34 problems related to air bag not deploy have been reported for the 2008 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 05/04/2020

I was traveling at around 45mph rear ended a stopped vehicle on the freeway and my airbag did not deploy. I fractured my hand.

2 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2017

~tl the contact owned a 2008 Jeep Wrangler. While driving approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel suddenly and erroneously turned to the left. As a result, the contact drove into the opposite lane facing oncoming traffic. A second vehicle crashed into the passenger side door of the contact's vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. The front seat passenger sustained a fractured right leg, and injuries to the ribs, head, and right hip. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 150,000.

3 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2016

While driving my 2008 Jeep Wrangler the clocksrping malfunctioned and broke while going around a turn on my neighborhood street. My air bag light came on and a small ribbon came out of the steering column. This also disabled my horn. When I took it to my mechanic he asked about a recall on this part because this is not a common issue. I looked and saw that there in fact was a recall on the right handed vehicles for 2008 but not left handed drive vehicles as well as 2007 Jeeps had the recall. I am hopeful that this can also be recalled in 2008 left hand drive vehicles as it is not something that should go bad unless your vehicle is left in the rain dust or dirty environments, which is not how my Jeep is ever stored. I am happy that I was on a neighborhood street when this happened and that the air bag did not deploy!.

4 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2016

The airbag light comes on intermittently when the vehicle is in motion. I've been told that the clock spring is what is causing it. This same part has been recalled on the rhd vehicle but not the lhd. Ive been told that this could cause the airbags to not deploy in the event of a crash. I also see this is becoming a very common problem on this year model.

5 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2015

The air bag light came on and dings every 30 secs, the horn doesn't work. I made an apt with the dealership there was no sense of urgency to get me in, dropped it off on a Friday to be told to bring it back today. They quickly diagnosed the problem as air bag clockspring wiring failure and explained if I were in an accident the air bags would not deploy. This is a $420. 00 fix to repair a safety issue, and lucky for me they happen to have the part just laying around. Sounds to me that this is a common problem with Jeep. Jeep has a recall for right hand drive vehicles but not for the left like I have.

6 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2015

July 10, 2015: driving to work approximately 8:15 am cst. Car in front of me stopped suddenly and I felt the breaks were not slowing the vehicle down enough to avoid impact. With a vehicle on my right, my only option was to go left. I never saw the truck in the oncoming lane and hit head on. The airbag did not deploy on the driver's side. It did deploy on the passenger side, but no one else was in the vehicle with me. The upper body portion of the seat belt did not restrain me and I slammed face first into the steering wheel. I suffered a broken and dislocated wrist that required surgery, severe bruising of face, arms, chest, hips and legs. I feel this is a huge safety concern and should be rectified immediately.

7 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2015

The clockspring in the steering column has failed causing the air bag warning light to intermittently alarm. This indicates that the airbag will not deploy in the event of a crash. This vehicle is left hand drive.

8 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

Air bag light is on. Horn and cruise also quit working when this occurred. Rear ended a lady last fall and airbag failed to deploy, not sure it should have but still didn't. Can not ever fill the gas tank full due to fuel spilling out of the fill tube onto the ground, can get slightly more that 3/4 full.

9 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2015

Airbag light and chime come on intermittently, but nearly constantly. This indicates that the airbag will not deploy in the event of a crash. Based on online research, the likely cause is that the clock spring has gone bad, and this is a common problem for Jeep Wranglers from 2007 to present. There is not, however, a recall that covers the replacement of the clock spring, so owners are stuck with a bill to the tune of $500 if the want to fix it and have working airbags.

