1 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2022 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 02/11/2025

The contact owns a 2022 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that on three separate occasions while driving at various speeds, the vehicle jerked upon depression of the accelerator pedal with a message to "service transmission continue in d - do not shift or turn engine off" was displayed on the instrument panel. On the first failure, the contact was able to drive the vehicle to galeana Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram (14375 s tamiami trl, fort myers, FL 33912); however, the contact was informed that the dealer would not honor warranty. The vehicle was taken to another dealer and the body control module was replaced. The failure returned months later while the contact was out of town and the vehicle was towed cross country on the contact's trailer back to the dealer. The contact was informed on the visit that the transmission control module was defective and the tcm was replaced; however, the failure returned months later. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it remained. The dealer reached out to the manufacturer while the contact waited for a decision from the manufacturer. The vehicle was not yet repaired and remained with the dealer. The failure mileage was 2,132.

2 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2022 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 12/18/2024

Cranked up Jeep and had no warning lights. Pulled onto highway, electronic stability control alarm sounded. Made it to stop light, stopped, Jeep did not cut off but showed an alarm where it would not move until it was put in park then back in drive. This happened 4 times then stopped. I turned off of the highway onto a different road, got up to speed (approx 60mph) the esc warning came back on and went off. Jeep did not cut off but it jerked a few times then the rpms shot up to around 9 without me pressing the gas. I was able to pull over, cut it off and sit for a min. Then I cranked it back up and it ran fine for about 5 miles then going about 60mph it lunged forward with no speed increase, rpms shot up again and a transmission code came up on the dash screen. I pulled over, my husband came and we put it on a trailer and carried it home. Ran diagnostics and changed both the main and auxiliary battery and it was fine for about a month. I went to run errands about a month later, got in and all the electrical would come on but it would not crank and all the gears on the shifter showed in orange and blinked instead of orange and white like normal. The electrical would not cut off without unhooking both batteries. Tested batteries, auxiliary was completely dead. Replaced it, Jeep still would not crank and the electrical stayed on unless the batteries were disconnected. Trailered it to the dealership, they did multiple tests to find out it was the tcm. First incident occured 12/18/24, second incident occurred 1/17/24.

The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving 55 mph uphill, the vehicle failed to respond upon depressing the accelerator pedal. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle lost power steering functionality. Additionally, the stereo and the windshield wipers engaged independently. A message indicating a shifter column failure was displayed, and other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact was able to exit the highway and pulled into a driveway, where she parked the vehicle. The contact stated that the engine continued running after pressing the start/stop button several times to turn off the vehicle. Additionally, the contact stated that the engine revved up significantly while the accelerator pedal was not depressed. The contact pressed the start/stop button again, and the vehicle turned off. The contact then restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle responded as needed; however, the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that upon using an obd reader, codes indicating lost communication with abs control module, torque request signal from pcm denied, can communication messages missing, invalid data from ecm/pcm, lost communication with scm/canc and implausible missing transmission message, were read. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

On multiple occasions, as my wife and two children 8 and 3 were on their way home from school the steering column locked up and my wife couldn't do anything but coast into a ditch. When the steering wheel locks up, each time it throws messages of loss of communication to the steering wheel, loss communication of the shifter, and loss communication to the brakes. This problem has happened three different times after the dealerships service department has put on multiple parts to try to fix the issue with no resolution. This is a huge safety issue, and we are terrified that this problem will continue to happen. The biggest concern is, what happens if the steering wheel locks up and we cannot avoid a serious accident that could harm our family or other motorists on the road. The manufacturer has recommended we put on abs control module, pcm, and lower gear box. We have reached out to the dealership and to Jeep about this issue with no help given other than to pay out of our own pocket to fix the problem.

Displays, "service shifter". Often followed by many, mostly random warnings, gauges fluctuate wildly, and disabled stop/start, traction and stability control; and sometimes loses power steering, and stalls and won't restart. The stereo volume, wipers, and cabin fan speed also can fluctuate wildly; worst case. This issue first appeared after going through a puddle, and seems to be exacerbated by high emf areas; this is only corollary. This vehicle has never been used roughly or off road. The obvious dangers are, spontaneous maniacal warnings are a significant distraction to driving; if stop/start is not disabled vehicle will not start after stop at intersection, causing disruption to traffic; if power steering randomly stops working, which occurs while stopped or driving, the vehicle is nearly impossible to drive, and can only practically be driven by a strongman athlete. The coup DE grâce where everything goes berserk, is usually when parked and attempting to reset the condition. The problem has not been reproduced by a dealer or service center; I have spent days inspecting grounds, harnesses, and inspecting, cleaning and replacing connectors. There's also a long list of mostly random codes for nearly everything, including the persistent lost communication with tcm. Up to October 2022 and 66,000 miles the only warnings or codes were for, wheel sensor (rep under warrantee), and "small leak in vapor recovery system" (leaky gas cap). A month+ after the warrantee expired, at about 66,000 mi, the vehicle began to generate random warnings and codes, and became unbearable (and dangerous) to drive. My observations and inspections and limited testing (haven't probed system circuits directly) lead to an assertion that the problem is system wide; many wildly various, mostly non repeatable, codes are recorded, systems that shut down are wildly various and not always repeatable; like there's nothing specifically or consistently wrong-but everything is failing. 5v reg in tcm?.

