Jeep Wrangler owners have reported 77 problems related to tank mounting (under the gasoline fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Jeep Wrangler based on all problems reported for the Wrangler.
When filling up the gas tank the fuel will spit back out of the tank. This creates a significant amount of fuel being shot back at the person filling up the vehicle and it also creates an environmental hazard. This has occurred on the last few occasions when re-fueling the vehicle.

When filling up my 2008 Wrangler rubicon unlimited with fuel, it does not allow any pump to automatically shut off on time therefore it causes a good amount of fuel to spill out every time. No matter how fast or slow you are pumping. This could make for a dangerous situation as well as have a bunch of fuel spills which cant be good in the eyes of the epa. Seems to be a very common problem with several late model Wranglers as evident by personal experience and many, many post on Jeep Wrangler forums. Took it to the dealership, and of course they couldn't replicate the problem so they couldn't fix it. From what I've read on forums it seems that the only fix is to change out the fuel tank, which apparently has a faulty valve inside. This issue has been going on for quite some time. I bought the vehicle new and it currently only has 13,400 miles. Some people have reported them doing this in the very first fill on their new vehicles.

Every time I fill up the tank of my 2007 Jeep Wrangler a substantial amount of gasoline is spewed from the filler hole. From what I've researched Chrysler's fix is to replace the gas tank; however, the problem eventually starts again.

Every time I refuel my 2005 Jeep Wrangler a large amount of fuel spits out of the fuel filler onto the ground. It appears to be a problem with the design of the check valve built into the fuel tank. This manufacturing defect is a major fire hazard as well as an environmental hazard.

My 2005 Jeep Wrangler rubicon overflows fuel every time I fill up the gas tank. For some reason the gas pump will never stop filling the tank automatically until a large amount of fuel comes spilling out of the fill tube. I have read many complaints about this issue on Jeep forums online, and feel that Chrysler should be recalling affected models to fix this issue.
When filling up the gas tank, no matter how slow I do it, there is an overflow and in a couple cases a forcible splash. It was so forcible this weekend that my pants and shoes were soaked. I have read on a Jeep forum that this is happening to a number of owners of the Jeep Wranglers. There are even a number of youtube videos documenting the situation. At the very least this is an environmental issue but it could escalate into something far more dangerous because of the amount of gas that overflows.
1. When filling gas tank at station, fuel sprays and spills out of filler neck when tank is full. 2. This happens every time I fill up and can result in quite a large amount of gas being spilled sometimes. It began happening about 9 months ago. 3. Nothing, Jeep says it is not a safety issue and the vehicle is out of warranty.

