I purchased my Jeep from a private owner back in 10/2013. I thought I wrote a complaint out but I can not find it here. I have a 2008 Jeep Liberty with a roll back top. While driving with my grandson the top blew back and broke the clip broke when it flew back. . To fix, it will cost 2,000. 00 to 2,500 dollars . It was out of warranty and Chrysler would not help me in any way I called Chrysler direct and a local dealer. I did not think it was the right thing to do being that I do not believe a roof she be able to blow off your vehicle. I could have been on a highway driving 50 or 60 miles per hour and that roof could have blown totally off my Jeep and really caused a problem. Extremely dangerous. As far as look at it this it is a huge defect. . I have driven many convertible cars and never had the roof blow back. Plus the noise factor is just awful. You cannot even hear someone speak with the top closed. The wind is just awful there design on this roof is dangerous and just plain awful!!.

The contact owns a 2004 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle accelerated up to 75 mph on its own. The contact was able to decelerate. The failure recurred, and while depressing the brake, the vehicle accelerated instead of braking. There was a warning light illuminated with a symbol of a car and the contact was unsure of what that meant. The vehicle was taken to dealer; however an inspection or repair did not take place. The manufacturer was notified and no assistance was provided. The failure and current mileages were 72,000.

Vehicle has a eco-mode to reserve excessive fuel usage. When traveling at a speed to exceed 45 mph the vehicle reacts with a bad vibration and shake as if there is a flat tire or something. When coming to a complete stop the vehicle shakes as if there is a defect with the rotors or brakes. When taking off, there is a kick when attempting to first accelerate especially at a traffic stop/intersection. Vehicle has been serviced at the sport durst Chrysler Jeep in durham nc and it has been declared as "drone mode which is unknown cause of issue- unrepairable. " service department conferenced with Chrysler corp. Customer service and has concluded that vehicle is recommended for buy back under lemon laws. No further action has yet been taken. Vehicle is currently unsafe and undriveable. Need another vehicle immediately.

2006 Jeep Liberty- window regulator problem. Windows crash down into door while driving, startling the driver! this is the third window in the vehicle that has had to be replaced. This is apparently a huge defect (just read the many reviews online) that Chrysler won't admit to.

Electronic throttle control - loose ability to accelorate, rough idle and slow power (jerky starts when occurs during casual drinving). This has occured while on the freeway and causual driving on the city streets. When this occurs on the freeway, rpm's go above 3000 when only going 60. . . Car sputters and feels like it could just stop, engine runs high and if you accelorate, it is slow to catch and starts jerking. This has occured several times even after being seen by the dealer 6 times and supposedly "fixed". I fear that this is a safety concern because of the jerky acceloration and slow reponse to acceloration it is possible other vehicles could be following too close and rear end my vehicle.

The contact owns a 2002 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that while sitting at a red light with vehicles in front of her the vehicle began accelerating forward and the back wheels were spinning with smoke coming from the rear end. The contact put both feet on the brake pedal and the acceleration stopped. She drove the vehicle home and called Chrysler. They stated that since there were no recalls there was nothing they could do. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileages were 62,000.
Jeep Liberty, 2010. Left house and drove ~ 100' to the first stop sign and made a full stop. Started to drive away and there was an immediate lurch and thrust of acceleration, with limited and/or loss of steering and/or braking ability. The Jeep jumped a curb and struck a pedestrian and mailbox. Causing injury to the person and damage to the car and mailbox.
The contact owns a 2010 Jeep Liberty. While driving approximately 8 to 20 mph the lights on the instrument panel illuminated. He engaged the accelerator pedal to its full capacity and the vehicle would only accelerate up to 18 mph. He was forced to drive onto the emergency lane. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The failure occurred twice. The failure mileage was 2 and the current mileage was 380.