The contact owns a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving at 5 mph all the warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated he shut down the vehicle and restarted, when the vehicle restarted the check engine warning light was still illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis, and they stated that no failure was found, but a software updated was done because 60 plus warning code where storage in the computer, but the failure reoccurred, the vehicle was taken to another dealer again, they stated the same as the first dealer that 60 plus code had storage in the computer and not failure was found. The manufacturer was contacted, and they stated that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed. The failure mileage was 54,000.

My 2018 Wrangler accelerates when not on the gas pedal, and both the engine light and electronic throttle light comes on. My Jeep has been to the dealer 4 times for this issue and it still goes unfixed. It has been to an independent service center once, and they diagnosed the pcm (powertrain control module) as failing. This issue is very dangerous for myself and anyone else on the road as my Jeep will accelerate at random.

The vehicle while operating under normal driving conditions had a check engine light appear. A certified mechanic found the tcm was faulty. Findings: p0218 high temp operation activated. P0714 transmission temp sensor intermittent. P0613 internal tcm problem. Instrument cluster: 1 tcm/single board engine control message not received data list for tcm is reading 1023 degrees fahrenheit or 1. 10 volts having code p0613 tcm is faulty. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.

9 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2014 Jeep Wrangler

Following a mandatory pcm flash recall, I've been having trouble with my '14 Jeep Wrangler's automatic transmission. It will intermittently not upshift under heavy acceleration. Instead, the engine revs to 4k, and it will stay in the gear. Only if I let off the gas and allow it to reset, then gradually accelerate will it work properly. The dealership and Jeep have not been able to figure out the issue, having replaced the entire transmission, pcm, and ecu, as well as numerous other parts and sensors. I fully believe this is computer software related, but the manufacturer is refusing to acknowledge this as a potential issue. For the longest time, I was not able to get a dtc code, but most recently found a stored one that appears to direct the issue to the can-bus communication issue. Attaching screenshot.

10 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler

Vehicle was driven and put into park. When restarted, even though I was able to move the gear shift, the Jeep would not move out of park. One dealership said it coded as the transmission control module and supposedly replaced it along with a transmission flush. Left and drove the Jeep, but it felt like it was always trying to shift into gear. Drove about 130 miles and had to get gas even though I was at 3/4 tank when I picked it up after "repairs". Turned the vehicle off, got gas and restarted it. Again, would not go into gear but I was able to move the gear shifter.

The vehicle keeps losing power at the most inopportune times (passing a vehicle; in a construction zone with no shoulder; on a highway). I have almost gotten into 4 accidents b/c of this problem. Whenever the vehicle goes faster than 70 mph. . . Power is lost. It continually throws off a code of 0369. The dealership has replaced the following to try to fix the problem: replaced abs system; replaced stability control system; replaced oil filter housing; replaced the cam twice; swapped the cam; replaced the cam phaser; replaced all 4 cam phasers; re-flashed the pcm; replaced the pcm. Today it goes in to the dealership for the 10th time to try to get it fixed. It is a death trap to all that share the road with it, not to mention extremely unreliable. It has never been off-roaded and is well maintained.

12 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2012 Jeep Wrangler

I love my Jeep, but for the past year we have had a love hate relationship. Today I received a letter indicating that the power control module might need reprogramming. Interesting enough this went bad on my 2012 Jeep a year ago. Shortly thereafter my engine failed. Now that I see there was an issue with the pcm needing reprogrammed it made sense why a Jeep with barely 90,000 miles would have an engine that failed, especially considering that I was never rough with it, and always gave it appropriate oil changes. It took me the better part of a year to pay off the cost of the new engine, and when you've got a car this new, there really isn't a good option besides knuckling down and paying for the fix. I would love to love my Jeep again. When this happened it was very cold outside, my Jeep sat outside overnight. While driving to school the temp gauge pinged. I limped it back to a dealership (no Jeep dealers in my hometown) and eventually found out the problem. After what I thought was an initial fix, it was determined that the engine had actually failed and I subsequently had it replaced at a Jeep dealership. I can provide proof of the replacement if necessary.

