My 2008 Jeep Patriot hesitates, sputters, and stalls a few minute after I fill it up. If I don't fill it all the way, it does not stall (and I never top-off when filling). I have started the practice of only filling 3/4 or pulling over in the gas station to let the car stall at idle before proceeding. When I first noticed the issue a few months ago, it stalled on me in traffic after leaving the fueling station. This was very dangerous. My mechanic at the dealer told me today he believes there is a bad liquid/vapor valve on the gas tank causing gas to enter an exhaust line leading to the carbon canister, and that a full gas tank replacement is needed to replace this bad valve. He also offered, that I could just continue to only fill the tank 3/4 and should be fine. At $2,000 to replaced the tank, I may need to consider having this work done by a non-Chrysler shop? The car regularly stalls immediately after filling the gas tank up to full. Whether coming to a stop, or cruising, or lifting off the gas pedal while moving. Occasionally, early in the morning, it may stall also. It will restart immediately after stalling but the stalling is dangerous when driving at speed, on the highway, and/or in traffic.

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Jeep Patriot. After filling the fuel tank, the vehicle suddenly shut off. The vehicle was taken to taylor automotive (11989 hwy 22, martin, TN) where they replaced the fuel cap and parts related to the fuel system, but the failure continued. The manufacturer was notified of the failures, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 110,000. The VIN was invalid.

2008 Jeep Patriot stalls shortly after filling up the fuel tank. Bought it used, and on the first fill up, got about . 5 miles before engine stalled. On my second fill up, on December 29, 2017, it stalled again after filling the fuel tank and driving in moderate traffic. Again at approximately . 5 miles. This was more serious as it was in traffic and could have caused a major accident. This was more a concern for me as my family was in the vehicle as well.

The vehicle is stationary and motor turned off. It is next to impossible to fill the fuel tank with gasoline. It must be done extremely slowly or gasoline comes bursting out everywhere. The local dealer attributes it to a check valve which is inside the gas tank and when broken will not allow air into the tank when filling with gas. This is a design flaw with Chrysler vehicles, and quite dangerous. It is also common for vehicles with this problem to stall when in motion, another very dangerous situation.

Every time I fillup my Jeep I get within 1 mile of gas station it begins to stall. This happened everytime I fill up for the past 5 years. The Jeep will just shutoff and the power steering stops working being that it stalled. This has almost caused me to crash many times and to get the problem fixed Jeep dealership said I would have to replace the entire gas tank. Doing some research lots of people are complaining about this happening to them and being very costly to fix. After filling up the fuel tank the engine will stall while driving in traffic multiple times for several miles. This is a major issue since you lose acceleration, power steering and power brakes. This has caused several near misses while turning onto an interstate. This seems to affect 2007-2009 models mostly. Shortly after filling the gas tank, after beginning to drive, the car stalls (locking the power steering). Very dangerous! this happens consistently after filling the tank, and within a mile of leaving the gas station.

When trying to fill the gas tank in a stopped position with the vehicle turned off, the hose continually shuts off as if the tank is full when it is not. Prior to this issue, the car would sometimes shutter and feel like it was going to stall out after filling the tank.

After filling the gas tank the car bucks and the engine dies, forcing loss of steering control and acceleration in traffic. Also, there are difficulties filling the tank with gas - the pump shuts off constantly, about every 1/3 gallon or so, which means it takes about 15-20 minutes to fill the tank. I took it to a mechanic twice and spent more than $300 in attempts to repair this to no avail. I've owned the car for 10 years, it has just about 50,000 miles on it - I bought it new at the dealer.

Filling gas tank to top (fill valve turns off at pump) will cause Jeep to sputter and stall when driving out of the gas station. Stalling will most often happen when accelerating out of the gas station lot into traffic. Car won't start again until turning the key completely to the off position and then starting again. After that, car will operate normally. If the gas tank is not filled till the gas automatically turns off, the Jeep will run just fine. If left running a bit before accelerating out, then seems to be fine. Need to burn off some gas from the top. I've had this issue before (5 years ago, 2012) and solution was to replace the gas tank. Not covered under warranty. That worked for a bit, but it is occurring again. Have had it diagnosed with dealership as same problem with gas tank and a valve on the tank.

After pumping gas, less than a mile into my trip home, my Jeep's started stalling, the power steering went off (I couldn't easily turn the steering wheel) and it died in the middle of the road. I turned the key in the ignition to the off position, then back on and I was able to started it. I only moved about 500 feet and then it happened again. I turned it off, back on again and the same thing happened a third time, as I was getting home. I sat on my parking spot and the Jeep was stalling but it didn't die again. I looked up Jeep forums and it seem to be a common problem and people resolve it by not filling the tank all the way. Needless to say it was a very scary experience and it could've easily caused an accident.

Upon refilling the gas tank to full from near empty, the car will immediately stutter and occasionally stall for up to five minutes. I discovered this upon pulling out into traffic and the engine turning off. This led to loss of power steering as well. Other cars had to immediately divert or collide into my car. Upon restarting the car did this three more times within 2 miles. No emergency lights or warning lights go off. This is allegedly a fuel system problem and the engine is "choking" due to a faulty sensor. This has occurred three times now.

Shortly after filling the gas tank of my 2007 Jeep Patriot (49xxx miles) I was coming to a 4 way intersection (only my side and the opposite side of the intersection has stop signs). As I was pulling through the intersection my Jeep Patriot stalled and I lost my power steering and brakes. I was almost struck on the passenger side by a vehicle traveling from the right side of the intersection from my orientation of the intersection. I tried to restart the vehicle for about 5 minutes to no avail. It would start and then immediately stall again. After almost being struck 5-6 times and after about 5 minutes of being stuck in the middle of an intersection I managed to start the vehicle up and drive it home by driving about 15 miles per hour on backroads for the remaining 2 miles to my house. After searching the internet to find the problem I found that this is a common issue among many Jeep Patriot/compass owners and nothing has been done to address the issue. Please look into this issue as myself and my passenger (fiancee) could have been seriously injured if not for sheer luck.