10 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2014

Started my Jeep early Saturday morning. My air bag indicator light came on as normal, but did not shut off like usual. I was a bit worried to drive it as I assume the air bag will not deploy in the event of an accident. However I chose to drive anyhow. The indicator light will go off but quickly comes back on at around 20-30mph. Followed by a ding each time it returns back on. As it turns out, my mechanic scanned my Jeep, bringing up the code of a faulty airbag, clock spring. As a safety issue, I was concerned and called Chrysler customer service dept to see if a recall had been issued. Unfortunately, nothing for my VIN# is coming up. So that means I am on my own in repairing this safety issue. My vehicle is not covered under warranty. So that means I am to pay out of pocket. Dealership parts department has them in stock, but they cost $270 only in parts. Not including labor to install the clock spring. Please be aware this is a very known issue in most newer Jeep jk's. I follow many forums for my Jeep. Almost every single one of them talk about this known issue. Yet Chrysler is not stepping up and handling this in a safe manner. I am throughly disappointed in them and upset now I have no active airbag. Till I save enough cash to have this clock spring installed. :-( please pray nothing happens to me and my family. As it will be an expensive choice Chrysler is making. Thanks for your time. . Angela.

11 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2014

Airbag, abs and esc lights all come on and won't turn off. Meaning airbags may not deploy if in accident and abs may fail when braking. Esc has been randomly kicking in which cuts power to my powertrain and causes a safety hazard when in traffic and my vehicle suddenly slows and cannot maintain speed. Recalls have been done on the right hand drive models from 2008-2011, and the left hand drive model for 2007. This appears to be same issue (clockspring) as the recalls and is a safety concern that the dealer is not taking responsibility for.

12 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2013

My passenger side airbag warning light is flashing periodically and chiming. No one in the seat. And even if they are in the seat and have safety belt connected (properly). From the information I have read. . The airbag will not deploy if the warning light is on. I understand there are some vehicles with recall notices for the clockspring module; however mine is not one of them. . Read more...

13 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2013

Airbag light came on, with audio indicator. Noticed when turning steering wheel hard right or left, the light would go out. When returned to near straight, the light and chime would come on, indicating airbag problems. After conducting a quick internet search, it was found that a fault clockspring was the problem. This has been well documented safety issue on Jeep Wrangler vehicles. It is well documented with all years involved, including 2014. There is a safety recall for Jeep vehicles with a right hand drive. This safety issue causes great concern that the airbag may not deploy when required, or it may deploy at any given time, causing an accident. Daimler Chrysler has been contacted about this problem, but refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying.

14 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2013

My airbag light is constantly on and my cruise control no longer works. I am a lhd 2008 Wrangler and as I have seen across the internet this is a huge problem. Why is there no recall on the lhd 2008 Wranglers when there is for the rhd and 2007 lhd Wranglers. The same clock springs are used in all these vehicles and they are faulty across the board. This needs to be a recall as my airbag will not deploy if I get into an accident. Chrysler is responsible and should be held accountable for this issue in my model yr and lhd. It doesn't matter if I am sitting, drive or whatever the airbag light is always on as soon as I start the engine and my cruise control does not work.

15 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2013

On August 10th on a trip to tulsa while I had my cruise set on or about 70mph I received an airbag alert on my dash. Since that alert it has continued to alert approximately every 3-5 min while you drive. Today I was informed by my dealer that is was a faulty clock spring which may or may not cause the airbag not to deploy in the event of an accident and it may or may not deploy without provocation. Upon research this is a widespread issue with this particular model Jeep and clearly is a safety hazard. There should be a forced safety recall on this part.

16 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2013

Was driving in subdivision, and air bag indicator light came on with chime. The problem persisted, and I took it to the dealership, (after calling Chrysler) they indicated that this issue was not covered by any warranty, or special re-call. In talking to the mechanic and asking if there was a possibility that airbags would deploy without warning, or reason, he indicated that as long as the airbag indicator light is on, and there is an error code, the airbags would not deploy even if needed. I feel that this faulty clock spring is, (and or should be) recalled for a safety issue, as I have read many forums of people experiencing the same issues. . . I was told that the replacement part alone, was $300. 00, and the additional labor is $213. 00 for instalation. . Chrysler has placed their vehicle owners in a financial bind, forcing their customers to pay additional fees over and above the cost of the vehicle for simple vehicle safety. This part should be recalled and available to all Jeep Wrangler vehicle owners to rectify potential problems that may arise from non- deploment of airbags if needed in an accident.

