The gas tank overflows and spits back gas everytime I refill the Jeep's fuel tank. When the automatic shutoff on the gas station pump is engaged the gas sprays out of the fuel cap area of the 2005 Jeep Wrangler. This happens every time regardless of the speed I am filling the tank.

All of the sudden my Jeep started taking for ever to fill and shoots gas out all over me and the ground. . . I have to stand a there and barely let the gas trickle into the tank and I cannot even set it on the lowest lever for handle it takes me about 20 min to put 40. 00 dollars worth of gas in it,,,, the dealer said there is no recall for this and was not covered under the emissions warranty. . . They also told me to check fuel filler pipe for obstructions and to pull our my vapor canister and clean it. . . . I did both and it didn't fix a thing. . Im also understanding that there are hundreds of people having this problem. . . . . I worked for Chrysler dealerships for years and really don't understand why they wont take any actions. . . . I bought this Jeep brand new from where I was working at. . . It was my dream vehicle. . . Now im not so sure. . .

While fueling, the gas tank and vent pipe cause back pressure resulting in fuel spray and overflow. The overflow can cover the person filling in fuel and spill up to a gallon of gasoline on the vehicle and ground.
Fuel tank was just below 1/2 full prior to filling the tank. The tank overflowed out the filler pipe and down the side of the Jeep and onto the bumper after the automatic shutoff had stopped the flow of fuel. This is now happening during every fillup. I do not add fuel after the auto shutoff stops fuel flow. Updated 1/25/11 updated 03/14/11.
The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Wrangler. When attempting to add fuel to the vehicle, the contact noticed that it would spill out onto his clothing similar to NHTSA campaign id number: 05v034000 (fuel system, gasoline:storage:tank assembly:filler pipe and cap). The dealer advised the contact to replace the fuel tank. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was approximately 24,000 and the failure mileage was 22,500.
While filling gas tank at a major gas station the nozzle shutoff clicked indicating that the tank was full. Gasoline was burped out of the fill pipe and ran down the side of the Jeep and onto the bumper. This is the second instance of this happening both were during colder temperatures.
2007 Jeep Wrangler 2-door 1) nearly every time I fill up my gas tank, which holds 15 - 16 gallons per my estimate and fill-up history, it overflows (I have had the car for 13 months, fill up twice a week; 56 weeks x 2 = 112 * 0. 90 = 100 times this has happened). The overflow is not because the tank is over-filled, as it is possible, in my experience, to add an additional gallon after initial overflow. 2) the mechanism that shuts off the pump handle automatically when the fuel tank is becoming full does not stop the pump. This results in excess fuel ending up all over the side of my car, the attached gas cap, and one's shoes and person if one is not expecting the fuel to spit back out. 3) nothing has been done as of yet to correct the failure.
Each time I put fuel in my 2005 Jeep Wrangler unlimited fuel splashes out covering the filler cap, the side of the vehicle, and whatever is nearby. I do not "top off" the tank. It does it on the first shutoff click of the nozzle.
When I fill up my 2007 Jeep Wrangler unlimited sahara, using the pump lock feature on the gas pump, fuel splashes out of the gas cap tube when the tank gets full. Fuel splashes down the side of the vehicle and onto the ground. One time, my son was standing at the rear corner of the vehicle, and gas nearly splashed all over him. Definitely a concern.
I have a 2008 Jeep Wrangler unlimited sahara. In the past 30 days it has started to flow fuel out of the filler each and every time I fill the gas tank, regardless of the station or pump. It literally gushes out as the fuel pump stops. This is an incredible safety hazard. I'm told by the dealer that there is a flaw with the overflow vent filter and as this component is integral to the tank, that the entire tank must be replaced. With all the exact issues on the NHTSA website, it's unbelievable that there has not been a recall. I'm also now concerned about the so-called "death wobble" issue that I've now read about on the site.

The vehicle gas filler tube over flows nearly every fill up. Gas spills out onto the Jeep and onto the ground.
Jeep Wrangler was 3 days old with 713 miles on it. On July 24th after driving 130 miles from foxboro to rochester nh, about 4:15 pm, I pulled into a shell station to fuel the vehicle up. My 3 year old and 6 year old were in the back seat. As I was filling the vehicle someone ran over and pointed to the underside where a large volume of fluid was spilling. It was gasoline coming from the fuel tank. It was pouring onto the very hot exhaust pipe and vaporizing. I notified Chrysler Monday morning of the severity of the safety failure and received complaint number 19760031. I contacted the service center at the dealer requesting that the failed tank be evaluated and not tampered with. He indicated that it was clear there was a manufacturing defect in a bond joint in the fuel tank.

