Structural issue/rust - engine cradle - front cross member rusted through on underside of Jeep. The car broke down while we were traveling and had to have a cross member replaced at a dealership. The car ran but was noisy and unsafe to drive, and we were 4 hours from home. Despite having an oil change recently, we were not warned of the issue. The replacement cost about $1500 out of pocket.

37 Suspension problem of the 2011 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 07/09/2021

The front subframe rusted through on the left hand side which in turn caused the lower control arm to shift outward preventing full steering capabilities. There was a warranty extension dated back from 2017, brought into service on December of 2019, to the Chrysler dealership where it was purchased for lights on the cluster and a steering vibration and no one mentioned the subframe issue that was persisting on this model year. Was told rather that it needed a new bearing and a speed sensor. Replaced both and the issue wasn’t fixed. I am told now (July 2021) that this extension expired in March of this same year. Was told by both the dealer and the customer service hotline that there is absolutely nothing they can do. They also mentioned that there should have been a letter sent out for this warranty extension but nothing was ever received. Been at the same address since well before the purchase date of this vehicle.

42 Suspension problem of the 2011 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 03/23/2021

I purchased my 2011 Jeep Patriot from a car dealership in October of 2020. After a week of having the vehicle, I noticed a loud clunking sound coming from underneath. I took it back to the dealer and was told it was nothing. After taking it to my mechanic, he found major rust and corrosion on the front and rear subframe and crossmembers. I paid $2200 in repairs on the car, only to find out the he only did the front end of the car. The back end is just as bad and the car is unsafe for me to drive. When he did the front end of the car, the pieces fell apart as he began taking it apart. This car was a ticking time bomb. It’s now June of 2021 and I don’t know what to do.

43 Suspension problem of the 2012 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 02/26/2021

Took Jeep Patriot to firestone service center for full inspection. Upon completion of inspection was told by the tech that my vehicle had severe underbody rust/ rot and that the front and rear crossmembers needed to be replaced among many other components needed repair/replaced such as complete brake job, cv axles, gas tank bracket and two seized lug/studs. Apparently, fca has a warranty extension called x69 bulletin that repairs the crossmembers for rust/rot but it is only for vehicles manufactured before 24 January 2012. My vehicle was manufactured on may 2012. This is unacceptable. It is clear that this issue was not rectified for vehicles manufactured after 24 January 2012 and this issue should be subject to a full recall and not a narrow warranty extension. Broken/compromised crossmembers could result at a minimum of vehicle destruction and serious injury to driver/passengers and a maximum loss of life due to this manufacturing defect. The NHTSA should act accordingly and force fca to start a recall immediately.

This Jeep has been serviced many times at a Jeep dealer in the past and have never been informed of any rust . 50 Suspension problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 06/19/2020

I made a u-turn in my vehicle on a town street , as I completed the u-turn the vehicles rear suspension broke. The broken suspension made the vehicle feel like it was going over a rumble strip, the suspension being broke made the wheels turn in towards the wheel wells where it rubbed and eventually blew my tire. I was looking for a place to pull off safely. When I finally got it too a auto shop they told me the suspension rusted in two . It had to be moved with a flat bed. I had the vehicles front fixed in January of 2017 . Which was under the extended warranty because of complaints so the vehicles rear took an extra three years to rust out which is only two years over the warranty. I have enclosed a copy of bill from when then front was done.

57 Suspension problem of the 2011 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 12/15/2019

I was cleaning my Patriot 2011 when I notice that the subframe has holes. I also owen a 2008 Jeep Patriot and I got a recall for the same promblem. When I contacted the dealer about the same promblem they said they didnt had a recall for 2011 Jeep. My biggest worry when driven this vehicle I that at any moment the subframe may brake, me that I drive constaly on a highway it is a damgerous situation. I feel that all Jeep Patriot owners should be aware of dangers. I notice this because I was playing with my son and a ball went underneath the car. When driving the car I thought the cracking sound was the tires, but was told they were not. So now I am assuming the subframe is to blame. I would highly appreciate if something could be done.

58 Suspension problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 11/25/2019

I was going down fern valley road in louisville, ky and someone in front of me slammed on their brakes and to avoid collision I slammed on mine. I heard a crunch and when I took off my driver side tire sounded like it was squealing so I pulled off to the side of the road to see what was wrong. My driver side tire was cocked sideways and the passenger side was straight. I didn't know what had happened yet so I just got it towed. It appears the subframe has snapped due to a large amount of rust.

59 Suspension problem of the 2009 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 09/21/2019

The rear suspension crossmember has rusted out and failed on this vehicle. There are perforated holes in the subframe and rust all over this part. The underside of the unibody is in excellent condition. This is an obvious use of substandard steel or metal coatings for the part which led to its failure Jeep needs to be held accountable for using substandard steel in its production which create a hazard to everyone on the roadways. If this was a Toyota, they would replace it no questions asked even if it was out of warranty and there wasnt an NHTSA recall issued.

62 Suspension problem of the 2011 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 08/30/2019

While driving down the road after picking up my 3 children from daycare. I was going approximately 25mph and the front driver side tire folded outward. The sub frame and cross members apparently are defective. Unbeknownst to me there is a warranty 10 year/ unlimited mileage. There was also a class action lawsuit on Jeep Patriots/ compasses between 2001-2007 because of this issue. Instead of fixing the issue this company/ manufacturer has continued to use these defective parts on newer models such as mine. I might add for some odd reason the class action lawsuit doesn't cover my year although its the same defective sub frame and cross member parts. All they have done was offer this warranty, which I was never made aware of or told about by them or the dealer I made my purchase through. After my children and I nearly got seriously injured or killed did I look into this and found out. Due to these defective parts not only were we almost killed but the car suffered severe damage to the front end and the transmission as well as various other parts and components. I still have payments left on this automobile and it is completely inoperable and really hasn't gotten that much use compared to the amount I've paid already, not even counting what I still owe. I called the dealership and corporate office and they seem completely unconcerned and unhelpful in resolving this issue. I will never purchase a Jeep/ fiat/ Chrysler product ever again. These people put me and my family knowingly into a very unsafe vehicle and nearly got us killed. If I had been on the interstate doing 65mph and this had happened I would not be here writing this. All I can do is thank god it decided to fail when it did, not later on the interstate. To sum it up tire came off, lost steering control, ground to a halt in the street sideways, car fluids pouring all over road. Also have pictures of scene.

68 Suspension problem of the 2008 Jeep Patriot

Failure Date: 04/01/2019

I purchased my 2008 Jeep Patriot and found out it has a rotted crossmember subframe. Upon research I found out Jeep knew it had this issue in high salt areas and were responsible for fixing it. I tried to get it fixed at hartley's dealership in newport maine and they said the company is no longer honoring the repair, depite the incredible safety issue this causes. The vehicle can literally break in half and kill someone yet they haven't done a full recall? they did an extended warranty for it that has expired before I was informed about it. How are they not being held responsible for the safety issues they are having in so many of their vehicles? I feel like they should be recalled.