My 2005 Jeep Wrangler unlimited (24,000 miles) started spitting a small amount of gasoline from the filler tube about a year ago. It would spit out about a second after the nozzle shut off. Like many others that are experiencing this problem, I blamed the station’s equipment. I tried other stations & other techniques like filling slower & trying to anticipate when the tank would be full & filling as slowly as the nozzle would allow. Nothing seemed to prevent the spit back. I recently became aware of the workings of the vapor control properties of my Jeep. That led me to an internet forum & to the fact others are having the same problem. I also saw that the NHTSA has investigated this problem on 2007 & 2008 Wranglers & that has led to Chrysler voluntarily extending the warranty on those gas tanks. However, in their final report the NHTSA (pe10-032) seemed critical of the number of complaints because of internet exposure. If this exposure leads to identifying more people with legitimate complaints, how is this a bad thing? these assertions may be easily verified by a trip to a filling station. Part of chrysler’s response was based on warranty claims, it is logical that the older & out of warranty vehicles would not be considered in their evaluation. I believe that extending the warranty rather than a recall is a good way of handling this (replacing only the tanks with problems) & I applaud Chrysler for this. I hope you will encourage Chrysler to add the 2004-2006 Wranglers to the extended gas tank warranty program as we are experiencing the exact same issue as the ‘07 & ‘08s are. The fair alternative would be a safety recall. The identified failure seems to be a check valve in the gas tank.
When filling the gas tank the tank overflows and spills out gas onto vehicle at end of cycle. The amount of gas appears to be 1 - 2 cups. This has been happening for over 6 months. Jeep dealer has had a new gas tank on order for 4 months.
2007 Jeep Wrangler jk (2 door) spits back fuel and spills about a cup of fuel when gas station pump shuts off. This happens at the end of filling the tank regardless of the pace the fuel is pumped (amount spilled is less at lower pump rate but still happens). This began happening about 2 months ago when vehicle had about 27,000 miles. It never happened before that. This is a potentially dangerous issues since it now happens every time the vehicle is fueled.
2007 Jeep Wrangler gas overflow when filling the gas tank. Quite a substantial amount of gas overflows when the gas tank is filled. Even when I try to slowly fill the tank it still overflows. This is a serious safety issue and is common among the jk model Jeep.
Almost every time I fill my Jeep with gas it overflows. A good amount of gas spills out of the gas tank before the pump shuts off.
My 2005 Jeep Wrangler sport spits out a significant amount of gasoline when the tank is being filled up. The amount of fuel is enough to worry me and create a possible fire danger.
Fuel tank overflow problem. Every time I fill up a significant amount of fuel spills from the tank.
2007 Jeep Wrangler jk sahara - every time I fill up with gas, the pump will not automatically shut off until the gas overflows. I have spoken with quite a few other Jeep owners and they are all experiencing the same issues. This is very dangerous due to the amount of gasoline that is spilled onto the ground and could lead to a fire. The dealer indicates the only way to repair this issue is to replace the entire gas tank at my expense. I do not agree with this fact due to the fact that it is a safety concern and affects other owners more often than not.
Gas spills, splatters, shoots violently when tank is full. It occurs every time I fill up at any gas station. Occurs whether I hand control fillup or whether I rely on auto shut off. Hand fillup does seem to reduce the amount of excess gasoline spewing from tank. Gas ends up on my paint, plastic, the fueling station ground, and often my clothing and/or shoes. Very frustrating, concern for fuel sparks.
06 Jeep Wrangler rubicon tank overflow/splash back when refueling. At every fill up regardless of pump handle style, angle or depth of pump nozzle or station location, a large amount of fuel splashes back at the point when it should cut off. It douses me and my vehicle and the ground with gasoline. Problem began appx 2 years ago at roughly 40k miles and has been continuous to date. No action has been taken to resolve this problem because no specific solution has been found.
When filling the gas tank a significant amount of gas spills out simultaneous with the first shut-off of the gasoline pump. Multiple different pumps at multiple different gas stations of multiple different brands do it consistently -- I can no longer rember the last time this did not happen. Manually slowing the delivery rate down to 1% of the normal delivery rate as the tank approaches full can reduce, but only sometimes eliminate the condition. I believe this is an environmental hazard due to the spilled gas. I believe this is a fire risk, as well as a risk to personal property from the splashing gas. I'm told that this is due to a bad valve in the fuel tank that was designed to stop this condition, but that valve sticks. My vehicle has never had any gas over 10% ethanol (unless some gas stations. . Well, you know), and certainly not often (unless, of course, gas stations lie a lot).
Fuel spits out of filler neck when pump shuts off at full tank spilling a considerable amount of fuel.
I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler rocky mountain edition. Every fill up results in an overflow of gas because the nozzle does not automatically shut off until the tank overflows. This has been going on for a few months and was never a problem before.
In the past month the vehicle has begun to "spit up" gasoline when filling up at the service station. Whenever I fill the tank to full and the fill nozzle automatically cuts off, a good amount of gasoline comes up through the filler neck spilling out onto the ground. Various Jeep owners have encountered the same issue and have posted it on the net those that have sought to have the problem remedied have usually had a new tank installed and/or some sort of emissions valve replaced. My vehicle is out of warranty and my dealer will not even look at it without me paying a 'diagnosis' fee. Furthermore I cannot afford to pay for a new gasoline tank on a vehicle that's only 3 years old and has 27,300 miles! I have resorted to only filling my tank 3/4 of the way. I feel this presents various safety issues since there is a significant amount of gasoline spillage presenting a dangerous situation at the pump.
When filling the fuel tank on my 06 rubicon unlimited Wrangler. Before the pump automatically stops pumping the gas will spill out from the filler tube. The amount of fuel spillage can be up to about a quart. This happens every time I try to fill the gas tank. According to the dealer the only fix is to replace the entire fuel tank. This repair would no be covered under warranty. I believe having fuel rush out of the filling nozzle while pumping gas is a very dangerous problem.
