15 problems related to car stall have been reported for the 2009 Jeep Patriot. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Jeep stutters and stalls out immediately upon filling tank with gas, almost got hit many times pulling out of gas station, this needs to be addressed, it is deadly and many other people on various forums have reported same problem. Nhtsa needs to stop overlooking this issue. It is a common vehicle still on the road today and I have no plans to get rid of the car for at least another 5 years minimum. Recall this issue, it is deadly and dangerous and I will not be a statistic.

Jeep Patriot stalls within about a mile of filling the gas tank, steering wheel locks and is very dangerous. I was stopped at a red light luckily. Problem needs to be recalled ASAP, gas tank needs to be replaced to fix the problem. Happens to a lof of Patriot owners in cars from 2007-2009. Please recall. Please!!!!!!!.
The vehicle habitually will stall while driving. It seems to be related to getting it fueled up. I cannot get any support from the dealer regarding the issue, and it seems to be a common problem when looking on various Jeep Patriot forums.
Every so often while driving and sometimes while car is not moving the electronic throttle control light comes on and the car stalls out, sometimes when its on long time the vehicle stability control light comes on , it seems to happen more the colder it is outside ,can not seem to find the problem but seems to be a common problem with the Patriot and other Chrysler models not sure why Chrysler hasn't done anything to resolve this issue.
When I fill up my gas tank to full, within a mile of leaving the gas station the car completely stalls while driving. The steering and the breaks lock up and I have no control of the car. I have to put the car in neutral and turn it on and off to start working again. This is very unsafe and dangerous while driving! this recently started to happen on a car with minimal miles on it.
Vehicle stalls out while driving down the road without any warning. . . It has happened four times now. Sometimes it will restart but usually not and needed to be towed. After swiping it and checking codes it resets and functions normal again and the problem can not be found. . . But it keeps happening and I keep getting charged for a technicians time that keeps on finding nothing.
My Jeep Patriot has a very unusual problem of going into "limp" mode under normal operating conditions--even after as little of 15 minutes of driving. The "transmission overheat" light comes on, and the vehicle's on-board computer forces the vehicle down to slow, sub-highway speeds--even as slow as 35 mph. The problem has been very dangerous for us (especially on the freeway) and occurs under normal (and even cold temperatures). It is not remedied by replacing the transmission oil or even installing a transmission oil cooler (both which I have tried). I have brought the vehicle to numerous mechanics--including the dealership and a transmission shop--which have all been stumped by the issue. After learning about and thoroughly diagnosing the problem, the transmission shop concluded that something very unusual was wrong with the transmission, and they wrote a statement to that effect. After experiencing this dangerous, frequent problem with my Jeep Patriot, I started a website to collect responses from other Jeep owners. In the short period of time the website has been up (jeeppatriottransmissionoverheat. Com), I have received many submissions from other owners who have the same problem (and all of which have attested that the dealership was ultimately stumped by the problem). The problem is found on vehicle years ranging from 2007-2014. Some owners believe the koho bearings are the root of the problem, but in any event, a complete transmission replacement is the only known remedy. After researching this problem thoroughly, as well as reviewing existing recalls on the vehicle, I am now confident that the problem is widespread (exists on 1,000+ Patriots), is found on new and used Patriots of all mileages, is very dangerous, and has been ignored by Jeep. It is my opinion that a safety recall should be issued by the NHTSA, after conducting its own research.
Our 2009 Jeep Patriot has stalled out over 35 times since October of 2011 after moving from California to florida. The issue of the Jeep Patriot stalling out always occurs at an intersection while waiting for the light turn green. The stalling out issue is more likely to occur on most, humid days. However, it has occurred on dry, humid days and on a rare occurrence, at night. The vehicle manufacture, Chrysler Jeep and the dealership have no answer for the problem since it has been reported, but they mechanics don't know how to "fix" or "repair" the problem of the Jeep Patriot stalling. It has to do with the Chrysler Jeep corporate offices not sending out a repair alert to dealerships and also because the problem of stalling cannot register on their computer diagnostic tests. The safety of the 2009 Jeep Patriot is a concern with my family since stalling out can result in an accident or a low provability of being a fatal rear end accident.
Vehicle will stall with no/little warning. Stalls generally occur during wet and/or humid weather conditions, however does also occur during dry conditions. Stalls usually occur during idling while the vehicle is in gear (stopped at intersections or in traffic), but can also occur during initial acceleration from a stop. This issue has been occurring since early 2012 and is increasing in frequency. Chrysler has a related recall (08v528000, "power train:automatic transmission:control module (tcm, pcm)"), which seems to exactly describe this failure, however Chrysler claims that this specific vehicle is not included in the recall.
I purchased a new 2009 Jeep Patriot in December of 2008, since I've owned the car I've only put 7200 miles on that car and have had it in the shop twice for what feels to be the same problem. The last time it was in they said it was the air box, problem solved. . . About 1,000 miles later the same problems with the car returned. These problems being, loss of power on acceleration, intermittent loss of engine power uphill, near stalls in reverse. When I need to accelerate quickly, the rpms red-line for me to get enough behind the car to move.