The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Liberty. While the contact was driving 25 mph he depressed the brake pedal as he was approaching a traffic light but the vehicle accelerated. He was able to stop the vehicle without incident and notified the manufacturer of the failure. The manufacturer advised him to have a diagnostic test performed by the dealer to determine the exact cause of the failure. The contact stated that he would take the vehicle to an independent mechanic but not to an authorized dealer since the dealer would not disclose the actual cause of the failure. The contact also stated the failure occurred approximately two additional times, when braking while approaching a traffic light. The failure and current mileages were 29,000. My father's Jeep Liberty turbo diesel automatically & randomly accelerated on its own about 2-3 days on his way to work (similar to the Toyota situation). The Jeep on-board computer threw up an engine fault code. When he took the car to the Jeep dealership, they said his accelerator pedal module was bad and made my dad pay over $300 to get it replace. The Jeep had under 50k miles on it and it should be against the law to make customer pay to repair a car that speeds up on its own. Are we the only people who have had this problem with a Jeep (Chrysler) product? we have receipts for the repairs and it should have documented the engine fault code that Jeep discovered.
I was at a complete stop with my foot firmly on the brake waiting to exit a parking lot to enter traffic, when the Jeep started to accelerate into oncoming traffic. I was holding the brake down and I could hear a grinding noise as the car continued to advance into traffic. I took my foot from the brake and put on the accelerator to narrowly miss being hit broadside by a pickup truck. I called Chrysler and was told that she had never heard of this happening, but I have found many other peoples' stories online of the same problem.
2004 Jeep Liberty parked in parking garage. Put key in ignition and had foot on brake. Turned key on, put it in reverse and car accelerated out of control. Put second foot on brake and tried to stop car. Continued to accelerate. Front drivers side tire caught a pillar and between that and practically standing on brake finally stopped car. Took car to dealer in west valley ut. They could not repeat a diagnostic problem but did state the throttle body was dirty and cleaned it, along with $1575. 95 worth of parts and labor. They replaced a bent steering gear. I had the car for 5 years and it never happened before. I wrote to Chrysler and they sent me a check for half of the $1575. 95 damage. They did not include any other paperwork. I called them and they again would not put anything in writing as to why they did not pay the entire amount. I strongly feel that it was a problem with the acceleration system and I should be reimbursed for the rest of the money.
Our Honda civic was in motion when struck from behind by an out-of-control 2004 Jeep Liberty. The Jeep pushed our car for 1 1/2 blocks before veering to the right, taking out a utility pole and hitting 3 cars in a used car lot before coming to a stop. The driver of the Jeep stated the brakes would not work and the car was clearly accelerating throughout the accident.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Liberty 4x4. The contact was driving 30 mph as transmission fluid began abnormally leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic test that located the failure at the transmission seal. The dealer replaced the transmission seal and housing extension but the failure persisted. When attempting to shift gears, the transmission would exhibit an unusual knocking. On one occasion while driving 30 mph, the vehicle abnormally accelerated and the contact was able to stop the acceleration by abruptly applying the brakes. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 1,850 and the current mileage was 45,000.
The 2005 Jeep Liberty in which we were riding accelerated while I was depressing the brake pedal. This happened twice. The first time, I thought that perhaps I had hit the accelerator accidentally. The second time (the very next time we started the Jeep), I had my foot on the brake to slow our descent down a long driveway. I am positive my foot was on the brake. The Jeep lunged forward and picked up speed. The only way I could stop was to turn into an embankment. The Jeep overturned. The accident occurred on December 26, 2008 and was reported that day to the police and our insurance company. The 2010 Toyota incidents have prompted me to report this incident, but the accident occurred a year earlier. Again, I repeat: the brake pedal was depressed; this was not a case of accidentally hitting the accelerator.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Liberty. While driving 45 mph, the brakes, vehicle speed control, and steering locked up, but the vehicle maintained its speed. The vehicle did not stall. The contact shifted into park and skid off the road. The failure occurred at least three times on November 19, 2008. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, but they could not find any failures. There were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The failure mileage was 6,500.
I'm waiting there is a light change when I push and hold the brake to stop the car and it will move abruptly forward.
Ltr from senator nelson on behalf of constituent, who has experienced acceleration problems with her 2007 Jeep Liberty. The consumer was stopped at a light when all of a sudden, the vehicle accelerated, hitting the vehicle in front of her. The consumer had both feet on the brake, but the vehicle would not stop. The vehicle was towed a repair shop. The mechanic informed the consumer, the electronic throttle needed to be recalibrated.
