Jeep Patriot owners have reported 13 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I was driving on a busy road and without any warning my Jeep just stalled. I lost all engine power, power steering and brakes. I pulled over to the side ofvthe road. I put car in park and turned the key to off position. Tried to restart and it would not, but continued to try to start by itself. Which in turn killed the battery. I had to have the car towed to the dealership. This happened today which is a Saturday and maybe they will get to look at it on Monday. This really scared me as I was almost rear ended. Thank god my daughter was not with me as it was only 5 degrees and snowing.

The contact owns a 2016 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving, without warning. The vehicle was taken to harry blackwell Dodge Chrysler Jeep ram (1660 w business u. S. 60, dexter, mo 63841) and was diagnosed that the totally integrated power module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The contact stated that the dealer previously completed an update due to the same failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under a recall and that the power train warranty was not covered. Additionally, the regular warranty was expired. The contact was referred to NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000.

The engine shuts off while driving on the highway/interstate. This has happened 5x now with no warning. Today I was traveling approx. 70 mph - the engine turns off by itself. Had to wait 90 minutes for a tow in 94 degree weather.

We bought this car for my son in Dec 2016. In the summer of 2017, he was driving down the freeway at about 70 mph. After driving for about an hour, maybe two hours on the freeway, his car literally shut down. It went from 70 mph to 20 mph immediately. This happened 4 times last summer. We took the car to lithia Dodge of santa rosa, CA twice. They couldn't duplicate the problem. I had him come home (chester, CA) and took it to where we bought it at susanville auto center in susanville, CA. They couldn't duplicate the problem either. They did say that they had two other Jeeps with the same transmission that the customers said they had the same issues. Again, they couldn't duplicate the problem. Just now, my son called (he is on his way up for easter) and he is stuck in woodland, CA alongside the freeway. It happened again. Susanville motors had us change the transmission fluid which we did (over $400) to hopefully fix the problem. It obviously didn't. It is only 75 degrees right now. The car doesn't show any sign of overheating, all fluids are good, but then all of a sudden, after driving freeway speeds, the overheating light will come on and the car will shut down. The temperature gage says everything is great. I have gone on the internet and found some chat areas where other people are having the same problem. When is Jeep going to put in a recall on this issue? they have to know about it. Is it going to take my son getting into an accident and getting hurt, or even worse, killing himself? I am petrified about this. I turned in a case last summer (case # 32398610) and spoke with a wonderful lady by the name of kaylee. Please help. Jeep won't do anything.

While traveling approximately 3 hrs at highway speed, with the cruise control on and in 108 degree weather, the motor shut down. If felt as if the vehicle ran out of fuel. No lights, no warnings, and over 1/4 tank of fuel. After stopping on the shoulder the motor would turn over, but not start, made me think that the fuel pump was bad. 5 minutes later it started, but when the throttle was pressed it died again. Another 15 minutes of sitting the vehicle started, but felt "sluggish". I started moving slowly down the shoulder, and the vehicle began to respond normally, and finished the last hour of the drive without incident.
Mfg and dealer indicate that all Jeep Patriots have transmission metering/sensoring system that fails and that they don't know how to fix the the defective components. They say they're not issuing a safety recall because there haven't been enough crashes or fatalities. When the transmission light goes on, the vehicle will slow down swiftly (ex 70mph to 20mph or full stop) and this impacts vehicle safety - putting safety and lives of thousands of Jeep drivers at risk, along with passenger and their families. All mfg and dealer try to do is collect diagnostic testing fee for vehicle defects they're aware of and have no fix for. Basically, they're willing to collect money and let people crash or die. I was last affected on may 31, 2014 and was left stranded on the I-10 in az at 115 degrees in the desert. I have to steer off highway to avoid trucks crashing into me. I suffered heat exhaustion and can't drive the vehicle anymore due to safety, stress, and anxiety. Jim click dealership and their mfg customer care mgr still try to collect money for diagnostic testing, but fully acknowledge that this is a known issue with no fix. I've demanded that they recall this vehicle, but they refuse. Jim click service mgr david sagers indicates that the mfg is "toying" with a senario where they lower the transmission fluid levels in these Jeeps, but that they don't really think that will be a fix. He says other models are also affected. Please issue a safety recall and if there is no fix, please help get me into a new vehicle. Previously, I was stranded for another recall issue - the actuator flow control valve 36016 and the tech found code p2017 and a faulty intake manifold valve sensor. This Jeep is a death trap.

