The manual transmission will make a loud noise and pop out of gear. Shifting is very bad too. The sound is so loud it causes my anxiety to become unbearable. I am a service connected disabled veteran. The sound is like a bomb is going off near the vehicle. Its very upsetting and causes issues when I am trying to drive. It is a safety hazard and awful.

Twice in last 2yrs my standard Wrangler has refused to shift into geer and made a winding noise. . Then stalled and refused to start for upto 10 min. It happend last fal with approx 2900 miles on it then again a few days ago with 4800 miles. . . Not sure why or what is cause nothing is wrong according to dealership garage. Also hitting any little bump for the last 30000 miles has made Jeep jump like the rearend is flopping to one side also hard breaking causes same issue. . All suspension parts are either new or newer. . Looks like someone tried to fix that issue and failed. . . I am afraid these issues will eventually cause an accident.
Was traveling down dirt road at at 20 to 25 mph, then heard different noise like metal scraping. Shifting seemed a little harder but was still working. After returning home I looked under the Jeep and found the transmission skid plate had rusted away from the frame and only 3 bolts on the drivers side holding the transmission in place. If traveling at highway speeds and if both sides broke loose this would have been a different story. I've done some checking after this happens and learned this is a common issue as well as rusting out in other places with Jeeps and think the manufacturer has and least some liability with this ongoing issue.

The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. While driving at a very low speed, there was an abnormal noise coming from the gear shifter as it independently shifted out of the first gear. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission assembly and multiple parts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to part unavailability. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 15,000.

I just drove my vehicle and then parked it at my home on a driveway that has a slight incline. I parked vehicle in 1st gear (6 speed manual transmission), and applied the parking brake. Approximately 10 minutes later I was in my yard and heard a muffled pop noise and then a clicking sound that resembled a roller coaster ride when the cars are being pulled up a steep hill. I turned around and saw my vehicle going down the driveway. It collided with my wife's vehicle then hit a tree. The vehicle has 2800 miles on it. When I got in vehicle the shift was in 1st gear, and brake applied. I started the vehicle and let off the clutch and the vehicle moved forward, indicating that it was in fact in first gear still. I duplicated where I parked it again and it moved backwards again. After multiple reenactments the vehicle would move until 3-5 min later it would make a sudden movement in reverse for about 6-12 inches.

While backing out of a parking space, I was moving the shifter to reverse and heard a clunk sound. It was not a smooth shift. Immediately the check engine light came on. I backed the vehicle out of space and move the automatic shifter to drive and heard another clunking noise. The check engine light stayed on. As I tried to pick up speed the transmission would not shift and the rpm's went higher and higher. We drove the car up to 40 mph and the transmission would not shift. So we decided to take the car home and not operate the vehicle as the transmission was not shifting properly or not at all.

