63 problems related to air bag light on have been reported for the 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2014

Airbag light and chime continues to come on. After research, this is an clockspring issues that apparent on numerous Jeep. A recall was submitted for 2007 models for this issue, but not on 2008 and newer models.

37 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2014

While driving on a city street my air bag light illuminated and I got an audible chime. The light would turn on and off every 10-15 miles and chime each time. Now, nearly a month later, the light stays on almost all the time. Through online research, I've found that the likely cause of this is the clock spring in the steering column. It looks like if it's not corrected there is a possibility that the air bag won't go off in the case of a collision. I know that certain year model of the Wrangler are covered by a previous recall. I'd really like to see the recall extended to all year models that utilized the same defective part.

38 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/05/2013

The air bag light continually comes on. No accidents. Dealer told me it was clockspring and is was only covered under basic warranty which is now expired. I didn't know safety related components are only warranteed for 36mo, 36k miles. Tell that to my three year old who rides in this vehicle daily with me.

39 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2013

Drivers air bag light goes on and off intermittently and randomly.

40 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2013

Air bag light/chime began illuminating frequently (approximately once every few minutes) throughout the course of every drive, regardless of distance or speed. I took vehicle to dealer for inspection where it was determined the clockspring was defective. Part was replaced under a consumer purchased extended warranty.

41 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2013

While traveling down a public dirt road (fire road) at approximately 10 mph a "ding" was heard. When I looked down a the instrument cluster the airbag indicator was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to hunter dogde located in palmdale, CA. On 21aug13 where it was diagnosed to have a bad clock spring mechanism.

42 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2013

Airbag light came on while pulling out of residence. The horn nor the cruise control currently work. After some research online, discovered there are many instances of this exact problem (clockspring). Chrysler acknowledges problems with the clockspring in the right hand drive version of Jeep Wrangler, and the 2007 left hand drive models, but nothing after. After speaking with Chrysler, they told me they simply "don't care, because weve never heard of a single complaint regarding it", which is quite surprising considering all the complaints I was able to find online.

43 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2013

The airbag light actuated and upon further research I have found that it is symptomatic with the clock spring in the steering column. I contacted a dealership and Chrysler with no resolution. There is a recall out for the clock spring in 2008-2012 models but it is in a limited lot number. The airbag light is intermittent and only when the steering wheel is rotated.

44 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2013

Vehicles air bag light blinked and alarm sounded. This would go on and off for a few days then stayed on all the time. Vehicle was brought to dealer and they indicated it was a bad clock spring. The repair cost was $507. 39 to harr Jeep in worcester MA July 13, 2013. I contacted Jeep and they indicated although the vehicle and part fell into a recall period, only rh drive vehicles were recalled. This has been a problem with many Wranglers, different years and configurations, as well as other Jeep vehicles including the cherokee and liberty. Jeep informed me the part was not designed to last for the "life of the vehicle", and therefore was my responsibility. I believe this ongoing problem for Jeep extends to my vehicle and many others like it. I have great concern when the primary safety component in the vehicle does not last the life of the vehicle. This safety issue can cause a failure of the airbag system. Jeeps irresponsibility in recalling this puts thousands of drivers at risk each day. The high cost of repair will lead to many operators using the vehicle with the system compromised by this fault. I requested reimbursement from Jeep for this repair stating the similarities of my problem to others identified by Jeep as recalls. I also shared my concern of consumer safety. Jeep basically said its the owners problem.

45 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2013

Last night I turned my car on. . . I noticed the airbag light stayed on longer than usual it went of but a couple minutes later it lighted up again for a couple seconds and from then it has been doing it, while driving it I noticed that my cruise control and horn are not working. I read a lot about the issue and I can for sure say its the clock spring, this makes a lot of sense when I bought the car in 2009 I received the car with a broken clock spring I had to go back the next day so they could replace it.

46 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2013

My air bag light came on and would not go out. I brought the vehicle to my local auto service. After testing it was found that the clock spring needed to be replaced. This is a normal left hand drive Jeep Wrangler 2009. I understand that this was a problem in previous years and was on recall during those years. Driving the vehicle with the light on is a safety problem that needs to be yet resolved by Jeep. I am looking to hae my money refunded for the correction of this safety problem. I have the part and numbers are on the part. How do I backtrack thses numbers. This part may have been a 2008 part used in the following years production.

47 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2013

I have not been in an accident yet, but a year ago I started having electrical issues inside the steering wheel of my 2009 Jeep Wrangler. I was told it is called the clock spring. With a bad clock spring, my horn and cruise control does not work, and also my air bag light is always on. If I were to get into an accident I do not feel safe knowing my air bags are not working properly. Also, with a bad clock spring there are chances of my air bag activating randomly for no reason so that really worries me. I have almost been wrecked into several times and I am not able to honk my horn. When I took it to the local dealership, I was basically told that it has been a very common problem in 2008-2012 jk Jeep Wranglers but they did not have the part to fix it. I figured there would be a recall for it since it is such a common problem, but only the right hand drive Jeep Wranglers had a clock spring recall. I believe the recall number for those are m31 and l37. I don't understand why the left hand drive 2009 jk Jeep Wranglers are excluded from this recall. This is very hazardous and I feel unsafe knowing my air bags may not work and also knowing I could potentially cause an accident if my air bags go off randomly. Not only that, but I know more Jeeps like mine that are driving around with the same problem. I would really appreciate it if this issue could be looked into. Thank you for your time.