17 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2013

I took my vehicle into john elway greeley CO. May 16, 2013 to have the safety light for my airbags diagnosed. They found it was the clock spring that had been recalled in 2007 right hand drive vehicles but my vehicle did not have a recall on this particular part. The part is defective and in back order status with no availability date. I had to pay for this part to get on the waiting list for a part that has no availability date. In the mean time my vehicle is no longer safe because the airbags with not deploy if for some reason I am in an accident.

18 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2013

The airbag light turns on and off, indicating that there is an intermittent malfunction with the airbag system. The problem is a simple part - the clock spring in the steering that connects the airbag to the control module. If the system malfunctions before or during a crash, the airbag will not deploy, and could cause serious injury or death. I am shocked that this safety issue is not being recognized or covered by Jeep!.

19 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2013

As per my ase certified mechanic has directed me. My airbag light has started turning on and off and causing the chime several times a day due to a clockspring in the steering wheel going bad. This is a known recall for previous years including the 2007 model (1yr difference). I'm afraid that in an actual crash the air bag will not deploy or that it will at any random moment.

20 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2012

Dodge dealership has inspected my Jeep for an airbag warning light illuminated. I have an extended warranty from millennium and the will not cover the repair. The problem has been diagnosed as a faulty clock spring. This is a lhd vehicle. The recall id 94030 is for the rhd Jeep. If left hand drive Jeeps are having the same problems, how can this just be on the right hand drive only? recall id # 94030 - air bags:frontal component air bags:frontal model affected Wrangler potential units affected 5437 recall date: Nov 02, 2011 model affected: 2008 Jeep Wrangler summary: Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 right hand drive (rhd) Jeep Wrangler vehicles manufactured from February 1, 2007, through October 10, 2011. Some vehicles may be equipped with driver's airbag clockspring assemblies that could experience a compromised airbag circuit resulting in an airbag lamp illumination, which indicates that the airbag may not deploy. Consequences: a broken electrical circuit in the airbag clockspring wiring assembly can lead to non-deployment of the driver frontal airbag and will not be able to properly protect the driver in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injuries. Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners and remedy the vehicles as necessary free of charge. Chrysler will mail to owners an interim notification during March 2012. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Potential units affected: 5437.

21 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 10/11/2012

Airbag light and chime activate when turning. Was diagnosed as faulty clock spring mechanism. Was told it was not under warranty and if not fixed airbags may not deploy.

22 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2012

2008 Jeep Wrangler with 20000 miles. Clock spring failed leaving me with a dinging every time I turn the steering wheel. 2007 Wranglers have an extended warranty but 2008s do not. Sounds like Jeep is admitting something is wrong but limiting their damage monetarily by limiting the affected years. Anything that has a chance that of making airbags not deploy, which I'm sure there is a law that says vehicles need airbags, not, have airbags that are made with parts that make the airbag not work after 20000 miles. What next? seatbelts that unhook over a certain speed?.

23 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2012

Driver airbag dash light on. When making right turn light turns off, then returns with chime when steering returns to straight. Dealer states the airbag light indicates the airbag may not deploy. Dealer suggests an airbag clockspring assembly failure as seen on other similar models (and recalled on rhd model).

24 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2012

My 2008 Jeep Wrangler unlimited rubicon lhd indicates a fault with the airbag system. When pulling out from an intersection the airbag warning light came on with an accompanying chime. The light now flashes on and off with its chime regularly during average city driving. An existing recall and subsequent warranty extension has been granted for previous model year Wranglers and rhd Wranglers, the problems noted in the reports for those vehicles appear the same as the faults I am experiencing in my vehicle. I believe this fault puts my wife at risk if, in the event of a collision the airbag will not deploy because of a faulty clock spring on the steering column.

25 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2012

My 2008 Jeep Wrangler airbag light turned on an wouldn't turn off. We took it to the local dealer and they just told us that they can't find anything wrong on the scan but the only way to turn off the sensor is to replace the airbag at $750. 00. Really? nothing wrong but it will cost $750. 00 plus labor to turn off the sensor light? does this mean the airbag works or not? seems many are having this problem and is Jeep waiting for an airbag not to deploy and have someone killed before the recall starts? any advice is helpful!.

