While filling up the gas tank, my Jeep will frequently spit the fuel back at me when it approaches being full. This almost always results in a significant amount of fuel left on the ground and inside the gas cap area. The gas will also spray all over the vehicle's operator and their clothing. This is definitely a potential fire hazard. A quick search on Jeepforum. Com reveals that this is a well-known issue among Jeep owners. I've found the following threads that reference this exact problem. . Read more...

When refueling the vehicle, fuel pump never shuts off. This has been a problem with the vehicle now for a long time. The fuel system allows the pump to continue running after the tank is full. It does not matter what gas station I go to. Gasoline always overflows and spills out onto the ground. I was recently refueling my and the vehicle and the pump did not shut off. A substantial amount of gas flowed out onto the ground and something lit the fuel vapors causing a small fire. I was able to put it out with an extinguisher. This could have caused the entire gas station to catch fire/explode and is extremely dangerous.

A large amount of fuel violently erupts from tank mouth when filling and overflows onto the vehicle, ground & myself. This occurs at each complete fill-up. This 2005 Jeep Wrangler sporadically trips obd-2 check engine codes for emission evaporative components, in the p0440-p0456 range.
When filling tank, just prior to the pump auto shutoff, fuel sprays out of the gas tank, sprayed all over me and ran out all down my vehicles side. This has happened to me the last 3 times I have filled my tank and is very dangerous. The total amount of fuel that sprays out is approximately 1/16th to 1/8th of a gallon.

Gas tank overfill issue. During fill ups the pump will shut off automatically as intended. Within seconds a quantity of gas will surge from the filler neck and leak down the side. The quantity is a significant amount. Per my records from previous fill ups (where this is not an issue) no significant change in quantity of gas or mileage driven has occurred. Attempts to limit the problem by filling up at 1/2 tank did not help. Slowing the fill rate does not help most of the time.

Gas tank spits back out gas as soon as the filling stops. There is enough gas lost to spill down the side of the Jeep and onto the ground. I have used different pumps at the same station and finally went to other stations and the same has happened each time I gas up my vehicle. I just returned from the Jeep dealership and they told me the problem was in the check valve and I would need a costly replacement of the whole tank. I see now that this is a common problem with this gas tank. Losing even a small amount of gas is costly not to mention the potential danger of free gas spilling out. A recall is needed which is not limited to only certain years.
When filling up the gas tank the fuel will spit back out of the tank. This creates a significant amount of fuel being shot back at the person filling up the vehicle and it also creates an environmental hazard. This has occured on the last two occasions when re-fueling the vehicle.

Whenever I add gasoline (from any station), a considerable amount of fuel will slosh back out of the filler right before the pump kicks off. Checking with the dealer and other sources, it's a known problem. However, Jeep is only concerned with fixing the 2007 and newer jk models. Their fix for those models is an extension of the warranty. My other sources say that it's rampant in years prior as well. The dealer service manager says it's the "rollover valve" that goes bad. The valve isn't repairable. The entire fuel tank needs replaced.
Each and every time I fill my gas tank the pump will cease the flow of gas from the nozzle and large quantities of gasoline will backwash/overflow from the tank. This is extremely dangerous for owners of Jeeps with this issue. God forbid if someone is smoking around the area. As silly as that idea may be remember who sued mcdonalds corp. For spilling hot coffee on themselves and won millions! just because they didn't tell you the coffee wasn't hot doesn't mean it's not common sense just as is gasoline spilling violently from your vehicles gas tank is very dangerous with the potential to cause large amounts of property damage and loss of life. The gas tank needs to be recalled and modified or replaced.

