1 Cruise Control problem of the 2021 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 04/22/2021

Date of incident: 22 Apr 2021, Thursday description of incident: while driving on cruise control at 45 mph on a well-paved two-lane road with no other vehicles or obstacles present in either lane, the vehicle suddenly automatically decelerated sharply, causing the front end to plunge. Simultaneously, several alerts, both in words and symbols flashed on the dash. These included check collision alert and lights showing a skidding vehicle and a second showing the front of a vehicle in a crash. Alternating my attention between the alerts/messages on the dash and driving the vehicle, I steered to the side of the road and stopped. The engine was turned off and then restarted. All alerts and symbols were extinguished. An inspection of the front of the vehicle showed nothing covering or obstructing any portion of the vehicle. I accelerated back onto the road and returned to a speed of 45 mph without using cruise control. The vehicle returned to normal driving with no alerts or warning symbols. After driving approximately another 20 miles, with two periods of parking the vehicle, the cruise control was again engaged at 45 mph on an otherwise empty road. While I attempted to exit the following-distance control feature, the vehicle again braked suddenly with the same set of alerts and symbols as during the first incident. Again steering to the road shoulder, the engine was stopped and restarted with all alerts/symbols extinguished except the check engine light.

2 Cruise Control problem of the 2017 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 12/30/2019

While using the variable cruise control I was following a car which was traveling 40mph. I had my variable cruise control setting at 75mph and the maximum distance setting. Therefore I was traveling at 40mph. A motorcycle passed me on my right going 50mph+. As my car recognized the motorcycle in front of me it slowed initially, and then accelerated to follow the motorcycle. The acceleration continued after the motorcycle had passed the car in front of me. It seems that the variable cruise control remained focused on the motorcycle although there was now a car between me and the motorcycle. The acceleration continued and the distance between me and the car in front of me decreased until I interrupted the cruise control and slammed on the brakes. This scenario has occurred several times. This all occurred on a highway in the carpool lane while going straight.

3 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 10/01/2019

On my cruise control when I set to certain speed, it will speed up, I had it set to 65 mph and it sped up by itself to 85 before I could get it to go off. I had to slam on the break to get it to go off. This has happened several times. Now the car will not start all the lights will come on, but car will not do anything. Checked fuses all good, ground wire was taken loose and paint grinder off and put back on, still won't start. It started not starting every now and then and now it won't start at all. I read where this is happening to several kia specifically 2006 .

4 Cruise Control problem of the 2010 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 04/12/2017

The contact owned a 2010 kia Sedona. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning while the cruise control was engaged. The brake pedal was depressed, but failed to stop the vehicle. In addition, the emergency brakes failed. The contact was able to stop the vehicle by turning the ignition off and removing the key. Upon exiting the vehicle, a bystander was running towards the vehicle with a fire extinguisher. The contact noticed flames under the front end of the vehicle. The fire was finally extinguished by the fire department. There were no injuries. A fire and a police report were filed. The vehicle was towed and deemed a total loss. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 106,000.

7 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 06/22/2013

The first time this incident happened, I was driving my 2008 kia Sedona van on a level street at approximately 30mph. The van started accelerating at a fast speed and the brakes would not work. Fortunately, there were no cars coming the other way and no people out walking. I was not able to stop at the stop sign and I put on my emergency brake and turned off the van. The second incident occured while I was driving up a hill. The van started accelerating and I was not able to use my brakes. This time I put the van in neutral and was able to regain control of the van. I took the van to my mechanic and they did not find any problem with the brakes or anything else. My friend also experienced a similar incident with her newer model kia Sedona and uses my same mechanic and found nothing wrong. Her incident happened before my first episode in June. Today, I was driving my daughter to work and the same thing happened as I was driving up a slight elevated street. I was not able to use the brakes and shifted into neutral. I was able to slow the engine and get her to work. I have five children and I have had at least one of them with me when each of these incidences has occurred. I called the kia dealer today and they told me to call Monday. This is a very scary situation and I fear serious injury may occur. I was on residential streets when all three episodes occured and did not have my cruise control on as noted from other kia owners who have experienced this on the highway.