Transmission hesitates / lurches randomly. Car stalls out, increasingly frequently despite repairs. When engine cuts out, lose all power steering brakes etc - so far only at low speeds but progressively worse - seems very similar to Jeep commander recall at higher speeds. Rpm needle goes wild after engine cuts out. Can restart and limp a few miles, then need tow - 2x towed in 1 week, 3x towed in 2 months, and 4 trips to shop without results. Car currently stuck upstate NY where I was trying to vacation -and Chrysler/Jeep not so cooperative. There's plenty evidence of stalling problems on internet for 4-5 years - see edmunds. Theories: deceleration / rpms below 1000 make engine cut out. Solenoid is pulling battery amps =12 and causing havoc in ignition system, short-circuiting sensors. Thermal computer module damage. Computer scans for diagnostic codes definitely not reliable. By relying only on computer module for diagnosis, dealers are only making the problem worse because they are sending cars back out without fixing root problem, causing more damage. I had wheel sensor found corroded 6/3, crank sensor fail 8/6 and cam sensor failed 8/10. Sensors don't fail sequentially nor so fast. Something is causing sensors to fail. And while sensors not working they are causing damage of their own. . . Computer, ignition coils (all 6 needed repair in 1 case where burned out). Who knows if the spark plugs, fuel pumps, injection cleans, and throttle body cleans work or not. (some say tb cleanout is important if stalls are at lower speeds - less air inflow). Battery seemed to have issues too soon - may be related. One case where harness wiring rubbed against rear something causing probs. My speedometer broke after 1 sensor repair. Separately (unless water and corrosion are the real culprits) brakes and rotors wearing out - replaced 2x in 40k miles. Not right. Some blog on that, too.
Dealership stated there was nothing wrong with my front abs brakes. Still after 14,746 miles give or take a few my brakes still have periodic pulsation. I should of wrote this complaint 14,746 miles ago my vehicle now has 49,175 I bought it 34,429 thank god for extended warranties because otherwise I would have no windows because after buying a $16,000 vehicle I could not afford to replace all the window regulators that broke OH and I had to have a fuel pump module replaced it did not fix the problem my main concern on this heap im mean Jeep are the breaks front and rear and that Chrysler Jeep will not be held accountable for these problems until a person has died. There are many other problems cosmetic problems like the interior and heater vents. But not life threatening. I also have many concerns with the electrical system but again the dealer crown motors of redding California states that they cant manifest it they cant fix it every time I get my Jeep back from them it runs worse that it did prior.
On 2/21/08 I took my 2006 Jeep Liberty to david o'neal automotive to have my vehicle checked as a result of two incidents that had occurred during it's operation and another operational problem. The first incident occurred in the walmart parking lot as I was stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross the parking lot. The Jeep accelerated while it was in a stopped position and I had to put the vehicle in park to avoid hitting the pedestrian. On the second incident I was stopped at a light when the Jeep once again accelerated on its own. The other problem that I was having with the vehicle is it's inability to accelerate effectively at times. The service advisor advised me that they did get the Jeep to duplicate the problem but they did not get a code for the problem. On 2/22/08 I spoke to the service manager for the dealership with regard to the problems I was having with the vehicle, the issue of my having to pay for diagnostic fees and repairs and the safety issues involved with this matter. He advised me to wait until the vehicle repeats the problem and bring it in to see if we can get a code. I notified him that they had already seen the problem repeat itself when I had it in for repair and a code did not activate. He again stated that I should bring it in to see if a code could be retrieved. I asked him, if a code could not be retrieved, what do we do then? he could not give me any definitive answer to this question. On this same date I relayed all of this same information to the customer relations coordinator. In addition I expressed the fact that when the repair bills and diagnostic fees were being charged to me it was okay to proceed without codes but now that I feel that the dealership should be paying for these costs, due to when the vehicle was purchased (1/3/2008) and the nature of the problem (defect), the dealership feels that we cannot proceed without a code.
While waiting at a traffic light the vehicle started to accelerate and struck the vehicle ahead of it. The brake pedal was applied with both feet but this not stop the vehicle. This has happened on more than one occasion, but this time there was property damage.