13 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2016 Jeep Wrangler

My vehicle has been in the dealership approx. Four times, because the service engine light comes on, followed by the traction control light. They said that the cable connection gets loose and they soldered it. This started about 20000 miles and is now at 57778 miles. This last time on 4-24-2019 they said that it has stored codes for the cam sensors on both banks and torque request denied signal and torque management signal performance. P2638, c121c, p0344, p0369. They said that it has pcm update and that they performed the pcm update again and cleared codes to see if they would come back. Vehicle driven 30 miles and and one large bump in the road and the lights turned on again. This happens while going down dirt roads. They also told me the first time that it was taken in that the cable is to short and causes stress and stretches, causing it to come loose. This time they said if the lights came back on that they would have to have the vehicle back to do more extensive tests and possible replace the sensors at my expense. This seems to be a reoccurring problem that always comes back. They also stated that this is a problem on all Wranglers. This seems to be a manufactures defect and needs to recalled and fixed.

14 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2006 Jeep Wrangler

I've been battling bad shifting problems and spent thousands of dollars trying to resolve the issue. After replacing the transmission, lots of diagnostic fees, and now a pcm module. I've learned after 8 months, that Chrysler can't seem to solve the pcm problem and left the aftermarket to resolve it. I luckily found a company who can resolve it. Tribal knowledge is that Chrysler couldn't figure it out and some parts are no longer available. This is unacceptable!.

Takata recall, oil pump drive gear, pcm powerterrain control module I believe needs to be reprogrammed I have a failure of power while driving down the road like its getting to much or to little fuel and last week my oil pressure will not budge my gauges are slowly going out on my dash and the airbag light on dash blinks rapidly with the check gauges because of my old pressure I have taken it to multiple places to get it diagnosed and they say it is the oil pump drive gear and the pcm needing to be reprogrammed along with that being out of line my ground connections seem to be bad but I replace all of them from the battery to the engine block the dash and a couple more it has pressure but doesn't sound like it. All of this started happening at about 143,000 miles I have replaced multiple parts including the oil pump oil sensor all of the ground wires and terminals and checked as many relays as I can. Along with my dash when I had got it it had 130,000 miles on and the airbag light has always blinked and noticed a loss in power when I drive since I've had it, it runs through spark plugs and coils packs monthly and has since I've gotten it I drove it to georgia and back and it sounded like it was getting worse and just kept getting worse and worse until last week my oil pressure gauge says I have no pressure and the engine has oil pressure but you can tell it's going more and more out of line. I know when I look up my VIN number it says it's been updated since March 14, 2019 but when I log into another app it says I have recalls I don't know what to do or how to fix it but it definitely is the three recalls that was put on the 2005 Jeep Wrangler tj.

Jeep started stalling either when parked or in traffic. Dealership says its the powertrain control unit (pcm or computer). Twice engine stalled as I was driving. Once as I was making a turn luckily had enough momentum to pull over and another time getting ready to proceed after a red light it stalled all of a sudden and again able to pull over. I have found many Jeep owners with this same problem and I am aware Jeep is aware but nothing has ever been done. Started mothers day 2018 and a few times up till July when I just parked it and had it towed to 3 shops including dealership.

Hard shifting from 1st to 2nd. Stuck in 2nd while in interstate traffic. What a nightmare! it's all over the internet about the bad pcm problem but no help from the dealer due to the age of the vehicle even with only 19000 miles.

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Jeep Wrangler. While driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle automatically went into limp mode and the hot oil and check engine warning indicators illuminated. The contact also mentioned that the rpms failed to increase. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle for the indicators to dim. The vehicle was taken to feeny Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram of midland (7400 eastman Ave, midland, mi 48642) where it was diagnosed that the transmission control module needed to be replaced and there was corrosion in the totally integrated power module. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred a year later. In addition, the vehicle failed to start. The contact mentioned that the starter was replaced and the vehicle was driveable for two days; however, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning indicator illuminated continuously. The vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and they stated that the fuel pump module needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 62,521.