8 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 05/25/2012

Traveling at 70 mph, cruise control on, "esc off" light and check engine light illuminated on the dashboard and the vehicle decelerated rapidly. Lost ability to accelerate past 20 mph. Vehicle was stopped and restarted. Accelerator resumed working for about 50 miles and the same things happened again: esc off light and check engine light illuminated and vehicle rapidly decelerated and lost all acceleration ability this time. Stopped vehicle again and restarted and accelerator resumed working. This happened at around 2am. In the morning the check engine light remained on and the vehicle was taken to a kia dealer. On the way to the dealer the "esc" light began blinking (note: this is not the same as the esc off light), the acceleration sputtered, but remained working. The dealer stated that they retrieved the throttle position sensor codes, but they cleared the computer history and could no longer duplicate the problem and therefore it could not be fixed. They retrieved the codes, cleared the memory and want to send me on my way. This is the second time a kia dealer has cleared the computer memory and the vehicle was not fixed. I was told, by my local dealer to make sure the dealer does not clear the codes/history or it can not be fixed. I have called kia consumer affairs and am awaiting a response.

9 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 05/04/2012

While traveling on the open highway at a high rate of speed, the vehicle rapidly decelerated and lost ability to maintain acceleration, as if in idle but without rpms. The cruise control was on at the time. The check engine light and the esc off light illuminated on the dashboard. Once the vehicle was stopped and restarted it was drivable to the nearest kia dealer. The check engine light stayed on. The dealer (who was closing for the weekend and 200 miles away from home) ran a diagnostic scan which indicated that the throttle position sensor needed replacement and an ecm software upgrade was needed. He then cleared the computer and sent us on our way, telling us we should be able to make it home, but stated it was imperitive it get fixed. He stated that when it happened again to stop and restart the vehicle. Once home, the dealer said he could do nothing to repair the vehicle because the computer was no longer registering a problem and the check engine light was not on. I called back to the dealer that originally diagnosed the vehicle and he concurred that without a current code/check engine light on, the vehicle could not be fixed (he was the manager!). So now I am told to wait for it to happen again and come in immediately. This is the second time the check engine light has come on and the dealer was unable to diagnose the problem because it was off when taken in. The rapid deceleration was a very dangerous situation as there were many semi-trucks on the open highway and they can not stop/slow down quickly. One blasted his horn and was barely able to move over in time as we tried to coast to a safe area on the side of the road! scary, with 2 children in the vehicle and completely helpless to do anything to quckly get to safety.

10 Cruise Control problem of the 2012 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 12/10/2011

Let me begin by prefacing that this is our 2nd Sedona, and we purchased both brand new. We have had this vehicle for 4 months, and it only has appx. 6000 miles on the odometer. I was driving down a residential side street I approached the a stop sign, I began depressing the brakes to slow down, and there was a car at the stop sign in front of me, waiting to turn left. As I continued to slow down with my foot still on the brake, the van's engine, out of nowhere, began to rev continuously at full throttle. My foot was still on the brake, and despite that the van began to move forward despite. I pushed my foot down as hard as I possibly could onto the brake, but the brake pedal was resisting, due to the continuous high rev of the engine. Out of desperation because I was just about to rear-end the car in front of me, I reached for the gear shift to throw the van into park, when the rev suddenly stopped, and the van lurched to a complete stop. I then threw it into park and sat in the road, shaking uncontrollably with my heart pounding. I just barely missed the car in front of me. Once I was composed, I very slowly drove home (~ 2 blocks). I verified that there was nothing on the floor which could have rolled under the accelerator pedal. The floor mat was in place, and was not turned up near the pedals. My seat was in its regular position. I was not using the cruise control (I. E. The cruise control system was 'off' at the time). My foot did not hit the gas pedal at all, it was firmly planted on the brake. My pants or shoes were also not caught on the pedal. This has never happened before. I have never experienced anything like it in my 21 years of driving & cannot imagine what would cause an event like this to happen in a brand new vehicle but we are terrified to drive it- especially with our children in it! I immediately called the dealership, and we dropped it off tonite.

13 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 06/14/2010

While driving on interstate w/ cruise control on, driver tapped "accel" to increase speed by a mile or two per hour. A sudden acceleration occurred causing passengers to be "pushed" backward in seats. Braking hard ended the incident. Cruise control was turned off and not used again.

14 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 10/13/2009

The contact owns a 2008 kia Sedona. The vehicle would sporadically accelerate without driver intent. When the failure would occur, the vehicle would feel similar to activating the cruise control mechanism but would not respond to the contact engaging the brakes. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on three separate occasions; however, the dealer could not duplicate the failure. No repairs were made to the vehicle. The failure mileage was 14,534 and the current mileage was 15,000. Updated 04/22/10 updated 05/06/10.

