1 Carrier/rack problem of the 2014 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 11/05/2018

Takata recall this is the 2nd time this happened 3 months apart. Today I was going 45 mph driving for 3 minutes and my track light, battery light, and engine light came on and I lost pressure in the acceleration and could only move 20 mph. I pulled over to turn my car off and back on, then it worked like nothing was wrong. This also has happened 3 months ago on the bypass going 70 mph and I had children in the car. I thought we were going to die. So we pulled off the road to let it cool down and all the lights went away and ran as if nothing was wrong. Very scary.

2 Carrier/rack problem of the 2009 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 07/30/2018

The k frame (front cross member) rusted and failed resulting in both a frames and ball joints to also fail. The rack and pinion sterring controls are shifting on the k frame as well. Jeep offers no recalls or extended warranty for this common problem. Loss of steering control presents a hazzard due to substandard metal premature failure. First note of failure was while the vehicle was in motion at about 30 mph while turning right.

Failure Date: 03/17/2018

Vehicle will stall or completely driving while at speed either highway speed or backroads. I was almost hit by a train because as I was crossing tracks it quit. I placed it back in park and was able to restart it in time. It stalls or quits 8-10 times a day. I have had it at my dealer for the same issue 3 times now. This last time they have had it a month and still continue to tell me they don't know what's wrong with it.

5 Carrier/rack problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 08/30/2016

I took my Jeep Patriot to a local mechanic to put a hitch on the back for a bike rack, and he noticed that my subframe/cross member was in dire need of replacement due to rust. I took the vehicle to a Jeep dealer and was told that this is a common issue in these early gen. Patriots, and that a recall had been issued by Jeep (Chrysler action # 23-012-1) for the 2007 Patriot and compass models. The details of the recall would be that Jeep would cover the cost to repair the rotted sub frames in the 2007 Patriots manufactured prior to July 2007, and the eligibility for coverage under this recall is decided by VIN number. The dealer confirmed that my Jeep was manufactured after July 2007, but purchased in March 2008 and thus would not be covered under the same recall. Now, I am currently having issues with my Patriot's steering and deceleration, especially when driving on the highway. I experience shaking of the steering wheel and vibrations throughout the vehicle while going speeds over 50mph on the highway. When exiting the highway on a ramp, the issues are the most pronounced. I have to be diligent about braking several times to make sure the car is decelerating safely as well as the steering feeling extremely loose. I've contacted Jeep to see if the issue with the sub frame rotting would be covered in the 2008 Patriot model, since it appears to be the same issue as the 2007s had and had not been corrected. I had no luck talking to a representative with Jeep about this issue. My ticket with Jeep was closed by customer service after the e-mail rep. Directed me to purchase a warranty with Jeep or visit a dealer (which I'd already done). We are bringing the vehicle to a local mechanic to fix the sub frame this week. I'd like to be reimbursed by Jeep for the cost of repairing the subframe. Thank you for your time, bridget munster.

6 Carrier/rack problem of the 2009 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 09/02/2015

When driving my 2009 Jeep Patriot at approx. 25 mph, I heard a 'pop' sound from near the front driver side wheel. I visually inspected and it appeared part of my frame had cracked. I took it to a shop, and they told me that the entire subframe/crossmember/kframe had rusted through, entirely, as well as the control arms. I took it to a Jeep dealer, and they confirmed. After contacting chyrsler and submitting a case, the dealer send digital images of the affected parts to Chrysler. Chrysler said there was nothing they could do since it was more likely than not corrosion from road salt. Both the mechanic and the dealer told me the Jeep was unsafe to drive. There was a recall of more than 130,000 2006 and 2007 Jeep liberty's for this same issue (undercarriage corrosion due to salt). How can a company reasonably think it is acceptable for a 6 year old vehicle with approximately 85,000 miles to rust through an integral part of the body/structure? I have a family, and had this piece snapped while on the highway at a high rate of speed, I could have killed them and others. I had the vehicle fixed, but will be pursuing further action.

7 Carrier/rack problem of the 2013 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 05/03/2014

Driving at 70 mph, interstate 57, near marion, illinois. Driver alerted by passing vehicle. Driver immediately pulled off the highway onto shoulder when driver saw flames coming from rear of vehicle. When stopped, all people exited vehicle. Driver and navigator immediately began trying to put out flames coming from rear hatch area. With the aid of several passing motorists, flames were nearly put out by the time the fire department arrived on scene. Police were immediately there, before fire department. Lost most of the clothing and camping equipment that were riding in the plastic storage containers in the bumper-mounted hitch carrier. When we first stopped, flames were shooting out and melting plastic body panels and plastic bumper parts, and plastic rear wiper parts, and plastic storage containers in the hitch carrier. Standing behind vehicle, flames seemed to originate from the lower right hand bumper area, and spread rapidly up and over the rear of the vehicle, smoking and melting everything plastic. Driver & navigator suffered minor burns on hands of the kind caused from various melting plastics. By some miracle, the gas tank did not explode. Damage seemed extensive but confined to rear 1/4 of vehicle. Vehicle was driveable, but deemed unsafe to move under it's own power. So up on a tow vehicle to a repair facility it went. At this writing, damage assessment/repair is taking place. Outcome unknown, but probably grim.

8 Carrier/rack problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

2008 Jeep Patriot began making clunking/cracking noises from the front end at approximately 50,000 miles. Took into local Jeep dealer and they stated the ball joints were in very poor condition and needed to be replaced via front end lower control arms. After seeing what they were going to charge, took to an alignment shop. While driving to this shop, brakes began grinding. Ball joint failure caused brakes and caliper to be misaligned on the rotor causing the rotors to be damaged. Mechanic pressed in moog ball joints they said would be superior to oem parts and that they replace ball joints on Patriot, compass and caliber often. After getting ball joints replaced, the Jeep began handling poorly in snow packed road conditions, where the front of the Jeep feels uncontrollable and would sway from side to side, all while having total control of the steering wheel. Took back to Jeep, they said it was a ball joint issue once again and that the inner tie rods were loose, but didn't think that a slightly loose tie rod would cause the Jeep to go from side to side. Purchased new tires, thinking it was aging tires. No luck and vehicle over time has become unsafe to drive on road, even on regular driving conditions. Took to GMC dealer where a well known Jeep mechanic works. Confirmed tie rods are loose and strut is leaking. . Read more...