The speedometer / mileage odometer have intermittently stopped working on several occasions. I brought this up to the dealership since prior to the vehicle going out of the 36mo/36000 mile warranty and was told there was nothing wrong with it, there obviously is. The final time they went out was on Nov 10th while we were going through the mountains of tennessee on our way to nc. It has not worked since. After much looking on the internet I have discovered there are a lot of other consumers with the identical complaint on the 2001 through 2006 Jeep Liberty's. I then called the Chrysler consumer hotline and the first person I spoke with was very understanding and said that Chrysler would be able take care of it, he then transferred me to a supervisor to have the repairs authorized and the supervisor was very rude and said "Chrysler didn't owe me anything, and they would not provide any assistance". This is unacceptable to me as a consumer.
When at a stop, on a very little or slight incline, less than 7% by placing the vehicle in reverse the following occurs. Vehicle will surge about 6 inches and stop then surge about 6 inches and stop, by applying more throttle, engine rpm approx 2500 to 3000 the vehicle will move. Turned off the hill start assist (hsa) problem solved. No advise from dealer as to cause of original stated problem or repair.
I wanted to include my vehicle incident in regards to the complaints on the Jeep SUV fires. I thought it was necessary to include my entry, because unlike other incidents mentioned in the investigation, my vehicle spontaneously caught fire while I was driving it and was not the result of impact from a crash. It was a Friday evening and I was traveling home on the highway during rush hour traveling with the flow of traffic at about 65 mph. All of the sudden, and without warning, my vehicle started losing speed at a rapid pace. Thankfully, I was in the first lane and was able to pull immediately into the breakdown lane. All of my dashboard lights came on and while I was leaning over to inspect what could possibly be the problem, the hood of the vehicle suddenly burst into flames. I exited the vehicle swiftly and luckily a tow truck driver who had saw the smoke immediately called 911. The car was engulfed in flames in less then 5 minutes. Had I not been able to exit the vehicle or had children restrained in the back seat, there could have been serious injuries or possibly a fatality. I reported the incident to Chrysler after going through my insurance. There response was a polite letter telling me they were sorry for the incident, but were not responsible. The vehicle was less than 2 years old at the time and serviced regularly. The finding of the fire dept. 's inspection was inconclusive, but I was told in confidence that it seemed more than likely it was a faulty issue with the vehicle. After the incident, I took multiple photos of the interior and exterior of the Jeep, which included under the hood since we suspected the engine was at fault. If they are useful to your ongoing investigation, please feel free to contact me so that I can email them along. Thank you.
The contact owns a 2003 Jeep Liberty. While traveling 25 mph and attempting to apply the brakes, the contact stated that the vehicle suddenly surged forward. The contact was unable to stop the vehicle using the brakes. The throttle sensor was replaced three times but the failure continued. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000 and the current mileage was approximately 88,000. Updated 01/11/2011 updated 03/30/11.
Speedometer has a 5 mph error. . . . Manufacturer confirms error and indicates that this amount of error is acceptable.
On 2006 Jeep Liberty renegade activates for no apparent reason, causing vehicle to lose power/choke out/stumble on acceleration. Problem occurred intermittently up to 3 or 4 times a week. Tended to happen often when going around corners in 1st or 2nd gear, and sometimes when just going straight. Sometimes the light will flash while the loss of power occured, but sometimes not. . When this occurred pavement was dry and there were no abrupt manuevers no reason for this system to activate. This was a serious safety issue that could cause an accident. Purchased vehicle new from dealer in November '06. Dealer acknowledged problem in March '07 , claiming they were waiting for a software update from Chrysler. In June '07 I returned to the dealer and addressed the problem again, and I was told that there were no tsbs, no codes, and they could not duplicate the problem . They did not acknowledge"the problem this time. They acknowledged it in writing on my service receipt in March). Even on the way home from the dealer today it happened again when I exited an off ramp from the highway.
I was coming to a complete stop at a speed of 30 mph and had my foot on the brake. The engine continued to accelerate while I was pressing as hard as I could on the brake. The car lurched far enough forward to hit the bumper of the car in front of me. This is the second of two occurrences. The first was similar in nature. I was exiting the freeway after having the speed control activated. I was coming to a stop-the vehicle violently accelerated and lurched unexpectedly into the intersection. Luckily, no other car was present. Again, I pressed as hard as I could, but the vehicle continued to accelerate. I quickly change to neutral, where the engine rapidly revved to over 6,000r pm's. I am not sure what I did to finally make it stop-to frightened to remember!.