2005-2006 Jeep Wranglers are incurring an apparent large number of pcm/ecu failures (as evidenced in many online forums and a high backlog of pcm orders which Jeep/Chrysler is unable to fill or provide an eta for). The failure of the pcm reveals itself in many ways including emissions system failures (and resultant vehicle inspection failures I will add), transmissions failing to shift, hard forceful transmission shifts with vehicle lunges and more. On my vehicle specifically the O2 sensor codes are coming on and the vehicle will randomly not shift out of second gear which presents itself as a safety hazard when entering high speed freeways and interstates. The O2 sensors were replaced new with oem parts and the codes did not go away. The fault was traced by a reputable mechanic (christian brothers automotive) to the pcm and further online investigation indicates this a frequent and recurring issue. When I attempted to replace the pcm through Jeep/Chrysler I am unable to because the part is backlogged. I have placed a pricey $1600 order for the part but thus far (1 week) I have not been provided with an eta or any answers as to why this design defect has not been addressed. Based on the large number and type of issues reported online with this pcm I am left wondering why it is not a safety, emissions and/or recall issue. My specific pcm pn is r6044529ac but multiple variations of the pn appear to be effected.

I get a code that pops up after being on the highway for a time that says something regarding transmission. Also the transmission is slow to shift between drive and reverse sometimes and grinds (auto trans). There have been multiple reports of pcm issues that require rebuild or replacement but availability is scarce. Could be poor design.

Over a period of several days the vehicle started shifting hard and eventually went into "limp" mode and started throwing different codes for various sensors. After many visits to different mechanics I researched the problem myself and pinpointed the pcm as the problem.

The transmission control module (tcm), part of the computer, fails and manifests as a failure to shift from 1st to 2nd, over revving, loud thuds/clunks when it does shift from 1st to 2nd. Computer (tcm) can be reset if battery (+) disconnected and grounded out. This problem is not rare, estimate several 1,000 Jeep Wranglers '05 and '06 with automatic transmissions are experiencing this now or will. Chrysler has no interest in repairs or providing parts. From Jeep forums, best guess is a resistor or capacitor on the computer motherboard fails or critical electrical connections were poorly/incorrected soldered leading to insufficient and inconsistent connectivity.

2013 Jeep Wrangler. Consumer writes in regards to intermittent engine problems, while driving up hills acceleration speeds decrease. The consumer stated upon driving up hills, the check engine light illuminated. The consumer stated after doing some research online, it appeared that another model was recalled for the same problem. Owners indicated the cam shaft sensors and dynamic sensor control needed a tcm update.

The pcm used with automatic transmissions has a serious and very common failure. Chrysler has known since 2006 and has made no effort to date to rectify the issue. The tcm side (internal with the pcm) has a problem that causes harsh shifting issues. The only known successful repair is to replace the pcm. This has caused them to be unavailable and when they are, they are 3 to 5 times more expensive than other years. Also, these remanufactured pcm's are not reliably repaired, it is usual that several different pcm's be installed before a reliable one is found. I know of a 2006 Jeep tjl that had six mopar remanufactured computers installed in 90 days, all by the same dealership, before one that actually worked was found. There are hundreds of posts on every online forums that Jeepers use that discuss the problem in great detail. 26 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2016 Jeep Wrangler

While driving on city streets the manual transmission's shift lever became loose making it difficult to shift into any gear. The lever would rotate 360 degrees around its center and eventually come completely off of its mount. When rotated, the offset in the shift lever being at a new angle would lead to shifting being obstructed by the driver or passenger's legs and seats. After coming off of its mount while stationary gear selection became impossible without repair. Dealer would eventually complete a repair under warranty. Items noted on the service order: lever: 52060064ag, screw: 6506668aa, pcm update flashed.

27 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2004 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 03/11/2016

At 91,500 miles the pcm failed for a second time. I am not certain when the first failure occurred, but it was shown to have been flashed previously. This issue surfaced in the form of a stall out at a light. When attempting to accelerate from an idle position the engine stalled. After parking the vehicle, turning over the engine while simultaneously giving it gas, the vehicle turned over. According to three different mechanics this is a common issue among '04 Jeep Wranglers that they have encountered recently (12 years after market and 2 years completely out of warranty). No one can find a replacement pcm because they are no longer manufactured, and it was Chrysler's recommendation that customers experiencing this issue go to a scrap yard to find a replacement (likely to have the same issue). As a customer I am appalled that we are aware of this issue and there have been no recalls. Driving down the highway my battery charged to 20 volts and could have exploded.

The pcm/ecu (cars computer or brain), that controls everything in the vehicle, sensors, emissions, fuel etc. Has gone out for the second time causing a crank no start issue. Took vehicle to my local Jeep dealer (hemet, CA. ) for them to charge me $1450. 00!!! for a new pcm! and not a new part, but a rebuilt one! I can find factory replacement pcm's online for $520. 00 new not rebuilt! have read numerous owner CO mplaints about this very same part and wondered, "why no recall or TSB"? thank you for any help.

