Tank Mounting problems of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

22 problems related to tank mounting have been reported for the 2007 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2011

Each and every time I fill my gas tank the pump will cease the flow of gas from the nozzle and large quantities of gasoline will backwash/overflow from the tank. This is extremely dangerous for owners of Jeeps with this issue. God forbid if someone is smoking around the area. As silly as that idea may be remember who sued mcdonalds corp. For spilling hot coffee on themselves and won millions! just because they didn't tell you the coffee wasn't hot doesn't mean it's not common sense just as is gasoline spilling violently from your vehicles gas tank is very dangerous with the potential to cause large amounts of property damage and loss of life. The gas tank needs to be recalled and modified or replaced.

2 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2011

When refueling, a significant amount of gasoline spilled out after the pump automatically shut off. Within a second or 2 of the pump shutting off gas then flowed out of the tank filler tube. It splashed all over my pants and shoes along with the car itself.

3 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2011

Every time I fill up my 2007 Jeep Wrangler rubicon, gas will overflow when the pumps shuts off. The first few times, the overflow was a nominal spill. After the 4th or 5th time this occurred, the overflow amount is now a large gush of 1/2 to 1 gallon spilling broadly all over the vehicle and in a fairly wide range away from the vehicle. Chrysler claims the problem is not in their design, yet a fuel tank is not available -- is on back order from supplier. Based on a simple review of complaints, it appears this is not a problem unique only to my vehicle. I am concerned about being splashed with gasoline, or having gasoline splash out and ignite at a gas station.

4 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2010

When filling the fuel tank with fuel, the tank does not properly vent causing fuel to spurt out the filler neck as it approaches full. The gas spurts on the vehicle's 1/4 panel, on the person filling the vehicle and on the ground. This has happened now during the last several fill ups. You must also fill slowly or the gas nozzle shuts off as if the tank is full. I have an extensive automotive background and it is obvious that the tank is not properly venting. This occurs in boats when permanent mounted fuel tank vent lines become blocked or collapse over time.

5 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2010

When I refuel the vehicle and the fuel pump kicks off the gas spills back out of the vehicle. Not just a little amount either. It leaves a good size puddle that I have to go in a notify the store. Not to mention that it covers my shoes, hands, and some times clothes. This seems to happen when my fuel tank is very empty. It has happened several times and at several different gas stations.

6 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2010

When filling up my fuel tank on my 2007 Jeep Wrangler at any gas station an alarming amount of gasoline gushes out of the fuel filler neck after the fuel pump has automatically shut off. I do not recalling this happening when the vehicle was new, it's only recently that this has occurred. Probably started around 8 months ago. It does not appear to be gas pump specific, I've tried approximately 20 different gas stations over the amount of time that this has been occurring. Fuel spills out onto the vehicle, the ground and also myself. Sometimes to the point that I've had to change clothes due to fuel splashing onto my garments.

7 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

Every time the vehicle is filled with gasoline, gasoline exits the tank through the filler tube and splashes on the ground leaving a potential for fire. This happens at pumps at different stations in different states, different amounts of fuel within before fueling, and regardless of placement of the filling handle of the pump. The vehicle worked as it should for the first 25k miles and will not fill correctly since that time without leaving fuel on the ground. This is my second 2007 Jeep Wrangler and both have had this problem at approximately the same mileage. Each vehicle was filled with the correct gasoline as prescribed by the manual and all maintenance was done at a 5 star Jeep dealer on both. There appears to be a defect in the design of the gas system.

8 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2010

When fueling my Jeep Wrangler, fuel overflows before the pump shuts off. If I don't turn the pump off before the tank is full, a considerable amount of fuel spills out down the side of the Jeep and onto the ground.

9 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2010

Gas tank overfills almost every time, spills large amounts of gas. Problem is common to my vehicle and is not a result of user error.

10 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2010

When re-fueling tank, a large amount of fuel overflows from filler neck as tank is nearing full. This problem occurs every time fuel pump is not manually stopped prior to tank reaching capacity. No fires or injuries have occured, and nothing to date has been done to correct the problem.

11 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2010

Every time I fill up the tank of my 2007 Jeep Wrangler a substantial amount of gasoline is spewed from the filler hole. From what I've researched Chrysler's fix is to replace the gas tank; however, the problem eventually starts again.

12 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2010

When filling up the gas tank, no matter how slow I do it, there is an overflow and in a couple cases a forcible splash. It was so forcible this weekend that my pants and shoes were soaked. I have read on a Jeep forum that this is happening to a number of owners of the Jeep Wranglers. There are even a number of youtube videos documenting the situation. At the very least this is an environmental issue but it could escalate into something far more dangerous because of the amount of gas that overflows.

13 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2010

When filling the gas tank the tank overflows and spills out gas onto vehicle at end of cycle. The amount of gas appears to be 1 - 2 cups. This has been happening for over 6 months. Jeep dealer has had a new gas tank on order for 4 months.

14 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

2007 Jeep Wrangler jk (2 door) spits back fuel and spills about a cup of fuel when gas station pump shuts off. This happens at the end of filling the tank regardless of the pace the fuel is pumped (amount spilled is less at lower pump rate but still happens). This began happening about 2 months ago when vehicle had about 27,000 miles. It never happened before that. This is a potentially dangerous issues since it now happens every time the vehicle is fueled.