26 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2012

Airbag light stays on. Mechanic says the clock spring is faulty. This is a problem with many Jeep owners that I know. This is a safety hazard, because the airbag may not deploy in a collision.

27 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2012

Airbag warning light just started sounding randomly not due to any adverse driving condition or extreme maneuvering. Took it to dealer charged $75 for them to tell me it would cost another $450 and that the airbags may or may not deploy.

28 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2012

The airbag light stays on which indicates that the airbag may not deploy. This is a safety issue big time!!!.

29 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2011

The airbag light stays on 99% of the time. I have the same problem as described in the NHTSA action # pe11019. 30 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2011

2008 rhd Jeep Wrangler air bag light is on meaning airbag will not deploy if an accident occurs. Clock spring/corrosion issue causing horn not to work which is a safety hazard. Many mail carriers are having the exact same problems with these vehicles. Vehicle will not always start. This whole vehicle should be recalled as it has major electrical issues. The motor went out on mine at 52,000 miles. The warranty is only for 36,000 miles. The motor was rebuilt by a Jeep dealer and I was told it had a spun bearing. The air blower controller also does not work half of the time. These rhd Jeeps are all lemons and pose safety hazards to mail carriers who spend most of their day out on the road. The horn issue is a threat to the public as you cannot warn an unsuspecting driver or pedestrian of your precese. The airbag issue is a threat to the driver. You spend $25,000 on a vehicle, you expect better.

31 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2011

The warranty has been extended to 150,000 miles on the 2007 Wranglers, but not on the 2008 Wranglers. They are the same part number, why was Chrysler not forced to extend the warranty on 2008's? the cockspring failure causes the airbag to not deploy.

32 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2011

In June of 2011, my 2008 Jeep Wrangler (lhd) had to be serviced due to the illumination of the airbag light. It was determined that this was due to a malfunction of the clockspring and was replaced. At the time, my Jeep had about 52000 miles. I just encountered the same problem again and took my Jeep back in to the dealer. I am now having to replace the clockspring a second time and my vehicle has about 74500 miles as of this month (December 2013). I am very frustrated because not only does Jeep not cover these malfunctions (twice!), but it is also a huge safety concern because the airbags will not deploy with a defective clockspring/illuminated airbag light. Jeep has issued a recall on the part for the 2007 models and the 2008-2012 (rhd) models only. Unfortunately, those of us with defective clocksprings in our 2008-2012 lhd models are forced to pay an average of $500 for the repair or be forced to drive in an unsafe vehicle with an airbag system that will not deploy. Not only has mine gone out once, but twice! in both cases, my clockspring has malfunctioned without any known cause. This was verified by the technicians who replaced the parts. This is a central safety component and a huge safety concern. This is not a component that should just wear out like brakes and tires. I should not have to replace it every so often like getting an oil change. I can understand (perhaps) getting a faulty part, call it bad luck, but not getting the same faulty part twice. I can understand that it is not cost effective, or enough people have not died (fortunately) from the clockspring, for Jeep to issue a recall on the part, but at least cover individuals on a case-by-case basis especially if the part has failed twice. For Jeep to not replace the part is poor customer service and dangerous to my family and I.

33 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2011

Air bag indicator light stays on continuously. Air bag alarm sounds when steering wheel is turned on tight corners. Obd ii fault code b1bo2 clockspring. Thus, the airbags will not deploy. This should be a safety recall, as it is for the prior year and same year with steering wheel on the right of the vehicle.

34 Air Bag Not Deploy problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2011

Clockspring in steering column is of poor design, less than 50 thousand miles on vehicle. Airbag light is constantly going on and off when you turn the steering wheel. Airbags may or may not deploy in an accident depending on if you are going straight or turning. Dealer says they have had several peole come in with same issue and thet the clockspring controls the airbags but they are unwiling to cover it as warranty has expired. How many people are going to pay the 500 dollars to get the part replaced and how many people are just going to risk it?.
