Exterior Lighting Problems of Kia Motor Sedona - part 1

Rain water continually collects in both brakelight/taillight assemblies at the rear of the van. This causes the bulbs for the turn signal and brake light to burn out. This has been an issue since we purchased the vehicle in 2016. Initially, we could change the bulb(s) and they would last a while but now the passenger side bulb(s) can be replaced and burn out immediately! we have burned through dozens of bulbs since owning the van. On 6/17/25 I took the van to valvoline in circleville, ohio for an oil change and replacement of the rear passenger turn signal bulb. On inspection he informed me that both brake lights were out as well as the right turn signal. He was able to replace the left brake light after dumping water out of the casing but the right side was so full of water he wouldn't even touch the bulbs because he said it would do no good. He recommended I get new casings/housing assemblies for both sides. In reading about this issue, it appears to be a problem not only for me but for many others. It was noted that several owners had holes drilled in the housing as "drain" holes and that the issue was corrected and/or improved in the later models. I believe this to be a huge safety issue due to the fact that it involves braking and turning and the increased risk of getting hit from behind.

The taillights leak, fill with water, and the bulbs short out. When this happens, the rear lights (taillights, brake lights reverse lights, turn signals) stop functioning. This occurs on a taillight for a vehicle that has never had an accident. I went to the dealer and asked them to fix this, suggesting it should be covered for free because it is a safety hazard. I mentioned that I have noticed other kia Sedona's with the same problem of several inches of water in the taillight assembly. The service manager said, "yeah, that happens all the time. But it isn't covered. " the price to repair was several hundred dollars. I've since had to repair it three times. Here is a link to a youtube video showing how to remove the water. Low head lights do not work. High beams and fog lights work. This seams to be a kia problem across makes and models. Why has a recall not been issued?.

Headlight don't turn on even with new bulbs. Break light fill with water and stop working.

The rear brake / turn signal light housing tends to fill with water. When this occurs the turn signal lights short out. This presents a risk when making turns or switching lanes if the driver is unaware the rear signal is out. There are numerous online articles and videos illustrating the issue. Kia is also aware of the issue, but do not cover it under their warranty or offer repair.

I have needed to replace the drivers side brake light almost every 3 months. I have seen many kia Sedonas with that brake light out.

When driving at night all of the lights on the vehicle go out, but the engine continues to run normally. After 10 -15 seconds the lights come back on and the display has the low tire indicator illuminated. This has happened multiple times. I have had it checked by my mechanic and everything seems normal. Any ideas?.

The contact owns a 2016 kia Sedona. The contact stated that while a state inspection was being performed on the vehicle, it was discovered that water and condensation was present inside the driver's and passenger’s side rear brake light housing. The contact stated that the vehicle failed the safety inspection due to the failure. The water and condensation were removed from the housing and the light bulbs were replaced but the failure reoccurred during the next rainstorm. The local dealer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 97,000.

The contact owns a 2010 kia Sedona. The contact stated while driving approximately 75 mph with the cruise control engaged he observed that the cruise control independently ceased functioning. The contact stated that the "esc" light had illuminated. The contact stated that he was able to continue on the highway but had to depress the accelerator with his foot due to the cruise control failure. The contact had noted that the cruise control switch would illuminate, but the cruise function would not engage. The contact stated that when he had pulled into a rest stop he noted that the rear brake lights were still illuminated even though he had turned the vehicle off and had placed it in park (p). The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the brake stop and brake stop lamp switch needed to be replaced. The contact stated that he related the failure to a previously repaired recall for NHTSA campaign number: 13v114000 (exterior lighting). The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

I had to replace the left brake light 4 times already. I see other kia Sedonas that have the same brake light out all the time.

The component that is failing in the kia is the headlighs. It has been inspected by kia of orange park and is determined to need replacement of left and right headlight assemblies. It is available for further inspection but kia wants more money than I can afford to fix it, so I will be finding another mechanic soon. While traveling home with five others after dark the headlights just went out on a very dark highway. Before we could safely pull over they came back on. We proceeded to continue home and the lights randomly went completely out and back on again for the entire journey. I have not driven the kia at night since. With the grace of god there was no accident so the police and insurance agency were not involved; only the kia dealer thus far has inspected the kia. There is an attached report. There were no warning lights, lamps or messages, or symptoms prior to this headlight failure. This happened on mother's day 2023. I have no assessment of the cause, with the exception of a full diagnostic of the vehicle which I have paid kia of orange park for, in full. A report is attached or available from the dealership. I am adamant that this issue is a serious, life threatening issue that left six people in terrorized silence for a shaky forty five minute ride home. I am grateful that none of the passengers or anybody in any other vehicle were hurt or injured and I will not stop until a full national recall is made on this problem.

Headlights will shut off while driving. This sometimes will occur on its own, other times, it appears to be caused when using the turn signal lever. The lights will come back on by touching/moving the lever. This is dangerous and could lead to an accident.

The headlights are auto leveling based on load. Although there is no load in my vehicle the headlights do not shine out very far in front of the vehicle. There is a very distinct cut off line on the road. There is no way of adjusting them. This is very dangerous because you cannot see whats ahead of the vehicle in the dark. Headlights will randomly turn off and flicker on and off. Has happened multiple times and on dark roads.