When filling vehicle gasoline sprays out of the tank in large amounts. It sprays out with such force it will cover your legs if you are standing near by.
Multiple instances of gas tank in my 2006 Jeep Wrangler unlimited overflowing, due to possible check valve malfunction and/or improper design from factory. When filling ones gas tank, you would expect the pump to stop once the tank has reached its capacity. However due to a faulty in-tank check valve, the pump never gets the pressure change as a signal to stop the flow. Hence, every time I fill up I end up spilling a not-insignificant amount of fuel on the ground. This issue is absolutely not operator error, it is a known defect by Jeep/Chrysler.
Every time I attempt to fill the gas tank on my 2005 Jeep Wrangler x fuel overflows at the point at which it should automatically shut off. On some occassions its a small amount, other times, its sprays out forcefully and gets all over me, my Jeep, the ground, and anything else in the immediate area. It does not matter which gas station I fill up at, it happens everywhere. My only solution is to attempt to calculate how much I can put in manually without totally filling it up. Lots of guesswork involved, sometimes unsuccessfully. I see spraying a flammable liquid around in an unintended manner as a safety hazard. So far, Jeep does not see it the same way. . . .
I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler unlimited, and almost every time I fill up the gas tank it overflows, often spraying a significant amount of fuel before the pump shuts off. This did not happen when it was new, but has been happening off and on, getting progressively worse, for the past 3 years. I believe this presents both a fire hazard and an environmental hazard, and I know that many other Wrangler owners have observed the same problem.
When refueling, a significant amount of gasoline spilled out after the pump automatically shut off. Within a second or 2 of the pump shutting off gas then flowed out of the tank filler tube. It splashed all over my pants and shoes along with the car itself.
When refueling my 2006 Wrangler Jeep gas surges out of the tank prior to the pump shutting off. I have not measured the amount spilled but it is enough to create approximately a 24-36" diameter wet spot on the ground. This happens every time I fill my vehicle no matter which filling station I use. This seems like a significant safety and environmental hazard considering it splashes on my arm and clothing if I am holding onto the pump handle or standing within arms reach of the nozzle and the spilled fuel is becoming a ground or water contaminate one way or another as it is soaked up or washes away.
When filling gas tank a large backsplash of gas comes out as tank approaches full. I tried adjusting the gas hose nosle both in and out. Splashing occurs in all cases. Gets less the further the nossel is pulled out. Gas could splash on person standing close, mostly runs down side of Jeep and onto and over rear bumper and onto ground. Service station attendants have come out to check for issue due to amount of gas spilled. Car had no issues with this for first 3 years. Problem developed suddenly with no warning. Only fix is to not completely fill tank but you have to guess each time how close to full the tank is. Gas spilled out between 1/10 and 1/2 gal each time -hard to measure.
Gas will spill from the fuel inlet when filling the gas tank, regardless of speed of additional gas or current amount within gas tank. Enough gas is spilled to cause significant damage should it reach an ignition source.
Every time I fill up my 2007 Jeep Wrangler rubicon, gas will overflow when the pumps shuts off. The first few times, the overflow was a nominal spill. After the 4th or 5th time this occurred, the overflow amount is now a large gush of 1/2 to 1 gallon spilling broadly all over the vehicle and in a fairly wide range away from the vehicle. Chrysler claims the problem is not in their design, yet a fuel tank is not available -- is on back order from supplier. Based on a simple review of complaints, it appears this is not a problem unique only to my vehicle. I am concerned about being splashed with gasoline, or having gasoline splash out and ignite at a gas station.
My 2010 Jeep Wrangler unlimited rubicon stock gas tank overfills at the pump! you set the pump handle to stay until it is switched off, and when it switches off a good amount of gas pours out of the cap.
When filling the fuel tank with fuel, the tank does not properly vent causing fuel to spurt out the filler neck as it approaches full. The gas spurts on the vehicle's 1/4 panel, on the person filling the vehicle and on the ground. This has happened now during the last several fill ups. You must also fill slowly or the gas nozzle shuts off as if the tank is full. I have an extensive automotive background and it is obvious that the tank is not properly venting. This occurs in boats when permanent mounted fuel tank vent lines become blocked or collapse over time.
When I refuel the vehicle and the fuel pump kicks off the gas spills back out of the vehicle. Not just a little amount either. It leaves a good size puddle that I have to go in a notify the store. Not to mention that it covers my shoes, hands, and some times clothes. This seems to happen when my fuel tank is very empty. It has happened several times and at several different gas stations.
When filling up my fuel tank on my 2007 Jeep Wrangler at any gas station an alarming amount of gasoline gushes out of the fuel filler neck after the fuel pump has automatically shut off. I do not recalling this happening when the vehicle was new, it's only recently that this has occurred. Probably started around 8 months ago. It does not appear to be gas pump specific, I've tried approximately 20 different gas stations over the amount of time that this has been occurring. Fuel spills out onto the vehicle, the ground and also myself. Sometimes to the point that I've had to change clothes due to fuel splashing onto my garments.
2008 Jeep Wrangler unlimited having fuel spew from filler pipe when filling tank. This occurs just as tank is full and fuel pump automatically stops. The amount of fuel spilled is about 500 cc and comes out as a bubbly mixture. The fuel spills on the vehicle and on to the ground. It will get on the person filling if standing close. The problems started at about 37k miles and is now occurring with nearly every fill-up. There is no warning that this is going to happen that would allow one to stop the pump before the overflow occurs.
I own a 2008 Jeep Wrangler where fuel spills out of the filler port during the refueling process. This condition occurs when the fuel tank is filled to the full or nearly full level and the gas pump automatically shuts or clicks off. This occurs every time I fill up with gas, and every time it happens, a significant amount of gasoline is splashed all over the driver side rear corner of the vehicle, the ground, and sometimes the person filling the tank. It first happened roughly 600 miles after the bumper to bumper warranty expired, so the dealership currently will not cover the repair.
Fuel tank overflows a large amount of gas whenever I fill the tank. I estimate approximately 6 -10 ounces is spilled down the body and onto the ground every time I attempt to fill it up. Will overflow even when I fill it slowly. Started happening at approx 37,000 miles. Happens at all gas stations.
The contact owns a 2001 Jeep Wrangler. The contact was driving 5 mph when the bolts that held the fuel tank became loose and fractured from the vehicle. The fuel tank was hanging two inches from the ground. The dealer was not informed of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 54,000 and the current mileage was 54,004.