I was driving in wausau, my Jeep stopped, I accelerated-nothing. I had cars behind me honking and the one direclty behind me was coming up fast, I steared to the right and managed to make it into a snowbank. I turned my car off, restarted it. Sat for about 10 mins with hazards on and was able to drive back home to eau claire. In February I replaced my transmission. My transmission never went out. My vechile would just get stuck in reverse, I'd have to put in drive, back to reverse, then to drive again to go. In addtion I had two more episodes, one with my twelve year old in the vehcile with me where it just stopped accelerateing. So I have a new transmission in. I have also filed a seperate complaint regarding tread wear on now tires, but it's a few weeks later and something still isn't right. I'm not getting stuck in reverse anymore, it's only been a month, but I haven't had the Jeep stop, but it feel like the (excuse my lack of mechanical jargen) fuel isn't getting to wear it needs to go fast enough because sometimes it doesn't excelerate (it's been over 30 degrees all week, it's not due to not having the car warm up). Then when it does choose to excelerate it "jumps" to it. Overall it's just noisy.
Driving downhill on south I-15 through phelan at 4pm approximately 95 degrees outside. Accelerator became non-responsive. Rpms dropped to idle speeds. Vehicle was essentially 'coasting' with the engine running. Unable to accelerate at all. Pumping accelerator was resulting in nothing. Engine temp was not above halfway mark, about 1/3 tank of fuel. No engine warning lights. Changing gears electronically (automatic) not helpful. Was able to make it to off-ramp since I was traveling downhill. Engine promptly died when I came to a complete stop. Upon pulling the key out and re-inserting the electronic throttle control error light illuminated. Engine would not turn over. Attempted to reset computer not helpful. Approximately 45 minutes later (and phone calls for road-side service) etc light went away. Computer reset may have finally taken. Vehicle started with no problem. Drove the final 35 miles home without incident. Could have been a completely different situation had I not been traveling downhill at speed. Have not yet contacted dealer as I am out of new car warranty. Numerous other complaints about issues at speed have me very concerned.
Stopped my 2012 Patriot at a light to turn left. I stepped on gas pedal to accelerate forward but no acceleration/revving occurred. When the pedal was depressed no resistance was felt but rather the pedal went to the floor with no acceleration/revving twice. I repeated this again with no acceleration/revving. On the third attempt the Patriot accelerated forward. The service department said to turn off engine and restart the vehicle to get the electrical system in sync. The vehicle was driven on highway for 30 minutes then 15 city traffic, air temp 38 degrees, pavement dry to wet (melting snow).
Engine stopped suddenly at 75 mph - near-miss rear-end collision with overtaking traffic. Conditions: after 3 1/2 hrs highway driving, same tank of gas, gentle left-hand curve, just after sunset, air temperature 39 degrees, albuquerque, nm. Engine would not restart. Returned 2 hrs later with tow truck, engine caught, started, stuttered, stalled multiple times. Towed to dealer. Engine started normally next morning. Still at dealer for evaluation.
We were driving the 2012 Jeep Patriot from michigan to new mexico, had just crossed nm state line. We were traveling at 80 mph on a 95 degree day when the engine suddenly quit causing the vehicle to stop almost immediately in the middle of the expressway. We were able to get into the expressway median (barely!) and attempted to restart the vehicle--nothing! we had no warning lights or indications of any problems with the vehicle; it had just over 1800 miles on it. Vehicle was towed to a nm dealer who told us he had another Patriot in the prior week with the exact same problem. Dealer did not know the "fix" for our engine failure --even suggested we just drive the car (in the desserts of nm) and if it died again we could just wait until it might restart! we had to leave the car in clovis, nm and rent a car to complete the trip. The 2012 Jeep Patriot previously written about has had a second engine failure at highway speeds. The clovis, nm Chrysler dealer assured us the car was safe to drive after the first engine failure; we drove the car less that 250 miles and the engine suddenly died on the expressway again! vehicle was again towed after stranding driver in the middle of nowhere. Does someone have to be killed before Chrysler will fix this problem? there are several incidents reported at nhsta between may and July of 2012. I can only imagine how many people have had this happen and didn't report it at NHTSA. Please let me know what I can do to get this resolved--this car is a death trap!.
This problem first happened a few years ago when I was driving on the interstate highway at 65 mph. It was summertime and it was about 80 degrees. I had bought the vehicle used about 6 months earlier in the fall. As I was driving the engine began to make a "whining out" noise and suddenly began to lose power. A light came on the dash area and my speed suddenly dropped down to about 40 mph and I was losing power to keep up with traffic. A tractor trailer that was traveling behind me had to slam on his brakes and almost lost control from trying to avoid running into the back of the car. I pulled off the interstate and called a tow truck. After waiting a couple of hours and letting the engine cool down, I started the car back up when the tow truck driver had arrived. He told me that this type of vehicle has a problem with the transmission overheating and causes the engine to lose power until it cools. I took the car to my local Jeep dealership and paid $100. 00 for a diagnostic test which did not reveal any other problem other than what I had experienced. The dealership told me that the light that came on in "normal" and is explained in the operating manual. They explained that it is "normal" for this to happen and there wasnt any defect or anyway to fix it. Since that time my car has done this continuously in hot weather when I am traveling on the highway. It has become dangerous for me to travel on the highway and risk breaking down on the side of the road or being collided with.

I live and drive in the new york area. Often when I go on drives of 20 miles or more in the summertime months, and it could be anywhere between 70 to 90 degrees fahrenheit outside, the 2008 Jeep Patriot becomes a dangerous vehicle to drive. When travelling with this vehicle on a freeway or interstate at a legally high rate of speed, the vehicle often experiences some malfunction that causes a shut down. The vehicle automatically reduces its speed to below 30 mph without any warning or sign of stress. Imagine driving down I-95 with huge trucks behind you and the vehicle suddenly stops responding to the accelerator but rather automatically slows and there is nothing I (or anyone) can do to prevent it because there is no warning. My first instinct is to get to the side of the road as quickly as possible so I don't get rear ended from large trucks, but sometimes this occurs where there is no place to pull over. It is extremely dangerous. This has happened to me at least 10 times since I bought the Jeep in September of 2008. I am fearful to drive the Jeep long distances on warm days, especially on highways. There is no indication that the Jeep is going to shut down from what is apparently an overheated transmission because the "transmission temperature warning light" illuminates at the same time the vehicle begins automatically slowing down. Further, the mechanics I have brought the car to do no¿¿t understand why it happens. I have researched this issue on the web and learned that there are hundreds if not thousands of other Jeep owners who have experienced the same issue. This vehicle should be recalled as it proves a dangerous hazard to the occupants of the vehicle as well as other drivers on the road, and because it poses a serious risk to motor vehicle safety. The manufacturer tries to cover up the above dangers of the car with a line in its owner's manual, page 174.
