This was the first time that we had filled the tank up on our 2006 Jeep Liberty since we purchased it on may 29,2012. While standing at the pump waiting for the tank to fill up, the tank started overflowing with gas. I had gas all over me, the car, and the ground. I wrote it off as being a problem with the pump. Two weeks later I go to a different pump to fill it up, and it happens again. So I called the dealership that we bought the vehicle from and explained the problem and we took it in for them to look at. They replaced a canister and leak protection guard, which did not fix the problem. I started looking on Jeep forums and have found quite a few instances of this same problem on the Jeep Liberty and these people have also filed claims to the nhsta. The only way for the problem to be fixed is for the tank to be replaced because there is a check valve in the tank that is causing this. This is a very costly repair as I have called a couple of dealerships around in the are with the tank alone costing over $1,400 dollars.

While putting gas in the tank I have to put it in very slow or it will shut off, then when the gas tank gets close to full gas will gush out. Also some times I smell gas inside the vehicle.

Gas tank would not take fuel. For 177. 00 the dealer told me the safty valve was stuck in the fill tube and I needed 1400. 00 for a new tank. Only 72,000 miles and all new valves ,2 recalls and now this. Never again.

The gas tank overflows every time you fill it up with gas. No matter who fills it up or what gas station I go to, when the gas pump shuts off the gas is spilling out of the tank. This is a serious safety hazard. I have had to remove gas from my vehicle and my clothing and body on several occasions.

For the second time in less than a month my gas tank has overflowed while filling. I went to a different pump than the previous time. This time the pressure of the gas going in when it overflowed was enough to cause the gas to spray back out and upward towards my face. I have a 3 year old who rides in my vehicle all the time including when I stop for gas. I have to take her out of her carseat and carry her inside to pay. Gas gets on my hands which I can't go inside to wash off without getting gas on her in the process. If I would have been standing in front of the gas nozzle this time, it would have sprayed into my face and eyes.
I purchased a 2005 Jeep Liberty from a dealer lot 01-27-2012. Today I filled up the gas tank for the first time and it overflowed on me, got on my jeans legs, jacket, on the ground and on the left rear quarter panel of the Jeep. The dealer filled up the gas tank before it was taken off the lot, and I was not informed of any problem by them. This vehicle transports my 3-year old in it!!!.
When filling the gas tank, I let the pump shut off by itself. When the pump shuts off, a few ounces of gasoline spill on the ground. This happens consistently.
Fuel shoots out of inlet when filling gas tank. During one of the many incidents the fuel shot out about 18 inches from the filler inlet.
When filling the gas tank, the gas pump clicks like the tank is full then it starts overflowing.
When going the gas pump to get fuel and placing it on automatic, when full the pump shuts off and then it "burps" back at me. Spilling gasoline on me and everything around me. It is also ruining the paint on my vehicle, spilling all over it every time this happens. I have owned the Jeep since 2006 and it just started doing it about four months ago. My tech said it must be a faulty fuel tank filler neck. It was replaced at the cost of $443. 50. And that did not solve the problem. He thought someone had tried to steal my gas and damaged it. It still burps every time I fill it up. I consider this very dangerous, besides being a nuisance and damaging other things. I have checked this out on the internet and find that this is happening to several others who are owners of Jeep Liberty's. There is a demo on you tube .
Gas tank overflows when left filling at gas pump, does not activate auto off at any pumps for gas flow. Issue that seems to appear in a lot of Jeep Liberty's.
Every time I fill my fuel tank the gasoline overflows and spills all over the vehicle and ground. This will happen when I fill automatically or manually.
After over 3 years of no problems when fueling our Liberty, we began to have gas spew out at every fill-up. The pump does not shut off when the tank is full, and gas comes back out forcefully enough to hit the person pumping the gasoline.
When filling up the tank at the gas station the tank has overflowed quite a bit of gasoline onto the ground as the pump stops. This has happened on several different occasions at several different filling stations.
Gas spills out of the tank opening when refuling, after the pump auto shut-off has turned off.