The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Wrangler. The contact was driving 70 mph when the vehicle stalled and could not be restarted. The contact heard a humming noise coming from the gear shift area. After some time, the wipers and the vehicle independently started. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis but the failure could not be replicated. The failure and the current mileages were 90,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while stopped and changing gears from neutral to drive, the vehicle made a loud noise and jolted as the contact attempted to accelerate. The failure recurred several times. In addition, the contact stated that the gear shifter was loose and able to be moved easily while the vehicle was in motion. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a mechanic or the dealer for inspection or repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however, no assistance was provided. The current mileage was 58,199 and the approximate failure mileage was 57,000.
2008 Jeep Wrangler unlimited the shifter pops out of first gear violently, with a very loud noise. This has occurred over 20 times. Especially dangerous when pulling out to oncoming traffic and it pops out of gear.
March 2009: while driving at 55mph, hear a rattle noise, then the shift on the floor shakes violently. Pull over, cannot find anything wrong, travel home less than 50 mph, fine. Few more times, on the highway, car does it again. Put in fuel injector cleaner, change oil, clean all around battery. Does not do it for a week or two then does it again. Told to replace camshaft sensor & crankshaft sensor. Did and ran fine no issues for two weeks. 4/13/09 after sitting at a red traffic light, proceeded to turn right, engine died. No warning no sound,no dash lights on, waited a few minutes, started up & traveled home. 4/15/09 after sitting at a traffic light while driving forward, car died, no sound, chugging, no dash lights we went to Jeep in fort myers florida. They said we need to change our oil, add a fuel additive, injector cleaner & clean our battery in addition to replace one of the sensors. All of this was already done. If that does not solve the issue, then it is our ignition switch. Cost to us for this diagnosis $110. 19. 4/27/09 towed Jeep with RV to mainewent to Jeep dealer macdonald motors bridgton maine. 5/04/09 car died while driving to the appointment, this time 45-50mph. Wanted to replace crank sensor with a ?mopar? brand, even though we told him it was just done. Also wanted to complete combustion chamber cleaner from bulletin 09-003-03. Declined. Cost $55. 81
5/18/09 took car into macdonalds motors for bulletin 09-003-03 to be done & asked them to check grounding mounts. Rec'd call that they performed fuel system cleaning & need a new crank sensor. We spoke to the manager, because the work we requested was not performed, and other items were. He assured us the bulletin would be performed the inspection was performed, no repair was needed and the grounding mounts were fine and the computer no longer tells them it needs a crank sensor. This vehicle has died three more times since their repairs.

Normal driving results in a change in the shifting action of the automatic electronic transmission. If the vehicle is warm the electronic buzz lengthens and prevents the shifting from one gear position to the next. The transmission rumbles and skips before changing to the next gear for a second or more. The gears clearly are not engaging in a timely manner and prevents ready movement after shifting to a new gear position. After long drives this is noticeable during normal unhurried parking maneuvers. This action was initially observed at about 384 miles on odometer and brought to the attention of the dealer. The second problems has occurred on 5 or more occasions where the idle speed does not go to normal after removing pressure from the accelerator. Was first noticed on hills in city of san francisco and has been noticed in traffic on several other occasions. The engine noise is quite audible when this occurs and idles above 1000 and carries vehicle at 10 plus mph on flat surfaces. The vehicle also surges after short drives and is noticeable in parking lots or garage parking. There have been three "dangerous" instances while in traffic. This will occur in both reverse and forward drives. The drive train also has a loud resonating sound which sounds as though the rotating is not uniform at low speeds. The dealer says this is a normal sound. All of these concerns were observed after about 300 miles and brought to the attention of the dealer. The dealer does not acknowledge hearing the gear sounds, said the idle would adjust after 3600 miles and has not addressed the surging.

I believe the Jeep Wrangler built by daimler Chrysler has safety defects that constitute a series of safety hazards. 1. Automatic transmission shifts and engine rpm accelerating on breaking. On several occasions my Jeep engine rpms raced and the vehicle leaped forward while breaking and coming to a stop. Since the problem does not happen with regularity the dealerships can find nothing wrong. 2. Front seat belts. The front seat belts do not retract smoothly, quickly and without getting caught in the door locking mechanism. 3. Full size doors. They do not close and secure fully as the door is ajar until you re-close the door with force. 4. Break noise. I get a consistent clack noise when applying the breaks. I have had the dealership work on this problem on five occasions to include a complete break service. The problem is still there. 4. Build quality. Since I bought the Wrangler I have had the radiator replaced (it leaked), all the spark plugs replaced (rough idle), inside right door handle assist and snap on front floor mat replaced, the computer reprogrammed (they said the factory did not do it right), fuel pump replaced (gas leak), seals around gas tank and gas cap (vapor leak), and the rear seals (which were not covered under my Chrysler extended warranty). 5. Chrysler extended warranty. Neither the dealership nor Chrysler wanted to address the break problem without me paying for a break service.
Transmission failure - grinding noise is heard when shifting into 2nd and 3rd gears, jerks forward before clutch is let out, will not shift into 5th gear at highway speeds. This is the second transmission to fail in this vehicle.

