When coming to a stop, my torque converter will lock up and stall my engine. This has been reported to the dealer who has replicated the issue and attempted to fix the problem by replacing the torque converter but the issue still exists. It has happened on many occasions (20 or more) for the last month and a half and is very dangerous because I have had the vehicle stall multiple times while in traffic.

Took my 2005 Jeep Liberty in to have them look at a shift shudder. The torque converter was breaking apart. If I had not taken it in who knows where it would have completely failed and what the consequences could have been.
Vehicle was driven up to red light. When light turned green, vehicle would not move leaving it in traffic unable to get out of the way. It was later determined by the dealer to be a failed torque converter. The part was replaced, however, other parts in engine and transmission that could have been damaged were not replaced. Was told by dealer that redesigned torque converter is not yet available but coming.

I own a 2006 Jeep Liberty crd (diesel) I have had problems with my Jeep driving safe now since I bought this truck in Jan 2006. My truck will shutter and almost stall on a daily basis in heavy traffic. And back in may 2006 my whole truck stopped dead on a local highway and went into a "limp" mode bringing me from a 45 mph speed to about 2-3 mph in a second. I have researched this and have found that the issue seems to be in a faulty torque converter in the transmission. I have meet several other people on the internet and in person that have all had the same issues. I have told my dealer about this with 0 outcome of a fix, there is a service bulletin for the transmission, but this has not helped either. I only hope that the issue does not happen while im on the interstate with my wife, with the sudden speed loss and lock up of my rear wheels I could only hope the cars behind me could stop in time, could a large semi though? there are many people with this issue and only doing a short internet search will prove this. Just search for Liberty crd lost torque converter and see what you find. I hope that Jeep will have a better solution soon for this.
I'm reporting a 2005 Jeep Liberty sport crd (4x4 diesel) transmission pump and torque converter failure with only 6000 miles on the odometer. This failure resulted in loss of shifting at 60 mph on the highway with the vehicle in 5th gear. After coming to a stop at a stop light my family was stranded at a desolate intersection in hot south texas. There was great potential for a collision and loss of life when vehicle control and acceleration was lost as well as while pushing the vehicle from travel lanes. The repair took 3 weeks leaving me without my new vehicle. I incurred greater than $1500 in expenses in hotel and travel expenses to retrieve my car from a dealership far from home. To add insult to injury, Jeep was and is aware of transmission reliability issues and has issued a TSB "silent recall" but did not notify drivers therefore unnecessarily putting my family at risk.
My 2005 Jeep Liberty diesel had a catastrophic transmission failure on the drive home from the purchase from the dealer. I bought it used with 18,000 miles and during the drive home I had irregular shifting followed by high engine revs and then a loss of power on the highway with multiple warning lights (almost as if I had lost a gear). After taking it to the dealer the first time, they replaced an internal component in the transmission, I drove it home (approx. 30 mi. ) and had the same thing happen. The second time the dealer said that the originally, they did not replace enough of the trans. To fix the problem. I ended up needing a new torque converter and various other internal transmission components. This must have been quite the popular repair because the dealer had my car for 3 1/2 weeks as the part was on Chrysler backorder. Sometimes the transmission still seems awkward and I get an occasional shudder however, the occurrences vary and it is almost impossible to predict or pinpoint when something strange happens.
Driving vehicle in rush hour traffic when transmission failed, locking wheels in middle of intersection, stalling vehicle. Nearly rear-ended due to sudden lock-up of rear wheels and vehicle without warning. Vehicle would not move, had to put automatic transmission in 1st gear and floor accelerator pedal to move at barely 1 mph. Required 2 minutes to move vehicle out of intersection and onto roadside to avoid traffic accident.
Egr failure. Tourque converter failure - requred tow and 8 days in service. 4 tsbs.
I have had my 2005 Jeep Liberty in five times for the same problem. In each case there is a severe to very severe acceleration problem. In two cases had to have vehicle towed in because it would not accelerate at all, two times I had to baby the vehicle into dealership only once did I drive it in like an almost normal vehicle. Engine seemed to be running fine in neutral but seemed to be maybe fighting with auto transmission or torque converter to move. Dealership has replaced numerous parts on transmission, egr valve twice, reprogrammed something on torque converter and yet problem is still there on an ongoing basis sometimes slight but always apparent. One time it took me two minutes to get through a stop and go lights, that time dealership said computer said I ran out of fuel even though fuel gage said I still had a quarter of a tank and the week before I had run it to empty and had not run out of fuel. Vehicle currently stutters at about 55-60 mph hour and has consistently gets no more than 22 mpg even though it has a diesel that should get 26 mpg and it is all highway miles. Once when passing a vehicle it started to act up, you never know when it will lose acceleration. This vehicle is unsafe to drive and I have sent in a lemon law request which they acknowledged they received 10 days ago and stated someone from milwaukee office would contact me in the next two days or less but still have not heard from anyone even after I called two days ago asking why I have not heard from milwaukee office.
I have a Jeep Liberty 2004 sport edition with 10,000 miles on it. After owning it only a week, I noticed that when driving and going up grade , maybe 10 degrees on the freeway at speeds of around 40-50 mph the vehicle would begin to slow down or lose speed. I would give it more gas, and the vehicle would continue to slow down-hesitate. The vehicle doesn't immediately take off, or accelerate, it 'hesitates'. I would give it just a hair more gas, still no acceleration- vehicle continues to slow down. This almost caused an accident one day as I was trying to accelerate to the expressway, when the car hesitated, I even pushed the accelerator to the floor which I experienced the same problem. I have gone to my dealership, where I have purchased the vehicle. They told me there a design change on the 2004 for the transmission that does this. I can not tell you how frustrating it is driving a car which hesitates, especially when it hits 40 mph. It feels like the car is about to shut down. A tech drove the car with me and he experienced the same problem, they said there is nothing they can do. So I spend 20,000 dollars on a car that I really can drive over 40 mph. Chrysler is not willing to help out. I am not the only one please click on this link for many other Liberty owners that have the same problem. Any help would be appreciated. Here is the link this, this is just one of many that I found. . Read more...