My Liberty started having fuel spill problems about a month ago. Now, every time I fill the tank, the pump doesn't 'click off' fast enough and there is an overflow (~1/4 gallon) of gasoline. This has happened at every gas station I've tried lately.
When filling up at a gas station, the gas tank over flows before the pump stops. I originally thought it was a broken pump, however, I have now filled up over 4 times at 4 different gas stations and the problem continues to happen. This most recent time I have lost around 1/2 gallon of gas on the ground. I am also concerned with the effect of the gas on my paint/car body.
The last 3 times I have filled the gas tank on my vehicle, gas has overflowed onto the ground. After the 2nd time, the check engine light came on. I brought it to the dealership and was advised the code read that the filler neck was faulty and needed to be replaced. I advised them that I had an issue with gas overflowing onto the ground when filling up and was advised it "may" be fixed by the new filler neck since there is a sensor in there. I had the filler neck replaced. I filled the Jeep again today, roughly a week after having the filler neck replaced, and again gas overflowed and leaked down the side of my Jeep and onto the ground. Up until this point, when filling my Jeep, the gas pump would click off when the tank was full. I have gone to three different gas stations so it is not a problem with the pump at the station.
When filling gas tank it splashes out and get all over the Jeep and the person filling the tank.
At the end of filling gas tank, gas backwashes out of the filling tube down the side of the car and onto the ground.
When fueling the vehicle, the vehicle no longer causes the gas nozzle automatic cutoff valve to operate before fuel is overflowing down the side of vehicle and on the ground. Until this fall, the vehicle usually cutoff the nozzle as the tank was full - very full - but prior to overflow. Starting two months ago, the tank always overflows at every pump used. This gasoline spill seems dangerous and is an environmental concern. I have noticed that mine is certainly not the first complaint of this nature, and it seems to be becoming a prevalent concern with this particular vehicle.
Gas spits out of fuel tank when full does not auto stop. (faulty sensor)I try not to fill tank all the way.
Hi, I own a 2005 Jeep Liberty for my wife, purchased it with 20k and now with 98k we have a consistent problem with gas pumps not shutting off at any of the stations where I have purchased gas. At first I just assumed it was related to a particular pump, but have found that it overflows no matter where I purchase gas. I have done some research on Liberty owner’s forums and talked to others who have the same problem. Some have had their tanks replaced, which seems to solve the problem. I believe that this is a serious danger, especially with 3 young kids of ages 7,5,2 and if god forgive something horrible would happen and certainly an environmental issue especially when such efforts are made to even control vapor emissions on modern vehicles. The first time the tank overflowed my wife relates it to me as being scared, surprised and soaked her leg and shoes. When trying to pump gas it just literately just not easy it takes about 10 minutes to pump half a tank manually. The stopping the pump to avoid spilling gas is not suitable long term solution. I’m concerned about the environmental issue, but am more anxious about the safety issue this causes, especially for my wife and kids. It’s bad enough driving around with the smell of gas around the Jeep, but I hate to think about other worse scenarios such as a fire or having gas sprayed in someone’s face. I hope there is a fix for this and believe that it should be covered as part of an emissions and customer safety related service campaign. Please let me know how to get this fixed. Thanks, signed….
Every time I fill the gas tank, fuel gushes out of the filler neck onto the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. Most times, the automatic fuel shutoff a the gas pump . . . . At various stations . . . Does not stop the flow. At other times, fuel gushes out even if the pump shuts off. I have tried slowing the rate fuel goes into the tank. Sometimes this works. Other times, it doesn't. The only way to avoid this potentially dangerous situation is to try to calculate how much fuel it will take to fill the vehicle and then stop the flow myself a couple of gallons early. There is a Jeep TSB out on this problem. And there have been numerous complaints. The fule spillage issue is dangerous and should be a recall item.
Every time I go to fill my tank with gas there is a spill over. I have been to multiple different filling stations and get the same result every time. Gasoline always runs down the side of the car as the tank reaches fuel capacity. Gasoline spills out of the tank, down the side of the Jeep, on to the ground, and even gets on my hands, clothes, and shoes. This is totally unacceptable! I have never had such an issue with something as simple as fueling a vehicle. I have owned this vehicle for less than 2 months. I purchased the vehicle used from carmax. I plan on contacting them regarding this problem. I have read other complaints online for the same year and model as my Jeep. I feel that this is a major defect that warrants a total recall on all 2008 Jeep Liberty models. I don't like having to worry about ingesting gasoline when I eat because my hands were covered in gasoline. I don't like breathing the noxious fumes while I'm inside my car because fuel from a defective fuel tank has spilled on to my clothes and shoes.
I just had to have my fuel tank replaced because the overflow function did not work when filling the vehicle with gas. The auto-shutoff did not activate causing gas to waterfall out of the tank when the pump did not shut off when filling gas. This is the same problem for which the Jeep wranglers were just recalled.
Gas tank overflows after it is filled. Jeep service told me it is caused by a cut-off valve defect no longer covered by warranty and that the repair costs $750. 00 and involves replacing the entire fuel tank. I see from the internet that this problem is common to this vehicle. Have you previously been made aware of it and is it the subject of a recall? it is obviously a very dangerous situation as the gas literally spews out of the vehicle.
When pumping gas into my car, when it approahes full, gas spills out of the tank. It does not recognize when the car is full with gas, and gas spillage occurs. I contacted chrylser and brought the vehicle for a diagnosis into a Jeep dealership. The stated that the fuel tank needs replacement which would cost approximately 1600 dollars. They would only cover 50 percent, which I cannot afford, and will not take any other responsibility with helping with this repair.
Gas tank over fills on 2005 Jeep Liberty. When pumping gas , automatic shut off does not work and tank overflows. Very annoying and very dangerous.
Gas spurts out the filler tube when the vehicle is being filled and it is near full. The automatic pumps do not shut off as they would when the vehicle's tank is full. This happens regardless of whether I am filling with the convenience lock on the handle of the pump or when filling the vehicle squeezing the pump handle myself.
Upon filling gas tank with fuel, the shutoff engages too late, and gasoline pours out down the side of the vehicle onto the ground. This does not matter which gas station is utilized, but happens whenever reaching a full tank, even when care is taken not to engage the spout at its maximum capacity. This is an ongoing issue, since I purchased the car last September, and so the following "approximate incident date" should be - ongoing.
Every time I fill up with gas, the gas spews from the filler neck when the tank is full. This happens whether the nozzle shuts off automatically or if I shut it off manually to try to prevent it from spewing out. This happens no matter which gas station I fill up at, whether it's near home or out of town. I have driven many, many makes of automobiles since 1956 (that's 56 years) and this is the first vehicle that ever gave me this problem.
Every time I try to fill the gas tank, it overflows. It doesn't matter what station or pump. If I use the automatic lever on the pump, the gas comes squirting out all over my car, my shoes, and the ground. Even if I don't use the lever, and squeeze the pump handle myself, the pump still does not shut off before overflowing. It is a problem with the car, not the gas pump or the operator.
Every time I fill up my Jeep the pump will shut off when the tank is full and I remove the pump and gas will bubble out of the tank and runs down the side of the vehicle.
2008 Jeep Liberty limited 4x4, "burps" gasoline out of the gas tank every time I fill up with gas. I have filled up at multiple gas stations and every time the pump stops filling when full, but the Jeep spits out gas after the pump stops. I can't believe there is no recall on this problem, since I see this as a very serious safety concern.