Vehicle spills fairly large amount of gas when filing gas tank constantly. Gas spills on vehicle, ground and person which could be a fire and environmental hazard. Took it to the dealer and they claimed to have changed the filler neck but the problem continues.
I have a 2008 Jeep Wrangler unlimited that overflows while filling up the gas tank. The dealership changed out the filler neck and the problem when away for a few months but it is back. Everytime (without fail) the tank is filled up a considerable amount of gas pours back out.
During the first week of September 2010, when refueling my 2008 Jeep Wrangler unlimited, when the gas station fuel pump /nozzle automatically shuts off, fuel began to overflow / backflow and spill out onto the side of the Jeep and the ground. This continued to happen almost everytime I refueled. I began stopping the fuel nozzle manually when it sounded like the fuel was getting close to the nozzle. It would still overflow on occasion. Now I have to refill the Jeep's gas tank judging by how low the gas gauge reads and how many gallons I put in. Usually I fill the gas tank a to little over three quarters of a tank. I do not feel comfortable filling up the gas tank until it is full or filling it until the pump automatically shuts off when it sense the tank is full because the amount of overflow varied, but in worst cases I estimated it was anywhere from 10 fluid ounces to 32 fluid ounces which really concerns me. There were times when the gas literally gushed out enough to splash onto the thigh area of my pant leg and shoes, while I was standing a good 18 inches from the Jeep.
Just purchased a used 06 Jeep Wrangler in perfect condition with 16000+ miles, took it to fill it up and gas ran out on my first fill up. Now I have to estimate how much gas I need and when I get the that amount, I slowly fill the tank to full. (8/100.
I have a 2008 Jeep Wrangler. Each time I refuel the gas tank it spews gasoline on me as well as the vehicle and the ground. This is a fairly large amount and must be a fire safety as well as a health hazard from direct skin contact. I purchased this vehicle from the dealership used and under warranty approximately 8 months ago. This problem started about 2 1/2 months ago after warranty expired. I am taking vehicle back to dealership along with a printout of the complaints already voiced of the same nature since this appears to be a ongoing problem with these vehicles.
Every time the vehicle is filled with gasoline, gasoline exits the tank through the filler tube and splashes on the ground leaving a potential for fire. This happens at pumps at different stations in different states, different amounts of fuel within before fueling, and regardless of placement of the filling handle of the pump. The vehicle worked as it should for the first 25k miles and will not fill correctly since that time without leaving fuel on the ground. This is my second 2007 Jeep Wrangler and both have had this problem at approximately the same mileage. Each vehicle was filled with the correct gasoline as prescribed by the manual and all maintenance was done at a 5 star Jeep dealer on both. There appears to be a defect in the design of the gas system.
When fueling my Jeep Wrangler, fuel overflows before the pump shuts off. If I don't turn the pump off before the tank is full, a considerable amount of fuel spills out down the side of the Jeep and onto the ground.
Gas tank overfills almost every time, spills large amounts of gas. Problem is common to my vehicle and is not a result of user error.
When re-fueling tank, a large amount of fuel overflows from filler neck as tank is nearing full. This problem occurs every time fuel pump is not manually stopped prior to tank reaching capacity. No fires or injuries have occured, and nothing to date has been done to correct the problem.