The brake lights went out. The bulbs were replaced. The fuse was replace and there still no lights. The top led brake light works, but lower lights on each side are out. I don't know if the brake switch is the problem when the upper led works. I have researched the issue and discovered that this is a xommon kia issue with many models. When a google search is conducted for "kia no brake lights it comes up with other people that have the same issue with multiple models. ".

I will be driving and my headlight shut off. All of my warning lights come on, I lose all power and everything electrical shuts off. I am unable to use my blinkers, my head lights don't work, my radio doesn't work, and the car once put in park, won't shift. I have taken to 3 mechanics, spent over $800 and no one can figure it out. Kia won't help and claim I need to pay and take it to the dealership. They want $100 just to look at it. I fear for me and my children. This is a serious safety issue. I have seen several complaints online of the same thing. This is an issue with this vehicle and I'm scared I will die driving down the highway when my headlights just shut off.

The tail lights continue to stay on even when the car is parked and no one is pressing the brakes. The driver needs to press multiple times the brake pedal to turn them off. I constantly have to buy light bulbs for the rear-end brake lights because of this issue. The kia dealership service center check the issue and couldn't find anything other than the light bulb was out. This safety issue confuses drivers behind because it doesn't know if the person driving is braking or what.

We received notice for safety recall that the tail lights and turn signal lights could fail and they needed to change something to do with computer. We took it in and left with lights working and 3days later they stopped working again. Kia is refusing to fix it on the recall but it is the same issue.

Driving home at night my main headlights randomly turned off while moving and went completely dark. The headlight setting was set to always on at the time of the incident. I quickly tried flipping to the auto setting and the head lights came back on. I drive 50 yards and they went back off. Fortunately I was not to far from home and kept switching back and forth to keep the lights on. I see similar complaints on the internet. Scary!.

There have been several times recently when both of the headlights flicker on and off while driving or while parked over the past 2 weeks. Most of the time it seems to happen when using the turn signal, but not always. Most times it has only flickered off for a second and it has happened for as long as several seconds until the driver could quickly turn the lights off and back on again for them to work. This is obviously a safety hazard when driving at night. When the lights flicker, the park lights will stay on.

There are two issues I believe both are connected. Number 1. Sometimes when I put on the left blinker either nothing happens at all or the wrong blinker (right side) will go on instead of the left. Number 2. Sometimes when I put on my left blinker the headlights will turn off. It can be really scary when this happens on a dark highway at night.

I was unaware of these recalls but have had issues with the air bag sensor in the passenger seat, the automatic doors and with the turn signals switching the way they respond.

The taillight housings accumulate standing water due to cracking of the plastic on the back of the tail light housing. This water leads to corrosion of the brake light bulb socket, which then leads to an inoperative brake light.

When signaling left sometimes the right blinker comes on if at all. To make it signal left you have to push the lever hard down to go left. There are times when the signal will go fast then normal. This all happens when coming to a turn or stationary. In all weather. This has been happening since October 2020.

Headlamp wiring harness defective. Low beam inoperative. Happened ad I was driving on vacation. I've read several blogs about same issue with other owners. No recall has been issued. My vehicle is 4 years old.

I have replaced the headlamp bulbs every 3 months or less, purchasing the brightest bulb, using the recommended gel,. Also have purchased the less expensive ones. . Nothing seems to break this cycle. It is getting quite expensive . . Over $50 for 2 bulbs. Is this normal? the driver's side blows out quicker than the passenger side. Would like some help in this. Thanks.

The headlamps quit working in unison, replaced bulbs lasted about a week then went out again. I have replaced them several times with same issue.

While driving down an unlit road by harold parker state forest, in massachusetts. My low beam head lights suddenly went out ( stopped working ) and never came back on. I used my high beams to make my way home, much to the dismay of on coming traffic. I went to the local auto parts store think that the bulbs burnt out, but that is not the case. I tested the fuse and relay and everything seems find, so now I am making an appointment with the local kia dealer to investigate. My wife informed me that is had happened to her earlier the same week, but she thought it was just her eyes. This was a major problem given the time of night, the inability to see without blinding on coming traffic. I did some looking into this matter and found a lot of the same complaints on the web. Please look into this matter before someone get injured or worse, killed.

While driving down the road the low beams stopped working on my 2017 kia Sedona, replaced both light bulbs and they still do not work, the high beams work not the low beams.

Turn lights and stick signals most the time do not work appropriately I turn on to the left and the right side come on some times nothing happens some times I try to use to DE left and the fourth way hazard come on. I really scare to have a crash because I send the wrong signal or get a ticket.

My head lights blinked three times then went out on low setting, high beams work only. Bulbs have been replaced four times and after about a month they blink and then go out- this has happened each time while driving at night time on way home from work with my children in the car and this is unacceptable. Especially when seeing how many forums are online about this issue with kias. All times I have been on back country roads going home from work at 11 pm.

Rear directionals fill with rain water and stop functioning.

Today looking my car value, found that my wagon have 4 recalls. I'm worry for this situation.

Break switch sticking causing the break lights to stay on , esc doesn't work causing the accelerator to stop working and the cruise control stops working. I was pulling out from a stop and my vehicle would not go above an idle. I had to stop in the middle of the road, put the vehicle into neutral before I could continue on my way.
