Engine stalls only after filling up gas, resulting in check engine light or oil light turning on. I have taken it to numerous mechanics, who have all given me different answers, with anywhere from issues with evap hoses and fuel tank, to the fuel pump, or purge system. Problem was never addressed or mentioned when bought from dealership in June 2025 but noticed immediately after filling up gas for the first time since purchase of the car and problem occurs continuously after filling up gas. Not sure if related either, but if gas tank is overfilled at all in the slightest, it leaks out the bottom immediately.
Changed catalytic converter now my car want go over 5 mph.
We bought this car in March of 22 for our daughter. She used to drive back and forth between mankato, mn and coralville, IA. Every time she has driven it, the overheating light has come on and the car slows down below 50 mph. We have taken it to the mechanic, who we bought it from, three times for repairs. Every time we think it is done, the same thing happens. She has also had two different mechanics look at in mankato. On Friday, September 2, 2022, after only driving an hour, the overheat light came on the car slowed to below 50 mph. She said there was a semi behind her that almost rear-ended her when this happened. I believe there is a danger with this car. Car shuts off after fueling. Is a common problem with other Jeep owners found on google. My mechanic actually found the articles. Apparently it is a rollover valve issue. Like others have suggested, not to fill the fuel tank full unless you want to pay over $1000 for a new gas tank. I don't want to drive in fear this car is going to keep shutting off. Why hasn't this been fixed when so many others have had the same issue?.
Transmission.
Tl the contact owns a 2009 Jeep Patriot. While driving 60-70 mph, the engine lost power, the vehicle decelerated, and the contact lost control of the brakes. Additionally, the transmission would not move into gear and the vehicle remained stationary on the shoulder. The throttle, fill cap, and check engine warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed, but the test could not read the codes. The vehicle was not repaired. Days later, the failures recurred. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 108,000.
My 2009 Jeep Patriot won't crank. It turns on randomly. I am not sure what the problem is. New battery. No chip on keys.
I just recently purchased this car and the transmissions runs hot and you can drive past a certain speed limit.
After filling the gas tank the car bucks and the engine dies, forcing loss of steering control and acceleration in traffic. Also, there are difficulties filling the tank with gas - the pump shuts off constantly, about every 1/3 gallon or so, which means it takes about 15-20 minutes to fill the tank. I took it to a mechanic twice and spent more than $300 in attempts to repair this to no avail. I've owned the car for 10 years, it has just about 50,000 miles on it - I bought it new at the dealer.
The engine losses power feels like its gonna break down went thru 2 alternators and 3 battery's it feels like something is drawling the electrical power away when accelerating or using headlights or turn signals.
The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Patriot. While the contact's daughter was driving 35 mph, the vehicle started to vibrate violently when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle failed to accelerate, but the rpms remained at 5. There were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. Prior to the failure, the contact's daughter took the vehicle to a dealer for a noise in the engine. The vehicle was diagnosed with needing a new battery, sparks plugs, and transmission. The vehicle was not repaired at that time. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.
Severe acceleration jerk. When accelerating between 5 and 60 miles an hour the engine and drive train jerk excessively as if the engine isn't getting fuel. Will not jerk immediately after tank fill up bu will after next time driven until filled up again.
The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Patriot. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was determined that the cross member prematurely failed and the engine mounts fractured. The parts needed to be replaced. The VIN was not included in the manufacturer's service campaign to repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.
Daughter's 2009 Jeep Patriot 4x4 50,000 miles shuts off after filling up with fuel. Within a few minutes of fill up Jeep shuts off and steering wheel locks up while driving. After letting car sit in the off position it will turn back on and may or may not repeat the same cycle depending on how long it is run before trying to proceed. Only occurs when filling tank completely; no issues when not filling the tank maximum capacity.
While pulling out and driving down a parking ramp the engine code lamp illuminated. The vehicle continue to run and I proceeded home. While entering the freeway from an onramp I noted the vehicle would not accelerate normally. The engine rpm would max at 5000 rpm and the vehicle would not gain speed. Later code retrieval noted a obd ii code of p0017. By the time I made the appointment for inspection the code reset and turned off. This same code as reoccurred and reset up to 6 times. The dealership would not troubleshoot the incident with the code not being present.