48 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2012

Airbag light continually goes off and on while driving.

49 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2012

About three or four days prior to the incident, I noticed upon starting the vehicle(2009 Jeep Wrangler rubicon - lhd), that the airbag indicator light on the dashboard was lit, indicating that the airbag was not functioning. I had noticed previously that the airbag light would come on, and then go away, so I thought nothing of it. However, on the date of the incident, as I drove the vehicle and was turning the steering wheel, I heard what sounded like a thin plastic wrapper "crinkling" as if caught between the stationary part of the steering column and the rotating rear section of the steering wheel. When I stopped the vehicle, I noticed a flat strip plastic encased copper wire leads appeared to be unraveling from between the stationary portion of the steering column and the rotating rear section of the steering wheel. I drove the vehicle to my auto repair garage, and the technician identified the part as the airbag clockspring assembly. The assembly apparently failed during normal vehicle use and now results in a reduced level of protection for myself in the event of accident. After researching the matter, I have discovered that many other owners of 2008, 2009 and 2010 Jeep Wranglers (lhd) have experienced similar failures with their airbags. The repair garage advised me that there was a recall on rhd Jeep Wranglers of the same model years for the same assembly.

50 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2012

Air bag light stays on horn wont work and cruise control in-op common problem and expensive to repair.

51 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2012

Made a left hand turn from a stop sign and the air bag light went on and has not gone off since. Jeep has informed me I am at risk because the air bag will not function in the event of a collision. I have been informed only right hand drive Wranglers have been recalled for this and the warranty has been extended for ten years. This is a costly repair. It makes no sense to me how or why this issue does not warrant a recall.

52 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2012

We have a 2009 right hand drive 4 door Wrangler. It is used for postal work. Air bag light keeps going off and on. There is a recall for this but Chrysler will not honor it on ours for some reason there is a recall number of11v528000 air bags frontal. They want us to pay for all work on this and it should be included in recall. In the meantime airbags will not work if needed.

The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler 4-door 4x4. The contact stated that the air bag light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the failure was the result of a reversed wiring system. 57 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

Air bag light starting going off and on in my 2009 Jeep Wrangler xunlimited about 62,000 miles. Now it is on more than off. Dealer says they can't determine what the cause is unless the light is on while they hook it up for diagnostic testing. Have reviewed various other complaints online about this problem and was told to report to your website. It is a right hand drive rural mail Jeep. I believe Chrysler needs to recall these vehicles.

58 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2011

All three of our same like vehicles at work have same problem. After your gas just cuts off you can count a second or two and gas come flying out where you put it in. Just do a search on utube and you can see a perfect example of this. Put in something like Jeep Wrangler fueling. Also all three of our four door Jeep 2009 Wrangler right hand drive air bag lights are on. There has been a recall for this but Jeep will not do anything fore us. In the meantime our airbags will not work. The recall number is 11v528000 air bags frontal. They say our ours are not part of the recall. This is crazy. What can we do. Thank you.

59 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

The air bag light has come on and stayed on. This has happened on my previous right hand Jeep also. Several mail carriers right hand Jeeps have had the same problem of the spring causing the air bag light to come on as well as affecting the cruise control.

60 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2010

The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The contact was driving approximately 65 mph when the esp/bas warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel which resulted in a complete loss in the vehicle stability control. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. The clock spring module was being replaced for the second time within one year. The failure mileage was approximately 14,400. 62 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

As with hundreds of other left hand steer Jeep owners, our airbag light is on, horn does not work, and cruise control is inoperative. Nhtsa and Jeep have deemed it okay to repair these problems on the right hand steer which is a very small percent of all Jeeps. Get on it, start the recall, it is unsafe, and why should we have to pay the price when Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler know this is an issue. I have been trying to get this fixed and talking to other 2009 owners since March of 2010. Let's go.

63 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2010

My airbag light came on and horn would randomly honk. Dealer advised they fixed the clock spring. This occurred approximately four years ago; however, it is doing it again. Mine is left hand drive. Right hand drives were recalled and it makes no sense for the others not to have been recalled when it is doing it again!! when it was repaired the first time, dealer did not have updated part. I'm now penalized and have to pay out of my pocket for Chrysler's faulty part. I read the recall and rhd units because they have windows down and this is "severe duty. " please understand this is a poorly sealed convertible and dust is simply part of a Jeep Wranglers existence. Either way, the problem should not be limited to rhd; it should include all those that manifest the problem or see similar severe duty.