The contact owns a 2006 Jeep Wrangler. While accelerating from a complete stop, the transmission shifted violently into second gear. The engine began to rev rapidly. The failure occurred only after the vehicle was initially started or whenever the engine was turned off and restarted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the pcm was reprogrammed. Three weeks later, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the pcm was replaced; however, the failure recurred nine months later. The vehicle was not repaired for the most recent failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 73,000.

The cel (check engine light) or mil has been turned three times (dtc code p2099). The dealer has not found the problem, the dealer review the vehicle and all is ok. The dealer changes the pcm (powertrain control module), but the problem continues, the cel (check engine light) light has become a turn.

Vehicle is currently (Dec 2012) at dealer having heads/valves replaced (10th day after waiting 10 days for parts), original report 9 Nov: idling engine continues to be very rough, much rougher than when reported to dealer on November 9 2012, dealer did pcm reflash/update as stalling maneuver, after which problem worsened and mil came on vehicle is vibrating abnormally when stopped and idling, all passengers feel the car shaking, almost stalls at times idling engine changes speeds and sound intermittently and is running very loud engine always had slight ticking on left side since new but was never loud or rough loss of power felt at acceleration at top of gears (manual) white exhaust emissions after cold start, this never happened before engine light mil is on and off repeatedly - reads p0306 cylinder 6 misfire gas mileage severely affected (approx 25% worse), car now has 18k miles; dealer said it was ok to drive it - however driving it may cause other damage this is 3rd visit to dealer - when problem first reported dealer service dept said I might have put water in the gas. I have had to push the dealer to fix this and the general attitude has been adversarial and not helpful.

The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Wrangler. While driving approximately 15 mph, the contact heard a loud rattling noise underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the catalytic converter was replaced. Recently, the contact discovered a voluntary recall issued by the manufacturer pertaining to the power train control module. The contact was displeased to know the VIN was not included in the recall and ineligible for reimbursement for the prior repair. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000. The consumer stated the exhaust manifold cracked on two separate occasions and had to be replaced.

33 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2010 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 02/11/2011

The contact owns a 2010 Jeep Wrangler sport. While driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle started to shake excessively and lose power abnormally with the illumination of every warning light on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they performed a diagnostic test concluding that the pcm had failed. The vehicle was repaired. On a later date while attempting to accelerate 15 mph, the contact smelled an unusual burning or smoke odor as the vehicle stalled without warning. The dealer informed the contact that the pcm failed a second time and blown a fuse. The manufacturer offered to repair the vehicle however, because the contact had only owned the vehicle for two days he wanted a replacement but the manufacturer refused. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was 184 and the failure mileage was 172.

34 Automatic Transmission Control Module problem of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler

Failure Date: 04/30/2010

Vehicle loses power to accelerator at random, unpredictable times (could be at a stop sign, could be while traveling on a highway, and does not matter if car is hot or cold). Warning light (lightning bolt) flashes on the dashboard, and accelerator is sluggish to respond or unresponsive altogether. I have nearly been in two accidents while pulling into traffic because cars starts to go, but then loses power and the accelerator takes about 3-4 seconds to recognize I am stepping on it. I have had it into Chrysler dealership three times now, and they are unable to diagnose the issue. First time the accelerator pedal assembly was replaced. The second time, the pcm module (drivetrain computer/module) was replaced in its entirety. Problem started occurring around 30,000 miles, and has continued since (now at 41,500). Has nearly caused me to be in two bad accidents, which caused other cars to swerve/skid around me because I was stopped broadside in roadway. They would not acknowledge problem until they made me drive them around our city, and prove to them what happens. Luckily it happened while he was in the car with me, but the service techs are unable to diagnose the problem and continue to work with Chrysler engineers to no avail. Other instances include being stopped at a red light on a hill, and not being able to go forward in time, and nearly drifting backwards into vehicles behind me. This requires use of heavy foot on gas and emergency brake. Additionally, vehicle is a 6 speed manual, and sometimes 'pops' out of first gear while starting from a stop position. This issue has happened for the last 5,000 miles approximately but is becoming more common (nearly daily). I believe they will be able to diagnose this issue and correct it (common problem according to my internet research), however it does not appear they have a handle on the first issue. I have been told to leave my vehicle at the dealership until they can diagnose and fix the problem, it's not safe.