Transmission failure - grinding noise is heard when shifting into second and third gears. Clunk is heard when shifting into first gear from a stop and vehicle jerks forward before clutch is let out.
Transmission is and was still very difficult to shift from second (2nd) gear after being driven for more than 20 minutes. It takes quite a lot of force and therefore creates a safety hazard for me. It also (the new transmission and the old transmission) makes noise (rather loud) when the clutch is not pressed in.

Transmission makes noise when in nuetral and clutch is diengaged/shifting is difficult.
Transmission makes loud noise when in neutral or when clutch is released, also 1st or 2nd gear is hard, sometime impossible to shift which nearly cause accidents. Sometimes impossible to shift).
5 speed manual transmission started (nv3500) is not shifting smoothly into any gear. There is resistance and a grinding sound during shifting into any and all gears. Transmission emits a "clunking" noise when clutch is disengaged between gear shifts. On 11/06/2000, vehicle was taken to dealership responsible for warranty service repairs. Dealer claimed that they road-tested the vehicle and that all shifting functions were "working to factory specs". Dealership refused to perform any further investigation into this complaint and did not offer a remedy or offer to repair. After 2 more weeks of operation, the gear grinding is getting worse and more resistive to shifting from gear to gear.
Transmission is hard to shift 1st to 2nd gear, sometimes it does not engage, also loud noise coming out from the transmission when the clutch is released.
Transmission has been replaced but still makes grinding noise when in neutral. If clutch is depressed noise will go away. Also, stick shift is very difficult to move after highway travel.
Very hard to down shift from 5th after highway driving, loud clutch noise when idling in neutral.
Grinding noise when clutch disengared and while driving. Hard to shift. Gringing noise when vehicle is turned off. Contacted and brought to dealer 4x on 4th x dealer said transmission need to replaced as well as the bearing spring and fork.
At initial delivery of vehicle and driving home heard a low grinding sound. It was very difficult to shift. Contacted dealer, and dealer replaced transmission. New transmission noisy, manufacturer said noise was acceptable.
I bought the Jeep new and have had transmission problems since. Shifting is very tight with a grinding noise. There is a rattling noise when the vehicle is in neutral. I like all the other complaints I have read and really frustrated at the time taken off of work to fix the problem with no answers or cures for the problem after 2 years. I will never buy another Jeep product.
Transmission makes a rattling noise at idle & when engaging clutch in 1st gear. It is very hard to get in and out of gear, somtimes it feels like your shifting with out a clutch. This problem has been since the Jeep was bought new in July 2000. I took it to the dealership once they replaced clutch assembly. 2 days later it was doing the same thing again. Its going back to service April 10th. Ive read that several people have had the same problem with there Jeeps. I think Chrysler needs to solve the problem and correct it. I understand that every new car can have its problems, but Chrysler needs to solve them and fix them!!! I dont want to have to take my "new car" to service every month to get a transmission or clutch put in it. If I was going to do that I would have bought a used one for about half the price!!!.
4-wheel drive inoperable. In addition, driver's seat belt will not retract/gas gauge failed, shows tank 1/4-1/2 full when it is actually out of gas/passenger's side door handle very tight and squeaky/abs brakes squeal loudly/automatic transmission has trouble shifting and sticks prior to releasing to next gear, and seat belt warning system buzzer sounds at times uneven and loud with a squeaking noise.

Since the day I picked up my Jeep from the dealer it has made a loud grinding/growling noise when it is in neutral with the cluch out. It sound like it would be the input shaft bearing to the tranny. At first when the dealer heard it they said it sounds like a bad bearing to them, but when I took it in to have them look at it further they said that the noise was normal. There are other problems with it popping out of gear and hard to shift, which I have not experianced yet but due to the noise I suspect that is not far away.
Nvg 3550 5-speed manual produces loud noise when idling in neutral. Dealer claims this is normal. Transmission difficlut to shift when hot. Dealer claims could not duplicate problem.
When the vehicle is shifted into gear it will not go all the way into gear. Also, there is a clunking noise, the gears mesh together improperly. The dealer has been notified. Owner has notified the manufacturer.
