Last night a fire truck (hook and ladder) showed up in my driveway. I went out to see what was going on. As I walked out the door I noticed three firemen looking under and around my 2002 Jeep Wrangler. When I asked what was going on the firemen indicated that there was a strong smell of gas reported by on of my neighbors!
turn out the smell was gasoline and was indeed originating from my 2002 Jeep Wrangler. We brought the Jeep into the shop and the dealership was able to diagnose the cause and informed me that there was a solenoid purge value associated with the fuel system that went bad and when this happens the excess fuel is discharged out the exhaust system and that was what we were smelling. The failure of this component causes the vehicle to run rich, foul spark plugs, reduce mileage and yes, there's the concern over the excess fuel, not to mention the "check engine light" was also now on. The Jeep has ~32k miles and is now past 3 years (3yr/36miles) however we purchased the "extended warranty" which as it turns out does not cover this failed component. Cost $180. 00 to us. My concerns:
1. Fire hazard? the smell was very strong! strong enough to warrant a visit by the local fire department!
2. Fuel economy. . . . $2. 15/gallon for 87 octane
3. Environmental concerns? the way I understand it is the excess fuel is routed straight out the exhaust system! do I really want to go off reading with this vehicle spewing excess gasoline out the exhaust as I take in the sights and sounds of the road less traveled?
my question:
is this component failure common? is the failure mode environmentally friendly? are there any concerns to my well being in the event we have a recurrence? has anyone seen this before?.

The main issue of concern is what I describe as surging, what I mean is the vehicle wants to go without any input from the driver. What I have determined is that the vehicle has a fluctuating idle rpm as opposed to a steady idle rpm and when the idle rpm drops below an acceptable level the computer sends a signal to kick the throttle and the vehicle then surges. I have reported this problem to my dealer and they responded by saying they couldn't verify the concern. A CO-worker recently purchased the same vehicle type, engine transmission and so on and has reported the same issue to her dealer and was also told that the concern was not verifiable.

My 1997 Jeep Wrangler sputters when I touch the gas from neutral to first to second. . . The engine doesnt cut off, I just lose all power and then it catches. . . Had filters, plugs, and wires all replaced. . This is very dangerous. . Other owners have similar problems yet the manufacturer has made no attempt to remedy this problem.

The dealerstates "Chrysler said a 4 cylinder automatic will top out a 64mph. " this Jeep loses power at 60mph and even when floored will not reach 70mph. It also had a fuel injector replaced at 179miles.

Multiple failures since September, 1998. After warm-up, then 20 minute cool -down, car will not accelerate, backfires and off to nothing, then catches and goes. Have replaced fuel pump, engine crank sensor and $700 tuneup done- no luck.
Chrysler states that environmental laws will not allow them to replace the computer in my Jeep which is the problem. Dangerous driving into traffic and I don't get any gas, just sputters. Almost been rear-ended countless times in the past 13 months. Please help!.
Tranfer case failed to work properly while away from home in snow/ice storm leaving me with a vehicle that wasn't working as a 4 wheel drive. In August, the vehicle started experiencing severe hestation from stop and almost caused a serious accident when pulling into traffic.
At speeds of 10 mph, while in neutral or first gear, the rpms drop to almost zero and vehicle stalls, but catches itself to normal. It happens, especially when accessories such heat/defroster, etc. Are on.
The engine stalls when shifting from first to second gear. Dealer has seen vehicle twice, and said vehicle needed a new fuel rail.