For the past year, after filling the gas tank and driving 1/2 to 1 mile the engine sputters/bucks and cuts off. This happens with every fill-up. Yes, every fill-up. I don't over fill, I just stop filling when the pump clicks off. I have to be very careful so as not to get into an accident. If this happened on the highway where I live, I could be killed. Filling up with gas causes engine to stall. Auto garage says it's the check ball for the fuel tank allowing for overfilling of tank and than fuel getting into the vacuum system which then cause the Jeep to stall within 5 mins. The last time it was in the middle of in intersection with the kids in the car and almost getting hit by a driver not playing attention while my husband pushed the Jeep out of the way till it wanted to start again.

After filling up the gas tank the car repeatedly stalls. It is not being over-filled. Not human error. Extremely dangerous. Stalls in traffic - no warning. Just quits. Repeatedly. Numerous trips to the dealer and lots of money spent and it was not repaired. Complained to Chrysler who recommended we take it to another dealer. We did. The entire fuel tank had to be replaced. Mechanics familiar with the problem. Nhtsa site documents 35 reports of the same problem. 16 reports in 2016. Numerous also in the 2008 Jeep. There needs to be an investigation into why no recall recommended.

I purchased this vehicle new in September of 2007. It currently has ~45,000 miles on it. Within the last year it began to stall after filling up with fuel. It may run for a short time. . . . . Long enough to pull out from the pump and into traffic and then stall. It has always restarted, but on occasion stalls again, or may buck. Fortunately, this has not resulted in an accident so far. For safety reasons, I have begun to let it run for a bit after filling before pulling into traffic. I do not top off the tank once the sensor shuts the pump off. If I shut off the pump before full, it has not stalled. I took it in to the dealership to have it checked out. They claimed not to have encountered this problem before, but I had found online forums where other owners discussed experiencing this problem. According to the dealership, the only remedy was to replace the fuel tank. . . An expensive proposition. I believe this is due to a design flaw and presents a serious safety concern.

I'm experiencing what I've found to be a well-documented issue with a vapor-liquid separator valve located in the gas tank of my 2007 Jeep Patriot. After fueling, moments after starting the car and putting it into drive, the car will stall and shut off. It will immediately re-start and run again but is pretty much guaranteed to shut off at every stop (I. E. At an intersection or while exiting the gas station) for the next few minutes. It also leads to hesitations of the engine while driving at full speed. This has happened to me the last four times I've filled my gas tank. On the most recent occasion, the engine stalled while in an intersection, as I started to make a left-hand turn. The engine shut off, the steering wheel locked up, and I had to throw it into park and restart the car while stalled in a lane of oncoming traffic. I'm very fortunate the oncoming vehicle was paying close attention and stopped to allow me to exit the intersection. This issue only occurs after filling the gas tank, when the vapor canister component that the valve is supposed to protect becomes flooded with liquid fuel during the fill. When this component purges its contents, the intake manifold is flooded with liquid fuel, rather than vapor, causing the stall. After driving several miles (presumably when all of the liquid fuel has been purged from the vapor canister), no more problems are seen until the tank is refilled. Some investigation has shown that I'm far from the only person to experience this dangerous defect. The faulty valve is located inside the gas tank, and the issue can only be resolved with a prohibitively-expensive replacement of the entire tank. This is absolutely a documented flaw inherent in several vehicle models in the Chrysler family, and it needs to be addressed before anyone is killed as a result.

Right after filling the gas tank my car sputtered and stalled while driving away from the gas station.

Unable to fill the tank without the pump clicking off every 2 - 3 seconds, despite having tried multiple gas stations and pumps. Mechanic advised there is a problem with the evap system and that the fuel tank will need to be replaced (possibly a faulty rollover valve on the tank). Aside from the fact that is takes forever to fill the tank, I have to guess at when my tank is full and risk overfilling since I can't rely on the usual "click" of the pump. Also, if it is a faulty rollover valve, I would consider this a pretty serious safety issue. I hope others experiencing a similar problem also file complaints here and with Chrysler/Jeep so a recall will be issued if needed.

Gas tank roll over valve: there seems to be a defective component at the top of the gas tank which is causing the vehicle to stall at least once after filling up the gas tank. This is a safety issue and should be recalled as it affects a lot of vehicles based on my searches.

Within a mile of filling up my gas tank the car stalls while driving and locks up the steering wheel.

On 4/7/2016 my Jeep Patriot completely stalled after filling it with gas. After waiting an hour, the car started up again. I read on the Jeep forums this is a common problem with Jeep's fuel tank, however Chrysler is unwilling to admit it and recall the part. This is a safety issue and not I'm scared to drive my car after getting gas for fear of losing power. I have a one year old son and fear for his life as well as mine. . Car engine dies after filling gas tank approximately 1 mile away from gas station every time. My car has died in an intersection when making a turn against oncoming traffic. Car usually dies after idling at a stop light and then upon acceleration it just dies. Car has 70,000 miles and from my research it seems to be a common problem.

After filling gas tank with fuel, after 30ish seconds the engine will stall and sometimes recover, sometimes quit. This happens regardless of whether I am stopped at a light/sign or driving. I have read numerous reports of others having this same issue. Seems that the charcoal canister is filling with gas. Please help make this a known issue for other drivers! this has happened over the last 3 or 4 months with my vehicle.