15 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2010

2007 Jeep Wrangler gas overflow when filling the gas tank. Quite a substantial amount of gas overflows when the gas tank is filled. Even when I try to slowly fill the tank it still overflows. This is a serious safety issue and is common among the jk model Jeep.

16 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2010

2007 Jeep Wrangler jk sahara - every time I fill up with gas, the pump will not automatically shut off until the gas overflows. I have spoken with quite a few other Jeep owners and they are all experiencing the same issues. This is very dangerous due to the amount of gasoline that is spilled onto the ground and could lead to a fire. The dealer indicates the only way to repair this issue is to replace the entire gas tank at my expense. I do not agree with this fact due to the fact that it is a safety concern and affects other owners more often than not.

17 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2009

In the past month the vehicle has begun to "spit up" gasoline when filling up at the service station. Whenever I fill the tank to full and the fill nozzle automatically cuts off, a good amount of gasoline comes up through the filler neck spilling out onto the ground. Various Jeep owners have encountered the same issue and have posted it on the net those that have sought to have the problem remedied have usually had a new tank installed and/or some sort of emissions valve replaced. My vehicle is out of warranty and my dealer will not even look at it without me paying a 'diagnosis' fee. Furthermore I cannot afford to pay for a new gasoline tank on a vehicle that's only 3 years old and has 27,300 miles! I have resorted to only filling my tank 3/4 of the way. I feel this presents various safety issues since there is a significant amount of gasoline spillage presenting a dangerous situation at the pump.

18 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

After the fuel pump at a gasoline station shuts off indicating my gas tank is full, gasoline spews back out of the tank through the opening where the gas pump nozzle is inserted once the nozzle is pulled out after fueling. The amount of fuel spilled is significant. I believe it could cause damage to my paint and plastic pieces on my vehicle and is also a fire and environmental hazard. This is not a result of continuing to pump fuel while removing the nozzle. The flow of fuel through the nozzle has stopped but pressure from inside the tank forces fuel out when the gas nozzle is removed. This has occurred on multiple occasions at multiple gas stations and did not occur earlier in the vehicle's history and does not occur when I am fueling other vehicles.

19 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2009

When filling the vehicle's gas tank the gas overflows out of the gas tank before the gasoline pump shots off. This has happened at many different gas stations. The amount of gas coming out is significant.

20 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

Starting about 12-15 gas fill-ups ago, my 2007 Jeep Wrangler unlimited 4x4 rubicon started to eject fuel out of the gas filler tube about a second after the pump automatically shut off. I have not changed any procedure during fill-ups and have used the same gas pumps and gas stations for the last 2 years -- this started out of the blue. When the gas overflows, it ejects with enough pressure to cover the gas cap hanging below with gas, and saturates the side of the Jeep and bumper, dropping a good amount of gas on the ground (probably about a 2. 5 - 3 foot radius of a puddle). The first time it happened, my hand was covered in gas, and I estimate about a half gallon of gas was ejected. It now happens every time during a fill-up unless I stop the gas pump before the tank is close to full. I have listened attentively during a few fill-ups, and have shut off the pump once I hear a change in sound that the tank is near full -- and this still results in fuel ejecting from the filler tube, but just not as much. I can no longer rely on the pump auto shut off even at low filling speeds, and I can no longer fill the tank to it's previously normally full capacity. I am very concerned about the safety of this, not only to me and my passengers, but the other patrons around me -- not to mention the environmental impact of the gas spills. There are no known fixes, and it appears, according to Jeep forums, that this is becoming a very common problem, with the latest updates that Chrysler completely replacing gas tanks only under warranty, and with no apparent updates to keep it from occurring again in the future. My Jeep has just come out of warranty around the end of September, due to mileage. I now have 40,000 miles on the Jeep, and I estimate this started at about 35,000 miles.

21 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2009

Started having a problem with my 2007 Jeep Wrangler unlimited at around 50k miles. When filling up at a gas station on a trip to the mountains. When the auto shutoff at the pumped clicked off the gas came spewing out of the file hole. I considered it a one time fluke and that possibly the gas pump was defective. As time went on it did not matter what gas station I went to the problem occurred more and more frequently. Now the only way to avoid an overflow is to stop filling at around 15 gallons and slowly top off the tank by carefully listening for the fuel level and easing the fuel into the tank. My concern is the amount of fuel spilling out on the pavement is a safety hazard. One spark could be disastrous for myself of someone who follows me at the pump. I have read where many other Jeep owners with the same year and model are experiencing a similar problem. I feel this issue needs to be addressed with Chrysler corporation before someone gets hurt.

22 Tank Mounting problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2007

This vehicle has had a problem with the gas tank overflowing since it was almost new. Jeep has refused to recognize that this is a design flaw and refuses to take responsibility for the environmental and safety hazard that this flaw causes each and every time these Jeeps are fueled up. At the point of filling up, the gas tank overflows sending large amounts of gas on the side of the Jeep and onto the ground. This is a terrible fire and environmental hazard that could lead to public injury and even death if it caused a fire. I would be happy to provide a video of this problem occuring if needed to get this addressed. Absent action being taken here, I am not sure where to turn other than mainstream media to get action to be taken.