My fuel tank overflows every time I fill up, spilling gasoline all over my Jeep, gas cap, and ground. Can be very dangerous, especially if standing by gas tank while filling up. What if a small kid walks up to my car when it spills out? I see 86+ complaints on this site for this exact problem and nothing has been done! it's been happening to me for well over 3 years.
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that whenever gasoline was added to the fuel tank at least six ounces of it would leak out of the tank. The failure was not diagnosed by the dealer. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 33,000. Updated 12/08/10. The consumer stated the problem was looked at twice, with no resolution/repair. The consumer has since traded the vehicle. Updated 12/14/10.
2005 Jeep Wrangler near the end of filling up gas tank about every other time the pump clicks off and the fuel flows out of filler neck and all over Jeep and ground. This happens at any gas station and is hurting pant under gas cap.
Since ive bought my Wrangler in December 2009 the gas tank will overflow and spill out enough gas to cover the vehicle on the side below the gas cap and spill a puddle on to the ground. Ive read numerous complaints about this issue and there is no recall currently out there for it. I feel this is a hazard because it means something is being left open inside the tank to allow the gas to overflow outof the fill tube. On top of this every time I fill the vehicle up im spilling gas onto the ground which is both an environmental concern and a safety issue.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while adding fuel to the vehicle, he noticed that the filler neck would "spit" gasoline out when the vehicle was almost full. He noticed the problem every time he added fuel to the tank. He called the dealership and was told about technical service bulletins but that they were for vehicles under warranty. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired at the time of the complaint. The contact had not called the manufacturer to-date. The current mileage was approximately 39,000. The failure mileage was approximately 34,000.
Normal vehicle use. No visible failure, however the fuel tank has an internal failure/defect that does not allow the air to vent during filling of the fuel tank. This causes the fuel to shoot out of the filler cap during normal filling, spilling approximately 1 quart of gasoline on the bumper and ground. It occurs during every fill up at any gas station. I took it to the dealer and they did nothing and informed me if I wanted it to work properly I would have to purchase an entire new gas tank. Vehicle is just 2 years old and less than 60,000 miles. I expressed safety concerns and the dealership did not care.
When filling gas tank, fuel splashes back out of fill pipe. It doesn't matter how fast or slow the tank is filled, or what position the fill nozzle is placed in the fill opening, it splashes back out of the fill pipe, covering the side of the vehicle, as well as the person filling if standing too close. I see this as a very dangerous situation, as static electricity could easily ignite the fuel in this scenario. I've read on Jeep blogs that the cure is to replace the fuel tank due to a defective valve in the tank at the cost of over $900. But unfortunately the replacement tank is just another defective tank, as there is not an updated unit available, thus setting up another future failure. There is not recall on this, I think there should be. Please keep me advised of any actions taken in this matter. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2007 Jeep Wrangler. While adding fuel to the tank and it reached the capacity, the fuel began to spill out of the tank splashing onto the contact the ground. The contact has called the manufacturer regarding the gas tank and the manufacturer stated they weren't aware of any related failures. The contact has made an appointment to have a diagnostic test done on the vehicle. The contact is concerned that the failure could cause a fire to occur. The failure mileage was 46,804.
When fueling the gas tank, the auto-shutoff valve at any service station will not shut off in time to prevent fuel splash out of the filler pipe and get on the person doing the fueling and pours down on the ground. This is not isolated to just a few service stations - it happens each and every time you fill this vehicle with gas.
The contact owns a 2005 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that the locking mechanism on the gas cap failed and she was unable to put fuel into her vehicle. The dealer replaced the gas cap, but the failure recurred a year later. As of December 28, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle. The failure mileage was 5,000 and current mileage was 16,000. Updated 05/19/08 updated 05/19/08.
Upon filling gas tank a gush of gas comes from top center of tank, causing gas to run over the side of vehicle and the ground. Took vehicle to dealer. Issue was not resolved. Please provide any further information.
