed. . It was replaced along with a transmission pump, and transmission oil cooler. I am still occasionally getting some transmission shudder and clunking.