2005 Jeep Wrangler when filling the fuel tank it always overflows when full. It does not shut off and spills onto the ground. This did not originally do this but has happened over time on it's own. Not only is this inconvenient but it is also dangerous. After talking with other Wrangler owners an amazing amount of them also experience this problem.
After the fuel pump at a gasoline station shuts off indicating my gas tank is full, gasoline spews back out of the tank through the opening where the gas pump nozzle is inserted once the nozzle is pulled out after fueling. The amount of fuel spilled is significant. I believe it could cause damage to my paint and plastic pieces on my vehicle and is also a fire and environmental hazard. This is not a result of continuing to pump fuel while removing the nozzle. The flow of fuel through the nozzle has stopped but pressure from inside the tank forces fuel out when the gas nozzle is removed. This has occurred on multiple occasions at multiple gas stations and did not occur earlier in the vehicle's history and does not occur when I am fueling other vehicles.
When filling the fuel tank on my 2005 Jeep Wrangler, the tank 'spits' the fuel out of the filler neck as it nears the top. The problem started just recently. But the amount of fuel spilled is getting larger with each fill up.
When filling the vehicle's gas tank the gas overflows out of the gas tank before the gasoline pump shots off. This has happened at many different gas stations. The amount of gas coming out is significant.
I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler unlimited 2 door that every time I fill the gas tank up at the pump it releases a substanitial amount of gasoline through the inlet as it is turning the pump off. This occurs every time I fill my tank and is very dangerous seeing as I get fuel on my skin and then have to get in the vehicle w/ my 4year old daughter. I am not sure what to do to correct the failure.
Stopped at gas station to fill up tank. Held down the handle until the tank was full and the pump is supposed to cut off. It worked correctly. However, immediately after it cut off, gas spewed back up out of the gas tank. It was enough to spill out onto the side of the vehicle and the ground below. I would estimate the amount that spilled out was about a 1/4 of a gallon. I bought the vehicle used in July with about 35,000 miles. The first few refills did not do this. It has happened on approx. The last three refills in a row at three different gas stations. Do not have a cause or solution. There are several others with the same vehicle with the same problem starting to occur. . Starting about 12-15 gas fill-ups ago, my 2007 Jeep Wrangler unlimited 4x4 rubicon started to eject fuel out of the gas filler tube about a second after the pump automatically shut off. I have not changed any procedure during fill-ups and have used the same gas pumps and gas stations for the last 2 years -- this started out of the blue. When the gas overflows, it ejects with enough pressure to cover the gas cap hanging below with gas, and saturates the side of the Jeep and bumper, dropping a good amount of gas on the ground (probably about a 2. 5 - 3 foot radius of a puddle). The first time it happened, my hand was covered in gas, and I estimate about a half gallon of gas was ejected. It now happens every time during a fill-up unless I stop the gas pump before the tank is close to full. I have listened attentively during a few fill-ups, and have shut off the pump once I hear a change in sound that the tank is near full -- and this still results in fuel ejecting from the filler tube, but just not as much. I can no longer rely on the pump auto shut off even at low filling speeds, and I can no longer fill the tank to it's previously normally full capacity. I am very concerned about the safety of this, not only to me and my passengers, but the other patrons around me -- not to mention the environmental impact of the gas spills. There are no known fixes, and it appears, according to Jeep forums, that this is becoming a very common problem, with the latest updates that Chrysler completely replacing gas tanks only under warranty, and with no apparent updates to keep it from occurring again in the future. My Jeep has just come out of warranty around the end of September, due to mileage. I now have 40,000 miles on the Jeep, and I estimate this started at about 35,000 miles.
Started having a problem with my 2007 Jeep Wrangler unlimited at around 50k miles. When filling up at a gas station on a trip to the mountains. When the auto shutoff at the pumped clicked off the gas came spewing out of the file hole. I considered it a one time fluke and that possibly the gas pump was defective. As time went on it did not matter what gas station I went to the problem occurred more and more frequently. Now the only way to avoid an overflow is to stop filling at around 15 gallons and slowly top off the tank by carefully listening for the fuel level and easing the fuel into the tank. My concern is the amount of fuel spilling out on the pavement is a safety hazard. One spark could be disastrous for myself of someone who follows me at the pump. I have read where many other Jeep owners with the same year and model are experiencing a similar problem. I feel this issue needs to be addressed with Chrysler corporation before someone gets hurt.
1. Empty gas tank. Then went to fill said empty tank. 2. Jeep overflows every time I fill the tank. Splashes fuel down the side of the Jeep and onto the ground. 3. I have held the nozzle at different angles and different depths in the fuel tank filler neck but all lead to the same results with no varying in fuel overflow amounts. Mentioned to Jeep dealership, no problem must be my fault, discussed with fellow Jeep owners and searched online all to no avail.
After having my Jeep for 3 1/2 years, every time I fill up my gas tank (no matter what gas station) the automatic shut off does not work on the pump and large amounts of gas spill out everywhere. It did not do this for the first 3 1/2 years of owning the vehicle. Numerous other people on the internet are experiencing the same issue and it's believed to be the roll over check valve in the tank being bad. . Read more...
My 2008 Jeep Wrangler x's gas tank overflows upon the last bit of filling the tank. It started at about 20,000 mi. The gas pump shuts off, and then wait a few seconds to hear it coming up the throat of the tank and it spills a good amount of gas everywhere, not just a few drops. There were no particular events leading up to the failure, and it occurs 9/10 times that I get gas. It does not matter which gas station I go to, or what pump is being used. Chrysler told me when I brought the Jeep into the Jeep service department that "they have no solution for the problem".
Every time I fill the tank on my 2008 Jeep Wrangler a significant amount of fuel overlows out of the tank. This is a serious health and safety issue. This problem occurs when I fill the tank myself or when an attendant fills it. I have been told by the attendant at my local station that this is common to this make and model.
During gas fill ups, gasoline will shoot out of the fill nozzle when the tank reaches full. This causes gasoline to spill to the ground. The amount varies from a dribble to about a cup. Slowing the fill rate towards the end of the fill will generally prevent the spillage but is not guaranteed. This is an every fill up occurrence.