15 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 07/18/2009

Let me start by saying we loved the van up until this incident. I was driving on the interstate with my family in our 2008 kia Sedona. I had the cruise control set to 75 mph, I went to pass someone and when I pushed the accelerator to pass the car. I tried to disengage the cruise control by pressing the brake as well as doing it manually by pressing the cruise control button. I could not get the van to slow down even though I was pushing the brake to the floor. At one point I was doing between 90 and 100 mph. I finally managed to get the van stopped and my brakes were smoking extremely bad. I took it to the dealer and they said it was a bad brake switch. The dealer acted like it was no big deal. I explained that we could have been injured or even killed.

16 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 06/06/2009

The vehicle struts with less then 75k miles (warranty covers only to 60k miles) have poor suspension. The cruise control will not set at desired speed. Brake lights remain on even after the vehicle ignition is turned off; pumping the brakes will not release lights and could cause the battery to drain unless fuse is removed.

17 Cruise Control problem of the 2007 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 09/01/2008

2007 kia Sedona cruise control is not working when driving on hills. The consumer stated the cruise control worked fine on short hills, but when she drove on long hills, with the cruise set, it went out of control. The dealer told the consumer that cruise control only worked on flat hills or going uphill.

18 Cruise Control problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 01/06/2008

Bad misfire in motor causing the cruise control to turn off and trans to slam out and then back into over drive, came close to getting hit in the rear on I-95. I have had this van back to kia miney times and its still not fix. All so the last time I had the van for service I complained abut a bearing noise they did not fix it the noise is getting worse.

19 Cruise Control problem of the 2006 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 09/05/2007

My kia Sedona is in the zieser service center again. I had to take it in for the horn and other concerns. The horn does not always work and this is a safety issue. The dealer said they can not duplicate, but when my husband and I drive the vehicle it does not work on a consistent basis. They have had to replace parts on this horn already on several occasions. And I have had to bring it back on several occasions since they can not duplicate at first. On my last visit the service dept turned the rotors for the brakes. I told them that it is now squealing since they did this and I wanted to know why. When they called to tell me my car was ready, they said I owed $25 to look at the brakes. I ask why and dave in service said that their tech took over 2 hours to look for problems and no one was going to pay them (meaning kia), so I needed to pay. I told them I wanted to know why I did not have a squeak before and then after they did some warranty work on the van I did have a squeak. I also stated that I have a safety concern about the car feeling like it is being pushed when you are slowing down and you get to 30-35 mph. He said this is normal. Lastly, the cruise control does not decelerate when going down hills (even a slight grade). It does not do this on a consistent basis. They told me this is normal, but when I drive it accelerates and if I have it set at say 40 mph I have to apply to brakes because I have had it accelerate past 60 mph. Again, I am very concerned about my vehicle and the fact that there are safety issues that I feel need to be corrected. Even though they state that the horn is working correctly, when I was driving this weekend, I was cut off by a car and when I went to honk the horn it did not work. And when I tested on several occasions, it did not work. My husband also was cut off (there is in intersection that is notorious for this by our home) and he could not get it to work.

20 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 12/24/2006

2003 kia Sedona accelerates without warning when the speed (cruise) control is enabled, but not activated (set button has not been pushed). This is not the known cable freezing problem, since we live in florida. This is a safety problem if in traffic and can't react fast enough to hit the brakes before impacting a car in front. Dealer could not duplicate problem after a short drive and nothing was done.

21 Cruise Control problem of the 2004 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 08/18/2004

While driving 50 mph vehicle stalled. Vehicle was still driveable. Dealership informed the consumer that there transmission failed. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. Dealer stated problem was caused by electricl harness. Also having multiple failures with output speed sensor; transmission 3 times; thermostat assembly; power steering leaked; input speed sensor; low ground voltage failed; fuse block problems; cruise control. Consumer was advised that due to the design of the cruise control, the vehicle accelerates often while on an incline at 45 to 55 mph as if vehicle's engine/transmission was racing.

22 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 Kia Motor Sedona

Failure Date: 01/02/2004

The cruise control will not work at certain times and this has been going on for at least 6 or 7 months and is still happening. Dealer replaced cruise switch but that did not work, it still is doing the same thing. Went back to dealer and they said they could not doing anything about it until they see it happening. This is a problem because it does it when it feels like doing it and I cannot get it to the dealer when it is happening.