Driving along in freeway traffic on the 405 in southern California when there was a horrendous shudder and a sudden loss of power. Had to pull over to the shoulder real quick and just narrowly avoided involvement in several accidents. Check engine light came on and then the vehicle seemed to drive normally. Torque converter and misc. Transmission pieces were replaced by the dealer, but there is still a weird shudder below 60 mph and some occasional loss of power.
I have a problem with my 2005 Jeep Liberty diesel failing to stop at the first stop sign in the morning. It has also not stopped after being parked for a few hours. The engine continues to push the vehicle forward into traffic or the intersection/cross walk. I have taken the vehicle to Jeep but they cannot duplicate the problem. I have come very close to running over students on the campus of the university of alabama. I believe this problem is associated with Jeep's torque converter problems. My wife has also experienced this problem so it has nothing to do with driving style. This problem will eventually kill or injure someone.
1) driving vehicle 2)vehicle stalls, engine cuts out, stumbles 3) reflashed computer numerous times, torque converter and clutch pack replaced.
Vehicle up-shifts prematurely while ascending uphill. Service department said this is normal on all vehicle types of this year and model. Chrysler is aware of this problem, however they have not developed a fix to the computerized transmission chip.
Transmission and engine lights came on upon towing a coleman "yuma" pop-up camper. Took in to dealer and dealer found that torque converter to be bad along with gear wear. Transmission needed to be replaced and gear wear repaired. Car has only 8,000 miles on it and it is the first time the car has towed anything. The car should not have had a problem since it is rated with a much higher towing capacity than the coleman "yuma" is. The dealership is trying to tell me that this is an isolated incident of a bad transmission, but upon further investigation with Jeep forums on the net, 85% of Liberty owners are experiencing problems with their transmission after 8,000 miles! one owner has had his transmission replaced 3 times! the dealership said this was covered under my warranty this time, but that it would not be covered next time. If the transmission is faulty on all of them, I don't want to get stuck with a lemon on a brand new vehicle!.

For most of the year I have been having trouble with my Jeep libert automatic transmission. I have had several problems with it and the dealer still has not resolved the issue. I am being told that they cannot replicate the problem. I describe the following as the problems. At a full stop while holding down the brake the trans mission will shutter and make a banging noise. The transmission shifting at lower gears is rough. It is not in a like new condition. He transmission makes a grinding noise. The vehicle has stalled 3 times do to the transmission problem. The vehicle has lurched forward at a stop sign/light. If not for holding down the brake the vehicle would hit the car in front of me. The transmission has shuttered as it changes gears while driving. Mainly at slow speeds. I consider this to be a safety issue with the vehicle. I believe the transmission will fail and I fear it will cause an accident. I have made every attempt to resolve this with the dealer. The transmission has been reconditioned twice. Once on April 5,2004 and the other on may 26, 2004. The vehicle was returned to me but the problems reoccurred after a short time. I have called daimler Chrysler customer service line and talked to several reps. I have file numbers 12578676 and 12805501. I have also spoken with service manager david cargail and distric manager bruce shirley. Nothing has been done to address the problems that I am seeing. I have included the copies of the receipts from the service calls that are related to the transmission problems. I am missing some of the earlier once from this year and will send them if I locate them. I did take the vehicle in today and david cargail test drove it and refused to give me a receipt that I had taken it in to get it looked at. He said that I should have enough documentation that I needed.
Transmission down shifts(clanks) we have a Jeep Liberty sport 2 wheel drive. Downshifts hard when applying brake. (warm or cold) we have had it at the dealers shop about 10 or 15 times in about 2 1/2 years. Shop foreman told us to wait until 30,000. Mile check up for trans. So I guess I'll have to pay for service on it to get it fixed. They have know idea what's wrong with it. So why do I have wait?? I guess some one has to die to get the problem fixed? or get badly hurt!!! so if some one has the same problem report it before some one's family gets hurt. Still nothing as of yet has been done!!!!.

Vehicle operates properly through 3rd gear prior to the torque converter clutch engaging. Once the torque converter clutch engages, there is a noticeable slipping. this is evident at/and above 50 mph, both on 3rd gear (with od off) and on 4th gear (with od on. ) the slipping is not intermittent; it occurs once the vehicle is hot, and when there is a increase in engine load, such as when going up hills (long grade) or when the throttle pressure is increased. It is also most noticeable with the air conditioning on. The slip stops (or at least I do not feel it) once the tcc disengages.
2007 Jeep Liberty with several transmission issues. Consumer states Chrysler never gave a response to his letter and wants the lifetime warranty extended since Chrysler changed it 4 months after he purchased vehicle and a replacement transmission. The consumer stated the dealer reprogrammed the ecu several times, replaced the torque converter twice, replaced the pump, replaced the valve body, cleaned debris out of the pump, serviced the clutch, but the transmission still made a horrible noise periodically. Since the last attempt to fix the problem, the vehicle had a poor throttle response. The consumer also stated it wouldn't creep into gear like a normal automatic transmission; instead it needed significant throttle application to get moving, then it lunged.
